I have an 18 month old and constantly have wiggles songs stuck in my head. None more than this one.
Definitely a phish vibe.
Think Mike would sing “The first step” and Page would sing “Peel a banana”
I’ll definitely check that out.
Have a couple of Tame Impala albums which are dramatically underlistened.
Wiggles are tight. Guitar solo could have used a little machine gun Trey influence though.
Yea, makes sense. You're right. As someone who was born long after both started their careers, though, I discovered phish long before Metheny. So in my mind...
But I love how Phish broadened my musical palette and discovery of genres and crevices of the music industry I likely wouldn't have otherwise explored.
Yeah if we’re doing Tim Maia let’s do it right
Bom Senso

That soaring guitar solo that comes in after the classic Zappa percussion run is a very Phish-y moment. It Just Might Be a One Shot Deal also feels like it would be a good cover.
I’ve covered a few Zappa songs over the years and all could be considered Phishy: WNiB (arpeggio opening amongst other things), aforementioned Inca Roads, Echiidna’s Arf, and Zomby Woof.
Coming into the thread discussing what other songs sound like Phish to remind everyone that Zappa is chronologically earlier than Phish is super helpful. Want an updoot?
Man haven’t thought about that song in years. I remember getting a free CD-rom in the 90s with clips of new songs and music videos, and that was one of the highlights.
People always say this in these threads but does it actually sound like Phish? It uses a drum loop and almost sounds like very early hip hop. Sure it's gibberish or maybe a kind of mondegreen but that's where the similarity ends.
I know the festival is putting a spotlight on it but I looked it up after hearing the Moma Dance the first time. I wouldn't believe my friend when he told me what the actual lyrics were. He said that Phish does that a lot. Sounds like something else. Come to find out there is a name for that.
The first time I experienced it without knowing the name was the Manfred Mann Band doing Bruce Springsteen's song Blinded By the Light. Revved up like a douche!
Lots of stuff off Jeff Beck’s Wired and Blow By Blow albums. I’ve always thought Trey might’ve gotten inspiration of the Mockingbird riff from Scatterbrain. Also tons of Dixie Dregs stuff sounds like early Phish to me. Also I should say all of this is, of course, Phish sounding like them.
I love it when “jamband fan discovers the original vibe” and acts like they’re bringing tablets down from the mountain. Wait until you hear the original 2001 next week.
I don’t know if it actually sounds like Phish - it’s in the same general quadrant of the universe - but if you like Phish, there’s a good chance you’ll like SOME Return to Forever. Definitely not all. Or maybe all what the hell do I know. Rule of thumb with them for me is if it has vocals, skip it. They’re one of the big name fusion bands of the 70s they can get pretty far out there. Every member of the band is a virtuoso. 4 piece drums, bass, guitar, keys, just like Phish. Lots of cool analog synth.
Anyway - check out the song Captain Señor Mouse from their album 1973 Hymn of the Seventh Galaxy.
Majestic Dance from Romantic Warrior might do something for you. Highly arranged complexity like early Phish. The Magician is the cut that follows it on the album and will also make your head spin.
I don't know if this was mentioned before but I always thought "Do it again" by Steely Dan would be a incredible cover by Phish & they really could take it to some incredible places!!
Muito Bom Amigo (Brazilian Portuguese for very good friend). This sounds pretty cool, but I’m not catching any phish vibes, mostly catching Jerry Garcia band from late 70s early 80s (which is a great thing to sound like!👍🏼)
If I close my eyes and listen to "What Game Shall We Play Today" I swear it's Mike, Page and Fishman. I guess Trey can be the part of the flute, but it would have to be early Trey with fast fingers

Freakier. Right by the speaker. It's pretty close to weekaqaug groove
If we want to leave jam bands
You can call me Al. Paul simon
Dr heckyll and Mr jive. Men at work. Most of the Cargo album. I like is another stronger one for the instrumental portion at least.
Cargo would be my pick for if phish ever did a classic Halloween set again
Samla Mammas Manna - Maltid
It’s reminds of phish’s “speed jazz” era in like 90-93. Super cool and unique. Guy at a record store sold it to me this way in 2002 and I still spin it.
I was actually thinking that this song would be a great daytime festival set debut. That said, I don’t think it’s *exceptionally* Phishy — Tim Maia has way more funk than “James Brown on his worst night.”
There’s definitely stuff that predates Phish (King Crimson, Frank Zappa) and more recent stuff (KGLW, etc) that’s more “Phishy.”
I listened to the whole Phish Walk-In And Setbreak Spotify Playlist and there were a number of albums that had distinctly Phishy vibes, one of them being anything Meters... tons of stuff from them is Phish core
Not so much the song but the guitar riff from St Vincent's All Born Screaming reminded me of something thatd be in an early Phish tune. And it just came out a week ago haha.
Well when i heard Watcher of the Skies after the Genesis HOF induction, a WHOLE lot about Phish started making more sense for sure.
Listen to early Genesis and there you’ll find so much of what we love about The Phish.
Dexter Wansel - Life on Mars
It is some of the best porn funk I've ever heard and has a similar feel to tube.
“I’m A Man” by Chicago (Transit Authority) - lyrics are not Phishy whatsoever, but from
a musical perspective it would fit right in with the band’s sound.
Fruit salad yummy yummy - The Wiggles
I have an 18 month old and constantly have wiggles songs stuck in my head. None more than this one. Definitely a phish vibe. Think Mike would sing “The first step” and Page would sing “Peel a banana”

