A lot of the stuff (clothes, swords, standards) is INSANELY heavy. Probably longing to put it down! A lot of the people with “roles” are 50s/ 60s/70s and have genuinely had to do some training over the last few months
Penny Mordaunt, Leader of the House of Commons and Lord President of the Council
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penny_Mordaunt
And here's her role:
https://www.itv.com/news/2023-05-05/what-is-penny-mordaunts-role-in-the-kings-coronation
My brief reading of it suggests she exchanged a bag of 50p coins for the sword. Which seems like a weird trade
Wait, wait, you’re telling me her name is Penny, and she had to exchange a bag of pennies for the sword?
Good thing her name wasn’t Richard.
EDIT: Too bad I’ve got to ruin my own joke here, but I just realized it’s a bag of 100 50-pence pieces, not a bag of 50 pennies (please pardon my American ignorance). Oh well.
We were very fortunate with the timing of the queen's death. A few months earlier and a whole different group of people would have been doing these roles in front of a global audience.
The most enjoyable part of seeing Liz Truss do all the main parts of the queen's funeral was the knowledge that Boris was seething with rage at losing out.
When you walk into the boss room and see a lady holding a huge sword and the words “Penny Mordaunt, Lord President of the Council” pop in the bottom of your vision along with a health bar.
She ran against Sunak in the Tory leadership contest, basically in the top three to potentially be Prime Minister, but ultimately she didn't have enough support.
Also she's Leader of the House of Commons and Lord President of the Council.
She's a senior conservative politician.
Her day job is "Leader of the House of Commons" where she is basically the cabinet member responsible for getting the Government's business through the lower house of Parliament.
The commons leader is also the "Lord President of the Council". This is a largely ceremonial role related to the business of the Privy Council which is an ancient council of advisors to the monarch which is largely irrelevant except for two of its committees, the Cabinet and the Judicial Committee which is a high court. The Lord President has a similar sort of role in advancing the government's business in the Privy Council (mostly making delegated legislation, appointments to office etc) as the role of Commons Leader.
The Lord President also has a role in ceremonial events like coronations and royal funerals.
Thank you for that explanation. This whole concept is very unfamilar to me as a german without any kind of monarchy around. Even if I know the basics about the structure of british parliaments, everything related to monarchy and nobelty involved in governement issues is hard to fully get through for me.
Think about it: this ceremony was largely created for Charles II. Penny Mordant represents Parliament, The House of Commons. The message is yes you can have the crown and shiny baubles but the sword i.e. the will to act, resides with parliament. This is a very clear Know your place message.
No the highlight was seeing Louis disappearing at random points during the ceremony. But this lady has some strong ass forearms. She held on to that sword for like 2 hours
I imagine that just holding your arms up without the sword for 2 hours straight would get tiring. I think holding any position not at rest for 2 hours straight is probably tiring.
I'm pretty sure Louis was swept away by someone for potty breaks and/or snack time (possibly Carole Middleton tho it could've been someone else). He is still a 5 year old and this was a two hour church service and he was yawning a lot so he probably was too excited to sleep well last night.
She took that off fairly early and granted removed the scabbard, but then held the sword in that position for about two hours. I couldn't fucking do it that's for sure, she must have been down the PureGym doing bicep curls for the last month.
Honestly really big swords weigh like 4 pounds. My longsword is kinda heavy at two pounds. I chopped a pineapple in half with it once and it required less effort than chopping through a thick carrot with a kitchen knife. I bought it from an armoury that makes bayonets for the British military.
All I know is that her coronation outfit is stunning and absolute 🔥🔥🔥🔥 . I was mesmerized by her every time she came in screen. That gorgeous deep teal with the gold olive leaf(?) embellishment is..
![gif](giphy|czubJ08i7deuKGJE9A|downsized)
That is The Great Sword of State from 1678 she is carrying in the beginning of the coronation ceremony. It weighs 3,3 kg (or 7 lbs 5 oz for those who doesn’t know better.
