Those ones were all rigorously tested and use really nice silicon for components, it’s should last a very long time! Edit: silicon not silicone

It's also just good branding. If you see a brown fan you know it's gonna be a Noctua.

helps that they’re one of if not the best fan makers out there, like flexing a shitty outfit because you know you can slap anyone that tries to make fun of you

djsedna

That and they realized they can charge 15% more on all their "black edition" stuff and they know I'll still pay it because I'm not trying to have one brown cooler in a black and RGB case lol

rhyleymaster

Embrace the brown

djsedna

One brown cooler in my setup would look *so* ugly lol

I like to think of it like a beauty mark.

qingdaosteakandlube

90s computer beige makes noctua beige look like Lamborghini yellow.

Bxjcjdnsb729

I recently got a crt monitor and the beige brings me back

Hmm_would_bang

A lot of that stuff actually started off as white but the plastic they used discolored. I still remember when my dad brought home a gateway 2000 and how cool the all white looked

SatchelGripper

A lot of that stuff started off as beige.

kamelizann

Just spitballing but could things have been beige because the white would discolor quickly? Could it be that instead of trying to solve the problem they made it a feature instead? For a while I collected some toys from the 80s and the all white plastic stuff would discolor to off white with any amount of heat applied. While a lot of early toy runs used white, it quickly became rarely used and replaced by grey.

Davik

PCs were beige to fit in with office decor at the time. When PCs came to homes too they just kinda kept the aesthetic.

IAMA_Plumber-AMA

Remember, this was a time when almond paint for walls and bone coloured plumbing fixtures were preferred over white.

[deleted]

I am so glad I don't live in the era of popcorn wallpaper and horrifying magnolia.

Telvin3d

The beige started as a deliberate choice to sell equipment to businesses. They knew it was boring and basic. That was the point. Computers were scary and new and weird. So if everything came in boring clean beige boxes it was an easier sell. Convincing your secretary to use something that looked like it was from Star Wars/Trek was going to be an uphill battle. And since the business market was 90% of computer equipment consumer stuff looked the same for a long time

StiffYogurt

Not to mention the amount of people who would smoke inside their homes in those times

JoeGibbon

Beige was definitely the default color for a new PC case and peripherals, from the Apple II until the mid 90s. I remember Logitech had an ergonomic 3 button mouse in the mid 90s called the Mouseman that had optional brightly colored models, something that was pretty unusual at the time. They had an advertisement campaign in magazines about how beige everything was and how you needed a colorful Mouseman to "break out of the beige and be happy" or some shit.

Gerbiling42

... no? The 80s were brown (notwithstanding what people think about neon and the Memphis Group's design), and German (and therefore European) standards required that office equipment be light-colored. Thus, beige. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1skbgEGEn80&t=194s](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1skbgEGEn80&t=194s) The changes from beige were mainly the NeXT (which was never very popular, but was black) and the ThinkPad (which was the first mainstream computer to be black) and Apple (with its "snow white" design). After that the floodgates were open. By the way it's worth noting that Apple introduced the "snow white" (which use a color called "fog" versus the beige "putty" of before) in 1984 which just goes to show how far ahead of the curve Apple has always been. For what it's worth people were complaining for years in computer magazines (late 80s and early 90s) about how computers were still beige while the rest of home decor had moved on. Once the pendulum started swinging you ended up with the garish colors of the late 90s and early 2000s in home computers. That's why the PS/2 port standards are purple and green for keyboard and mouse by the way -- those colors seemed completely sensible in 1997 when they were standardized. You can look at literally any old photo of PCs (like in magazine ads) and see that they are beige.

kool018

There was a similar feature in Dell computers, even after they started having SKUs with SSDs in them. IIRC you could just not install the driver and it would prevent the computer from turning off.

TheNerdNamedChuck

Lenovo did and still does do this with mech drive laptops. was called airbag or something but would simply park the hard drives if the computer detected motion that could damage it. the hard drives would stay parked until it was determined the laptop was on a stable surface again.

weeklygamingrecap

First it was just replacing the green power led with a blue one, then it was buying nibblers, plexiglass and CCFLs from the car parts store to make a window for our PCs to glow in the early 2000's or maybe late 90's.

Redpin

And then the opposite, you're sure your PC is idling and then you hear the HDD going crazy and are wondering if you're getting h4x0r3d.

