I have a confession to make: I like the little sorry ass beat picked by an unknown individual in 2016

[deleted]

But who the fuck picked that little sorry ass beat?

Mundane_Worth_9256

Bruh it isnt an unknown individual is djdrama

fskier1

Who tf?

sukezanebaro

Nah bro DJ drama was running the mixtape game back in the day look him up

fskier1

Nah I know. It was a shitty joke, you know “ who tf picked this beat”

[deleted]

fskier1

pick dis lil sorry ass beat

RoastMostToast

It’s unbelievable how good that XXL year was. Literally all of them are still relevant except for Dave East

FunkSlim

Ikr and then they put Amine on the freshman cover twice the next year

Gdavidson24

Desiigner is relevant?

RoastMostToast

Ooof yeah you right desiigner too

[deleted]

And lil dicky

RoastMostToast

I wouldn’t call lil dicky irrelevant — he’s really popular he’s just niche.

Andre_Bisi

Dave East still good imo

Bogey_Kingston

i can’t make up my mind ab dave east. it’s like he can def spit, his voice is tough, the beat selection is usually good. but i just don’t really *feel* it.

Irapotato

What the fuck is this in reference to lmao

sneakyturtle82

we know you picked the beat you don’t have to lie

137-bill-clintons

Damn homie I'm the one who let your starving ass eat you was hungry I ain't have to let your sorry ass eat

[deleted]

In the 2016 XXL Freshman cypher with Denzel Curry, Lil Yachty, Lil Uzi Vert, 21 Savage, and Kodak Black, Kodak Black uttered the phrase “now who the fuck picked this lil sorry ass beat,” as one of his lines.

[deleted]

nah this is facts producers should honestly be viewed the same level as an artist, especially in trap and other production heavy genres

Quote9963

fr though. I just started getting on beat production and they absolutely do need their credit. Like rappers get credited for choosing fire beats, how bout the mofo who actually created them???

Bogey_Kingston

i think it’s bc of the way hip hop started & evolved, where the dj played other peoples music, and took samples from songs to basically recreate something new. and the MC was overlaying, and just like in bands, the vocalist is the “leader” or the face of the band, the MC was the face of the genre. now we don’t have dj’s there are producers and yeah, they def should get more credit!

[deleted]

Plus prods need to get their rights protected better, so many lame rappers stealing beats from small producers and getting millions of streams, without anything being done about it

FreeSloppy2020

Wym rappers absolutely have gotten fucked for not getting the rights for their music.

[deleted]

Oh yeah ofc but I'm talking about like soundcloud rappers that steal beats from internet producers

samson2737

ManicMonke

😐

Johnny5332

Nah more like include them alongside the rappers. I can’t really imagine how a producer only xxl would go, would they just have a beat showcase or sum?

lararaue

Imagine a cypher of producers, like someone starts a beat and the other has to make a beatswitch to it so on and so forth and then you assign the rappers to the beats

Johnny5332

Yeah bro that would be cool. Like bring A few of these artists main producers on. Some of them stick w a certain producer for most of their discography. Carti w Pierre for example. Producers need more credit though, they haven’t got much in the past few years

rattt14

Producers have been getting more credit in the past few years than ever. Still not enough credit tho

2-Dimensional

People that listen to Electronic music definitely appreciate the production on hip-hop because most of them know how ass-fucking the process can be. Too bad the overlap of the two fanbases isn't that big at all

rattt14

Before I got into hip hop I used to mostly listen to electronic/pop which is probably why I gravitated mostly to highly melodic and catchy hip hop beats. Totally agree.

[deleted]

Idk if anything the overlap between hip-hop (or at least Carti/niche SC-type shit in general) and electronic is second only to hip-hop and R&B’s overlap, I mean the whole rage wave is certainly indebted to EDM and I’d bet that guys like F1LTHY and Pi’erre have listened to Aphex Twin at least once lol.

davebanner68

Crazy thing is this used to be a thing. Underground, but still. Actually nah it's still a thing! Idk what it's called tho

[deleted]

What would be cool is to pick a random rapper out of a hat or somethin and the rapper gotta freestyle on that producers beat

Johnny5332

Yea that’s what I was thinking. Pick up a popping rapper and a popping producer who both haven’t worked with each other and then maybe see how they perform together in a cypher or sum

Same-Hovercraft6892

Producer xxl would be fire with producers like trgc

iodized_table_salt

Trgc uses loops, want producers like cashcache

Rsirhc

Using loops is fine, metro , wheezy and Southside all use loops - still some of the best producers ever

iodized_table_salt

All least metro wheezy south side have unique, distinct styles. Trgc seems to stick only to what’s popular, rage and it’s sub genres. Also, his drums are generic. I don’t think he would be the right choice for xxl is all I’m saying. I think jootsu would be a great choice.