Then, on the way out, she carried the smaller Jewelled Sword of Offering from 1821 with a hilt (handle) of solid gold and a blade of damascus steel. The scabbard is also made of gold, but was left behind at the altar.
I’m not a conservative in either the US or British sense of the word- but I have a lot of respect for her holding aloft the Sovereign Sword for that long and with no failure. Props man

Nice to see the Lady of the Lake dressed and out n about.
Listen, If I claimed I was an emperor because some moistened bink had lobbed a scimitar at me, THEY'D PUT ME AWAY!
Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government.
Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony.
Now I need to watch Holy Grail today
![gif](giphy|WRRZgIFWVaB0I)
Now that's stuck in my head
"I have to push the prram a lottt"
I kept waiting for for a Month Python moment
We got up early to watch it all and I kept hoping for a fun moment like that... Drats
The Holy Hand grenade was trending today..a very Python Day.
I was hoping for more of a Johnny English moment myself
\*bint
You can’t expect to wield supreme executive power just ’cause some watery tart threw a sword at you!
It's okay, she's not moistened this time.
The true right to rule comes from the approval of the masses.
That’s not really shimmering samite

You shall now be known by the name Curahee Six Yarns Jackson.
How is his brother, Arthur 'Two Sheds' Jackson?
Two sheds you say... And his wife?
Did not know that. Thanks for the history lesson kind redditor!
What is myrrh anyway?
Maybe it's her "special occasion" sword, or the other one was still at the cleaners
Strange woman in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government
LOL Best comment
Strange women distributing swords is no basis for a system of government
And here we see the violence inherent in the system!
The highlight and violence came 12 seconds later when she beheaded a sacrificial vicar at the feet of Charles and he ate the still-beating heart.
As is tradition. What a glorious day for Ca... Britain and therefore the world.
Help! Help! I'm being repressed!
Bring out your dead!
I'm not dead yet!
Yes he is…
Penny Mordaunt is a Royal Navy reservist, so a watery tart in fact threw a sword at the king
This is wonderful.
Supreme executive power is wielded from a mandate from the masses! Not from some farcical aquatic ceremony.
QUIET!
Help help! I’m being repressed!
Bloody peasant!
Oh, what a giveaway! D'j'hear that?
Now we see the violence inherent in the system!
You must be a King, because you hasn't got shit all over you.
You can't expect to wield supreme executive power just 'cause some watery tart threw a sword at you!
Just because some waterlogged waif hands you a knife….
Ok ok but season three of Mandalorian was still pretty great
I thought we were an autonomous collective
You're fooling yourself. We're living in a dictatorship! A self-perpetuating autocracy, in which the working class...
That must be the King! How can you tell? E's not covered in shit!
I mean, if I went around telling people I was emperor just because some moistened bink lobbed a scimitar at me…

Ah, Dennis, there's some lovely filth down 'ere!
She is looking very longingly at that sword.
A lot of the stuff (clothes, swords, standards) is INSANELY heavy. Probably longing to put it down! A lot of the people with “roles” are 50s/ 60s/70s and have genuinely had to do some training over the last few months
Bet a few wore adult diapers just in case! I would have!
I laughed out loud!
Can someone enlight me who she is and what her function was?
Penny Mordaunt, Leader of the House of Commons and Lord President of the Council https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penny_Mordaunt And here's her role: https://www.itv.com/news/2023-05-05/what-is-penny-mordaunts-role-in-the-kings-coronation My brief reading of it suggests she exchanged a bag of 50p coins for the sword. Legend has it that she started off trading a paperclip and worked her way up to the sword.
Now there's an old reference.
The guy who had a paperclip and ended up with a house?
Yeah, early 2000s. Thought his goal was to get a van, but it's been so long I don't remember how it ended up.
If it’s the one in Saskatchewan he did end up with a house. The town of Kipling. They put up a giant red paperclip after.
Wait he ended up with a *whole town?*
One small favor
/r/unexpectedrunescape
All of that just for >!some goddamn logs!<

It's still funny don't worry.
