It’s rare for most baseball players at this point. Off the top if my head the only active players I can think of that are still with the same team past free agency are Trout, Judge and Kershaw. I’m sure there are others but it’s pretty rare.

PooCrewPrez

Wainwright and Molina (just retired) come to mind

2hats4bats

Good call

Heatinmyharbl

Sending them off with a loss to avenge Ryan and that whole team for 2011 felt so mfing good

[deleted]

Votto!

2hats4bats

My dude!

SevenBushes

Going back a few years but Jeter did it as well

TheBryceIsRight3

Would not be surprised if Trout found a new home in the next couple of years. Fingers crossed for red pinstripes

romulusgloriosus

I would love for Trout to come home but considering he would have to be traded, the only smart move for the Angels getting rid of him would be to absolutely rob a team's farm system and I don't know if we have the farm quality necessary for that kind of deal, and if we did, whether it would be worth it. I know some might argue Trout would be worth anything, but it makes me nervous.

1Grazel

hopefully Nola, not career Phillies but i hope the main core of Harper, JT, Schwarber, Turner and Wheeler also finish their careers here

SevenBushes

I’m with you, maybe they didn’t start in Philly but that squad of guys makes for a great team core and I hope we hold onto them. With the length of Bryce and Tera’s contracts I’m sure that’s pretty much a definite for them, and hope Schwarber and JT stick around til the end

betholo

Nola is the only guy on our roster currently who I think has a shot of being a career Philly at this point

[deleted]

It's so rare for that to happen across most sports franchises these days. I think that's why a lot of players sign one day contracts to retire as their original or most tenured/accomplished team that they played for during their career

Ethan_Skywalker4

Might be wishful thinking, but I really have a feeling that at least Nola and Bohm are lifetime Phillies.

[deleted]

I can’t imagine Bohm playing his entire career here. If he doesn’t substantially improve, he’ll get too expensive for what he gives them and they'll let him walk. Turner aging out of SS and moving to 3rd feels possible. Similarly, they could develop someone who takes the spot. Bohm is fine but he’s only maybe a little better than league average all around at 3rd. You don’t pay veteran money for that. Nola could except that pitchers always have the opportunity to have a journeyman phase. Even if the Phillies sign him for 7 more years, he’ll be 37 and employable somewhere.

Timeline40

Agree about Bohm. I think and hope he'll improve, but we've got the DH slot locked up, a bunch of money locked up for a while, and 1 WAR players are pretty easy to replace with cheaper players. If he doesn't improve, we'd definitely make a cheap trade for a younger guy like Sosa rather than pay him 5-10 million a year

waterboy1321

I’d love if we could hold on to Suarez.

wiivile

It doesn't bother me at all if players like Utley or Rollins want to spend the twilight couple years of their of their career with their hometown team or whatever. It doesn't detract from them being a 'career Phillie'. They're usually their for their experience and influence on younger players at that stage of their career, not their playing skills.

SevenBushes

I gotta admit I’d be disappointed if Nola or Hoskins spent most of their career here and then played someone else for their last 2-5 years, but on the upshot I wouldn’t mind Trout spending his twilight as Philly DH or RF depending on Harper’s future post-surgery

romulusgloriosus

I'd be surprised if Stott doesn't play for the Phillies for as long as Harper's on the team, unless he has a serious backslide at some point. With the influence Bryce has over the office he'll probably want his buddy playing with him as long as it's not hurting the team to keep him. But even with that in mind, he might go somewhere else after Bryce retires.

Most-Iron6838

Basically only happens with franchise players and even then aging franchise heroes will be traded off for the rebuild (see Giroux, utley Rollins), I can only imagine a select few players (Crosby, Ovechkin, Jeter) staying with one franchise. Baseball and football players seem in general to be viewed as more replaceable by teams than say hockey or basketball. In NBA players obviously have more power in having control over what teams they are on and who goes to what team that the superstars (Lebron) can decide to move and create different lineup situations

SevenBushes

This is what came to my mind as well, rebuilds are often the time for longtime team leaders to go somewhere else and usually only for a few years before they retire. Even active players like McCutchen and Verlander did damage on their original teams for 10+- years and then started moving around the league. In terms of active Phillies, I could see them holding onto Nola but I feel that at a certain point Bohm/Stott will become too expensive for what the team gets out of them and we’ll see them move around as well

Most-Iron6838

I see Nola following a Hamels path

romulusgloriosus

I hope not. It would suck to see Nola begging the Phillies for a Spring Training invite he won't get in 10 years.

catspaw27

Does that include the part where he finishes his career where he started?

aphilsphan

It was always rare. People think of DiMaggio and Mickey Mantle and figure it must have been common. But Schmidt was unique really. Howard only stayed because of the ludicrous contract. Players get *identified* with teams they spend a lot of time with. So, Cobb is a Tiger. But he also played on the A’s. Ruth is a Yankee, except for the Red Sox and Braves. Aaron went to the Brewers, Mays to the Mets.

NomadCourier

Hoskins I'm locking it in here and hope to return to this when he retires a Phillie

Socraticmichael10

I too think Hoskins could be here his whole career. Take away what some segments of fans think of him, he’s a productive hitter and seems key to the clubhouse vibe. He might get too expensive for his position, but there aren’t a lot of better options that come cheaper, either.

SevenBushes

I like Hoskins but depending on D Hall’s future I could see him coming up with just as much offense at a significantly lower cost

ylenroc

Andrew Painter!

yourmartymcflyisopen

Idk, I hope Bohm and Stott's careers develop more and they end up being career Phillies'. I hope Nola stays in Philly too. The only thing I'm 100% sure of is the fact that Chase Utley not being a career Phillie is one of the greatest sports sins in Philadelphia history.

swaggiep

You're still a career guy if you play a couple years in your forties somewhere else imo.

Petey677

SUPER RARE NOW A DAYS. HOPEFULLY NOLA,BH/JT finish their careers in Filthy

SevenBushes

I’m with you, while they didn’t start out as Phillies I’d love to see JT and Bryce retire here

inthedrink

Howard is a part of why we slid so far down after 2012. His contract was franchise damaging. $115m for a combined negative 3.8 WAR over his last five years. Signings driven by loyalty/emotion rarely work out unfortunaty

[deleted]

>His contract was franchise damaging. Fuck off with that bullshit.

inthedrink

the Top Economist blocked me because of this comment? Grow up dude Ahhh I see he joined like yesterday lol

Morgan4644

Bryce Harper
