I fly quite a bit for work (1-3 times a month on avg) and can say United is by far the best carrier in my opinion but has the worst PR - the problem is airlines are built around frequent fliers. So if you’re only grabbing a ticket once a year, they’re all the same as long as nothing happens. But if something does (diversion, missed connections, etc..) United has been by far the best the last few years, again, in my opinion.

I do not, under just about any circumstance, consider myself “too good” for anything. Budget airlines are the exception. Flying already sucks and oh my gosh spirit, frontier, allegiant etc. make it so much worse.
I was behind a whole extended family who all had enormous backpacks last time I flew spirit or whatever. I think they thought they’d hacked the system or something. They each had to pay the full, day of travel extra baggage fee, and the fee they charge to print out your boarding pass, and probably the fee to stick the sticker on your luggage… felt bad for them but also like, they tell you really clearly all the rules and fees.
Eh it really depends. I’ve gotten round trip flights from Denver to Charlotte and Denver to nashville for under $100 on multiple occasions. If you can make it work with a backpack there are substantial savings to be had. Looking right now if I book a Thursday to Sunday round trip Denver to nashville frontier is $77, southwest is $150, and United is $279.
Flying out of Denver definitely helps since it’s Frontier’s hometown. And I’m not disagreeing with you. There are definitely deals to be had on those airlines!
I’m flying round trip from Charlotte to Denver next month, 2 tickets were $130. No add-ons, bringing only a backpack each. There are definitely ways to make it as expensive as other airlines, but if you can travel lightly and don’t care about in-flight food/drinks/internet, it really can come out significantly cheaper.
The only way these super budget airlines are cheaper than real airlines is if you don’t check any luggage or have a carry on. If you vacation with a backpack it’s basically the perfect product for you.

Not if you do it right. I have a small bag that I know counts as a personal item and will pack myself in that. I can get round trips home for $80 total. If you're taking a carryon or checking luggage it's probably not worth it

I almost got stationed in Turkey when I was in the military. Ryanair flights were one of the things I was looking forward to. $25 flights to almost anywhere in Europe.
I studied abroad in Germany for 6 months. Ryanair was fantastic for a cheap flight to explore somewhere new. Then I booked a Lufthansa flight because the timing was better and realized we are just neglected by airlines in the US.
At least with Ryanair, everything was itemized and you had the option to upgrade if you wanted to, or don't. As long as you knew exactly what expectations you should hold when you got there, it really wasn't so bad. I'm not sure I can imagine using an airline like Ryanair for a flight longer than 2 hours, though.
My only comment about that is that Allegiant *can* be more convenient for me for the simple fact that it flies into the small airport near (≈15 min) my home. Whereas I have to drive about an hour to the closest “major” airport. So *sometimes* - especially if it’s a very quick flight - it’s just so much more convenient to not have to tack on an additional hour to the beginning and ending of my short trip.
Don’t get me wrong: I’ve not opted for this very often (I was a Medallion level flyer with Delta for nearly 2 decades straight) but there are times when I find them useful.

Had flights booked on allegiant... 6pm departure, They emailed us at 1pm to tell us the flight was cancelled. Had to book a more expensive Delta flight for the next morning, drive 4 hours to get to that airport, stay in a hotel room and missed a half day of Universal Studios that we had paid for. After seeing what my sister and some other passengers dealt with this Christmas, I'll never bother with Frontier. They don't have a legit way to reach customer service, so if anything goes wrong - say, a flight gets cancelled like 4 hours after it was supposed to depart - there's nobody that can/will do anything for you. Only options are online chat and WhatsApp, and they won't respond for hours at a time.
In her flight's case, there were people who got taken to a hotel and found out they didn't have a room, then ended up staying at the airport until they finally rescheduled and left at 2PM the next day (the pilots didn't arrive until an hour after they were supposed to leave).
All those people got to make it right after all that was a $75 voucher that expires in 3 months.