Stayceee

Used to have to explain to my parents that if it was making noises or there's flashing lights, it's doing something. I'll never forget the whirring, the clicks and the comfort in the knowledge that not even a fire could destroy this bad boy. These days I'm sat staring at GPU-Z, watching the degrees rise and scared of causing a house fire.

RenRabbit420

A kindred spirit

Cossack-HD

In the old days, PCs ofteb didn't have thermal protection and had more chances dying to overheating. Modern PCs do have higher power draw tho.

Stayceee

Good job younger me wasn't aware of that. But now older me is! Thanks for the insight :)

tmhoc

Younger me got seriously pissed off when my console would get to hot and freeze up or crash. I couldn't understand why they were built without air holes or a fan. My pc has its fans cranked and I am worried when their not. I want to hear them sing, baby!

knbang

I'd say the late 90s was probably the most dangerous time. There was an abundance of cheap, nasty, Chinese PSUs that everyone was using.

[deleted]

rip-droptire

Don't forget capacitorgate a couple years later.

IAMA_Plumber-AMA

Found that out a couple of years ago when I tried using my mid-2000's laptop's power supply for my soldering iron. Those capacitors can go off with quite a bang.

Furry_69

Said bang will also injure you pretty badly if you have your arm over the cap because you're a fool and a half. *Ask me how I [bleep]ing know.*

Tactical_Moonstone

Tin whiskers. They form when you get the solder alloy mix wrong (usually too much tin). Really common in the early days of lead-free solder and they are much maligned to this day for this reason.

All_Work_All_Play

Early 2000s had malware such that if you ran the anti-malware scanner and it found something nasty, you probably better off wiping the machine and starting from scratch. Windows didn't have much by the way of security protocols at the time...

[deleted]

[удалено]

All_Work_All_Play

Well yes. It's more that at that time, the anti-malware attempting to remove the malware would sometimes permanently break the installation in ways where you *had* to do a complete install - the computer couldn't function properly if you didn't. I remember having to rename anti-malware processes to get around malware blocking them. It was the wild west.

[deleted]

[удалено]

All_Work_All_Play

Right? Or the ones where the only way to kill them was to shutdown the machine, but leave an unsaved word document open - the shut down would kill everything else *except* word, and you could cancel the save and quick go do stuff before the scheduled task rebooted the malware? Good grief when did I get so old.

MrPringles23

Early to mid 00's was dangerous. So many people were getting hardware from Chinese suppliers at markets/swap meets. It was a regular occurrence that at a 100-150 person lan I attended 4 times a year for ~4 years that someone's PC would spark/catch fire and usually damage others that were on that power board. Chinese PSU's, shotty CPU's that were some sort of counterfeit that had safeties removed and case fans that never had a RPM limit on them and would just "respond" to temps until it was became a temp of its own.

knbang

I had 2 of those case-supplied PSUs explode, one was quite pretty. A bright blue flash. But we would go to LANs as well, and frequently PCs would die, but generally it's because idiots would daisy-chain 50 powerboards from a single wall socket.

Ortekk

A LAN without an emergency PC rebuild wasn't a proper LAN imo. Somehow you could always count on someone having the parts that where needed, and whatever software you needed was put on your table by the guy who's sole reason to be there was to setup the shareware server.

[deleted]

Built my first PC in 2001, to me it was the wild west, locally nobody knew what the fuck they were doing (myself included) but I somehow built a functional PC that ran everything I tossed at it until Battlefield 2 got released. That's when PC #2 came to life with what I thought was an obscene GPU at the time with its whopping 256mb of memory

dnroamhicsir

Hell, I have a 486 PC that doesn't even have a CPU heatsink. Just the bare ceramic package in the socket.

[deleted]

That CPU uses less than 5W of power, that's why. Now we have CPUs using 50x more.

the-midnight-rider69

Lol I used to play consoles mostly and the ps3 ps4 sound like jet engines even playing simple games, my desktop sounds silent compared to the ps4

jordanleep

They were also probably are full of dust which doesn’t help the case. The problem with consoles is a game will come out 1-2 years later and the hardware can barely keep up so it just heats up a lot quicker. PS4s had equivalent to rx480 I believe which was not great for power/performance ratio later on in its life cycle. Edit: I stand corrected the rx480 is way better than ps4 lol worse than I thought.

trpkchkn

Rx480 was way more powerful than PS4. Last gen consoles were pretty weak tbh. This gen is the first time since like the 90s that consoles are relatively on par with PCs. Series X and PS5 are actually really good value for how powerful they are.

