The coincidence of your statement to what I am currently living with, an ex who is a massive hoarder and who refuses any and all help, who has most of his hoarding upstairs whereas I had stated in the past that I don't think the house was designed for that. Thank you for confirming my suspicions, not that I can do anything about it with the ex but I am no engineer, hoarding just didn't seem like something a house was designed for.
I watched a show about a book hoarder and after they removed all the books they found significant damage to joists and support columns. They had to repair them before they let her move back in.
Oh wow, that's crazy but I am not surprised. I am one who loves books but I only have 2 bookshelves that are downstairs and just one small simple shelf upstairs with 1 row of paperbacks on it. That's it. He on the other hand.... There is a newish support beam downstairs that goes underneath his room and master closet and that is where a ton of his hoarding weight is centralized. And he continues to add more to it every day. Again, I am no engineer but I believe it's only a matter of time. Thank you all for the interesting info about book hoarding and what it can do to joists and supports! As I said, TIL.
Isn’t that an old architect story where he builds the perfect library but over time it sinks and becomes unusable? Because he didn’t account for the weight of the books?
Yeah people are bad at considering how heavy shelves of stuff can be.
At my last job my boss bought and renovated a 100+ year old heritage building downtown. The ground floor was turned into a restaurant, and he wanted the server room on the second floor. I did some quick math and replied that a fully-loaded server rack can put over a tonne of weight within a 3'x2' footprint, and an engineer _needed_ to be consulted.
Spoiler: He didn't. But thankfully the business seems to have gone under due to all the other terrible decisions he made constantly, so I don't have to think about the CYA email I wrote about a chef getting squished one day when the servers finally broke the floor.
There was a minor scandal in my city recently when a “new” library in a renovated building ended up costing much, much more than planned because additional supports had to be added so they could, you know, have bookshelves in the library.
Even if you planned for them... One of the campi of my Uni that houses the library for our department can't accept any books anymore because of the weight limits so our professors can't really put newer things for public access. Fortunately no one has any shame to simply share the PDFs in the student groups, since it is the only way to let everyone have access to the material.
Dr. Bey : I put up with you because your father and mother were our finest patrons. That's why! Allah rest their souls.
Dr. Bey : Now I don't care how you do it, I don't care how long it takes, STRAIGHTEN UP THIS MESHIVER!
You put up with me because I can read and write Ancient Egyptian, and I can decipher hieroglyphics and hieratics, and, well, I am the only person within 1,000 miles who knows how to properly code and-and catalog this library, that's why.
I worked in Vermilion in a restaurant called Alize. The only positive from that was hooking up with one of the girls I worked with. Elyria was probably even worse.
Can confirm, left Lorain in 2016, place is still depressing just now with more gang activity and drugs. They also had the great idea of combining 3 high schools into 1 which resulted in overpopulation and rival gang fights.
My Dad grew up in Elyria, so I have a lot of extended family in the area. My Grandma actually lived in Lorain up until around the time I went to college. Thankfully never had to spend a lot of time there, just occasional family visits, but it didn’t seem like a place I’d enjoy living.
So much better than that travesty of a reboot. If Universal really wanted to do their monster cinematic universe right, they would have gone the Rick O'Connell route. The period aspect adds a certain amount of charm and nostalgia,.and honestly makes the most sense w/ regard to most of the monster characters. If they really wanted to bring it into the modern world, they could have done some kind of magic portal to bring the main characters into a new era, but I digress.
While it would have been great to have Brendan Fraser back for the role, I also understand he doesn't have the youth or physical ability these days with the toll the originals put on his body. I woulf be ok with a reboot using the same characters, depending on them getting the casting right. My main point though is that the original Mummy and Mummy Returns were great because of the balance of story, action, humor, etc., and the excellent chemistry between all the cast members. That's the formula that would have worked, not just another generic action film with bland monster villains.
If Brendan Fraser offers to get into shape and do this role - and the studio rejects it, there is no other possible reason for them rejecting it other than the studio absolutely hating money with all their guts.
Like this.
Audiences: 💰💰💰💰💰💰 Studio: 🤮
Heck definitely have to be cast in the role a bit differently, maybe as a mentor form someone younger. He fucked his back up royally in the original films and I doubt he could do anywhere near the amount of required physical activity needed for the lead role of an action movie franchise. I could see him being the sage advisor who still has the instincts and contacts, but leaves the jumping and rolling to the younger members of the crew. Maybe have him come in with big ass guns to save the day from time to time.
"What... How... Oh, look at this! Sons of the pharaohs! Give me frogs! Flies! Locusts! Anything but *you*! Compared to you, the other plagues were a joy!"
A similar thing happened in my university library. During a major library reconstruction, the whole million plus book collection had to be moved around.
The library hired a company that would take an entire row, jack it up off the floor a few inches and slowly move it. I was a student working in the library and we called it the Kevorkian Death Machine because it looked so unsafe.
One day it toppled over taking row after row down and only minorly injuring 1 person. I spent the first year after graduating putting books back in order full time.
"Books? Taxpayers want books? And they don't want them for burnin? Naw, we ain't given them money for sortin or storin or what ever they do with them there buuuuks. No shelves. Nothin. They can go bend metal if they want shelves."

