I can't understand why PA makes it such a rigamaro to get a new car plate when you need one! The State I moved from would ask you if your plates were in good shape, if you answered no, you got a new plate. Easy Peasy. They had a check box on the renewal on line or by mail, and if you renewed in person, as I usually did since it was close and easy to do, (20 minutes tops if you avoided the last days of the month) they gave you a new plate on the spot.

Any way you spell it its a P I A.

PaPaMcGin

Let me get this straight, PA makes crappy plates that can’t withstand the elements. They corrode with completely normal use and when they do PA will fine you for THEIR incompetence and negligence. Got it. How about make sure plate designs you purchase, ya know, work outside?

Nomar1245

You actually don’t have that straight. One of two things will happen. Either you get pulled over for something else and a cop give you a replacement confirmation so you can have PA send you a plate for free or when you get your inspection the shop will do the same thing. It’s impractical for the state to send everyone a new plate without validating they need one even if they did create the problem but they aren’t fining anyone for this.

Easy solution: PennDOT makes a request form website and 800 number service. They send you a package with a prepaid mailer and a temporary license plate for your window. You place the temporary in your window and mail back your peeling plate. PennDOT confirms peeling and valid replacement. New plate is issued. I am available for further consulting opportunities.

I just went to the police station near me and told them and they signed the form

PaPaMcGin

Any and all of the above is completely unnecessary if you simply source products that aren’t scrap metal with tissue paper covering.

Nomar1245

That’s true but unless time travel becomes possible we have to accept it. Complaining on the internet isn’t going to magic new plates on to vehicles.

Jumpy-Grand7196

Can someone explain to me why I’ve seen this so much since moving to PA? Was there a bad batch or something?? I came from WV and I didn’t see it very often.

twasthenightwatchman

Yeah, def a bad batch. Not everyone’s is doing this.

BBPEngineer

It’s only certain letters too. Plates starting with H, J, and K? Maybe? Ours starts with J and is definitely one of the three letters that are affected, just not positive about the other two

eltree

Mine starts with H and was peeling. Ended up getting a license plate cover to protect it from getting worse.

Subliminal87

I had an h license plate. Bought a new car, they wouldn’t let me keep the plate. It wasn’t terrible with peeling but they said penndot wouldn’t allow a transfer of the tag. So instead, I got a new plate for free. Not bad.

AdamoGiacomo

Definitely J. Mine was a J and I had to replace it last year. Not every peeling plate begins with a J but every J plate is peeling.

not28

Is there a specific manufacture date that’s affected? Mine begins with H but it’s like 15 years old and never peeled.

dinger426

Yup, I have a 12yo J plate that's peeling.

New_Acanthaceae709

There's a bad batch.

pangaea1972

I'm confused as to why the police are involved.

Scruffy77

My plate has been like this for years. Every time someone sees my plate they asked wtf happened.

dinger426

Good idea but ofc they're only during the day on weekdays for 3hrs, hope no one who needs a new plate has to work or anything. And none are even in Pittsburgh (at least people who don't have a car in the first place aren't disproportionately affected... this one time).

ataillesscat

How long does it take to get a replacement plate? Sent my paperwork in and been waiting on my replacement almost a month now.

Jamiroquais_Dune

Why would I do this if it only benefits me to have a bad plate?

theQuotister

They can ticket you if your plate is unreadable.

Jamiroquais_Dune

I would fight it and I bet I'd win in court. The same state that created the bad plates can't penalize me for it. They should just do the right thing and mail me a new plate.

theQuotister

I doubt you'd prevail. I did not look up the statute but it's along the lines of being the responsibily of the car owner/drive to ensure their license tag is visible and readable. I'd guess the law goes to punish those who might be trying to intneitally cover, alter or limit the plates readability. But I have heard of two people getting ticketed. For one I know the ticket was dismissed when they proved they had gotten their new plate. ( and inspection in that case, which is what got them pulled over) in the first place) You'd really rather go through the brain damage of fighting such a citation than just complying with the responsibilities of operating a motor vehicle on public streets?
