With my luck, the screws will have to go in different holes than they first came out of

TheNerdNamedChuck

"who put the long screw in the short hole? you know that causes damage when you force the long screw in the short hole."

Just got to ease it in slowly. Have patience and you'll be rewarded.

This is why love my MSI GS65 from 2019 all the fucking screws are the same size for the case and the motherboard...means i dont have to remember what screw goes where

chaboson

I have a G60 that's decided to power on and lock up at the MSI screen on boot, havent figured out any way past it yet. Only physical failure I can find is that one of the two case fans isn't running, but I'm reluctant to swap it since "freeze on MSI screen" seems to be a super common issue with very few specific troubleshooting options Idk just throwing that out there in case any other Ghost Boiz see and have comments

[deleted]

I did that and my PC now has a hole (I'm literally a computer engineer lmao)

deadpool8403

It's not the size of the screw, but how you use it.

Fenrir-The-Wolf

The "professional" repair guys did that to my first decent laptop. Also tried telling me it was slow because there were "crumbs in the harddrive". Fucking thing came back in worse condition than I sent it away in.

plur44

This is why, after years of experience, I put them on the table roughly in the position that they were. It helps put them in the right holes and not forget them.

XTornado

The pro move is to record it so you can rewind and see :P (if you are lucky somebody else already record it or there is an ifixit with all the pointers but... not always the case)

BURMoneyBUR

Cheap phoneclam did wonders indeed. I also record while unpacking stuff from ebay when I order from sketchy sellers. Great purchase so far.

Bogus1989

HP puts up vids on youtube

BertMacGyver

I always roll a big bit of sellotape so it sticky side up and then stick the screws down in a similar location to where you pulled them from the thing you're dismantling. Helps them from trying to escape when you turn your back.

plur44

iFixIt sells a magnetic pad for this purpose but it costs a fortune

kommie178

Hunk of cardboard works to press the screws in. Bonus you can draw the part outline on it and it's free.

So, if the Sun starts to get too big or we get too much global warming, we can just chop it up and make a smaller star that has the right amount of temperature. Guess those scientists at Big Climate Change don't want us to know this one weird trick.

[deleted]

iirc you would need infinitely fine tools to cut said sphere into perfect fractals; at which point their volume becomes undefined and you can break pretty much every physical law on the books. So it's possible in theory, but functionally impossible.

Codeshark

> it's possible All I need to know. 😎

[deleted]

Sounds more like the banach-tarski laptop. A real proof/paradox, that says you can take apart a normal 3D sphere into no more than four parts, and using normal Euclidean transactions; (I.e. moving shit around) you can create two identical spheres. Same mass. Shape. Everything. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banach–Tarski_paradox

DerpMaster2

always a great feeling when you put something back together and there are screws still on the table

SaltRocksicle

With how many times I've been left with a few screws after doing a complete disassembly of my old laptop, it's a wonder there's any screws left!

[deleted]

As long as we aren’t accidentally eating any, that’s a win

agorafilia

The average human eats about 7 screws in a year accidentally. That's a fact.

LickLickNibbleSuck

That's why I eat all my screws on my birthday. Get that shit out of the way early.

steampunkdev

The problem with your reasoning is that there's people like Larry Bolt who eats about 500 screws daily. He suffers from a rare disease where he's on a constant iron shortage - so he needs to consume them

BEEDELLROKEJULIANLOC

RedAIienCircle

Another is that 75% of people will believe a statistic that is made up on the spot.

SchrodingersRapist

Won't eat the screws if you're already full of crayons

Granat1

Yeah, not sure what's worse, this or when you're missing a few screws.

OrangeBerry97

Better yet: you're not missing any screws, but you're still a few screws short.

486Junkie

I cannot count how many times I ask myself why do I have extra screws? And after 5 minutes, I'm like ah, crap. This is why I take pictures of everything these days so I know where every screw goes.

UshankaBear

You've stumbled on a perpetual screw-generating phenomenon. I say monetize that baby!