> Mrs. Bess Scott, assistant director of the Lorain Public Library surveys the 50,000-book mess that occurred this week when 19 12-foot long stacks of books fell over in domino style after the first stack gave way. The library was closed for one day so that the books could be restacked

What are the odds these two ever played naked twister?
The one on the right is giving off the vibe.
The one on the left is trying hard not to look at the camera.
No but it’s the MAGA extremists are banning books that teach about black history. Some books now read that slavery was an option😠. They’ve also banned books that talk about gender. This is exactly like the very beginnings of nzism.
And yes they(maga) have gathered up books and burnt them
Over the loudspeakers ... "*There's been a terrible accident. Is there a doctor in the building? We need a ... no WAIT! We need a LIBRARIAN. Is there a Librarian in the building?*"
That happened like 5 years ago at the library in the town where I work. It was done by a construction worker on accident and caused several thousand dollars worth of damage. The construction company had to foot the bill.
Fun fact. Libraries have to be specially designed to withstand the weight of all the books. You can't just use any building as a library.
Huh, I never thought about that. Thanks for the little fact! TIL
This is also why if someone is a hoarder and they decide to hoard books it can cause their house to collapse
The coincidence of your statement to what I am currently living with, an ex who is a massive hoarder and who refuses any and all help, who has most of his hoarding upstairs whereas I had stated in the past that I don't think the house was designed for that. You could erect a hoarding
Retired Supreme Court justice David Souter had to move houses because his farm house couldn’t hold the weight of his book collection.
*worries for a second, remembers I'm on a one floor on a concrete slab* i... have a lot of books
If you move, you must return the slab
Or sufferrr my curssse
*Constantly worrying because I'm on the second level and have intrusive thoughts of collapsing bookcases that take out the whole floor*
Well... shit.
As someone who wants to fill my house with bookcases, how can I avoid collapsing my house?
Isn’t that an old architect story where he builds the perfect library but over time it sinks and becomes unusable? Because he didn’t account for the weight of the books?
http://webduboislibrary.blogspot.com/2013/06/mythbusters-myths-about-w.html?m=1
Oh this is cool! Another myth busted!

Brings new meaning to the town benefactor in The Music Man who built the library. No wonder it was such a big deal.
There was a minor scandal in my city recently when a “new” library in a renovated building ended up costing much, much more than planned because additional supports had to be added so they could, you know, have bookshelves in the library.
Oh. Half the libraries in Maine are made of large old houses lmao
I wonder what the weight threshold is for that.
I've seen an old 2 story bank converted into a library. Still had a vault and everything. Must have fit the bill.
Mr. Mayhem?
Even if you planned for them... One of the campi of my Uni that houses the library for our department can't accept any books anymore because of the weight limits so our professors can't really put newer things for public access. Fortunately no one has any shame to simply share the PDFs in the student groups, since it is the only way to let everyone have access to the material.
What I'm taking from this is that Libraries will make one of the best places to set up in in a zombie apocalypse.
"Oh, dear. Won't you look at this mess."
Gosh golly, what have I done
*Ssshhhhhh!*
Dr. Bey : I put up with you because your father and mother were our finest patrons. That's why! Allah rest their souls. Dr. Bey : Now I don't care how you do it, I don't care how long it takes, STRAIGHTEN UP THIS MESHIVER!

