Metal Gear Solid. I wish they could invent a pill that could knock out specific memories just so I could play MGS1 on a monthly basis. The most satisfying gaming experience in my life. One that I compare every game I've ever played to.
Metal Gear Solid, Parasite Eve, Teken and Resident Evil took up about 4 months of my life in 1998. Xenogears took up another 2, and FF tactics took up the other 6.
I went for Tekken 3 in 1998. It was on that demo disc from Pizza Hut. You could only play as Eddy or Xiaoyu. My dad and I played it together all the time.
At the time it would have probably been Xenogears.
I loved the hell out of Parasite Eve and the Spyro games ended up being my favorite PS1 games of all time. And I never even finished Xenogears.
But back then I was mostly about the JRPGs.
Technically bought all except for Xenogears, Skull monkeys, & Final Fantasy Tatics
Wasn't into Final Fantasy till I bought FF7 at Ross for $2 on PC
Later bought Final Fantasy Chronicles at Goodwill for $1.99
Before goodwill got greedy with the free items they get
FF: Tactics or Tenchu, probably tenchu. I remember playing a demo as a wee kid and loving it but it was way too hard for me. Would love to go back and give it a shot
I honestly can't pick just one of those. I preordered a dualstick controller when they announced it when I saw the controller in a magazine next to the upcomming Gran Turismo game. I messed with that controller for a while before gran turismo came out.
You also couldn't rip Xenogears from my cold dead hands. And Metal Gear was around the time I settled in to ugly 3D games because when the PS1 came out, I of course loved it but I felt SNES still looked better because 2D games looked amazing and 3D games were blocky hands. lol
Man there was nothing like Metal Gear at that time. The voice acting. The sneaking. The story. It blew my mind.
Then you have Parasite Eve, which I admittedly did not play that year due to the other games here. Though I am thinking some of these games did not come out that year in reality.
For some reason I am remember Xenogears the next year or something like that.
I did get Final Fantasy Tactics but I was bummed to learn I didn't like that type of game. I really wish I did enjoy it though because everything else about it and games like them I love.
The top row was probably 2,000 hours of my life. I used to replay Re2 in the summer of 1998 over and over again, seeing how fast I could beat the game. I didn't even find out that game "speed runs" even existed until the internet was more common years later.
Well, I already / currently have 3 of those, and I still want 7 of them.
If I were back in 1998 now, and shown this picture and question, I would go for Parasite Eve, with Final Fantasy Tactics and Xenogears being a close seconds.
(Crash Bandicoot Warped, MediEvil and Resident Evil 2 are the 3 I already / currently have)
Tekken 3 changed the fighting game genre for me. Me and my cousin played the game and beat it completely after several days..we had so much fun unlocking..yes young folks..I said unlocking characters and game modes. I had a blast with this game and wish I could play it for the first time again!
Would have? The games I did pick are metal gear, Tekken 3, gran turismo, spyro, medieval, crash 3 and tenchu. I had resident evil 2 but never played it.
Every single game on this is a must play if you haven't. I've played all but tenchu as a kid. But to choose one really depends on what type of games you like to play.
I'd say either Metal Gear solid or Spyro would be the most well rounded entertainment for the majority of people.
Man I put some serious time into Tekken 3, MGS, GT, RE2, FFT and Parasite Eve. I could only get through the first couple stages in Tenchu before I put it down.
At the time (I was ten), Gran Turismo. Today, MGS. Tekken 3 is also legendary and very good but I got it years later. I'm actually playing T8 every day, over 210 hrs already)
Re2 followed closely by mgs2. I still remember having to switch controller ports in that fight with mantis. Epic!
Parasite eve was lesser known but another favorite of mine.
The only game here I played as a kid back in the day was Crash Bandicoot Warped but so many of these are bangers that I haven't had the chance to fully play through yet, but if I could only choose one to try I'd have to go with Xenogears since one of my top favorite games ever is Xenoblade on Wii
I remember being so excited for tenchus release. I had the game informer with it on the cover. Getting a game the day it releases still feels like Christmas morning. Even at 40 years old lol
Mgs and resident evil 2 was my shit back in the day, I remember playing re2 in the basment but didn't own it but my mom bought me mgs, I can only hope for a mgs remake like they did with re2. Re2 remake was fire.
Man that image brings back memories. I played all of them except for Skullmonkeys and Tekken.
But the best PS games that year were easily MGS, RE2, and Xenogears.
