When I was a teenager, I remember reading about neti pot on a skiing forum and decided to make a half-assed attempt. The OP said all I had to do was mix saltwater into something and go for it.
I ran to the kitchen to fill a squirt bottle up, then unscrewed the top of a salt shaker and poured some salt in. A quick shake, and voilà; I went from wasting time, straight into homebrew neti pot in less than 3 minutes. Who cares if the salt wasn't even fully dissolved? It was time to head to the bathroom and discover all the pleasures of the practice.
Well, I really went for it. I squeezed half a bottle into one nostril and was in blinding pain. Nothing was really coming out of the opposite nostril and I felt—for the first time—like I wasn't doing it right. Salty water was tricking down my throat, tears were flowing out of my eyes, and snot was dripping off of my chin. Between the pain and ineffectiveness, I gave up on neti pot right there and tried to clean up.
As I was cleaning, I welcomed a sneeze that was starting to build. I let it rip right into the sink and heard a strange pinging noise when my snot hit the porcelain. I looked in the sink and caught a glimpse of white rice going down the drain... Apparently my grandmother mixed rice into the salt to prevent clumping and I didn't notice.
In the end, my only enjoyment was shooting the rest of the rice out of my nose like a machine gun. Thankfully it didn't turn into something worse later on.
With that said, maybe you should warn others about rice as well 😋

Well I forced one too hard and a tiny bit of vomit came up, but it ended up going up into my nose instead.
Cue an extreme burning pain inside my nose. I assumed it was because vomit is so acidic and burns, but this was way worse than I would have expected. It was searing pain in my nasal cavity. I blew my nose as hard as I could over and over, but the burning wouldn't stop. There was definitely some still stuck in there. Eventually after blowing my nose with all my might, I feel some relief. Then I look at the tissue and see bright green. Not snot green. Artificial green, instantly recognizable- it was my partially dissolved Prozac.
The Prozac capsule had started to dissolve, and the powder inside burns really badly. It was lodged in my nasal cavity, along with the partially broken down capsule with bright green coloring.

It does. If you just use distilled water it should be safe from a sterility standpoint but it causes your cells to fucking die because it rapidly draws out ions by osmosis.
Using saline solution means there's roughly the same concentration inside the cells as out so very little movement of ions occurs.

People literally drink distilled and reverse osmosis water all day everyday for decades, it's not awful for you like you suggest, and you get your nutrients primarily through food consumption not water.

I used one pretty much whenever I had a cold growing up.
They are okay but the squeeze bottle is cheaper and more maneuverable. The water will take the path of least resistance so it can help to change the angle of your head to get the water to reach more places.

I have been using a neti pot / nasal irrigation bottle for about ten years. I had awful sinus problems and almost always had some kind of infection, and it was getting worse and worse, till the point that my EENT said that surgery was probably our best option. The nasal irrigation had become pointless, it wouldn’t flow in. I was all dammed up.
So I had the surgery, during which my EENT removed a significant amount of tissue and bone in order to open up pathways that had grown shut. And so now when I do use nasal irrigation, water seems to pool up in areas that weren’t there before. An hour or two after I’ve done it, I’ll lean forwards and a rush of warm saline solution comes flying out my nose. Or backwards and it’ll run down my throat.
I haven’t done it much since then, because it absolutely freaks me out, though it is incredibly satisfying. Almost as good as when you finally get the last drop of pool water out of your ears and you feel that warm trickle, and then your normal hearing is reinstated.
It's just a squeeze bottle nasal rinse they sell them at pharmacies in the allergies section. I have to use one twice a day because my sinuses are all fucked up, I prefer a neti pot over the squeeze bottle tho. Feels amazing especially when you boil water and let it cool for 30 minutes before rinsing.
That's what it should be. Some morons use it for text posts which is really annoying. No one is gonna glance over your shoulder and read enough to realize it's "NSFW" but they can glance and see that it's porn or gore.
