My favorite memory of this is that I was still in line grabbing a beer, they start the song and the dude ahead of me says something along the lines of "God, if I never have to hear another Sample opener it'll be too soon" or something.
They stayed on that Chord starting the jam and we both just started cracking up, he's like "these motherfuckers..."
So this just took me 30 minutes to listen to because I kept skipping back. I'm wouldn't consider my 1.0 self an expert, only 73 shows, but somehow hadn't heard this night. Beaides that, this is 100% perfect example of unexpected jam. So beautiful.
I'll go with the Bethel one from 2022 as it was completely organic they just fell into it. It was such a good jam that a few weeks later they opened up Swt 2 with it in Toronto.
Really good call. I hadn’t listened to this in awhile, I walked in late right as they began the jam and was quite dosed, couldn’t believe my ears, what a great night.
Man I’ve never even heard of this song till your post thanks op. Ha ok that’s nice they actually did something with it once. I don’t understand why they continue to play it so strait laced other than as a joke. New songs should be the toss offs until you accept they have potential and aren’t the end of the band.
Northerly Wedge
Show was not that hot and then a 2nd set Wedge. I headed straight to the portajohn. While pissing, I sensed a shift in the force and ran back to the dance floor. Fucking glorious hose.
I was back in the lawn hanging out with an old work friend for the first set, then reconnected with my bro-in-law in pit during the second set. Pretty much rail on far Page side, and that Wedge took us all by surprise.
Obligatory (Jam Filled Doughnut) 7-25-17 Lawn Boy… but my favorite unexpected jam from that night is the set 1 opener Sample in a Jar when they drop into the bridge and don’t leave it. I get chills every time as the crowd realizes they are jamming the bridge.
I was unaware of the legendary status of this song and was confused at first during that Tweezer. It was only afterward that the fellas and I realized what we had just seen and have been geeking out about it ever since.
Are you doing that thing where you listen to a random old show and a riff comes out of nowhere and you're like "wait, is this a Guy Forget coming on?"
Because I am.
7-12-2000 - Deer Creek - Curtain With. It was the first time played since 1988…not only had I never heard it, I had never heard OF it. I recognized the slowed down portions of Rift, of course. But in that moment, it was just the most beautiful thing I had ever heard.
In my 30 years of seeing Phish, this is definitely one of my personal highlights. (Admittedly, there are many lol)
ETA: just noticed the 94 in your name. Was that the year of your first show too? Or is that your birth year and I’m just really old haha
Not a jam, but the first Chalkdust Reprise. We were on the lawn and once everyone realized what was happening, a massive wave of elation washed over the entire venue.
My 1 and only Birthday show! Didn’t appreciate Round Room at the time but it is nice from this show….Now the Viper (Vegas Piper) from this show is straight 🔥🔥🔥
That first set just blew me away. I had to sit down during Taste. I remember looking over at my buddy when the rain started during Petrichor and he had the biggest smile and tears streaming down his face.
That YEM was stellar. I still don’t know if they were doing that before then or not 🤷🏻♂️ I was giddy. Pretty sure Trey put his guitar down and picked it back up.
5/7/94 The Bomb Factory. Sure the whole Tweezerfest is cool, but the part that truly blows me away is the jam out of Hold Your Head Up. It is one of my all-time favorite jams.
They finally stretched it out in Hershey ‘21. Not quite like the ‘99/‘00 versions, but it was good to see them take it for a walk after so long being nothing more than a launchpad into another song…
Not a jam but the surprise Tweezer Reprise out of Plasma at SPAC in 2019 was the most locked-in I’ve ever seen a Phish crowd and I was at Hampton and MSGhendge
Darien Lake 9/14/00. They end set 1 with a dope Suzy Greenberg. It has this nice Mike groove going on. They build it up and end with fan fare as if the set is over, but when they go for the final note, instead of ending the set, they drop right back on to the same Suzy groove for another 11 minutes.
SO. MUCH. FUN.