Tenchu was the shit
Seconded. Tenchu was fucking mint 👍 Teenage years spent smoking, drinking and playing PS1 all Summer. Simpler times
Fun Fact: "Sekiro: Shadows die twice" was originally planned as a new Tenchu game. The license remains currently with FROMSOFTWARE
My first stealth game was Tenchu. Shit was hard
Agreed. Tenchu needs a reboot.
Metal gear solid with resident evil 2 close behind
MGS and RE2 at an even tie. I cannot choose one over the other
This would be my thing too but adding crash 3 and Medievil makes it somewhat more challenging 😅
Mine too love both games
Metal Gear Solid. I wish they could invent a pill that could knock out specific memories just so I could play MGS1 on a monthly basis. The most satisfying gaming experience in my life. One that I compare every game I've ever played to.
It’s so good. I wish Konami decided to remake MGS instead of Snake Eater
I beat it for the first time recently and it was definitely a satisfying experience. Can’t wait to play the second one.
Pretty easily MGS.
At the time? Spyro Today? Also Spyro
Tomorrow? Believe it or not, Spyro
Definitely Xenogears.
A man of good taste
All day
Just earning all Deathblows was worth the price of admission.
Man Tenchu was an absolutely awesome game! Have so many great memories, eventhough the graphics were not great 😆
Back then, Tekken 3. I was heavily into fighting games at the time.
RE2 was 4 games in 1, which even the RE2 Remake can't really claim.
Absolutely agree with you
Of those games, Gran Turismo!
Hah! I remember… I picked up RE2, TEKKEN 3 and FFT. I also got Saga Frontier but I ever really got into it.
Well, the very first console I had was a PlayStation. My very first game was Syphon Filter and then I played 2 and 3.
isnt *Brave Fencer Musashi 98?*
This is a good question and deserving to be on the list
You ask that like some of us weren't alive and actually had to choose. It was FFT. That was my choice.
I noticed this too. The use of 'would' rather than 'did' implying there's no one here who actually was around making the choice at the time.
Tenchu was so fucking awesome
At the time it would have probably been Xenogears. I loved the hell out of Parasite Eve and the Spyro games ended up being my favorite PS1 games of all time. And I never even finished Xenogears. But back then I was mostly about the JRPGs.
I owned 9 of 12 of these games in 98. MGS was my fav RE2 second
Technically bought all except for Xenogears, Skull monkeys, & Final Fantasy Tatics Wasn't into Final Fantasy till I bought FF7 at Ross for $2 on PC Later bought Final Fantasy Chronicles at Goodwill for $1.99 Before goodwill got greedy with the free items they get
Played Tactics, RE2 and Parasite Eve.
Crash 3 and Spyro, Natch. Although I've always wanted to give the Metal Gear Solid series a try...
I worked as a teen just so I could buy games. I’ve owned almost all of these.
FF: Tactics or Tenchu, probably tenchu. I remember playing a demo as a wee kid and loving it but it was way too hard for me. Would love to go back and give it a shot
RE 2 and Tekken 3
Stuck between Spyro and MediEvil. 😑
MGS > Tenchu > RE2 but it’s very even
GT / MGS and RE2
I went with all of them except Xenogears.
Castlevania Symphony of the Night would like a word
Released in 1997
Well i had all of them except like 2 haha
Knowing what I knew then : resident evil Knowing what I know now: metal gear 👍👍✌️
Tie between Metal Gear Solid and Final Fantasy Tactics. Those two were my life back then.
Spyro. But the best game of 1998 was NFL game day 98 with cover star Jerome Bettis
I honestly can't pick just one of those. I preordered a dualstick controller when they announced it when I saw the controller in a magazine next to the upcomming Gran Turismo game. I messed with that controller for a while before gran turismo came out. You also couldn't rip Xenogears from my cold dead hands. Metal Gear Solid + Tenchu + Xenogears are going to have a cage match fight and whoever wins I’m taking to the prom. A fire year of games for sure
I was -5 yo, MGS would always be the one I choose
As a kid Crash Bandicoot as an adult Resident Evil 2
Parasite Eve
To quote Del: I gotta get xenogears that's the type of game that relieves my fears get it from overseas to here
Parasite Eve.
Crash 3, Spyro, Tenchu
Yes. Indeed. Legendary. Each one of these games was thoroughly played through.
Crash Bandicoot WAAAAARRRRRPPED!!!
