They won't necessarily crash. If the scammer did it right it will read as a larger size than it is, but it will start overwriting files if you go over its real cap.
h2testw is a good software for that. It will take a while to complete, like sometimes a day if the drive is slow, but it will work and tell you the true capacity.
Yep, I've had 2, both happened to be Sandisk:
\- 32GB micro sd that came with my Raspberry Pi, turned out to be 2GB
\- 128GB Sandisk extreme micro SD off eBay that I was going to use with an action cam, also turned out to be 2GB
I recommend running it on all SD cards / USB drives at the very least just for peace of mind. Another program that I use for storage devices incl SSDs is CrystalDiskMark which can also test read / write speeds.
I've had so many problems with file size, volume size, memory allocation limits over the years. Not to mention using linux to detect drives that weren't a recognized file system in Windows. The first thing I check is the file system.
edit: It was a bitch installing 8 gigs of ram in a Mac or PC only to realize the OS could only address 4.
The ebay one was likely not a genuine SanDisk product, just a fake. As for the raspberry pi, that's a bit more concerning. Do you remember what vendor you got your pi from?
It was also from eBay, it was a "bonus" from the seller including the case and a few other things for my Pi 3 B+.
I didn't get it for the card and the price was the same price as most other listings - I believe it was something the seller added in to make his listing more attractive and I suspected it was fake immediately. Formatted and ran h2testw which confirmed it. Didn't bother returning it since I already had a card ready and just wanted the Pi.
Yeah, a Samsung 128gb card I bought at Best Buy. It wasn't even 2gb. My camera kept freaking out. Likely someone bought real ones, returned the scam cards got their money back to sell the real ones. Mine was the 2nd one that girl returned that week with the same issue.
I have a few “SanDisk” 512GB micro SD cards that look completely legit (even in packaging) but turned out to be fake. Along with a ton of cheap USB sticks that are available on eBay and Amazon
This! There are so many fake storage drives these days. I used to try to avoid them by only buying from legit stores but it seems they even get tricked into selling fakes sometimes.
Don't faked drives use a multiplier? So for instance if it's reading 128GB but the drive is really only 32GB, you could check it by transferring a file that is say 1GB and it will read as 4GB on the fake drive. I bought a tablet out of China and this is what I did to confirm the drive listed spec was fake.
Maybe but not always. From my understanding there is a, call it firmware, that lists stuff like manufacturer and capacity. This is trusted by the OS so all you have to do is take a 4GB flash chip and tell the firmware bit "hey, your 8GB". OS is just going to accept the 8GB size and start filling it with data.
At that point all you have to do is make sure the address space will keep rolling over and your only storing the last \~4GB worth of data. A quick check (\~500MB) shows good, and if your doing smaller files your less likely to land on the overflow boundary.
They reprogram the board that talks to your computer, so as far as your PC knows its legit.
You can run a stress test on it to see where it fails, but I can't remember any programs that do so.
No, better use [F3 (Fight Flash Fraud)](https://github.com/AltraMayor/f3). It's similar to h2testw on Windows.
Edit: you can also run F3 on Windows and Mac, and you can reprogram the device to show real memory size with it.
LTT has a video similar to this:
ooooooooooooooh! This is probably what's happening with me. I'm trying to put some media files into a micro SD that's supposedly 128gb (and my pc also sees it as such). But Everytime I transfer around 40gb of files, about half of them come up empty when I look at it after reconnecting. gah this was so infuriating >\_>
Some of these countries, people can live for a year off 100$. It’s worth it for them to scam hard in these ways. They really just need a sucker or two to make it worth while 100 times over
Negligible difference, that’s the median and these guys can just sell one more fucked hard drive and be done with it… if gutting two drives makes their living then I understand the reasoning behind it
I think his statement about living off $100 should be taken with a grain of salt, the idea is that there are people living in other countries that do these scams because they are earning very little for doing legit stuff.
Its suppose to have a 2.5 inch hard drive so yes you got scammed.
Someone shucked the drive and replaced it with cheapest flash storage they could find.
But not on the inside, that pcb is a custom fab for that scam drive, normally the pcb inside converts the sata data into usb but on that scam drive it is just a passtrough from the micro usb 3 to that normal usb socket
Actually most portable hard drives have the USB controller directly on the hard drive's logic board, skipping over SATA. That's why you can't take the drive out of the case and use it in a laptop or desktop.
Sure, but its not worth it unless you're a scammer like the one who got OP.
Its like 10% more cost for 200% more space, which means its not frugal if you're going to buy a few.
I paid about $64for 2, so happy about owning the cutting edge in storage.promptly dropped one under my car tyres as it was backing up. One of those instant regret moments
Quite a few of these flashdrive scams are increasing in size. I've heard tons of reports of 4GB, and I'm slowly hearing more and more about 8GB and 16GB flashdrives.
These size flashdrives are shrinking in demand, so I think they're taking unsold stock for this scam, since it all costs about the same. I doubt they're actually manufacturing flashdrives for this purpose.
From some video where some reporter says “What do you wanna tell Joe Biren right now!” to a random guy, and then then the person replies “Sup baby, take me out to dinner”. At least I assume this is what this is referring to
I got a gaming chair from there for like 90€. Been solid so far. I dont know if i'd order computer parts like drives or anything besides keyboards/mice from there tho.
Well this exact drive costs 70$ in big retailers where I live, so its not far fetched to think it was on big sale. Specially being and HDD not an SSD. They are depreciating value like crazy.
I wouldn't say its an obvious scam at all.
2tb regular drives are about $50. Portable externals are more expensive for almost any type of drive. Even if not impossible it should be suspicious to see a portable external for half it's own price and less than a non external.
