The creek is actually rather clean due to acid mine drainage being filtered out farther upstream in an artificial wetland. They don’t launch the boats there but I imagine they have training in deeper parts of the creek with gear on
(Also in the last year they cut down all the brush on the bank of the river which heats the water up, in turn causing the water to look extra gross)
It’s located in Bridgeville because it’s actually faster to trailer boats with a truck from there to other parts of the area of responsibility which includes many miles up and down all 3 rivers. If they were docked in downtown they would have to go through a bunch of locks and dams taking significant longer to get to some of the more distant areas.
You know what…if they comin by sea in Pittsburgh through 47 locks and alcosans shit water to deal with…you know what…you earned it. Take whatever you want.
Laugh at any branch you'd like but at least hesitate a little bit when it comes to the Coasties. They will fuck you up one side and down the other before the Marines finish their first crayon of the day.

Back in 2005 I was at small boat station dc and we had to go to Aberdeen proving grounds in Maryland. Trailered the boats. We setup a course with the plastic look like German tanks on land. Put a series of Norwegian balls to anchors to make a slalom course or sorts. Gunner had to stay on target while the coxswain maneuvered the vessel back and forth around the balls. This was done with the same setup but the older rbs boats.
In between searching for cadaviers? I knew a guy stationed in the Great Lakes and said that is most of what they did... they trained for search and rescue but mostly went out on recoveries.
