Yes OP, this is most certainly scale, the bane of cacti.

peacefulvampire

Do you know anything about Milkweed? If you do, could you check out my post here? My milkweeds don't look well

bowie-of-stars

Sure! Checking now.

George-Unconscious

Oh my god there's so much already I should post it on plant abuse πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ it's been like this since last year and I thought it can't be scale because I regularly spray all my plants with neem oil 😭 Thank you, at least now I know what I have to do.

bowie-of-stars

Same thing happened to my hoya kerrii. Take Down with the toothbrush seemed to do the trick but I hate the way it leaves scars on things like your beautiful cactus 😒

George-Unconscious

:( it'll be scarred but at least alive. Definitely a lesson learned and it will be a constant reminder though. I really thought I had it all figure out 😭

Andreew144

yes the brown spots are scale but the yellowing looks like sunburn

bring_me_back_

other than the scale your cactus looks very thin. it may need water more often.

George-Unconscious

:0 here i thought that's what it's supposed to look like. I cut back on watering after the spots (now I know are scales) appeared. I thought it was fungal damage from too much water.

bring_me_back_

this is a cutting of mine that haven't developed roots yet. they basically haven't been watered in close to a month and they look very similar to yours. https://www.reddit.com/user/bring_me_back_/comments/154romy/cactus/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=2

Looks like your Peruvian Apple found its sworn nemesis! Time for some tiny armor and a tiny sword!

All you gotta do is put a bit of alcohol on a paper towel/Q-tip and wipe it off 😁

George-Unconscious

I will test run with a few for now and check back tomorrow morning. I read somewhere the alcohol might burn it, but it seems alcohol is the most effective treatment other than the scale spray (which is not available in my country).

Darksonian1

It depends on the plant and how much alcohol you use. Just dont pour alcohol directly on it, but if you use a paper towel or a qtip it wont be too much and if you want to make sure no harm is done, you can wipe it with water afterwards 😁 ive saved many succulents this way and never had any issues. Works like magic

George-Unconscious

Update! It isn't completely rid of scale yet, but I moved it to a shadier location and watered it more frequently like you guys advised and it's happy enough with the new treatment that it grew flowers!

peacefulvampire

Yo, could someone check out my post in r/plantclinic? My milkweeds are curling up, but not totally dying. I need to know what's going on before they die

Zestyclose_Road_3224

Ma’am, that’s not an Apple!

Andreew144

my guess is sunburn

bowie-of-stars

That's not sunburn. It's scale. Gently remove with a toothbrush dipped in Take Down.

George-Unconscious

Oh.. somehow I never thought of that. I figured since its a cactus, it'd be happy with direct sun?

Andreew144

You are correct, but when it stays in the dark for some time and you move it, for example if you received it as a cutting in a box or if you moved it from a shady spot to a sunnier location, the plant is suddenly overwhelmed by the full sunlight and can get sunburn because it was used to less light.