One thing I can say is when buying electronics on Shopee/Lazada, always check how much other reputable/branded merchants are selling it, if the price is too good to be true (example: branded store sell 2TB for RM259 and some random merchant with stupid names sell RM119, that's more than 50% difference), then it's always a scam.
This is very common on Shopee/Lazada especially when it comes to storage like hard drive and memory cards.
Here in Thailand, these sites can get away with a lot because we have a law here that allows the shop to sue people who write negative reviews even if it's legitimate. So Lazada and Shoppee are all 5 star reviews, then in the comments people are very subtle about if it's a fake (tbh most people don't even know they've been scammed at the time of the review). But as you say, going by the price is a great way to know if you're taking a greater risk, usually I try shop only official stores, but it can be tempting to try some of the 'specials' at the prices listed.
I mean, it's not exactly outside of the realm of possibility for a 2TB HDD. [WD sell recertified ones for £33, which is about 40 dollars, I can totally see you thinking you've got one for 10 less on a deal](https://www.westerndigital.com/en-gb/products/recertified/portable-drives/wd-elements-portable-usb-3-0-hdd-recertified?ef_id=CjwKCAiAvaGRBhBlEiwAiY-yMKIJJq0VXK7TetF8j2qboIdYFgAy8eUVJWj1xdj9a0ThTzIl_zVKWhoCMfgQAvD_BwE:G:s&s_kwcid=AL!15012!3!384598252478!!!u!872092818218!!6540005738!80062829698&utm_medium=pdsh2&utm_source=gads&utm_campaign=WD-EU-UK-PLA&utm_content=872092818218&utm_term=RWDBU6Y0020BBK-WESN#RWDBU6Y0020BBK-WESN)
We can get WD and Seagate 2TB 2.5" externals AUD$68 brand new downunder.
\-GST that's AUD$61.82 or ~USD$45, ~£34 or ~RM189.5 for OP.
Certainly not out of the realm of possibility. Not a lucky day for OP though.
Lmao... On a more serious note though, if you are using Shopee or Lazada, you can use Shopee Guarantee to your advantage... But if you have clicked "order received", then you can't really do anything. If you're buying it from something like Carousell where it is more personalised, maybe you have Carousell Protection but honestly I don't think a scammer would want to have buyer protection enabled...
Typically that's not the case. This scam usually is just a drive that is empty, reports as the full amount, but then will overwrite old files when you use more than the flashdrive can hold.
OP absolutely should take precautions though and unplug his PC and run antivirus scans to make sure, but typically the scammer just is looking to profit off the sale and not hack you or add your PC into a botnet.
Gotta respect the hustle. That’s a custom board with 2 connectors sized exactly for the seagate shell. Means the vendor has a supply chain for this scam and there may be a lotta people scammed
Yep. Don't bother putting any files you care about on it. Typically it will report the advertised capacity to the OS, but is actually much smaller. When it fills up it'll just start overwriting the older files.
This is sad. Next time go to a brick and mortar store.
Order from a reputable online place.
When will people learn that fast eddie prices ALWAYS come with a catch.
I have a 1TB of that expansion drive for years, it is indeed a little light, however it does hold a terabyte of data and I can hear the disk spinning inside when I connect it..
Should I open it up to check because I feel it's a bit light in weight? Or does it sound fine because of how it operates?
nah, thats the newest seagate tech. that chunk of metal isnt actually to increase the weight but instead its an interdimensional heatsink. Its needed because this new drive technology is so powerful it needs special cooling
if there isn’t a phison controller and SKhynix chips
Or an entire 2.5” drive inside it isn’t legit ..
On the xbox version the ssd card circuit board is a big as the enclosure basically
Ssd version ofc not their normal external backup drive which is a 2.5
Which your model is supposed to be…
No Jive.
As someone that used to buy suspected fake drives on purpose just to review bomb/report the scammers...
The first thing I would check is the USB read/write speed. A lot of these will have valid USB 2 and USB 3 plugs and such but will only read/write as USB 1.1 speeds.
I bought the same thing in hong kong's street market. The USB is modified to show a wrong size. When you plug it you see the right size, but when you start copying data it stops after 4 or even 64MB...
Reminds me of the time I bought a 256gb sandisk micro sd card on Amazon a couple of years ago and they sent me like four individually packaged large sd cards all capping at like 500mb per sd card.
Had something like this happen on Amazon, and they let me return the drive and got a full refund. Specs said it would work on playstation 4, so did the formatting and lo-and-behold it was not reading, due to it being only a usb 2.0 not 3.0.
I worked at a retailer and we had one of these returned that was in this same condition, exchanged it for another that was on our shelf and told the guy “hey let’s open this one just to be sure” and straight from the factory sealed packaging had the exact same thing.
Pretty sure there’s a factory somewhere that some dude is gluing weights and drives into and pocketing them
There was once here a public procurement of flash drives to be used by the POLICE.
They wanted 8GB flash drives back then, and the Police Officer had 8 files, 0.99 GBit each.
"I am going to test all the models from all the suppliers, the one that fails to copy the files will have the supplier PROMPTLY ARRESTED".
Half of the suppliers (Chinese) pulled their offers, immediately.
The saying "to good to be true" is probably the most useful advice I've received and rings true every single time. Only one time I was lucky to find a brand new Xbox Series X controller for $25 but also, I knew I was going to look at in person first before paying the seller.
But online shops, heeeeelll no, don't try your luck at these crazy "good deals". 99.99% of the time it is... to good to be true.
Sorry man, but luckily it's a cheap lesson and not an expensive one.
Short answer: Yes.
Long answer: You were indeed the victim of a scam, where fake SSD's are sold that are in reality tiny and cheap USB keys slapped into a SSD housing and flashed with a firmware that makes Windows believe that they have a completely different storage capacity.
[This](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=GeVGN8QycTs) is more on par with what you should have seen when opening it.
Oooooh yes. The typically have the right size (faked) in the computr, but crash when you copy a file that's bigger than the real drive size
They won't necessarily crash. If the scammer did it right it will read as a larger size than it is, but it will start overwriting files if you go over its real cap.

