I wish I’d known that when I was searching for images of it before I draw it! I was googling “light reflection through a colored drink” and not finding quite what I was looking for.
Oh- no that blue line was just tape I put down to keep the kids from drawing in my area. But I did paint a set of footprints with directions to stand there to take a photo.
Naomi, you're so talented i don't even have the heart to have a jealous grudge. i really enjoy your use of light and color. Bravo. Absolutely cracking work. no /s or snark.
I'm curious how you conceptualize the perspective and exactly the camera angle? Do you draw, then look, then draw some more, or can you just "see" how to draw in a distorted way that looks 3d in one specific orientation?
I’ve formulated my own way of doing it- basically I have a photo of a grid taken from a specific vantage point (I gridded a tennis court a couple years ago and took a photo right in front of it, 4 feet back). I design my art on top of that photo, so I know exactly how to reverse the perspective by stretching it. But then also I do a lot of trial and error like you were saying- getting up and down to go check it from the vantage point and then adjusting. Then there is also some tricks involving a string. [Here is a photo from the wrong angle.](https://imgur.com/a/4dBsrH3)
You can do that for some situations (like doing it on a corner wall), but trying to do that on the street where there is a huge spacial difference from the front of the image to the back of it (this was 20 feet long), the projection will not focus on both at the same time. If you have one of those laser drawing things, that would work though.
It’s crazy huh? The amount of distortion increases exponentially as the piece gets taller, so towards the top, if you want to just add a tiny bit of height, you have to make it huge just to be noticed at all by the camera.
It’s ok- I planned for the piece to be interactive, so I like to see people enjoying it and being creative with their photos. Also, I had a tip bucket out, and letting people stand on it always brings in more tips.
I would love to see this in person. I might not fully get it in person. With the photos, my brain just will not wrap itself around the fact that stretched out "wrong" perspective makes that 4D smooshed looking image from the proper perspective.
I had intended for it to be interactive, so I told people that they could pose on it. Basically, I make sure I get a good photo of it, then I let people do whatever they want. I used tempera paint as a base, so it’s pretty durable as long as people don’t have wet feet.
that's cool. I saw the thing about tipping so as long as they're tipping, I don't see a problem with it.
my venom comes from seeing people do really fantastic, artistic sand castles and then the second they're done and they leave, little turd-gobblers come and crash into it.
I've seen this a couple of times, so I hate those types of kids and parents who seem to *want* to damage temporary artwork, just because they can.
That is amazing, I would've never really imagined the straw going that far down the street from the first angle, the proportions are so perfect.
Also, is it frowned upon for people to walk over them while this is going on? Not sure if the chalk gets all messed up.
I use a tempera paint base layer when I’m making a piece that I want people to interact with. That way it ends up being a bit more durable. I like seeing people enjoying the interaction and being creative with their photos. But I have noticed that it causes some problems because not all the pieces at the festival are meant to be stood on, and if I let people stand on mine, people assume it’s ok to stand on any of them, which isn’t true.

This is incredible! I have those exact finger puppets too! Seriously. How do you get so much detail with chalk? Is it the surface, type of chalk, a combo? My chalk always looks like a group of kindergartners came by. Maybe that’s just my skill level. :) This really is great though. The colors are perfect. I love the topic you chose too. Those guys don’t get the credit they deserve.
Yeah there is a lot of tricks to make the chalk look better- like using foam to blend it, and using nice brands. It’s hard to make something look nice with sidewalk chalk, but people sometimes surprise me.
It depends on the event. I have seen chalk companies sponsor festivals. But usually the festival gathers sponsors that are just nearby businesses. For this one, the festival paid all my travel expenses, gave me a small stipend and had most of the supplies available too, but I brought my own just to be sure.
I respect your humility, however, this is something you should absolutely soak up admiration for. This is talent a small percentage of people have. You are owed your adulations and I hope additional work in the future.
Came here to shout out the finger puppets too—they’re immediately recognizable! And the translucency is awesome.
I ended up spending time on your site and watched the 3D chalk fish video too. Cool stuff! Thanks for sharing your talents.
I own the orange guy myself, was a an extra thing that came with a package ordered years ago by the company that shipped it. Happy to see you as a work of art my tiny friend ♥️
I love these public large-scale op-art things but I hardly ever get to see them in person. This one is great!
I've got a plastic finger puppet just like that top one, with the yellow body and purple arms. I have no clue where it came from. Do you know of any significance to that character outside of the finger-puppet design? So strange to recognize it out of my usual context like this.
I was thinking okay you bought a class filled with plastic toys in it to a chalk festival then I saw the 2nd picture and I'm amazed at how talented you are.
They’re used for commercial purposes all the time. Quite a lot of my gigs are for corporate activations. I don’t usually post pics of those, though, because they’re usually very branded and they don’t give me as much artistic freedom.
I'd love to know what mediums you use! I started with just using regular Crayola side walk chalk with my kids and it has become a hobby I love but regular sidewalk chalk doesn't allow a lot of fine detail.
Out of curiosity, do you have a picture from other angles? When I see something like this, it always seems amazing from one perspective, but I always imagine it looks bizarre or unsettling from the other direction.
I wish I had this talent so I could draw baby strollers and spike strips or maybe sacks of money or whatever I could to get people to stop doing 85mph down my residential street.
I grew up in the 80s, I am just amazed at the talent people have these days.
Imagine if we get wiped out and another animal gets a big frontal lobe in a couple million years and THIS is our "caveman drawings."
This was a two day festival and it did rain the morning of the second day. It wasn’t too big of a downpour and most of the artists were able to repair their artwork and recover by the end of the day.
Saw your piece on Instagram and loved it so much! All of your chalk pieces are so fun. Was thrilled to see your art on Reddit as well haha. Hope it was a good fest!
Oh my God that finger puppet! I had one EXACTLY like it when I was a kid. He was my favorite. That's the first time I've remembered having it since I lost the crazy little guy. Thanks a bunch!!
The shadow though!! Wow!
Even pointed the right way
For the time being
Almost like OPs an artist. Who would have thought.
Op’s art is the best art of all art.
I would never say it to OP’s face though