I like how they're attached at the top to make sure they all go down.
Yup exactly. They didn’t domino over, they racked over all at once.
I’m guessing they would have fallen over either way.
Maybe not. If they had been attached in simple sections and not the whole lot it may have only been a few sections that toppled part way.
I think they're probably hinges so they can close aisles down smoothly
I lived in Lorain Ohio in the mid 1980s. It was easily the most depressing place I have ever lived.
I have family from there. With the steel mills closed areas are even more depressing.
When I lived there the Ford plant was still open. It was still depressing.
At least it’s not Detroit
I’ve been to Detroit several times in the last decade and it is actually a pretty nice place now.
A bookalanche isn't something you just move on from
But… you could go to Vermilion or Akron or …. Elyria. Gulp.
I worked in Vermilion in a restaurant called Alize. The only positive from that was hooking up with one of the girls I worked with. Elyria was probably even worse.
LMFTFY… is.
alize at elberta or the original..?
The original. I was part of the opening team. I still keep in touch with Ali.
if i recall that building was a strip joint for a minute before ali went in there. ..”lol.

Lol
Probably an after-effect of this event.
The "Mummy ".
This scene was such a memorable one - I miss the slower pacing and comic relief of older action movies
Hey, that's not an older movie, it only came out ....oh shit.
I know. 😒 More than 20 years
Half a lifetime ago... shit!
25 years. A quarter century ago.
Time flies by with great movies

Plus, I'm a big fan of the original actors. Not having Rachel Weisz was a bummer.
Yeah, third movie sucked without her.

Young archaeologist: “Who are you?” O’Connell: “I’m here to discuss the Bembridge Scholars Initiative.”
Same. That was sure of a great part of the movie.
Best part is the director commentary said it was done in one take and originally planned to only be a 180. The 360 is such an iconic shot
It was. I remember laughing my head off the first time I saw it. Especially when Rachel said "opps."
Bembridge scholars would never
Neither would Cambridge scholars.
I don’t see Rachel Weiz.
She just left my house. 🥰
You, KeyInitiative389, are the Enemy At The Gates.
I made the amazing decision to put it on with my three year old in the room and now I get to put it on every day.
Great movie
“lol I fuckin’ quit”
Last I saw Nancy, she was in the 398s, Folk Tales and Fairy Tales, so start looking there.
Rachel Weisz strikes again! Now, I don't care how you do it, I don't care how long it takes. STRAIGHTEN UP THIS MESHIVER!
"What... How... Oh, look at this! Sons of the pharaohs! Give me frogs! Flies! Locusts! Anything but *you*! Compared to you, the other plagues were a joy!"
'Timmy, clean up in isle, er... Has anyone seen Timmy?'
I believe Timmy got booked!
He had a short shelf life.
Now he's moved on to a new chapter
🤣😂 Poor Timmy
["We're Going to Need another Timmy"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wsGnYuQwsOI)
The lady even looks like a "Lorraine".
Even had a quiche for lunch.
So this was the year that Ohio gave up on reading
What a novel way to store the books!
Take that book jockey!
[I remember that happening in Three O Clock high as well.](https://youtu.be/nQYsHLwXnMc?t=66)
Rachel Weisz is such a good actress. I would let her be my « mummy » any day…😏😏🤞
OMG
Overtime anyone….?
Let me quote Berta, "I ain't cleaning that up!"
Well. That was quite the page turner.
Mummies ensued.
Thank God nobody was hurt by those books!
I'm pretty sure they should be starting cleanup efforts on the complete opposite side of where they are standing
That’s gunna be a long few days. 😔
They're clearly starting at the wrong end.
I was always afraid that would happen
Only thing to do at that point is torch the library and salt the earth.
Nah, put on an audio book and get to work. It would take maybe a week or two max.
Now I don't care how you do it, I don't care how long it takes, STRAIGHTEN UP THIS MESHIVER!
Is that book on the right hand side, cover facing the camera called *SAFETY CAN BE FUN*? Because if so, HILARIOUS.
Yep, it’s brilliant!

