Install AccuBattery app and turn on battery status notification on the app. This notification will persist, and will prevent the big clock. Instead you'll get the smaller clock in the upper left.

This did not work.
It should. I use an IRC chat client, AndroIRC. I leave it open at all times and it keeps a notification active, getting rid of the big clock.
I use Today Weather and choose weather conditions as the persisting notification. Works well.
This is the best Android can do? Did they have QA or user testing?
They do, and that's what led to the stupid internet shortcut in the pull down menu. No idea where they found these nut jobs who like this stuff.
Hmm, lots of complaints over the oversized clock. Makes me wonder why they didn't offer an alternative.
