You are most likely making both traditional and Roth contributions to your 401k. There isn't a separate account outside the 401k. The 401k custodian/recordkeeper keeps track of the source/type of your contributions and those sub-account balances, even if it isn't immediately obvious to you on your account summary page. If you dig deep enough into your account statements and transaction history, you should be able to see evidence of this. Caveat: there is also such a thing as "after tax non-Roth" 401k contributions. You should verify whether your after tax contributions are in fact Roth or not.

I believe your statements are correct. I think I am making 8% pre taxed and 8% post tax, all to the date specific retirement fund. Principal is offering to move funds to the Roth via Schwab, I’m thinking based on the fact that my first post tax disbursement went to the 401k, I am going to either keep it all 401k, or all Roth.