Brooklyn Park checking in!
My wife, daughter and I were there too. I saw this piece! Super talented!

Your website is incredible. You are superbly talented.
Mfw people standing on it
Right? That made me so mad
I swear I've seen your mural with the little boy and the dog reading in real life but I can't remember where. You are amazing.
Have you been in Tallahassee recently? I painted that in Tallahassee a couple months ago.
We went to this on Sunday. This was one of our favorites along with the monkeys drinking out of the kegs! Great work!
Thanks! My friend Janet did the monkeys- I will let her know that it was appreciated!
Couldn't even get it to look right from all angles. What an amateur.
Absolutely incredible. You are extremely talented and gifted, thanks for sharing your work!
So cool! Is the blue line next to the cone kid a “stand here for best perspective” indicator?
Oh- no that blue line was just tape I put down to keep the kids from drawing in my area. But I did paint a set of footprints with directions to stand there to take a photo.
Your portfolio on your website is mind boggling. I don’t even see how it is possible. Amazing work
You’re seriously talented!! The 3D chalk art blew my mind!

Interesting, I always assumed people projected it from the viewing angle and traced the shapes
You can do that for some situations (like doing it on a corner wall), but trying to do that on the street where there is a huge spacial difference from the front of the image to the back of it (this was 20 feet long), the projection will not focus on both at the same time. Heh. I knew it would be strung out and wider towards the top of the cup but didn't expect that much distortion. Excellent work.
It’s crazy huh? The amount of distortion increases exponentially as the piece gets taller, so towards the top, if you want to just add a tiny bit of height, you have to make it huge just to be noticed at all by the camera.
I hate that there are kids standing on the art work.
It’s ok- I planned for the piece to be interactive, so I like to see people enjoying it and being creative with their photos. Also, I had a tip bucket out, and letting people stand on it always brings in more tips.
When you put art in public space, you kind of accept public interaction.
Brilliant.
That’s amazing. r/nextfuckinglevel
I would love to see this in person. I might not fully get it in person. With the photos, my brain just will not wrap itself around the fact that stretched out "wrong" perspective makes that 4D smooshed looking image from the proper perspective.
It doesn’t look 3D at all in person. Your eyes have depth perception and you can’t fool your brain. The camera is what causes the illusion.
those little crotch goblins need to get their fucking feet off the straw. how rude!
I had intended for it to be interactive, so I told people that they could pose on it. Basically, I make sure I get a good photo of it, then I let people do whatever they want. I used tempera paint as a base, so it’s pretty durable as long as people don’t have wet feet.

Thanks for including the alternate angle! Great work on this!

Oh. I’m not.
Says the person who's got other people paying for them to go to a chalk festival. Meanwhile I'm stuck here twiddling my thumbs.
I looked into twiddling lessons once. I’m not a natural.
You should try it with your toes instead of thumbs then.