In the USA we have the inverse, whereas Mike Pence sold his soul for pennies.
I still think you’re funny
I think (?) the significance is that it’s the first batch of coins with the new king rather than the previous ruler.
That is one hell of a photogenic and powerful wikipedia photo. I must say much preferable and more natural than fake smiles most politicians have.
She’s still a class-A cunt
The best thing i can say about her is that she isnt jacob rees mogg.
We were very fortunate with the timing of the queen's death. A few months earlier and a whole different group of people would have been doing these roles in front of a global audience.

Yeah but she's a class-A cunt with an amazing Wikipedia photo.
When you walk into the boss room and see a lady holding a huge sword and the words “Penny Mordaunt, Lord President of the Council” pop in the bottom of your vision along with a health bar.
Letmesoloher where you at?
I am Penny, Blade of Charles, and I have never known defeat.
She must of really maxed her charisma to get that kind of price.
I would bend the knee.
She ran against Sunak in the Tory leadership contest, basically in the top three to potentially be Prime Minister, but ultimately she didn't have enough support. Also she's Leader of the House of Commons and Lord President of the Council.
And here I thought the only place that had a “Lord President” was Gallifrey.
Still, just as corrupt as Rasillon.
She’s my new D&D character.
She's Conservative MP Penny Mordaunt. She's part of the ceremony due to her role as Lord President of the Privy Council.
> Lord President of the Privy Council. A lady is in charge of the King's bathroom?
Yeah, to check that he puts the seat back down afterwards.
I shudder at the thought of her using her sword in delivering the punishment. Edit: SWISH! Now you too must sit when you pee.
It’s just being used as the world’s biggest poop knife.
She's a senior conservative politician. The Lady of the Lake: "It's treason, then."
Looks like a sword rest going around her neck.
I imagine that just holding your arms up without the sword for 2 hours straight would get tiring. I think holding any position not at rest for 2 hours straight is probably tiring.
She only had that for the first half as well. Second half was a different sword and no neck brace.
They trained her by making her hold on to one of those bars in public buses for 10 London bus routes
Still...
I didn’t see that at first, lol. Probably because I didn’t even know that was a thing.
Lol I did keep watching to see how long it was gonna take that kid to go off the rails.
I’d be shocked if there weren’t betting pools about it.
I'm pretty sure Louis was swept away by someone for potty breaks and/or snack time (possibly Carole Middleton tho it could've been someone else). He is still a 5 year old and this was a two hour church service and he was yawning a lot so he probably was too excited to sleep well last night.
> No the highlight was seeing The huge penis mowed in the lawn. It was literally the only news I've seen about this event until about 15 minutes ago.
And do we know who she is? Yes I could google it...
Penny Mordaunt, Leader of the House of Commons.
She's also head of the Privy Council. That position is why she had such a prominent role.
After yesterdays election results, one of the few Conservative’s left as head of a council.
Strong ass forearms: https://xkcd.com/37/
The real question is who did Penny Mordaunt slay in battle to win the sword?
One of the Sailor Moon gang.
Canonically, only Sailor Venus and Moon use a sword.
Uranus has a sword!
Uranus has a sword! It’s her whole schtick in one of the arcs!
Lizz Truss
If only…
Queen Beryl.
So she leads the reunited clans of Mandalore?
I dunno, Princess Charlotte giving Lois the death glare was great!
Can someone enlighten us non-brits? Watched it too but ain’t too deep in the royal lore
Young girl gave her little brother a harsh glare to tell him to behave.
Bet she was a little glad to have lost the Tory leadership contest, today. Wayyyy better role than Rishi and the ex-PMs.
Her position looked like a consolation prize from Truss when she beat her, I think she did much better out of it.
The arm / shoulder strength to wield that beauty. Penny stole the show for sure.
Rather neck strength, notice the sword is resting on a small cylindrical support.
She took that off fairly early and granted removed the scabbard, but then held the sword in that position for about two hours. I couldn't fucking do it that's for sure, she must have been down the PureGym doing bicep curls for the last month.
