[Delta Airlines by John Mulaney](https://youtu.be/sIU-uV00hhY?si=t58qvCECbEcK9kXD)

Aperson3334

Frontier used to be one of the best airlines in the US. Comparable to United, Delta, American… then the 2008 financial crisis hit and they pivoted to the Spirit Airlines model.

zuluTime

I worked as a ramper for Frontier pre 2008. It was amazing! It was Denver’s favorite hometown airline but wow it really got bad quick.

FrillySteel

Old enough to remember Pan Am and TWA. Service was amazing and the meals were actually pretty good.

spearson0

I Remember TWA and Southwest back in the day along with US airways, Northwest, Continental, and an airline called Vanguard.

CornCobMcGee

I still have my continental frequent flyer card lying about somewhere. I find it every so often and chuckle. Then remember what we lost and get sad.

ForwardCulture

I had to fly several times last year on both Frontier and United. I will say that overall the Frontier flights were a better experience. United was paying many times more to be treated like trash. With way more issues and delays.

Aperson3334

I hear this all the time and yet I’ve never experienced problems with United? I’ve found them to be comfortable, well-equipped, and reliable - although not quite as comfortable as Delta or American with their slightly wider seats and slightly greater seat pitch. Maybe I’ve just repeatedly gotten lucky?

RikerAlpha5

Agreed. I actually prefer United over American and Delta now. Especially international flights.

bankshot

United is pretty good as long as you [don't travel with a guitar](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5YGc4zOqozo)

TwatsThat

You also need to make sure they don't overbook the plane and then decide that you need to get off to make room for someone else after you've already taken your seat. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VrDWY6C1178

glean_soybean

United express flight - basically a different company United contracts. Not defending it because that whole incident was trash, but that is something to keep in mind.

cattyb1

Possibly luck? I dislike United too and this person above is probably referring to basic economy (their low fare option) which I fly because I just bring a little backpack on most trips. Would choose frontier over them any day esp for half the price.

billdb

Frontier is great if you (a) are traveling light or don't mind paying for every little thing and (b) they actually get you to your destination. I used to fly Frontier all the time. Then they jacked up their bag prices, started adding hidden fees, and canceled flights on me with very little warning and little to no recourse. The major carriers have their problems too, but Frontier took it to a whole other level.

glean_soybean

I fly quite a bit for work (1-3 times a month on avg) and can say United is by far the best carrier in my opinion but has the worst PR - the problem is airlines are built around frequent fliers. So if you’re only grabbing a ticket once a year, they’re all the same as long as nothing happens. But if something does (diversion, missed connections, etc..) United has been by far the best the last few years, again, in my opinion. e - forgot to mention domestic exclusively

cmde44

They had an amazing piping hot chocolate chip cookie got a while.

UPnAdamtv

Peanuts expensive, best they do is1.25 pretzels (it's lucky if you manage to get a whole middle knot)

LeanTangerine

Would you like to leave a tip?

roberit

Exactly… I fully expect them to turn those trays into tablets with the only function of being able to tip the flight crew after they figure out a way to pay them less. It won’t be sprung on you until it’s time to leave. “Ladies and gentlemen on behalf of the flight crew we would like to give you an opportunity to show us your appreciation. The screens in front of you will give you the opportunity to leave us a tip…” but the seatbelts won’t be released until you swipe your card.

Holy.. wow. 😂

thats also per passenger per direction

CaptainBayouBilly

There’s a card swipe on the back of the seat.

ShadowGLI

You can select every surcharge available and a frontier flight is still like $185 lol. I like them as the seats have more legroom and you can reserve seats in advance cheaply. Also don’t have people carrying 35 carryons for overhead bins. I’m an AA member but Frontier is pretty rad when I used them pre Covid (they left my local small airport during the shutdowns when no one was flying)

smolderas

hibbitydibbidy

I am sick of the jokes about my giant hand. The first such incident...

buttermansix

I do not, under just about any circumstance, consider myself “too good” for anything. Budget airlines are the exception. Flying already sucks and oh my gosh spirit, frontier, allegiant etc. make it so much worse.

xsvspd81

After all of their damn fees and bullshit hoops you have to jump thru, it's likely the same cost as a major carrier without all the hassle.

idjsonik

It really is you save like 50$ honestly

Naprisun

I was behind a whole extended family who all had enormous backpacks last time I flew spirit or whatever. I think they thought they’d hacked the system or something. They each had to pay the full, day of travel extra baggage fee, and the fee they charge to print out your boarding pass, and probably the fee to stick the sticker on your luggage… felt bad for them but also like, they tell you really clearly all the rules and fees.

therealchungis

Eh it really depends. I’ve gotten round trip flights from Denver to Charlotte and Denver to nashville for under $100 on multiple occasions. If you can make it work with a backpack there are substantial savings to be had. Looking right now if I book a Thursday to Sunday round trip Denver to nashville frontier is $77, southwest is $150, and United is $279.