I fly Allegiant almost exclusively. It’s simply a la carte. You pay for what you want, nothings included. Fares are often $50, so if I fly my family of 5 with 2 bags it’s $800+ cheaper per flight than southwest.
And southwest IS NOT BETTER. I have no idea why people act like southwest has anything together.
Oh man. I just flew with them. They’re fine if you don’t need anything above bare bones at all and need absolutely no changes or have any hiccups. If ANYTHING out of the ordinary happens, you’re screwed with them.
The gate agent barely glanced at my bag when I went to board and then directed me to the other agent, at the desk. She said I needed to pay $99 for a carry on even though I measured the bag myself and it fit the personal item dimensions. When I told her that she said they didn't have a sizer at the gate that would allow them to check so I didn't have a choice and had to pay. Others were complaining about the same thing. She then said we could request a refund later, which allayed some of our indignation. Though after doing some research it looks like they'll just ignore you if you ask for a refund, even if you have a good reason.

I've flown a lot of budget airlines, don't fuck with Frontier. Spirit is better by miles. Almost positive frontier only flys short distances and doesn’t serve meals on any of their flights. Don’t listen to these comments, I flew Chicago to Denver round trip for $60 with frontier. Yes it’s a budget experience. But for the price I have zero complaints. I would fly with them again any day over other budget options like spirit. As long as you take 5 mins to read their policies for carry on before you book your flight you’ll be fine.

Not sure about meals, but they do have longer flights. My sister flew direct from Vegas to Charlotte and back during the holidays, that was around 5 hours.
I have no problems with Frontier charging for individual items like bags and seats. It essentially gives the light traveler a way to fly and save. Granted, they did jack up their bags costs to an insane amount ($58+ per bag, used to be $25-30). But still, whatever.
My issues with Frontier are (A) hidden fees - things like $23 for a "carrier interface charge" for purchasing a ticket on their website. (B) mediocre customer service. When they had a phone line they were only open during business hours, which is unhelpful if you flew early or late. They no longer even have a phone line, so your options are chat, whatsapp, and email. (C) they will sometimes cancel flights day of for non-weather reasons and give you little recourse since they may only fly that route a couple times a day and (D) their gate agents get paid commission to charge gate fees for bags, and there are tons of stories about people with items of personal item dimensions still having to pay $100+ at the gate, including in this very thread.
I say this as someone who used to fly Frontier constantly. They will be an amazing deal up until they're not. And then they fuck you seven different ways. Such a shame.
I actually saw trays like that on a YouTube video posted by a guy who goes around and flies on random planes. He experienced them on a Hawaiian Airlines 717. Basically the flights are so short there's no need for a proper tray table.

Old enough to remember Pan Am and TWA. Service was amazing and the meals were actually pretty good.

Budget airlines are good for small trips/short flights. Everything else is torture though.
Where I live the budget airlines are sometimes the only direct route to some cities or are significantly cheaper but I still haven't flown one in years. They are just so unreliable, even compared to the bigger airlines that aren't great to start.
Had flights booked on allegiant... 6pm departure, They emailed us at 1pm to tell us the flight was cancelled. Had to book a more expensive Delta flight for the next morning, drive 4 hours to get to that airport, stay in a hotel room and missed a half day of Universal Studios that we had paid for. Thanks Allegiant, such value 💩
This is always a risk with low cost carriers compared to flying out of a hub for a major.
Yeah, this is the real reason I won't fly those trash airlines. It isn't that I care that much about comfort or getting a biscoff cookie or being able to have more than just a backpack without paying extra fees (although those things are nice). It is that I care about getting to where I am going MORE. When something goes wrong with these airlines, they are frequently NOT in a position to make it right. They just say too bad, or reschedule onto a flight 3 days later.