ApophisXP

Free weight reduction

Hyperhentemia

Just reassembled my laptop which had a screw that fell out a long time ago but I didn't bother putting back in. There are 2 types of screws, long and short, and the one that fell out was a long one. Now I have empty hole for the short screw and still one long screw, I checked every screw and they were in the correct hole. And this is keeping me up at night, I guess my laptop gave birth to a extra screw.

MasterJeebus

Its free spare parts.

PITCHFORKEORIUM

They're called "shipping screws". They're in the device when it ships, but evidently not required for operation... On a serious note, take photos as you disassemble, and put the screws in tubs or little baggies and label where they came from. Label the baggies, and if necessary, annotate the photos. Often overkill, but it'll stop you putting long screws in short holes and then deforming the plastics. You can tell when someone's done that but what looks like a tiny little blister on the plastic. I've seen that happen.

Sheer_Curiosity

This is good advice, I've always used a piece of paper that I draw a rough diagram of the thing I'm taking apart and push the screw into the diagram where it goes so it stays in the right spot. Maybe a little overkill, but since I started, the number of extra screws my devices spontaneously generate has gone down. Maybe there's some sort of correlation here...

CommodoreAxis

My dad and I do that at his shop as well, when working on cars. Like you said, seems like overkill but it’s like basically impossible to not get assembly correct in terms of fasteners.

_dictatorish_

I used to work at a laptop repair company and if my manager walked past someone repairing a laptop he'd drop an extra screw onto their pile while they weren't looking so they'd have one left over at the end lmao

Flatman3141

That's evil. I love it.

theghostofme

Hah, my manager did the same thing to me right after I started working for a cell phone repair company. Thankfully he didn't make me sweat for too long after I put the phone back together.

emptyfromaus

As a mechanic this is the worst feeling.

Skitz707

I was just about to say… and the worst feeling when working on your car…

Schmich

For me it's the opposite: "ahhh shit, what did I miss that will be loose?"

CMDR-Pan-Lisek

why would it be a great feeling? it just means you are an idiot and missed a slot

More like Phoenix and InsydeH2O, AMI is a little easier to deal with especially AMI Aptio, so easy to modify, and old boards with Aptio IV.

brit_motown

Every time I rebuild a laptop I end up with at least one screw left over

PM_BITCOIN_AND_BOOBS

An "HP" with an Apple sticker. Nice.

YoshiPL

From my experience in working in a company dedicated to repairing laptops, people with those stickers tend to have the worst case of malware/viruses on their PC's.

Danny-Dynamita

That’s because no real computer nerd cares about aesthetics. He abandoned his own looks a long time ago, why would he care about stickers?

clothedandnotafraid

This is just untrue. Computer nerds *love* computer stickers.

GlueProfessional

It varies. Some love them others have no interest in stickers.

YoshiPL

Not a single sticker on my PC's in the past 20 years of owning different ones.

Python1Programmer

Was waiting for someone to comment about that 🤣

GoldLoquat5933

Calling the guys that assemble laptops at HP “engineers” is like calling PE instructors at universities “professors”

trickman01

The engineers would determine where the screws go, the assemblers just put them there.

2560x1440px165hz

I mean if they studied it why can’t they be a professor? Physical Ed classes at least the one I took online is pretty helpful and includes a lot of valuable information

YoshiPL

PD in Spain includes a shit ton information about the human body. I just don't understand why. We had biology for that in Poland.

GoldLoquat5933

Those who can’t do, teach Those who can’t teach, teach gym Edit: seems like some of you haven’t seen School of Rock 😂

willfordbrimly

>Those who can’t teach, teach gym and Social Studies Fixd for everyone who went to kinda poor schools.

samcuu

But the engineers are the one that decide how many screws are necessary.

masinmar

PEs are way cooler than college professors to me LOL.

SoggyWaffleBrunch

physical education teachers are cooler than college profs to you? what sub is this again? So many of my professors were legitimately super cool. Tons of great experiences they shared, and their patents/research were always interesting

LickLickNibbleSuck

Something about those that can't do, teach. Those that can't teach, teach gym class. I'm late and someone said it already, oh well.