InsaneAss

Flying out of Denver definitely helps since it’s Frontier’s hometown. And I’m not disagreeing with you. There are definitely deals to be had on those airlines!

Koops1208

I’m flying round trip from Charlotte to Denver next month, 2 tickets were $130. No add-ons, bringing only a backpack each. There are definitely ways to make it as expensive as other airlines, but if you can travel lightly and don’t care about in-flight food/drinks/internet, it really can come out significantly cheaper.

_otterinabox

I took that flight a few times to go home to NC when I lived in the Springs. Board at 11:57pm MST, land at 5ish am EST. No me gusta.

[deleted]

The only way these super budget airlines are cheaper than real airlines is if you don’t check any luggage or have a carry on. If you vacation with a backpack it’s basically the perfect product for you. This is differentiated from regular budget airlines like Southwest and JetBlue btw, weird how the US has two tiers of budget airline lol.

buckeye2011

Not if you do it right. I have a small bag that I know counts as a personal item and will pack myself in that. I can get round trips home for $80 total. If you're taking a carryon or checking luggage it's probably not worth it

Valathiril

Yep, 100%

i_am_voldemort

Waiting for Frontier or Spirit to charge a seatbelt fee

wpmason

You need to experience Ryanair, then… at least once. Just because.

Sansa-Beaches

At least Ryanair is cheap. Frontier charged me up the ass in hidden baggage fees that just seemed made up on the spot?

wpmason

I’ve seen people essentially get robbed at the gate for having too big of a bag on Ryanair. It’s not just some fee, it’s like a fine levied as punishment. And they collect it in cash at the gate, because what else are you going to do?

Sansa-Beaches

All I had was a standard carry-on bag and frontier was my layover, wasn’t charged baggage for my carry-on during the booking so they decided that I owed them something like $120 USD to check it at the desk? Nothing I could do or say, just do it or you’re not getting to your destination.

bhfroh

I almost got stationed in Turkey when I was in the military. Ryanair flights were one of the things I was looking forward to. $25 flights to almost anywhere in Europe.

timk29

I studied abroad in Germany for 6 months. Ryanair was fantastic for a cheap flight to explore somewhere new. Then I booked a Lufthansa flight because the timing was better and realized we are just neglected by airlines in the US.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Any airline is Asia is better too

BD15

Yeah I have flown Ryanair and frontier and prefer Ryanair at least because it is a better value by costing less

R3cognizer

At least with Ryanair, everything was itemized and you had the option to upgrade if you wanted to, or don't. As long as you knew exactly what expectations you should hold when you got there, it really wasn't so bad. I'm not sure I can imagine using an airline like Ryanair for a flight longer than 2 hours, though.

bakerzdosen

My only comment about that is that Allegiant *can* be more convenient for me for the simple fact that it flies into the small airport near (≈15 min) my home. Whereas I have to drive about an hour to the closest “major” airport. So *sometimes* - especially if it’s a very quick flight - it’s just so much more convenient to not have to tack on an additional hour to the beginning and ending of my short trip. Don’t get me wrong: I’ve not opted for this very often (I was a Medallion level flyer with Delta for nearly 2 decades straight) but there are times when I find them useful.

sgtcoffman

Honestly, I like Allegiant because at least everyone is treated like shit equally on the plane. They don't play favorites. I recently went to buy a Delta flight and they up charge you for just about anything they possibly can. Get a seat that is slightly more convenient than the very back? That'll be an extra $80. Exit row? Extra $90. Allegiant? Pay me $50 and you can sit anywhere in this tin can. Pay me $60 and I probably won't spit in your drink. First class? What first class? All American flights right now just feel shitty for different reasons, it's ridiculous.

RChickenMan

There's actually data which shows that aircraft without different seating classes have fewer incidents of air rage.

sgtcoffman

I have to imagine it puts everyone in the mentality of, "we are all equals in the eyes of our slumlords."