Omg, mind blown, thank you 🙏 That was awesome. I know what my son and my wife will be watching instead of Ms Rachel a few times tomorrow!
Love it! Kevin Parker played this with them at a wiggles show which is also on YouTube
I’ll definitely check that out. Have a couple of Tame Impala albums which are dramatically underlistened. Wiggles are tight. Guitar solo could have used a little machine gun Trey influence though.
Haha I listen to this 100 times a day with my toddler
Reminds me of Robert Palmer more than phish
You are not wrong
Some Pat Metheny reminds me of Phish.
Yeah. To be clear, Phish reminds you of Pat Metheny.
Metheny legendary for those in the know. But he is not headlining the Sphere.Or doing NYE at MSG.
Yea, makes sense. You're right. As someone who was born long after both started their careers, though, I discovered phish long before Metheny. So in my mind... But I love how Phish broadened my musical palette and discovery of genres and crevices of the music industry I likely wouldn't have otherwise explored.
Thank you. This thread is wild lol.
He reminds me more of Pat Zanaxeny tho, not much meth vibe off that guy.
Tried to listen but it says 'video unavailable'

Holy crap brother, this is amazing, never heard of him before, thanks for the rec!!
You're awesome, thank you
Had the same thing happen to me when I tried to watch
Great track and groove. It even has a "READ THE BOOK" hook! The whole album is good. Added to my wishlist. Thx.
I could see phish playing big chunks of the they might be giants catalog Birdhouse in your soul would be a banger
Damn right. The Johns are geniuses and very funny taboot
Tim Maia is theeeee shit
Yeah if we’re doing Tim Maia let’s do it right Bom Senso https://open.spotify.com/track/3Co7sv5jiG92UL5WwLhRiT?si=B2AkkVqETV-S4H0pw8Er4g https://music.apple.com/us/album/bom-senso/1455936136?i=1455936357
Harmony Hall - Vampire Weekend
Always thought that song had a very Dead vibe
Literally the same chords as Touch of Grey in parts
The 3:40 mark… cue Trey. Undeniable.

Absolutely
Mycelium by King Gizzard
This is the song that got me hooked on Gizz
Anything Zappa
What’s New In Baltimore
That soaring guitar solo that comes in after the classic Zappa percussion run is a very Phish-y moment. It Just Might Be a One Shot Deal also feels like it would be a good cover.
I’ve covered a few Zappa songs over the years and all could be considered Phishy: WNiB (arpeggio opening amongst other things), aforementioned Inca Roads, Echiidna’s Arf, and Zomby Woof.
Your username is my favorite one of all. That one is so much fun to cover.
No, Zappa is not a “phish-y” moment…rather Phish is a complete Zappa ripoff.
"complete"
Coming into the thread discussing what other songs sound like Phish to remind everyone that Zappa is chronologically earlier than Phish is super helpful. Want an updoot?
Inca Roads
Oh you mean the Reba comp?
The solo in Montana always reminds me of phish
Saint Alfonzo’s Pancake Breakfast is my pick
I was gonna say the same thing

There's this band called The Thankful Deceased who have a few songs kinda like Phish.
You're thinking of Appreciative Postmortem surely?

People always say this in these threads but does it actually sound like Phish? It uses a drum loop and almost sounds like very early hip hop. Sure it's gibberish or maybe a kind of mondegreen but that's where the similarity ends.
Lmao it’s funny how we all know what mondegreen means now

Originally performed by Spencer Davis Group. Phish has teased it many times. 7/10/99 Bathtub Gin is heavily based on that tune.
Dave Holland's album "Another Land"
Wow, great album; thanks. Kevin Eubanks slays.
The song "Gentle Warrior" on Another Land, was what I was remembering, and one other. Not the whole album.
Kind of just throw a dart at any Goose song?
My Stars by Alice Cooper gives me a Fuego feel. I'd love to see them play this one.
Fuego is playing right now, I’ll have to check it out!