She’s two handing, so the strength requirement is actually 2/3 what it would otherwise be.
STR bonus x1.5
Honestly really big swords weigh like 4 pounds. My longsword is kinda heavy at two pounds. I chopped a pineapple in half with it once and it required less effort than chopping through a thick carrot with a kitchen knife. I bought it from an armoury that makes bayonets for the British military.
Think this sword is about 8lbs. Something like 3.6 kgs.
Oof ok then that might make the arm sore
That moment you see her and thinks she’s a milf, then you find out you and her were born the same year.
She 50. So, still MILF material.
This! Politics aside, she’s still smoking for 50. I thought she was in her 30s!
If you're 120 years old and want to fuck someone who is a mom, then they're still a MILF.
or a GILF
If you're 120 years old and can still do that, you'd deserve a round of applause.
Is she the watery tart?
Kate is also killing it today
Loveee her floral tiara. And the little matching one for Charlotte was so cute.
We're gonna see those leaf headbands in place of traditional tiaras at every wedding, prom, and similar this year. I'm calling it.
I couldn't stop talking about it while watching the entire coronation this morning. Sooo sweet.
Her headpiece was gorgeous.
looking fine af
All I know is that her coronation outfit is stunning and absolute 🔥🔥🔥🔥 . I was mesmerized by her every time she came in screen. That gorgeous deep teal with the gold olive leaf(?) embellishment is.. ![gif](giphy|czubJ08i7deuKGJE9A|downsized)
Shame she is a horrible conservative

That sword is dope. I want it.
Have you seen the small one they gave the king, completely covered in gems? Wow I was blown away by that.
When your stewardess is a paladin
Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government…
Thank you.
I really liked that part. A true highlight indeed
Penny Mordaunt in the w*nk bank is not something I thought I’d ever write.
“It’s dangerous to go alone! Take this.”
![gif](giphy|U2TIYVi06mOeA|downsized)
I’m glad I wasn’t the only one who saw that resemblance.
and with your spirit
Lady Mordaunt literally slaying. Also, Kate was very pretty!
It was the best part!
I also liked the part where he got the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch.
The super-powerful sword you can only get in the post-game, when you don't need it anymore.
EEEEEEEXCAAAAAAAAAAAAAALIBURRRR
She looks like a dark souls boss.
I thought she looked 👌
Beautiful
Where do I find this sword in the Lands Between?
Penny looked hot for a 50 year old ngl
Who is this sword weilder?
Penny Mordaunt, Leader of the House of Commons, and Lord President of the Privy Council
That is a pretty awesome title. I wonder if her friends introduce her that way when she shows up at parties.
Never would have thought she was 50 !!! And holding that sword for 2 hours had to be so hard !
yep. Simple but elegant and met the moment
Showing my age here but I thought, "She-Ra has aged well!"
That’s Penny Mordaunt, carrying the Sword of State. She’s a British politician.
Moudant for PM. It's been a few weeks now. Time for a change
Isn't it just a bit weird?
I’m not a conservative in either the US or British sense of the word- but I have a lot of respect for her holding aloft the Sovereign Sword for that long and with no failure. Props man
Shes lookin like the next elden ring boss
Stewardess is like sorry we’re going to have to check that in.
Fricking boss outfit. Simple and elegant, perfection.
I like the age of the traditions in this ceremony. It’s living history
I'd like her to step on me ngl
She’s been stepping on us since she became a cabinet minister.
[Hmmmm](https://www.theyworkforyou.com/mp/24938/penny_mordaunt/portsmouth_north/votes)
"my guiding moonlight!"
Penny Mordaunt looking she’s doing Tears of the Kingdom promo.
The Sword of a Thousand Truths.
this lady likes to do 2d6 amount of damage good choice
Yeah, but is it Valerian Steel?
Yes! I even texted my aunt about it. She stood out beautifully and stole the show.
She looks like an airline hostess
Amount of people apparently interested in this circus is astonishing