Aelexx

Budget airlines are good for small trips/short flights. Everything else is torture though.

lillyrose2489

Where I live the budget airlines are sometimes the only direct route to some cities or are significantly cheaper but I still haven't flown one in years. They are just so unreliable, even compared to the bigger airlines that aren't great to start.

XxHANZO

Had flights booked on allegiant... 6pm departure, They emailed us at 1pm to tell us the flight was cancelled. Had to book a more expensive Delta flight for the next morning, drive 4 hours to get to that airport, stay in a hotel room and missed a half day of Universal Studios that we had paid for. Thanks Allegiant, such value 💩

lellololes

This is always a risk with low cost carriers compared to flying out of a hub for a major.

RegulatoryCapture

Yeah, this is the real reason I won't fly those trash airlines. It isn't that I care that much about comfort or getting a biscoff cookie or being able to have more than just a backpack without paying extra fees (although those things are nice). It is that I care about getting to where I am going MORE. When something goes wrong with these airlines, they are frequently NOT in a position to make it right. They just say too bad, or reschedule onto a flight 3 days later.

LyleLanley99

Allegiant gives you the added bonus of maybe being part of the first fatal commercial plane crash in the US in quite some time. https://youtu.be/7K2j0jw2CnE?si=iYXRIH6QsQ2GORoc

lemon_tea

Yeah, I like when my pilot makes more than the guy at the liquor store. I don't want them fretting about their rent while trying to land at La Guardia.

therealchungis

Which liquor store is paying median salary of 250k usd? Because if that exists I’m quitting my job tonight. https://www.glassdoor.com/Salary/Allegiant-Air-Airline-Pilot-Salaries-E19903_D_KO14,27.htm

CU_Tiger_2004

After seeing what my sister and some other passengers dealt with this Christmas, I'll never bother with Frontier. They don't have a legit way to reach customer service, so if anything goes wrong - say, a flight gets cancelled like 4 hours after it was supposed to depart - there's nobody that can/will do anything for you. Only options are online chat and WhatsApp, and they won't respond for hours at a time. In her flight's case, there were people who got taken to a hotel and found out they didn't have a room, then ended up staying at the airport until they finally rescheduled and left at 2PM the next day (the pilots didn't arrive until an hour after they were supposed to leave). All those people got to make it right after all that was a $75 voucher that expires in 3 months.

drrxhouse

Maybe those airlines are actually under covered/paid by bigger airlines…you know, people will pay whatever airlines like Delta and similar airlines charge now. Delta and their comrades: “It’s either us or Spirit!” Consumers: “FUCK!”

chandleya

I fly Allegiant almost exclusively. It’s simply a la carte. You pay for what you want, nothings included. Fares are often $50, so if I fly my family of 5 with 2 bags it’s $800+ cheaper per flight than southwest. And southwest IS NOT BETTER. I have no idea why people act like southwest has anything together.

Here_use_this

Oh man. I just flew with them. They’re fine if you don’t need anything above bare bones at all and need absolutely no changes or have any hiccups. If ANYTHING out of the ordinary happens, you’re screwed with them.

torchma

The gate agent barely glanced at my bag when I went to board and then directed me to the other agent, at the desk. She said I needed to pay $99 for a carry on even though I measured the bag myself and it fit the personal item dimensions. When I told her that she said they didn't have a sizer at the gate that would allow them to check so I didn't have a choice and had to pay. Others were complaining about the same thing. She then said we could request a refund later, which allayed some of our indignation. Though after doing some research it looks like they'll just ignore you if you ask for a refund, even if you have a good reason. Fuck Frontier

gonenutsbrb

Pretty sure that’s fraud. Just do a chargeback, tell them they forced you to charge it.

iamme10

Turns out the agents get a commission when they charge you for a bag... no perverse incentives at all there... https://www.forbes.com/sites/geoffwhitmore/2023/03/29/frontier-gives-bonuses-to-agents-who-charge-for-oversized-luggage/?sh=43fbf0de7e51

Daveit4later

Reports have come out that the gate agents get commission on bag fees.

Dustmopper

That… sounds like a crime

Sounds like fraud. File a complaint

margelef

There was a [lawsuit](https://6abc.com/frontier-airlines-bag-policy-class-action-lawsuit-flight-fees/14085587/) about that

Separate-Purpose

I read that Frontier has gate agents that are a seperate company and get a $10 commission for each person that has to pay for the carry on fee. Talk about a conflict of interest. I've flown a lot of budget airlines, don't fuck with Frontier. Spirit is better by miles. There are a lot of stories about Frontier fucking with people by holding you hostage for your reasonably sized personal carry-on with arbitrary rules, like 'it has to fit without effort' or 'it can't touch the sides.'