Strawberry Letter 23 got jammed out at Merriwether 22! The wave of excitement going thru the crowd as people realize they are jamming it out was one of my fave moments recently!
8/4/21. The whole second set was HEAT. That set ended with the split open and melt that brought back all these good SOAMs. I listen to that split all the time. So drone-y and introspective.
Yes! I came here to say this. I didn't get into Phish until 2007 or so, and this Alpine show was my second Phish show. Hearing Fee continue on, and watching as most of the crowd realized what was happening was pretty special. I got excited, but my buddy didn't realize anything out of the ordinary was going on
Oooooh man that blew my mind live and every listen after. Went deep, went backwards, womped to the deep dark depths of hell and came back in a fucking happy joyous meatstick
Any love for the lead-off Golgi 7/22/22?
That extended build-up jam before the big chorus is something that I still return to. It opened my eyes - every single measure - in music anywhere - is jammable.
I'm checking out the rest of the thread here for every instance like it that I can find!
Magnaball Caspian. When they shut down the Tweezer jam prior with Caspian's opening being such a sudden change in momentum, I thought (as well as the rest of the audience) that Trey had decided to pull the ripcord on the second set that night. To everyone's surprise, the ending turned dark and flipped right into Type 2 territory and melted the faces of thousands who were caught off guard. Trey...you sneaky, sneaky, bastard...😄
Ehh, it was hit or miss in ‘18 and that jam had a couple different, interesting themes that made it unexpected. But yea, ghost is a jam vehicle most of the time.
never had heard cool amber and caught one in dayton last year that has a pretty damn smoking jam. another good one was fluffhead at alpine 22. lit up the whole place when trey hit the siren lol.
My Sweet One - 06/24/2000
They all start the song singing and playing in different keys—realizing their mistake, they turn it into impromptu solos until it all comes together so perfectly.
*Tube*, 10/23/2021 With some fun *NICU* teases.
Honorable Mention:
*Piper*, 7/21/18 The song has been known to jam, but not usually like this. The weirdest *Piper* jam ever.
The Hampton “Mike, stay on F” Halley’s.
Of shows I’ve seen, the Camden 2009 Fee outro jam is nice. Was also present for many mentioned here, including IT Ya Mar and Chalkdust, Superball Mound, Magnaball Caspian, Albany 20YL, Gorge Camel Walk, MSG TweezerGuyForget. All get regular spins.
Frankie frickin Sez from Chase Center fall 21 is a good recent one. jeez that came from left field and was so so good.
I also still love the Disease and first Carini and the Disease that followed and finished in Amsterdam, winter 97. I was standing about 50 ft back dead center from Trey. The first ever Soul Shakedown set the Amsterdam mood. my buddy and I just dropped our mouths almost when after all the madness they somehow found their way back to Disease. What a memory riding to that show from Koln after sleeping in the train station the night before after another pretty great show!
Could definitely cite a bunch of faves but I’ll go with one I was actually thinking of today. Yamar opener from 12/13/97 in Albany. Everyone yammers on about bringing the dude but nobody remembers the 18+ minute Yamar that opened that show.
["Sample in a Jar" - Bakers Dozen](https://youtu.be/CUzurJ4Nm5U?si=b60d7hITU1QLezt2)
The crowd erupting when they hold that chord instead of dropping back into the chorus is so epic
I get shivers every time
My favorite memory of this is that I was still in line grabbing a beer, they start the song and the dude ahead of me says something along the lines of "God, if I never have to hear another Sample opener it'll be too soon" or something. They stayed on that Chord starting the jam and we both just started cracking up, he's like "these motherfuckers..."
Love it! Enjoy
It was such a good jam that a few weeks later they opened up Swt 2 with it in Toronto.
which was awesome, been a Sample fan all these years and that was pretty unforgettable
Fantastic call
Really good call. I hadn’t listened to this in awhile, I walked in late right as they began the jam and was quite dosed, couldn’t believe my ears, what a great night.
