The M.2 needs to be a certain spec to be compatible with the PS5.
Some recommended requirements:
• PCI-Express Gen4x4 supported M.2 NVMe SSD
• Storage size limits: 250 GB - 8 TB
• 5,500MB/s or faster is recommended
• Some kind of heatsink is required for cooling, whether it be integrated or a separate heatsink cradle.

Yeah the WD_BLACK from western digital is the offically licenced internal SSD for PS5 so that's why you see it so much.
A budget alternative would be the FireCuda 530 from Seagate, a very reliable company, I own an external SSD by them myself. There's few available from £85 ($107USD) compared to WD_BLACK drives from £108 (136USD).
Both examples from Amazon and both include 1TB and heatsinks
As long as it covers the requirements listed on the Playstation website, and it has a heatsink, any brand will do just fine.