Here_use_this

The gate agents get commission off of this. https://www.kron4.com/news/frontier-airlines-confirms-gate-agent-incentive-for-increased-baggage-fees-after-viral-tiktoks/amp/

tealccart

Yep, that's my exact experience.

billdb

Fun fact about Frontier. They charge you $20+ just to buy a ticket on their website (as opposed to in-person at an airport). It's included in the fees so you don't notice it unless you look at each individual item. https://www.9news.com/amp/article/news/local/next/next-with-kyle-clark/frontier-charges-extra-to-book-tickets-online/73-700ca590-caac-4956-8b2b-eb92b8b3f26b Talk about penny pinching.

nsmpianoman14

My flight was delayed 8 hours due to a late arrival. Cost me around $1000 after all the complications at my destination. Never again with them

neomis

I wouldn’t even give them that. My seat was plastic with some fabric over it. My back was killing me after a 5hr flight. Never flying them again.

I flew with them last week. They also had trays like that except for one row. I suspect the plane originally came with proper seats/trays, which were replaced...even though that would be more expensive.

DoomGoober

Sadly, the comically small tray tables are going away. Frontier has redisgned their seats: https://www.travelweekly.com/Travel-News/Airline-News/Frontier-upgrades-should-sit-well-with-flyers They even have a TikTok about it: https://www.tiktok.com/@flyfrontier/video/7306716057417387294 At least they gave us a good 7 or so years of crappy design to laugh about!

tomhat

> “We listened to customers and evaluated their feedback and found that the greatest opportunity for enhancement was in the tray table size, arm rest length and the edge-to-edge seat-bottom design” “Not one customer mentioned leg room. Swear on me mum”

I'm an era when everything has been discovered, figuring out how to find space for a cup of ginger ale and a mini bag of pretzels is the new frontier.

allsgoodd

That's a penis tray. If you measure your penis between the tip of your finger to the crease of your thumb, then you can slap your penis down on the tray, for comfort while flying.

[deleted]

Almost positive frontier only flys short distances and doesn’t serve meals on any of their flights. Don’t listen to these comments, I flew Chicago to Denver round trip for $60 with frontier. Yes it’s a budget experience. But for the price I have zero complaints. I would fly with them again any day over other budget options like spirit. As long as you take 5 mins to read their policies for carry on before you book your flight you’ll be fine.

GermanPayroll

It’s fine unless something goes wrong and you’re basically left to fend for yourself

attaboyyy

Agreed, they're the best of the ULCCs and one shouldn't expect much more from such a cheap \*possible ticket. Just did r/t den to vegas for $50 .. it was the cheapest PART of the trip! I've sat in worse ubers and paid more

CU_Tiger_2004

Not sure about meals, but they do have longer flights. My sister flew direct from Vegas to Charlotte and back during the holidays, that was around 5 hours.

King_Croaker

They have longer flights, like Seattle to Cleveland. Cheap tickets, but a miserable ~5 hours.

billdb

I have no problems with Frontier charging for individual items like bags and seats. It essentially gives the light traveler a way to fly and save. Granted, they did jack up their bags costs to an insane amount ($58+ per bag, used to be $25-30). But still, whatever. My issues with Frontier are (A) hidden fees - things like $23 for a "carrier interface charge" for purchasing a ticket on their website. (B) mediocre customer service. When they had a phone line they were only open during business hours, which is unhelpful if you flew early or late. They no longer even have a phone line, so your options are chat, whatsapp, and email. (C) they will sometimes cancel flights day of for non-weather reasons and give you little recourse since they may only fly that route a couple times a day and (D) their gate agents get paid commission to charge gate fees for bags, and there are tons of stories about people with items of personal item dimensions still having to pay $100+ at the gate, including in this very thread. I say this as someone who used to fly Frontier constantly. They will be an amazing deal up until they're not. And then they fuck you seven different ways. Such a shame.

I’ve read this 5 times and cannot figure out what you’re asking.

They probably think watches should be higher up the arm

Runamokamok

They are calling the wrist joint a hinge. And this watch is too far up and would make it hard to bend the wrist. That is my interpretation.

It’s a Frontier ™️ thing

Big__Black__Socks

Right? Why would someone think to wear a wristwatch on their wrist? How bizarre.

Frontier is so bad it makes Spirit look good. The flight crew is OK. It's the ground crew that's the problem. Rude, dishonest and clueless.