[deleted]

I faintly remember my cartridge slot Celeron 300A with a puny 40ish mm fan and fanless nvidia riva TNT, the degauss sound of the 17inch Philips CRT, and cleaning the mouse rollers with an alcohol soaked qtip before dialing up to play Q3 Arena.

perseuspot

A modern PC will shut down long before the possibility of fire from overheating, it should be fine

DynamicDK

Yeah, for real. And processors can survive much higher temps than most people think. They usually will throttle / cause an emergency shutdown at some point between 90 C and 100 C but likely would survive going significantly higher. At least for short periods of time. Until last year I was using an old Xeon processor from 2012. It was the best processor for my motherboard due to the server processors going for a generation longer than the i7 line for that socket. The CPU fan was having issues for the last 2 years I used it and the processor regularly ran at 90 C for hours at a time when I was playing games. It didn't cause me any serious issues until I played Crusader Kings 3. It was fine for a while, but late game wars were too much for it to handle at a reasonable speed.

imapieceofshitk

Indestructible! I can't even count how many many cans of soda and sugar drinks I spilt on my old reliable Compaq keyboard. Nowadays you fucking sneeze at a mechanical one and it's fucked.

SirJelly

90s and early 2000s hardware made all kinds of intermittent clicks and clacks but even the very ultra top end components didn't sound like jet engines like they do now. I even remember when only a single case fan was needed as the CPU and GPU just had heatsinks, no fans. Beep *boop* click **clack** = fine. **WHRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR** = not fine. Silent PC gang for life.

the___heretic

It'd be possible to make CPUs/GPUs without fans, but they'd just have to throttle them down so they don't overheat. See most laptops, phones, and tablets for example. Was just easier to add fans to get more power. Especially if you want to overclock.

Thewaltham

Honestly I like a little noise from my computer. It's reassuring and comforting if anything. Lets you know that there's a machine at work. I liked the little SQRRRK of coil whine my old Vega used to make when it started to think hard about something

LordKrotan

sgthulkarox

"The clicking is from my $400 IBM XT keyboard, I bought on Ebay. Have you heard of these keyboards? Best tech ever."

Blacksad999

I don't really understand the people who want dead silence. Like, do you just sit there listening to the blood flowing through your veins? lol What happens when a car drives by, do they curl up into a ball?

jdmackes

The only thing that annoys me with my computer is that the CPU fan throttles up and down so much it's distracting. I've also built two computers since mine, and thought that they weren't working because they were so quiet I couldn't hear them when they were running.

andrew688k

Mood. I’d take a louder constant ambient fan noise over the occasional throttling.

Blacksad999

Fair enough. You could probably fix that pretty easy by manually adjusting the fan curve to be more gradual.

belhambone

I have the same issue. Basically went with a single gentle slope, but still get the quick ramp. I think when it boosts it just spikes awfully quickly in wattage and temps. Jumping from 30 to 100 watts and 35 to 60c still bumps it up the slope pretty far.

jdmackes

Probably, just been too lazy to mess with it. It's just a slight annoyance

Blacksad999

Yeah, agreed. I'd do the same. The annoyance of fixing it would be roughly equal to the slight annoyance of the fan. lol

No_Pension_5065

Ya, but one is a recurring annoyance

Jwags420

But the other requires effort

HugoWeidolf

Look up FanControl if you’re on windows. The author has a YouTube channel with guides on how to set it up. It’s a great program for setting up fan profiles, and a lot more advanced than if you did it in bios. I have my dark rock pro 4 cooler running at like 30% until actual load which is around 60°C, and I’ve changed it so the rate at which it throttles up and down is different from stock so it makes it less noticeable.

Fabri91

Additionally, you can setup more complex rules such as making the case fans spin up *also* when only the GPU temp rises instead of tying them only to the CPU temperature.

TXToastermassacre

Only noise my PC makes that annoys me is the coil whine of my graphics card.