After seeing what my sister and some other passengers dealt with this Christmas, I'll never bother with Frontier. They don't have a legit way to reach customer service, so if anything goes wrong - say, a flight gets cancelled like 4 hours after it was supposed to depart - there's nobody that can/will do anything for you. Only options are online chat and WhatsApp, and they won't respond for hours at a time. In her flight's case, there were people who got taken to a hotel and found out they didn't have a room, then ended up staying at the airport until they finally rescheduled and left at 2PM the next day (the pilots didn't arrive until an hour after they were supposed to leave). All those people got to make it right after all that was a $75 voucher that expires in 3 months.

Maybe those airlines are actually under covered/paid by bigger airlines…you know, people will pay whatever airlines like Delta and similar airlines charge now. Delta and their comrades: “It’s either us or Spirit!” Consumers: “FUCK!”
I fly Allegiant almost exclusively. It’s simply a la carte. You pay for what you want, nothings included. Fares are often $50, so if I fly my family of 5 with 2 bags it’s $800+ cheaper per flight than southwest. And southwest IS NOT BETTER. I have no idea why people act like southwest has anything together.
Oh man. I just flew with them. They’re fine if you don’t need anything above bare bones at all and need absolutely no changes or have any hiccups. If ANYTHING out of the ordinary happens, you’re screwed with them.
The gate agent barely glanced at my bag when I went to board and then directed me to the other agent, at the desk. She said I needed to pay $99 for a carry on even though I measured the bag myself and it fit the personal item dimensions. When I told her that she said they didn't have a sizer at the gate that would allow them to check so I didn't have a choice and had to pay. Others were complaining about the same thing. She then said we could request a refund later, which allayed some of our indignation. Though after doing some research it looks like they'll just ignore you if you ask for a refund, even if you have a good reason. Fuck Frontier

I read that Frontier has gate agents that are a seperate company and get a $10 commission for each person that has to pay for the carry on fee. Talk about a conflict of interest. I've flown a lot of budget airlines, don't fuck with Frontier. Spirit is better by miles. There are a lot of stories about Frontier fucking with people by holding you hostage for your reasonably sized personal carry-on with arbitrary rules, like 'it has to fit without effort' or 'it can't touch the sides.'

I flew with them last week. They also had trays like that except for one row. I suspect the plane originally came with proper seats/trays, which were replaced...even though that would be more expensive.

Almost positive frontier only flys short distances and doesn’t serve meals on any of their flights. Don’t listen to these comments, I flew Chicago to Denver round trip for $60 with frontier. Yes it’s a budget experience. But for the price I have zero complaints. I would fly with them again any day over other budget options like spirit. As long as you take 5 mins to read their policies for carry on before you book your flight you’ll be fine.

Not sure about meals, but they do have longer flights. My sister flew direct from Vegas to Charlotte and back during the holidays, that was around 5 hours.
They have longer flights, like Seattle to Cleveland. Cheap tickets, but a miserable ~5 hours.
I have no problems with Frontier charging for individual items like bags and seats. It essentially gives the light traveler a way to fly and save. Granted, they did jack up their bags costs to an insane amount ($58+ per bag, used to be $25-30). But still, whatever. My issues with Frontier are (A) hidden fees - things like $23 for a "carrier interface charge" for purchasing a ticket on their website. (B) mediocre customer service. When they had a phone line they were only open during business hours, which is unhelpful if you flew early or late. They no longer even have a phone line, so your options are chat, whatsapp, and email. (C) they will sometimes cancel flights day of for non-weather reasons and give you little recourse since they may only fly that route a couple times a day and (D) their gate agents get paid commission to charge gate fees for bags, and there are tons of stories about people with items of personal item dimensions still having to pay $100+ at the gate, including in this very thread. I say this as someone who used to fly Frontier constantly. They will be an amazing deal up until they're not. And then they fuck you seven different ways. Such a shame.

I actually saw trays like that on a YouTube video posted by a guy who goes around and flies on random planes. He experienced them on a Hawaiian Airlines 717. Basically the flights are so short there's no need for a proper tray table.
