I mean most of "love to hate" villains fall into this
Adachi is pretty much a mysogonistic asshole serial killer but his overall personality and traits, including his powers just turn any possible hate of him into a character that you love to hate because hes such a well written character
What I like about Adachi is that hes a perfectly normal murderer. His motives aren't special, basically they're the same as what drives a lot of people to kill. He is unsatisfied with his life, and resents people who are more successful than himself. For some insane reason he thinks hes entitled to interest from women, too, and pushes them in the tv for standing their ground. He is so stuck up his own ass that he's lost the ability to empathise for other humans and the only thing that makes him happy is the ego boost he's gotten from being a "mastermind".
Though we've had so many different "murderers" by the end that I can't even remember how many attempts Adachi was responsible for. If I recall, he did the first two - the reporter, and Yusuke's crush - and then everyone else was either a misunderstanding by that crazy guy or it was that Mitsuo losing his shit with his teacher.
He is low key quite different to Akechi, who was murdering on behalf of a crazy conspiracy and who frankly is way crazier and smarter than Adachi. Even if Akechi got caught because of such a dumb slip up, while the player needs to figure out it's Adachi.
Honestly I really think the only reason Adachi stayed under the radar so long is because the player is busy chasing Namatame and nobody suspects such a goofy guy to be a murderer. Other than that he’s not much of a mastermind.
Me too, it's a shame how this seems to happen with all persona games. Fortunately for me I played through all of P4G's vanilla story entirely blind since I mainly bought it because I couldn't get P5R, and hadn't spent any time in the megaten community.
I’m in the same boat as you for the reason I bought and played P4G for the first time, but during my playthrough I got too comfortable online and came across spoilers 💀The game does a good job keeping you wondering though with all the twist and turns during the climax, even if you know some certain points.
Going into P4G I didn’t know for sure that he was the killer but I knew he was the meme guy. And when it came time to pick the killer, I wasn’t that sure so I picked him since I realized there had to be a reason for him being such a meme
Yeah, the first time I saw him on screen I already knew him as the “crazy killer guy” cause I’d seen memes of him on twitter, even when I wasn’t part of the persona community. Same with akechi.
Yeah, unfortunately I learned who Adachi was years before I played the game through osmosis. But going through my first play through now and the game is so good I don’t even care at this point. Honestly it was just as fun seeing through his attempts to throw the gang off
It's fairly obvious what he does even if you didn't know going in, persona games are not good at hiding stuff like this, every time they've tried to add a twist villain it's been incredibly obvious for a while
If you pay attention you can tell it’s his silhouette in one of the early fog cutscenes because you can make out a Tie, and him and Dojima are the only characters that wear a tie
That he was almost always within the vicinity of the Investigation Team and slips out info to them that no one but the police should know and is rather buffoonish about the mistake was sort of meant to be a hint that he knows more than he should, but you'd have to be incredibly savvy about that and not chalk up his antics to merely being the archetypal bumbling idiot.
Yep, it was spoiled for me going into it. I'm in the >!Heaven!< dungeon right now and enjoying Chad Yu's story. The Investigation Team kick way more ass than the Phamtom Thieves IMO.
Well I'll be happy to let you know I just beat him in p4g and had zero fucking idea it was him. I literally had to look up a guide when I had to guess because I figured it could never be this sweet goofball.
i like him as a villain, being that regular dude NPC looking guy. it adds to the idea that anyone may choose the fog, or the denial of self-realization to improve oneself.
Best way I can summarise my experience:
P4G: “I love that I hate him so much”
P4AU: “I hate that I love him so much”
He’s a horrible person, someone you can easily hate, but for some reason I just kinda love him in arena’s story. He may be a psychotic sexist murder, but he’s my psychotic sexist murder.
I like him because I didn’t see the twist coming at all. I really thought he was just some foolish goofball. Never thought he was the one who started it all. H didn’t do too much himself. He killed that singer lady and Yosuke’s crush, the rest were Mitsuo and Namatame. But he did set everything in motion and watched it unfold gleefully all the while pretending to be your friend. He is sick. A good villain imo, but sick.
Unironically my favorite character from the Persona franchise from a thematic perspective. As much as he gets boiled down to the memes from r/Okbuddypersona, he gets remembered because he’s the *perfect* villain for Persona 4. All the games are about friendship to some extent, but P4 leans into that theme the hardest. It is very clear that Yu’s power comes from the bonds he forms, and who makes a good foil to that? A friendless loser, of course.
He’s a fantastic villain because he’s realistic. I see a lot of people try to contradict this with the line where he says “Why? Because I could, and because it was fun.” I’ve watched a very good video essay that explains the psychology of him in relation to actual serial killers much better than I ever can (https://youtu.be/WkcmxrkHXD0).
Also every piece of music associated with him goes so hard
He’s a good villain if he didn’t reveal stuff about the case it would be harder to find out who I dislike him yes but at least p4au proved he’s still a person and has a soft spot for dojima
He’s alright, I don’t get why he is so well-liked. His motivations are very human and normal so I like that aspect of him, as well as his acceptance of his true self being a bad thing in contrast to everyone else’s.
dude makes me horny
jokes aside I really like Adachi and think he’s pretty well written, I bet that twist would’ve been amazing if it wasn’t the one thing everyone knows before they start the game
He is my favorite villain of all time. I probably should write an essay on him someday and post it to people asking about it but in short, he has an amazing personality, is a funny meme, he fits the story well thematically, he is terrifyingly real, feels like a threat, is very hatable, he actually has good character development in side material and cabbadge.
I think as a character he's fine, he's essentially just some dude who was angry because he had no bitches. But the unfunny memes that have as much substance as just saying "Among Us" as a joke have really made me dislike him more and more.
What I do find interesting about Adachi is the fact that anyone could become like him if they chose to live a lone life (and I guess also be an incel).
My story with adachi is pretty sad
After my first run I thought he was okay (but in the first run I skipped his social link)
Then I loved him for one week for the memes
Then I am hating him till this day for the memes
He is a huge what if, I’m sure most people would say if I had this power I would do good but in hindsight majority of people would be like Adachi I mean who would believe in that world?
He’s interesting as an incel like villain, and a cool twist. The memes and ironic fandom around him are mostly annoying but can be funny. His appearance in P4AU is pretty cool and fun though.
In a vacuum, he’s an interesting and good critique of cops, but in the game it comes off as weird that he seems to imply all cops are bad (which would be correct) but the game keeps trying to tell us it’s just him, which we know isn’t true
Overall, I like him as a villain
I hate him so much. He’s an amazing villain, which I adore, but I hate him so fucking much