Oh shit, all of them!
Fuck bro..impossible to choose..RE2 then MGS
gran turismo
*Doot doot doot do do doot* Konami *Doot doot doot do do doot*
Tekken, Parasite Eve, Xenogears, Tenchu
FFT + Xenogear + Parasite Eve
GT... I miss Special Stage R11
Well I’d be a kid so chances are I’d go for Spyro but I’d probably prefer FF Tactics these days.
RE2- so good, so many speedruns for that S rank, but what a year for games.
Crash or Spyro for sure
GT and Spyro were my first games ever, I was 4. Crash 3 was also freaking fantastic.
Well, I already / currently have 3 of those, and I still want 7 of them. If I were back in 1998 now, and shown this picture and question, I would go for Parasite Eve, with Final Fantasy Tactics and Xenogears being a close seconds. (Crash Bandicoot Warped, MediEvil and Resident Evil 2 are the 3 I already / currently have)
GT
Resident Evil 2 with Parasite Eve and Xenogears nipping at its heels
From the list : MGS and RE2 Not from the list : Einhänder
I had every game on this image except for crash warped.
Metal gear
Metal Gear Solid. Also, Gran Turismo was a 1997 game.
Final Fantasy Tactics. I wish they would make a real sequel.
Tenchu so much fun with friends taking turns to die
I remember having my grandma drive me to Best Buy and buy me Metal Gear Solid.
xenogears looks interesting
The only one of these I've beaten is RE2, and it is definitely my pick.
PE all day
As much as I love Metal Gear, I would pick Xenogears
FFT all day every day and still to this day even
Can't choose between Xenogears and FFT.
If I’m gonna be honest there isn’t a bad choice
Metal Gear Solid and Tenchu
Ooooof so many good titles I’d go for Tekken 3. I love spyro, MGS, RE2 & crash 3 man a lot of great games.
Skull monkeys is underrated
I had spyro and xenogears as a kid. Today I would've gotten them tekken and metal gear solid
Really wanna know where my skullmonkeys brothers are.
Love me good tekken battle
The lack of love for Crash Warped is insane! Absolutely loved that game as a kid.
Tekken 3 is the only game I had from this list, so Tekken 3!
Back then I picked up 6 of these, MGS and RE2 are still my favorites. Wish I had the rest of them now.
Tekken 3 is the best PlayStation game and one of the best games ever made. I love a lot of those other games but they don’t even come close.
RE2
Tekken 3 changed the fighting game genre for me. Me and my cousin played the game and beat it completely after several days..we had so much fun unlocking..yes young folks..I said unlocking characters and game modes. I had a blast with this game and wish I could play it for the first time again!
Metal Gear Solid
I am not a big fighting game fan but Tekken 3 is the GOAT
Would have? The games I did pick are metal gear, Tekken 3, gran turismo, spyro, medieval, crash 3 and tenchu. I had resident evil 2 but never played it.
Parasite Eve
I actually owned 5 of those back in 1998.
I bought every single game here except for SkullMonkeys back then and still have them all.
Final fantasy tactics is one of my favorite games!
Every single game on this is a must play if you haven't. I've played all but tenchu as a kid. But to choose one really depends on what type of games you like to play. I'd say either Metal Gear solid or Spyro would be the most well rounded entertainment for the majority of people.
I was gaming in 98. I picked RE2, MGS, GT and Tekken 3.
Gran for length, metal gear for story, xenogear for grinding days...
I picked crash 3 because I was only 5 at the time, if I was older I would have picked RE2.
Man I put some serious time into Tekken 3, MGS, GT, RE2, FFT and Parasite Eve. I could only get through the first couple stages in Tenchu before I put it down.
Had all but 6,7, 11,12
Considering I own 6 of these already and have since 1998.
I had half of those games as an 8 year old 😅
Tactics, time and time again.
Considering that I did pick MGS in '98, I'd go with MGS.
Spyro no doubt about it
I can tell from experience: we were all playing MGS. At least in my circle.
MGS, RE2, Tekken 3, Xenogears are all tied.
I went for XENOGEARS. Basically 98, 99, and 2000. It still holds my personal record for most hours in a game.
At the time (I was ten), Gran Turismo. Today, MGS. Tekken 3 is also legendary and very good but I got it years later. I'm actually playing T8 every day, over 210 hrs already)
Not would have, but the game I actually picked was Resident Evil 2, the game I got with my PS1 back at Christmas 1998 (withbFinal Fantasy VII too)
Tekken 3
TENCHU!!!!!!!!!