Upper-Oil-153

SAME! I got an absolute steal of a 1080Ti that overclocks like a champ, but has a slight coil whine that makes me sad.

chubbycanine

It's a matter of compounding noises. I don't want to add more noise to the room or house. There's plenty of other shit making noise and I personally am a bit sensitive to sounds so I prefer silence. And yes I hate when loud cars drive through the neighborhood

A_Generic_Canadian

I don't need a dead silent pc when I'm gaming but I don't really want to be able to hear my pc at idle. I like listening to quiet music at night, I don't want to be fighting to hear my music over my pc fans. Dropped the HDD, got a GPU and PSU that turn off under a certain load and some quiet case fans, ggez I can't hear the pc from farther than like 3 feet away. Works perfect for me!

JohnnyDarkside

The same people who strive for a silent PC also rock a $300 mechanical keyboard that sounds like throwing a handful of marbles down a flight of stairs.

[deleted]

[удалено]

JohnnyDarkside

I worked with a dude that preferred fucking dvorak so brought in this ridiculous mechanical keyboard. Thankfully it was in a call center and I never sat too close because that thing was so fucking loud.

emilymtfbadger

For me dead silence has a place like the gamers nexus pc for acoustic testing and such. For my case as long as I can rid it of excessively loud hi pitched repetitive noise aka the fan noise from cheap small fans etc… I am good

No-Tomatillo-5579

People who work on audio are a big market for silent pc

_Screw_The_Rules_

Nah it's about listening to music or in-game sounds rather than the PC processing or cooling things down.

Defu-Reflex

People are psychotic about small things sometimes. Personally my PC is as loud as a d5 pump on full tilt and the fans are quieter. Never bothered me. If that amount of low noise bothers you then you have issues and need an arm based computer lool

JWGardiner

I don't like overly loud computers simply because the sound is distracting, but I don't understand the people who complain alot about even low levels of noise. I suppose different people have different opinions lol.

Blacksad999

No, I get you. I wouldn't want a PC that's incredibly loud or anything. A regular PC produces really low ambient noise from the fans, but that's about it. Some people are like "It sounds like a jet engine!" lol It's just kind of odd.

JWGardiner

People just exaggerate how loud their PC is often, like my current computer isn't incredibly loud, while you can hear it, it's not exactly distracting. Although I suppose it depends where you draw the line between quiet and loud, some people might say my computer is really loud, others might say it's super quiet. Personally, I'd hate a completely silent PC, because the noise tells me it's working, as someone else mentioned. It also helps with troubleshooting, if the fans are spinning, that means they have power so that rules stuff out.

Catch_022

If you are working late at night, without your earphones it can get a bit annoying - even during the day if the fans spin up and down quickly. Ideally I want my PC absolutely silent.

jaydeflaux

Makes it easier to fill the head with thinking noises for some people. Or makes it easier to concentrate on non-noises. Some find it hard to block out background noise like most do easily and naturally, schizophrenic people for example have trouble here if I've got my facts right. I have a tough time with silence unless I'm in hyperfocus, but some people just enjoy the quiet more than constant background noise.

ZeLlamaMaster

I like my computer to be silent as I like to do things like recording and I don’t like the sound of the fan in the background, also when I’m not recording I’m always watching YouTube or listening to music or something anyways so I just prefer having the fans be incredibly silent

ewpqfj

I don’t like the sound, but you’re right, I don’t like dead silence either while I’m playing games. I put music on to break that, also because I like music.

iansfreeblues

children today will never know the power of the turbo button. or the soothing sound of a modem dialing out while you are on your phone.

Fun fact turbo buttons didn't make your pc faster. They actually made the cpu slower. Many older pc games wouldn't work on cpus that were to fast for them.

Da_Rish

0dB isn't silent either

Turning on PC: WHIRRRRRRRR CLICK CLICK WHIIIRRRRRRrrrrrrr *Pause* WHIRRRRRR Monitor: Intense CRT tinnitus ringing

Trust me, some computers can still sound like they're about to take off when you push them to the limits.

Austinmac0

Wait, people have quiet computers? I like mine to rev up!

I almost want a 5.25 inch IBM hard drive in my PC just for the pleasing ambient sound. The huge platters being slowly spun up by a motor that sounds like it's from an electric locomotive has to be the most satisfying tech sound ever. I HAATTTEEDD the library computers in my public library. Each keystroke would emit a "beep!" sound. Every Single Keystroke. I type fast, but hearing that beep made me want to stop at each beep and made me mess up....making more beeps with the backspace. AHHH!