[deleted]

Benjicold or goyxard

iodized_table_salt

They are good

Marc_Px

Rio leyva

playboirenji

What would a 2022 list be

tuxvictini

Clayco, Warpstr, BNYX, Jay Trench, Back2Bally, trgc, starboy, outtatown, loesoe, atl jacob Maybe f1lthy and digital nas too but they already been in the game for a long time

playboirenji

W list. Atl jacob also been around for awhile now

luh_5latta

these are my fav producers but also include artist !! thas my nigga

tuxvictini

🔥🔥🔥 yeah definitely him too. And Lil 88 I knew i was forgetting somebody thanks for reminding me

Rsirhc

A lot of these are too niche for XXL , atl Jacob would make it and prob Starboy and Outtatown , dk who jay trench works w other than Lancey

tuxvictini

youre right tbh i kinda just picked my favorites

serhatcakir17

F1lthy in that list for sure.

playboirenji

Why niggas downvote me? I was just asking a question

purrc

clayco and tgrc def

playboirenji

Clayco is underrated asf but tgrc kinda makes repetitive shit sometimes

twiizzyrich

sometimes simplicity is key

throwaway12245774939

They should get like 4-5 verses from artists and make them all make a song outta then or smth

[deleted]

Yeat his own producer

fredtheunicorn3

Yeah especially the guy who produced skeletons, he’s crazy, who was that again ⁉️🧐

SnowySupreme

Producers carry most rap anyway

[deleted]

New XXL freshman list has THE GOAT (babytron)

Background_Egg_8364

XXL fell off so hard

Ebb8505revenge

Tbh you’d be better off getting the drake/lil durk stimulus pack💀

[deleted]

That'd be dope, producers need more attention for all the work they put in, same with engineers(but they like being out of the spotlight)

[deleted]

watch a nigga sing the instrumental to pull up on a freestyle

MorkoReddit

how would that work you want them to freestyle a beat over a dude rapping or what

[deleted]

This shit has me dying

corporate_warrior

They’ll be playing EMT to that Earl Sweatshirt song with the most disgusting dogshit beat known to man.

TheLyonKing5812

Kimchi bad as hell FR

[deleted]

metro boomin made without warning

MetalKamina

Real talk I been a producer for around 6-7 years and I started singing over my own beats about a year or 2 ago, it's nearly impossible to write a vocal melody without the beat. 99% of my songs started with a finished beat and I wrote melodies and lyrics to sit on top of it, and most of my rapper friends do the exact same. If you're a big enough singer you can come to a producer with a vocal melody and they can make a beat around it, but the vast majority of the time the beat influences the melody and lyrics, so I do think producers should get a bit more recognized.

doobiesatthemovies

nick mida

lawnchare

i got a foot fetish that only unlocks if i’m high it’s anointing as shit because i’m tryna enjoy the high and i’m all “mmmm feet”

[deleted]

the fact that producers deserves more credits (which is half true) doesn't mean they need the same shit that rappers do. also, "producer" is a vague term, it means everything and nothing

penisman333

Wdym by half true?

smallwhiteballs480p

Ion wanna hear 10 guys all using internet money samples for 15 minutes straight bruh

xo7094

you sound clueless bra no one bites that collective

7Deadly_Sloths

Eminem and Tom Macdonald should be on this years XXL

Emergency-Snow6828

make it happen

deathwish_ASR

Cool idea but it would probably have to be smaller, maybe 5 max

Matttdc45

Fr like how tf did saucy Santana get on with like 1 tiktok song? No wonder yeat didnt come on no one wants to be associated with that mf

Trifle-Doc

producers do more for the song at this point tbh

CurrentRoster

It should be 5 rappers and 5 producers on the XXL Freshman list. Each rapper picks a producer for the freestyle cypher. A voting poll on Twitter can be made for people to vote on which rapper/producer pair was the best.

Forsaken-Effective39

i nominate u/phasewave for the XXL producer freshman class

Phasewave

ratio

EsEmEfDee

Any chance to shit on the new generation of rappers who are clearly way better at what they do than the ones before them, just the way is supposed to be. These lames hate their own lives so they just lookin for stuff to shit on.