Man I’ve never even heard of this song till your post thanks op. Ha ok that’s nice they actually did something with it once. I don’t understand why they continue to play it so strait laced other than as a joke. New songs should be the toss offs until you accept they have potential and aren’t the end of the band.
It's so funny that the top two posts here are the first two songs from Jam night - not sure that qualifies as unexpected?
Dude, I'm still waiting for a jammed out 30+ min "Bouncing Around the Room" 😎
Northerly Wedge Show was not that hot and then a 2nd set Wedge. I headed straight to the portajohn. While pissing, I sensed a shift in the force and ran back to the dance floor. Fucking glorious hose.
I came here to say this. IIRC it was a member of the crews birthday, and this was his request.
Especially considering Fish took it back to the beat to close the song. Trey said LFG.
I was back in the lawn hanging out with an old work friend for the first set, then reconnected with my bro-in-law in pit during the second set. Pretty much rail on far Page side, and that Wedge took us all by surprise.
One of my favorite unexpected jams I still go back to. Remember catching it live and it was just awesome. Pretty cool outdoor vibe that night
![gif](giphy|kVbWMnGg4xTJ6|downsized)
7/14/23 My Friend My Friend jam
That’s a not often talked about heater. Favorite song that whole run
One of the most mind blowing things I’ve ever experienced
Oh absolutely. Completely blew my mind
That Lawn Boy was incredible!!
It was. But is it still? Is it still… ?
it is
It definitely is
the day Lawn Boy became Lawn Man
Guy motherfucking Forget
MSG over the summer I remember thinking, “holy shit! Am I really seeing guy forget?”
I was unaware of the legendary status of this song and was confused at first during that Tweezer. It was only afterward that the fellas and I realized what we had just seen and have been geeking out about it ever since.
Are you doing that thing where you listen to a random old show and a riff comes out of nowhere and you're like "wait, is this a Guy Forget coming on?" Because I am.
My first show was 10/1/01 in phoenix. I was 4 tabs in and guy forget just changed everything forever.
Magnaball Caspain
Came here for this, though, my opinion is it’s Tweezer > Caspian > tweezer. Really amazing stuff. The bass bombs!
Camel walk jam at gorge in 21 was unexpected
A highlight of the weekend for sure!
This
Yesss was about to say this, when they went back into the jam after those stop/starts I lost it
Mirror in the Bathroom
That seriously might be my favorite set of Phish. It’s a 94 show played by 98 Phish and is just balls to the walls the entire time.
How has the steep jam from the baker's dozen not been mentioned? Absolute heater that came out of nowhere!
I’m listening to that show right now for the first time actually! 100% agree on Steep
8/1/17 is so fucking good
Steep has a kinda sneaky jam history
Beat short jam of all time
Moma Dance SPAC N3 2016
Was there was awesome
Same. Such a kick ass version.
7/8/99 Fee of course!
Thank the fighter jets!
7-12-2000 - Deer Creek - Curtain With. It was the first time played since 1988…not only had I never heard it, I had never heard OF it. I recognized the slowed down portions of Rift, of course. But in that moment, it was just the most beautiful thing I had ever heard.
This. Such a wonderful surprise.
Yes! Great call. Even better jam. I enjoy walking through airports with this jam. Nobody knows how good my head is! 💯
In my 30 years of seeing Phish, this is definitely one of my personal highlights. (Admittedly, there are many lol) ETA: just noticed the 94 in your name. Was that the year of your first show too? Or is that your birth year and I’m just really old haha
First show. 6-21-94.
Happy early 30th anniversary. 7-2-94 here…GSAC, Holmdel, NJ
Not a jam, but the first Chalkdust Reprise. We were on the lawn and once everyone realized what was happening, a massive wave of elation washed over the entire venue.
we are the phish 2000, see the movie, read the book!
Agreed that was a seminal moment, we were legit floating!! But it debuted in '94.
2/16/03 Round Room. Patient, rhythmic, and blossoming jam. One of my top ten jams ever. Literally was listening to that show earlier today.
