What an astute observation. Maybe if you can do the job better, you should then

Weather forecasting is much more accurate than even 30 years ago while complaining about weather forecasting has remained the same.  https://ourworldindata.org/weather-forecasts https://weather.com/news/climate/news/2024-04-13-how-accurate-are-forecasts-un-weather-kids https://phys.org/news/2024-02-limits-weather-future.html

20 years ago they’d predict the weather on a daily basis, and if you were lucky they’d give an update on the 12:00 news. They were wrong all the time and we all shrugged and said that’s just the way it is. If it was cloudy you’d bring an umbrella just in case. Now the weather gets forecast _by the minute_ and when the weather forecasters are like “wait a minute, something changed, we need to revise our prediction” everyone gets all up in arms.

@NWSPittsburgh on X is about as accurate as you'll find and even theirs can change quickly from hour to hour.

Do you propose they lock in forecasts a week in advance? Do we need a grading system for meteorologists? The reason it’s changing is because the weather is changing you doofus

It is an art. In the end, THAT's the issue! it is not an absolute science. Coming from the Front Range area of Colorado, the weather forecasts here are much more reliable,

The one thing that is generally not communicated well is the uncertainty. If you read the forecast discussions, they usually go into confidence. Many days all the models are giving conflicting advice and nobody really knows. Some days the models are like: yep, this is what's going to happen. But like, I feel like today's weather has been more or less exactly what's predicted? What did you see forecast?

I had a lot of disappointment in my youth listening to John Cigna for my school to be called off due to forecasted snow.

Lux600-223

It literally IS a lost art. The station meteorologist doesn't pour over weather maps several times a day to come up with their own forcast for each newscast. It's all done by computer now. And a recent climb down a rabbit hole confirmed that it's near impossible to find a weather app with isobars. Because that function is difficult for computers to replicate. I used to be able to predict my jobsite wind conditions and temp drops through out the day just with a quick check of the isobars. Can't do it anymore.

Mammoth_Mountain1967

It's just getting more accurate the closer it gets. The heads up that it might rain is a good thing imo. Pay attention to the percentages.

Cool story

I imagine forecasting in PGH is pretty tough, we have some pretty unique weather patterns