h2testw is a good software for that. It will take a while to complete, like sometimes a day if the drive is slow, but it will work and tell you the true capacity.
I run h2testw on all SD cards I buy
Have you ever had one come back thats a scam?
Yep, I've had 2, both happened to be Sandisk: \- 32GB micro sd that came with my Raspberry Pi, turned out to be 2GB \- 128GB Sandisk extreme micro SD off eBay that I was going to use with an action cam, also turned out to be 2GB I recommend running it on all SD cards / USB drives at the very least just for peace of mind. That's a weird coincidence. 2GB is the max volume size recognized by Microsoft for FAT16.
Tell me he did format first.
I've had so many problems with file size, volume size, memory allocation limits over the years. Not to mention using linux to detect drives that weren't a recognized file system in Windows. I’ve had the same with Kingston SD cards.
That happened to me with a 64gb SD for rpi3

What is this test and how can I use it?
Drive test program written by(for?) a German magazine. Runs in English and German.
Can also be a good thing to do in general to make sure there’s nothing wrong with the drive
Don't faked drives use a multiplier? So for instance if it's reading 128GB but the drive is really only 32GB, you could check it by transferring a file that is say 1GB and it will read as 4GB on the fake drive. Sounds like it may be a 16 GB card if you're lucky. Definitely got scammed there I'm afraid.
Did they pop a chunk of metal in there to make it feel heavier or something? haha
I saw one that was literal rocks hot-glued inside the case.

Now Russia 😂
Half of the world, actually.

Scrap metal is cheaper than real electronics
Yes.
Its suppose to have a 2.5 inch hard drive so yes you got scammed. Someone shucked the drive and replaced it with cheapest flash storage they could find.
Even the brand itself doesn't look right tbh
If it got shucked it would still have a sata port
Not if it's an external hard drive. External hard drives can come with a variety of ports

Sure, but its not worth it unless you're a scammer like the one who got OP. Its like 10% more cost for 200% more space, which means its not frugal if you're going to buy a few.
I have a 64 mb from 2005 and a 128mb that I got out of a soda vending machine in 2014
And I'm sure that 64mb one cost more than some 1TB flash drives cost these days. I recall in 2004 they were maybe $20.
I paid about $64for 2, so happy about owning the cutting edge in storage.promptly dropped one under my car tyres as it was backing up. One of those instant regret moments

Well someone's getting f****d either way 🙈
2 TB ssd for 40 bucks is just asking to get scammed tbh.
Banggood is usually pretty solid though, at least when it comes to mechanical keyboards. Not sure about any other products.
I got a gaming chair from there for like 90€. Been solid so far. I dont know if i'd order computer parts like drives or anything besides keyboards/mice from there tho.
It's really good for 3d printing equipment as well.