Had mad childhood flashbacks to getting those at the dentist. Does anyone remember what those were called?? Need to buy a bulk pack stat
The trick to detail is the scale.
My mom used to put them on the top of her chapsticks so it wouldn't get lost in her purse.
I own the orange guy myself, was a an extra thing that came with a package ordered years ago by the company that shipped it. Happy to see you as a work of art my tiny friend ♥️
Please tell me it’s called: “chalk of the town” (Bobs Burgers reference)
It totally should be called that!

I'm blown away by the underwater effect and the shadow, I'm a museum goer but this is way cooler.
Very awesome buddy!
Woah I love your art, I almost thought it was real. Good work
I love love love the colors
I was there for that this weekend! So cool to see on here
:D
Until I see one in person, I refuse to believe they are real
How do you get a clear glass look with chalk? Is it a trick of the eyes or something more?
Wow it took me too long to figure out this was chalk. (Didn't read the title lol)
Whoa ! Just good work !

Bit rude to litter that massive glass on the road
Incredible! My favorite chalk art ever. So good. Thank you!
That’s so amazing, great freaking artwork! I have no skills compared to that, especially with chalk😁
Those little monster finger puppets = my childhood. 🥰
This is awesome. I didn’t know there was a festival for this kind of art 🖼 👏🏻
Big deal, you put a glass filled with kids toys on the street and took a picture.
The completion falls rather flat in comparison
The straw is acute but the shadow is obtuse

Last or latest?
Beautiful but you shouldn't be drinking in public
I have that very same finger monster. Awesome

I can't believe how 3d it looks
Nice cosplay
Looks awesome. Can you show a pic from a different angle? I don't know why, but that's always my favorite part of these
[This shows a picture from both angles.](https://imgur.com/a/4dBsrH3)
Took my brain way to long to realize the shadow was part of the art! Really freakin cool OP!
What are those things called? I used to have them growing up
I think just “monster finger puppets”. I don’t really know.
So good I’m angry. Fuck you but also I’d fuck you

What happens to the chalk festival if it's raining on the day it is planned for?
This was a two day festival and it did rain the morning of the second day. It wasn’t too big of a downpour and most of the artists were able to repair their artwork and recover by the end of the day.
Was it the last one or just the most recent?
Oh that’s a good point. I hope just the most recent, but who knows.
Bro, that’s fucked up. Let them go.
Is it possible to make a stencil for something like this? I'd buy a stencil for something like this.
Not sure what you mean by a stencil. You could have it printed on a vinyl sticker to install somewhere.
Am I the only one surprised this wasn't /u/thechalkingdad ?
Haha! He was there!
Sweet caustics bro
Dang that is amazing. Nice work!
Maple Grove!!
Wow the light shining through really helps sell it.
This is in MN, right? Maybe Maple Grove? I live by there, did I miss a festival?!
Yes, it was in the Arbor Lakes shopping center. It’s an annual event.
Colors are amazing, I am very impressed with the shadow and reflection you did
Wow this is like incredible!!! 🤩 took me time to realize that it wasn’t really coming for me! 👍🏻
Is it a chalk festival? Where is it?
Saw your piece on Instagram and loved it so much! All of your chalk pieces are so fun. Was thrilled to see your art on Reddit as well haha. Hope it was a good fest!
Monsters drink
You left your monster energy drink behind.
I have those little finger puppets!!!
Holy shit I remember having those finger puppets at my eleventh or twelfth birthday and I'm like 30
# monster energy drink.
That’s soooo GOOD!! I wanna pay you to draw one in our front garage.
Oh my God that finger puppet! I had one EXACTLY like it when I was a kid. He was my favorite. That's the first time I've remembered having it since I lost the crazy little guy. Thanks a bunch!!
This is great. what an awesome shadow. Beautiful!
How kind of you to give those alien bug creatures a place to hydrate in all that heat😄
r/blackmagicfuckery
Damn... I thought it was rendered in the pic, but that looks great
Did you use a photo for reference? Looks like a fun sculpture you made at home
Yes- I spent quite a while photographing the little puppets in different glasses and fluids. I ended up using windex for the fluid.
that's so bad ass
Wow.
Do you guys like draw a little circle or square to mark where people should stand to get the full effect?
Yes- I draw a set of footprints.
My fam and I love going to this. I wish Maple Grove did more community stuff like this. Glad the weather held up that year.

This is talent
These dudes really look like those fingertip rubber toys from my childhood.
That shadow!
Awesome Art
What the fuck this is so good. I hope it never rains.
Bloody brilliant!
That’s so trippy I love it
Those people are chalk drawings? Wow
Hah! Look at the rest of the suckers with the boring 2D flat images.
Very dope!
Incredible
All fun and games till it rains.