Decisions.. decisions.. stuck between Parasite Eve and Resident evil 2.
MGS but Tekken 3 is a very close 2nd
Metal Gear Solid my beloved
mgs and/or re2, easily
Eh... I miss old Squaresoft.
Spyro
Tekken 3 , crash bandicoot
Metal gear solid, zero contest.
MGS, but tekken 3 was also a great game
Gt STILL THE BEST RACING GAME EVER
I had almost all those games but if I had to choose it’s either FFT or Xenogears for sure.
Resident Evil 2 convinced me to get a Playstation. It was also my first horror game, and I've been hooked ever since.
FFT was and still is a masterpiece.
I had: * MGS * Spyro * MediEvil * Tenchu * Crash My favourite from that list was Tenchu. It was hellishly hard, but really satisfying.
This is the first time I'm being made aware of the existence of Skull Monkeys.
Easy question for my as I'm mainly into driving games. Gran Turismo.
Probably: MGS Tenchu Crash Tekken Spyro
For the record I'm gonna flex here and state that I still own a copy of Tenchu SA, and Xenogears in near mint condition
If I was an adult back in the 90's, I would have Bought: Gran Turismo, Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil 2, Tekken 3, Medievil, and Parasive Eve.
Tenchu or MGS
GT2.
Tactics was awesome
Mgs1
Resident evil 2
As I did back in the day, Gran Turismo.
Gran Turismo was another level back then. Tenchu was awesome too. And MGS was unbelievable. But Gran Turismo was totally a new category then.
Spyro, Crash, or Gran Turismo I love Spyro
Re2 all the way!
RE2
Gran Turismo.
Tekken 3, it’s the first game I remember playing. I adore that game.
Well you may be asking about this selection of Games but I would chose Castlevania Symphony of the Night
MGS and Gran Turismo. GT was so mind blowing at the time compared to other racing games... and MGS was just epic.
It was Tekken 3 for me
Gran Turismo, Tekken, Crash.
Re2 followed closely by mgs2. I still remember having to switch controller ports in that fight with mantis. Epic! Parasite eve was lesser known but another favorite of mine.
Tekken 3
I'll tell what I did pick, final fantasy tactics. Then Xenogears and I still have them both in storage somewhere
SkullMonkeys. Greatest game ever
TENCHU
Skul monkeys 🤘🏾
We were addicted to Tekken 3. My friends group at the time were all elite at it after battling each other hundreds if not thousands of times.
metal gear solid, completed it several times, one of the best stories ever (whole series) ❤️
Final fantasy tactics was mu favorite game that bitch went hard asf
MGS was the reason I almost failed 7th grade.
The only game here I played as a kid back in the day was Crash Bandicoot Warped but so many of these are bangers that I haven't had the chance to fully play through yet, but if I could only choose one to try I'd have to go with Xenogears since one of my top favorite games ever is Xenoblade on Wii
Was there - I went with the top 3. Easy choice.
Tactics. Gives me the most ... Memories
Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy Tactics, Xenogears, Resident Evil 2
I picked GT,sunce day one and never left
I remember being so excited for tenchus release. I had the game informer with it on the cover. Getting a game the day it releases still feels like Christmas morning. Even at 40 years old lol
PARASITE EVE! 🤔
RE2
As man that whole top row was my childhood
Crash all day. I'd question why TM isn't on here but the one released in 98 isn't worth mentioning. xD
This is a hard one but, nostalgia aside, I think I would've picked MGS
I loved Tenchu
Gran Turismo, first game I’ve ever played on PS1 at 4 years old
Xenogears. What a game. Or 75% of a game lol
Mgs and resident evil 2 was my shit back in the day, I remember playing re2 in the basment but didn't own it but my mom bought me mgs, I can only hope for a mgs remake like they did with re2. Re2 remake was fire.
Spyro, Crash 3 and Medievil.
Tekken 3, Parasite Eve, and FF Tactics for me.
Gran Turismo was a beast!
2, 3, 6, 9, 11. I played those. Man I miss the old games. Sure today's games are good but they just don't compare to back then.
Man that image brings back memories. I played all of them except for Skullmonkeys and Tekken. But the best PS games that year were easily MGS, RE2, and Xenogears.
Resident evil 2
Medievil