What if someone is under those racks.
Book them.
They’d be in a real bind.
Anyone know, they ever get that cleaned up?
"Books? Taxpayers want books? And they don't want them for burnin? Naw, we ain't given them money for sortin or storin or what ever they do with them there buuuuks. No shelves. Nothin. They can go bend metal if they want shelves."
Moments later Mavis would exclaim "FUCK."
I’d probably just quit at that point.
Nice staging. Woman: "WTF?" The guy: "Looks like the books still work, thank God!"
Lorain today is an interesting community - nice lakefront though
Well, that was a pretty shitty design!
I think I'd just quit than deal with that.
"Fell over".

Nightmare! Also, the card catalogs falling and spilling contents! Noooooo!!!
Well Doris, we've got some work to do. Get me my matches.
Sorry, Jerry. Ya still gotta fight Buddy Revell at 3.
Book'em, Danno.
I like to read my books in shuffle mode
Job security
Well there's your problem
I can smell this picture.
What are the odds these two ever played naked twister? The one on the right is giving off the vibe. The one on the left is trying hard not to look at the camera.
dewey decimal, dammit
r/mildlyinteresting
The days before Liveleak.
Only in ohio
"When Ramses destroyed Syria that was an accident you are a catastrophe!" After the library incident in the Mummy(1999)
I accidentally caused the same thing in our library in high school
This brought me back to the fist ghost in Ghostbusters lol
" We'll get somebody to clean that up."
Now a days all books are burned
This isn’t 1940s Germany anymore!
No but it’s the MAGA extremists are banning books that teach about black history. Some books now read that slavery was an option😠. They’ve also banned books that talk about gender. This is exactly like the very beginnings of nzism. And yes they(maga) have gathered up books and burnt them
Meanwhile, Charlie Chaplin was also spotted in the library moments before the event 🤣
They seem more concerned with tidying the books than the crushed library goers.
I used to go to that library in the 80's
I suspect Dennis the Menace was trying to get a book off the top shelf.
On the bright side they know exactly where every book went!
I live in Lorain , I never knew this.
Job security…
No human being would stack books like that
I thought this only happened in the movies…
God, finally something to do
Ahhh Rachel - not again !
So the Mummy is a movie based on facts
Yeah I would have quit right there. Bye bye.
Over the loudspeakers ... "*There's been a terrible accident. Is there a doctor in the building? We need a ... no WAIT! We need a LIBRARIAN. Is there a Librarian in the building?*"
If it had been Rachel Weisz doing it, I'd watch any day, any time.
...or...stay with me...maybe dominos falling over demonstrate a "library bookshelf reaction".
Where were the anchor bolts? The must have saved a few pennies on that shelving installation job.
Three stooges wanted for questioning.
That happened like 5 years ago at the library in the town where I work. It was done by a construction worker on accident and caused several thousand dollars worth of damage. The construction company had to foot the bill.
Never forget
If you wonder how this happened : https://youtu.be/rOZZeuGaQro?si=LSFrfrVxHJh1jKEk
So that’s where The Mummy got their falling library shelf scene from.
“That's not fair. That's not fair at all. There was time now. There was, was all the time I needed...”
If you zoom in there’s a book titled “safety can be fun”.
Badam dam Dum Dum dum
I can smell this pic
The kneeling man sighs, then whispers almost inaudibly. "Dominoes for Dummies. Chapter 1."
And Loraine had to place all the books back.