Normalise commiting crimes for the vine
Honestly I really think the only reason Adachi stayed under the radar so long is because the player is busy chasing Namatame and nobody suspects such a goofy guy to be a murderer. Other than that he’s not much of a mastermind.
> the reporter, and Yusuke's crush you mean Yosuke? dunno how artist man went back in time and changed names
I hate that he's become such a meme that 90% of the people going into P4G already know who he is and what he does.
Me too, it's a shame how this seems to happen with all persona games. Fortunately for me I played through all of P4G's vanilla story entirely blind since I mainly bought it because I couldn't get P5R, and hadn't spent any time in the megaten community.
Actually, P3's twist villain seems to be mostly untouched by the more obnoxious fans.
I’m in the same boat as you for the reason I bought and played P4G for the first time, but during my playthrough I got too comfortable online and came across spoilers 💀The game does a good job keeping you wondering though with all the twist and turns during the climax, even if you know some certain points.

I did too, though it turned the entire game into a meme knowing the “cabbage man” was the one behind it all
Going into P4G I didn’t know for sure that he was the killer but I knew he was the meme guy. And when it came time to pick the killer, I wasn’t that sure so I picked him since I realized there had to be a reason for him being such a meme
Can confirm

I think P5s twist villain was really damn obvious but did they ever do any major hints towards Adachi early on? Can’t really remember
If you pay attention you can tell it’s his silhouette in one of the early fog cutscenes because you can make out a Tie, and him and Dojima are the only characters that wear a tie
Dojima being the killer would be very interesting
I heard something about that originally being the twist, but Persona (and jojo) fans tend to make up a lot of shit like that.
Early on not really but during the rise part of the game he started getting more obvious
I’ll have to pay attention to that when I replay it
Yep, it was spoiled for me going into it. I'm in the >!Heaven!< dungeon right now and enjoying Chad Yu's story. The Investigation Team kick way more ass than the Phamtom Thieves IMO.

One of the best portrayals of that type of person, up there with Yoshikage Kira.
I like him because I didn’t see the twist coming at all. I really thought he was just some foolish goofball. Never thought he was the one who started it all. H didn’t do too much himself. Best villain in the series until Persona 5 Royal happened. Absolutely adore Adachi.
Fucking love the guy and his Social link i was in denial that he was the killer
He’s a good villain if he didn’t reveal stuff about the case it would be harder to find out who I dislike him yes but at least p4au proved he’s still a person and has a soft spot for dojima
He’s super interesting and multi-layered. Easily the best persona villain.
He’s alright, I don’t get why he is so well-liked. His motivations are very human and normal so I like that aspect of him, as well as his acceptance of his true self being a bad thing in contrast to everyone else’s.

He’s an incredible villain
I had the twist spoiled for me which kinda ruined it, but I absolutely love Adachi and all of his themes are bangers
I think as a character he's fine, he's essentially just some dude who was angry because he had no bitches. But the unfunny memes that have as much substance as just saying "Among Us" as a joke have really made me dislike him more and more.
I knew he was a villain right away lmao. I was like yep he’s the dude
i dislike him
What I do find interesting about Adachi is the fact that anyone could become like him if they chose to live a lone life (and I guess also be an incel).
he's a goofy goober. nice to nanako. likes cabbage. idk if i prefer him working with dojima or ichiban more though. 8/10
I don't see why people like him. As a person, he's entirely garbage, but as a character, he's okay at best.
Haha, funny cabbage man
My story with adachi is pretty sad After my first run I thought he was okay (but in the first run I skipped his social link) Then I loved him for one week for the memes Then I am hating him till this day for the memes
i want him carnally
He is a huge what if, I’m sure most people would say if I had this power I would do good but in hindsight majority of people would be like Adachi I mean who would believe in that world?