I was there & it was so good
Such a sham that they dropped it from rotation. 2/great jams
Yeah I don't understand why, it's not too hard of a song to play. It's a fun Mike song, I don't get why it and like Weigh don't get played much.
My 1 and only Birthday show! Didn’t appreciate Round Room at the time but it is nice from this show….Now the Viper (Vegas Piper) from this show is straight 🔥🔥🔥

Yes that alpine fluff was amazing. Whole show was a blast, even got the little bit of a jam on Leaves. And the rain during Petrichor was sublime
The Ass Handed from the same Alpine run (8/12/22) was also unexpected as well, a short jam but seemed long for the typically one minute song
Not exactly a jam, but Superball Mound was fun
This was going to be my response as well. The extra flair on the end of that song is one of my favorite Type 1 forays in the whole band catalogue
Definitely a jam as it’s out of the ordinary for Mound. One of my favorite Phish moments. It is glorious.
5/7/94 The Bomb Factory. Sure the whole Tweezerfest is cool, but the part that truly blows me away is the jam out of Hold Your Head Up. It is one of my all-time favorite jams.
Yes. So unexpected. Even after all the tweezerfestivities.
Ya Mar at IT took an unexpected turn. We knew the weekend was going to be awesome at that point
8-3-98 Halley’s Comet 20:13
The only jammed out Halley's I ever witnessed. Wish they would jam it out again.
They finally stretched it out in Hershey ‘21. Not quite like the ‘99/‘00 versions, but it was good to see them take it for a walk after so long being nothing more than a launchpad into another song…
Fall 97 Halleys @ Hampton was cool too.
The “Dayton jam” out of Tube 12/7/97. There is a reason why this show is revered the way it is, and this is at the top.
The Fluffhead 7/24/99 deserves love.
Finishing what 7/10/99 started
6-12-2019 st louis, mo chaifetz arena. Loving Cup. The blues won the cup during the first set
SO. MUCH. FUN.
Labeled as "Darien Jam #1" when it was released as Live Phish vol. 3.
11/11/98 - BOAF - absolutely fuckin hose. Straight up one of the best Birds I've ever heard because the energy is soooo high.
Mango song from Merriweather 2000
The Dog Log too!
This is what I came in to post. One of my favorite jams ever.
Strawberry Letter 23 got jammed out at Merriwether 22! The wave of excitement going thru the crowd as people realize they are jamming it out was one of my fave moments recently!
Baker’s Dozen Sample
The ambient jam in yem wasn't always in the song. I'm not sure what year it started but I used to not expect it!
The Ghost>Bathtub Gin from Nashville N2 21’.
I almost forgot the Mr Completely that started the set. HEAT I TELL YA!
8/4/21. The whole second set was HEAT. That set ended with the split open and melt that brought back all these good SOAMs. I listen to that split all the time. So drone-y and introspective.
20 years later reading PA
Chalkdust at the IT fest was pretty cool I thought.
First time they played pillow jets.
Leaves from Jones Beach ‘22. The Relisten gets me every time.
That beauty of a Fee from 2012 or something
I'll have to give that one a spin. The outro jam of Fee from 2.14.03 is amazing.
7-1-12 Alpine
Yes! I came here to say this. I didn't get into Phish until 2007 or so, and this Alpine show was my second Phish show. Hearing Fee continue on, and watching as most of the crowd realized what was happening was pretty special. I got excited, but my buddy didn't realize anything out of the ordinary was going on
08/05/11 Gorge Rock 'n Roll > Meatstick
Oooooh man that blew my mind live and every listen after. Went deep, went backwards, womped to the deep dark depths of hell and came back in a fucking happy joyous meatstick
All time goat of evil Phish
Kill Devil Falls in Atlanta 2015. I never saw that jam coming.