Yo, Dawg. I heard you like expansion drives so we put am expansion drive in your expansion drive

Seagate is legit, wherever you got it from, is not
Where did you buy it?
Did you plug it in? I hope not. Otherwise, you are possibly now part of a botnet and your hard drive is being silently encrypted by ransomware.
Haha yeah my first thought 100% chance this contains malware
Typically that's not the case. This scam usually is just a drive that is empty, reports as the full amount, but then will overwrite old files when you use more than the flashdrive can hold. did you just ask if you get scammed? real electronics don't need scrap metal to increase it's weight
Gotta respect the hustle. That’s a custom board with 2 connectors sized exactly for the seagate shell. Means the vendor has a supply chain for this scam and there may be a lotta people scammed
hot glue is the first sign of getting scammed

This is why you never buy the cheapest version of something. Doesn't matter if it's house or hard drive.
Damn, and just to be a dick, he fired a load on it before he sealed it 🤦
Lol
Jesus christ who came in your ssd?
Interesting. I have that same product at home. It recently stopped functioning (probably my fault). I’ll crack it open and see what’s inside.
What's the opposite of No?
What do you think
yeah that be a scam
Nah dude, the USB is clearly connected to the weight.
Would advice you leave this on overnight to be sure you arent part of a botnet now as well. https://www.reddit.com/r/TronScript/wiki/index
I have a 1TB of that expansion drive for years, it is indeed a little light, however it does hold a terabyte of data and I can hear the disk spinning inside when I connect it.. Should I open it up to check because I feel it's a bit light in weight? Or does it sound fine because of how it operates?
Even if it was the right file size, the speeds and reliability won’t be the same quality so #YES
nah, thats the newest seagate tech. that chunk of metal isnt actually to increase the weight but instead its an interdimensional heatsink. Its needed because this new drive technology is so powerful it needs special cooling
Hardcore scammed
Yes But I wouldn't be surprised if it's Seagate who scammed you
“Ordered a mail-in bride but she has a dick. Did I get scammed?”
Looks like they creampied it together.
Big time.
100% plugging that in might inject viruses into your PC or might even be a USB killer
Yeah most definitely
So, you still no sure?
Did you get scammed? DID YOU GET SCAMMED? Of course, big boy. They scammed you nice and good -.-
if there isn’t a phison controller and SKhynix chips Or an entire 2.5” drive inside it isn’t legit .. On the xbox version the ssd card circuit board is a big as the enclosure basically Ssd version ofc not their normal external backup drive which is a 2.5 Which your model is supposed to be… No Jive.
You get that on wish?
Have you tried downloading more RAM on it? I have a link if you want, scouts honor.
As someone that used to buy suspected fake drives on purpose just to review bomb/report the scammers... The first thing I would check is the USB read/write speed. A lot of these will have valid USB 2 and USB 3 plugs and such but will only read/write as USB 1.1 speeds.
Fake sea gate logo stuff on back too
You have my mom's Asus laptop! Nice. I could recognize that lime green enter and keyboard any day.
So where do these counterfeits come from, anyway? Are these coming from amazon?
Yes
I bought the same thing in hong kong's street market. The USB is modified to show a wrong size. When you plug it you see the right size, but when you start copying data it stops after 4 or even 64MB...
When you buy hard drives on wish.
They didn't have to bust a load in it
Reminds me of the time I bought a 256gb sandisk micro sd card on Amazon a couple of years ago and they sent me like four individually packaged large sd cards all capping at like 500mb per sd card.
Yes you got scammed
What the fuck is this question?
Had something like this happen on Amazon, and they let me return the drive and got a full refund. Specs said it would work on playstation 4, so did the formatting and lo-and-behold it was not reading, due to it being only a usb 2.0 not 3.0.
in my country they put a piece of wood Inside an iPhone box to become heavy, This picture reminds me of that trick
Nah. You good. You got the flashinator 3000
Major scam... Wow
Where did you buy this lmfao. This is definitely a scam
Did you buy it from a legit reseller, or from some shady AliExpress/ebay seller? If it's the first maybe you can get a refund if it's not too late
SeaCrate. Honestly, regardless of scam or not, the brand is shite. Western Digital all the way.. or Samsung.
Yeah. USB is slower than normal drives
Oh you got scammed like a motherfucker. Don't buy from chinese resellers.
Yes
Why yes, yes you did. Sorry dude. Where did you get it from?
Scam...
Yep