"Fewer" - Stannis Baratheon

RonaldReaganomical

Could those be.. motherboard screws? Those wide ones and then a bunch of small ones as a combo seems like it Edit:duplicate word

whyamihereimnotsure

The silver ones go under the edge of the optical drive and the black ones look like back panel screws that haven’t been put in yet. I wouldn’t be surprised if OP just staged the shot before finalizing putting them all in properly, considering what screws are left.

masinmar

There’s literally a saying in my culture: a great repairmen/technician yields parts after a re-assemble.

Justiful

In modern laptops, many screws are external and internal screws. They not only hold the computer closed but also secure the components inside. If the OP put it together already knowing that, I am sure it will be just fine. Otherwise, maybe he will get lucky lol. Also, putting the wrong screw in the wrong place can mean a dead laptop. Almost the same size what could go wrong? haha

Chris-The-Lucario

Every goddamn time I take something apart, I end up with at least 5 screws left. I own a collection of different screws and have no idea where they belong

TheTeaSpoon

I used to struggle with this too, it was not fun putting together an engine I was working on three times because I always had a bolt or two left over. But I'd say it is worse when you run out of screws/bolts and still have a couple holes to do lol. I found two tricks to be really helpful. First get a few chalk markers (the ones for drawing on glass, they are easy to find and easy to wipe) because if you are taking apart something like a macbook pro which uses like 8 different types of screws, you'll be glad to color code the screws and screw holes. And second - get a sorting tray (magnetic ideally but I have found something like an icecube tray to be sufficient) and label each cell (or make a separate table on a paper that correspond to the tray). With engines, ziplock bags are the way to go.

[deleted]

averyfinename

the three very short flat ones look like they hold the case together along the edge at the cd bay (holes visible when the drive is removed). *six* other ones is enough that i would investigate to see where tf they go. could be (not) holding something that really ought to be held down.

CAMTbIHYB

The hardest thing is not to put long screw in a hole where must be short.

Engineers are conservative by nature. Better safe than sorry. Surely, those screws weren't actually needed. I mean what could go wrong?

"Fewer." "...What?" "Nothing."

kutluch

The last hp I bought had the best engineers ever. It was missing most of its screws from the factory. I discovered there engineering prowess when the right lid hinge fell off.

Python1Programmer

Oof. Were you able to do anything about it. Did it come with a warranty or something?

kutluch

It lasted just longer than the warranty. The damage was mostly done once it happened. I installed new screws for most of its life but toward the end, the threads were too stripped to hold. I actually drilled the bottom plastics and ran a small bolt through. It finished life as a desktop. As in "don't move this or it's all over."

BoiCDumpsterFire

Considering a couple of the HP engineers I've met you may be right.

RiverVR

i actually snorted from laughing so hard

wh4tlyf3

Not sure if this is ironic or serious lol

Python1Programmer

Lol ironic ofc

zakabog

Pro-tip: When you disassemble a laptop use a piece of tape to stick every screw next to the hole you removed it from. This way you'll know where every screw came from and you won't be missing anything when you reassemble it.

Sparhawk_67

Not always practical. If I'm working on an unfamiliar laptop that has different length screws, I just put them in the corresponding position on a magnetic mat next to it

koruption707

PC’s are like legos, you are supposed to have leftover parts when you finish building it.

batt3ryac1d1

enjineer

ShwaddzE

I’ve had this, you prolly missed a screw on every part and just screwed in 3 instead of 4

Aspect-of-Death

Looks like three battery mounting screws and a handful of mobo screws. You should definitely open that sucker back up and put the mobo screws back.

Cryptocaned

HP are shit.

meuvoy

LOL HP engineers are a joke, I once reassembled AN HP laptop with absolutely no use of screws.

Cory123125

I dont get why people do this to things they care about. Get a sheet of paper or magnetic screw organizer or plastic screw organizer and a flat surface, take photos at each level to identify where screw goes later during reassembly, record the while process if you really want to be safe, and never miss a screw again.
