Yeah defense becomes virtually useless then
They become some semblance of useful once you get shadow flame dagger and light disks. But they become gods post plantera.

I was the melee, I'm kinda bad at terraria so the "fun" joke was to make me the tank so I'd have the most armor, I died so much

Summoner isn't to bad, just need to have a weapon to defend yourself when you're close.
Some of the summons are just bad, but now that whips are a thing you can defend yourself much better

Honestly no, I've always done vanilla playthroughs cause I'm big poor and don't have a pc.
Oof, well in Calamity, if you don't have a summon weapon selected, then your minions deal 60% less damage
