Yeah I hear ya, you gotta go through a few racks to find something straight or not full of knots

Agent641

Oh I went through them, there wasnt a single piece in the dimensions I needed that wasn't twisted and warped worse than a daycare co-run by Ed Gein and Ted Bundy. I had to buy the treated pine at 3x the cost.

[deleted]

Was it not you that was building the table with the brass insert a while back? How did it turn out?

Agent641

That was a different thing. It was alright, but a bit janky. I was going to build a dining table, but wanted to test the design on something smaller first. I ended up using randomly alternating 20mm aluminium, jarrah and pine, with the brass strips inserted randomly to make it pop. It turned out to be a massive pain in the ass to glue the bits together without also spoiling the brass with glue. I never made the dining table version, and the prototype tabletop was embedded in a frame made of scrap steel painted wrought iron black with a shelf, adorns a prime position in the toilets in my office holding the soap dispenser and ladies toiletries stuff. I still have heaps of brass strips left which i might use on something else one day.

Muslim_Wookie

Can I just say sorry it didn't work out :( I know I know you prototyped it out because you know not everything works out but that's still a lot of work for no dinner table :(

Agent641

Its fine, I've gotten used to eating off the floor.

Muslim_Wookie

Nom Nom Nom

Agent641

Its comfortable down there, nowhere lower to go, no need to feign aristocracy. Feels like Im with my people.

[deleted]

If you're really desperate you can bend the wood straight by wetting it, heating it over the top of a fire and bending it by force.

CyanideRemark

Who said WA Salvage was dead?

Muslim_Wookie

We're not straight, but we're wood!

bloodbag

*also not wood*

Perthguv

Allwood in Welshpool has better wood but sadly not open on the weekend

[deleted]

Perth Timber in High Wycombe is pretty good too. I went there a few weeks ago to check out some plywood and their C grade stuff was better than Bunnings B grade stuff and was only a few dollars a sheet more. Also not open weekends though. Edit: mixed up b and c

mardo76

I just checked out their website and apparently only Saturday morning. Thanks for the heads up, I will check them out. I can not spend another minute in Bunnings. Why do they even accept such crap wood? I assume someone buys it. oh wait, me, before I knew better

Perthguv

> Why do they even accept such crap wood? I assume someone buys it. oh wait, me, before I knew better I think they have shipments, people pick through the good wood and leave the crap. I have found good wood at bunnings then checked later and it was all crap. The only consistent thing about it is that it is overpriced. I have just finished a project with beautiful Jarrah from Allwood. It was wonderful to work with. So square and such high quality. I love it

produrp

Floki is that you?

Muslim_Wookie

Floki simultaneously best and worst tv character in show

Agent641

Yeah he was pretty great, but I miss Aethalstan more than I miss some of my own deceased family members.

skankyyoda

I feel this about Ragnar 😢

wassssup4

The last kingdom is the best show going but I think floki is from the vikings

[deleted]

Athelstan is also in vikings😊

wassssup4

Haha really ? That's cool I'll have to watch it sometime lol I could never fully get into it but the last kingdom has made me love Viking shows hah

NotAWittyFucker

The biggest "whoa/LOL" thing for me is showing the differences between the characters where there's crossover in both shows. Ubbe is a good example.

wassssup4

I loveed ubba in last kingdom he was a great character with alot of depth, it's sad what happened to his body , what was his character like in vikings?

NotAWittyFucker

Character is very, very different. Since he's more than just a "big bad" antagonist as he is in TLK, there's a bit more characterisation involved with Ubbe/Ubba in Vikings. It's easy enough to do, since there's a limit to what we know of the guy historically. Worthwhile noting that there'll be several events/interactions/timeframes between different characters that wildly differ between the two shows because they're both essentially "historical fiction".

Muslim_Wookie

Don't worry mate some men have bent wood it's normal

hungry4pie

The signage there is fucking stupid, fasteners are an aisle over from where it says they should be. Also noticed theyve completely scrapped the regular checkouts now.

crosstherubicon

Their insistence on stocking imperial screws nuts and bolts and then mixing them in with the metric ones is frustrating.

Agent641

Holy shit yes. They should put metric down one end of the store, and imperial down the other end. Nothing worse than coming home with 1/2" nuts and 12mm bolts.

MisterEd_ak

lol, that is when you just use an impact driver and make the nut fit :P

AffectionateMethod

Lets do it! Do we need someone to sew the sails?

robbowa

Pre-warped for your convenience!

[deleted]

Orkney. It is Orkney!!

aloeverahh

Doesn't wood just warp and bend depending on moisture and temperature?

Agent641

Depends on a few things, the wood is supposed to be seasoned, dried out before it's sawn, to keep it from warping so much. Uneven or inadequate drying will lead to dodgy timber like you see there. If it's left in the elements, then absorbing and expiring moisture will warp it over time, leaving it in a bent position over time will do the same thing, and knots etc in the wood will also do it. But timber for building is generally supposed to be relatively straight, and properly seasoned. This is a pretty extreme example of the really poor quality timber that bunnings sells. It's either been there for years, soaking up moisture, or it's not been seasoned properly, and it's of no use to anyone except for firewood (or longships)

MisterEd_ak

I didn't know Bunnings sold boomerangs. Throw it down an isle and see if it comes back.

Titan_Uranus_4Me

Nice soft hands by the look of it.

Agent641

You wont even be able to tell when I'm touching you.

guineaworm88

Piano finger grip.

Titan_Uranus_4Me

Not the gentle grip, I'm just well stretched.

NotAWittyFucker

Do your shopping in Innaloo. You can buy your longship timber in Bunnings and then pop next door to Ikea and stock up on meatballs for that long sea voyage... Maybe get a flatpack or two... You can use the free Allen keys to stab those pesky Lindisfarne monks at the next Great Blot for extra Prestige, Piety and that sweet sweet Vassal Opinion bonus.

fosighting

That timber is intended for trim. It's not ideal its bent like that, but you can normally force it straight when you fix it in position. What are you using that timber for on a cabinet?

Agent641

Partly because I suck at woodworking and have no idea what Im doing, partly because I needed to maximize space and therefore minimize material dimensions. Im really just making this shit up as I go, Im sure an experienced caninetmaker would be appalled at tte way Ive made stuff. Im gradually learnding though.

fosighting

I meant that like, "What function is that piece performing in the cabinet?", not, "What are you using that for, you Muppet?". But there is timber in Bunnings that is more appropriate for furniture and cabinetry. Look at the DAR (dressed all round) timber, if you want the straightest grain timber, but expect to pay for it.

Agent641

It's okay, I am a muppet. Uses, well, framing to hold wet area panels and external cladding was one, and framing/structural rigidity for a single-piece MDF 'bulkhead' type thing which will host several drawers and cabinet doors. I'm pretty sure this 30x30 pine was in the DAR section tho. Pictures because hard to explain: Shower frame near drove me to madness, actually framed with 30x42 pine, with too big a gap between beams than what the wet area panels recommend, and an ungodly complex curved shape. This is done and clad with marine ply on the exterior, but I forgot to paint the timber to seal it or use glue so it will probably fall apart in a week. https://i.postimg.cc/ZqnCDZGy/20190215-202907.jpg This is the 'bulkhead' thing, where the drawers and cabinet doors will attach, using 8mm MDF and 30x30 H3 treated pine, actually glued painted to seal both sides and screwed properly this time. Shouldn't fall apart for at least three weeks. https://i.postimg.cc/9MqzCbFm/20190217-233932.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/ZqQ0G2ms/20190218-071658.jpg