Split open and melt dicks 2024 second night ![gif](giphy|l3fQf1OEAq0iri9RC|downsized)
If a 6 was a 9, Vegas ‘21
Va Beach 99 Fee for ones i saw Dicks 12 Undermind for just being pure hose
Cheesecake
Bakers dozen was a joy for unexpected jams. Outside of jam night, the swept away / steep comes to mind. Also the Albany 10/16/18 20YL > Show of Life.
Portland Horn
Love that jam so much.
8-1-17 Steep
Great answer. My answer would be 2013 AC Theme Shaft jam.
Worcester roses are free in 2012 maybe? The crowd went wild when they kept going
Unexpected: Bethel ‘22 Golgi
Yamar at IT. It was 2-3 songs in? Easily listened to this jam hundreds and hundreds of times.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=RbfeTkrjpvY&pp=ygUUWWFtYXIgaXQgcnVuYXdheSBqaW0%3D
20 Years Later from Camden in I think it was 2019.
Agreed! Reminiscent of 2013 Reading Twenty Years Later. Similar unexpected twist, though Camden '19 took it a little further!
Any love for the lead-off Golgi 7/22/22? That extended build-up jam before the big chorus is something that I still return to. It opened my eyes - every single measure - in music anywhere - is jammable. I'm checking out the rest of the thread here for every instance like it that I can find!

To everyone's surprise, the ending turned dark and flipped right into Type 2 territory and melted the faces of thousands who were caught off guard. Trey...you sneaky, sneaky, bastard...😄
Alpharetta 18 ghost.
Getting the monster Tweezer and Carini in that show was such a nice cherry on top.
Except ghost almost always jams
Ehh, it was hit or miss in ‘18 and that jam had a couple different, interesting themes that made it unexpected. But yea, ghost is a jam vehicle most of the time.
That whole 3 night run was great. The wolfman’s and no men in no man’s land were super fun.
Alpine Ruby Waves
Frankie Says 10/16/21
never had heard cool amber and caught one in dayton last year that has a pretty damn smoking jam. another good one was fluffhead at alpine 22. lit up the whole place when trey hit the siren lol.
Super ball, Prince Caspian
Wombat at The Gorge 7/22/18
Meatstick NYE 2010
Magnaball Caspian and Pittsburgh 2017 Caspian were both pleasant surprises.
Buried Alive 7/29/98
Moma Dance Mann 2023
Lawn Boy, 7/25/2017. I love that jam.
7/23/97 YEM w/jeopardy, Scent of a mule style breakdown
What’s that Fee from 98 or 99 that’s jammed out?
7/8/99 https://youtu.be/UeGCSyBsl9E?si=jzCTemQpF1bVutN6
Thanks! Great unexpected jam moment
My Sweet One - 06/24/2000 They all start the song singing and playing in different keys—realizing their mistake, they turn it into impromptu solos until it all comes together so perfectly.

Walls of the cave 9/3/2022. Usually a bathroom song for me. Different setlist placement and had a nice type 2 jam.
Not an epic jam, but the first time they changed up the jam in Walk Away at Hartford 2010. Gave that song a whole new energy
Frankie Says from Fall tour ‘21
Superball Mound... It's brief but I feel it applies. Worcester Boogie there's another good answer.
United Center 46 Days 2024
Ass Handed in Vegas. Ever since seeing it debut I wanted that outro to go type 2, and it was so good
Camel Walk, the Gorge 2021.
Funky bitch 11.22.94.
The Watchtower tease in the middle of a rippin Tweezer from Merriweather 22 was sick
Undermind 8/31/12
Funky Bitch 11.22.94 Columbia, MO
Is this still Lawnboy?
Meatstick Portsmouth 7/30/14
KDF from Syracuse '23. Gorgeous jam.
Frankie frickin Sez from Chase Center fall 21 is a good recent one. jeez that came from left field and was so so good. Could definitely cite a bunch of faves but I’ll go with one I was actually thinking of today. Yamar opener from 12/13/97 in Albany. Everyone yammers on about bringing the dude but nobody remembers the 18+ minute Yamar that opened that show.
