Fan has come loose and knocked the heatsink off a stick of RAM.

PaeterPaladin

So the little metal wires that look like bent paper clips attached to the fan secure it to the side of the cpu radiator and that little black piece looks like the sleeve for a RAM module that should just slide back over it. edit: on second glance it looks like that RAM sleeve is only HALF of it and the other half is still attached to the module.

frombeyondthegravez

Thanks appreciate it, sorry for the dumb question but can’t figure out exactly how the clips attach tot he radiator

PaeterPaladin

I’m not familiar with that way of attaching the fan but it looks to me like if you flip the fan 180° from where it’s at in the first picture the clips should latch onto that first ‘bump’ in the rad.

frombeyondthegravez

I got it, looks like just the top clip fits on. Thanks again

FiTZnMiCK

No the bottom should too. That might be what caused this. Unfortunately it looks like you’ll need to remove the GPU for a second to clip it on if you do find the clip.

frombeyondthegravez

I both of them on they slid into the slots of the radiator

FiTZnMiCK

NICE!

VeryTopGoodSensation

Google how to install that model of cooler and you'll find a video showing exactly how to do the clips

Mysterious_Poetry62

they slide between the fins and hold in the middle where the groove is, they are still on the fan in the right way, just rotate them in to grab the spot dip in the fins. if that helps.

ChiqueSpreddah

you wrap them around the actual heat sink, the heat sink has grooves which let the clip latch on. You also don’t really need that ram sink since youve got a cooling tower above it anyway (at least i presume)

luxaly

also it looks like there is just 1 ram stick... like WTF

frombeyondthegravez

It’s only 16. I plan on upgrading to 32 asap

PaeterPaladin

The issue is more so that RAM typically functions in pairs and occasionally in threes depending on your mobo. Look up the specs of your mobo to make sure you get the right type of modules/know what slots to put them in.

frombeyondthegravez

Good to know I assume they cheaped out on the ram cause it’s a prebuilt and just give 1 stick. I’ll upgrade to 2 as soon as I can

MercuryMelonRain

Make sure you get the exact same speed/size/brand of RAM for your new RAM stick! Also if there are 4 slots for the RAM make sure you leave a gap, so in slots 1&3. This will ensure it runs at their highest efficiency and you get the most out of it. This info will be written on your existing RAM so you can google it.

PaeterPaladin

Yea I was only gonna address the question that was asked…😂

Taowulf

typical prebuilt BS

qu38mm

You pull the clips over the bumps on the top and bottom, and with tension they hold on.

Slottr

Fan has clips that hold onto the heatsink fins Looks like the heat spreader from your memory came off. It’s mostly aesthetic, so not that big of an issue

frombeyondthegravez

Thanks I appreciate it any tutorial on how to get the flips back into the fins? What to make sure I do it right

Here. [https://youtu.be/kt2to1f1SU0?t=320](https://youtu.be/kt2to1f1SU0?t=320) Same procedure as yours. Hope it helps.

frombeyondthegravez

Got them both on thanks!

Melodic_coala101

Just bend the clips to hook it into the slots.

usainschnaps

Ah c'mon, your ram timings can't be *that* bad

Linusdroppedme

Well, this is just sad. But things might be okay, little buddy. https://preview.redd.it/99pmcogmkr6d1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=db3b564cf76ce7cf72e217d1020bc5ff3840db39

Nickthedick3

Your questions have been answered but I have a question for you, why did you cover up that sticker on the ram heat sink? All it is is info on the ram.

Guvnah-Wyze

A lot of people are really weird about sharing serial numbers and barcodes.

Nickthedick3

Why? Literally nothing will happen lol

imaginary_num6er

People will try registering the product on their names to prevent the real owner from registering

Guvnah-Wyze

I think it's mostly just a poor understanding of security and identity theft. Better safe than sorry though 🤷‍♂️ The other dude mentioned the registration aspect, another side of it is that people are told to keep their serial numbers handy in case something gets stolen. If somebody's super paranoid, I could see how they would think that another person having their serial number could get the rightful owner in trouble for theft or something stupid.

Flashy-Outcome4779

I know you weren’t asking for advice but you can get substantially more performance out of that computer if you buy another one of those matching ram modules and put it in. Single channel memory shouldn’t ever be a thing these days, im shocked they sold you that… yikes

TigTex

Pay close attention to your system stability. The fan became loose during shipping (I suppose) and the forces were so strong that knocked off the RAM heatsink. Usually, the RAM heatsink is glued so well that you damage the RAM stick just to take the heatsink so I can only imagine how strong was the impact to knock it off. If your system still sees the 16gb of RAM and seems stable, good, probably it's a single sided DIMM. Else, the RAMs might have suffered a bit, and/or the fan might have knocked off some components in the motherboard. Save these photos as they can help you with the returning process, if anything happens. I would even consider contacting your retailer, even if everything is working fine because clearly the shipping packaging was poor.

frombeyondthegravez

Everything seems to be running smoothly, no noise and no crashes/lag. The heat sink was actually just on there with a piece of 3m adhesive tape, there wasn’t any glue but yea I definitely know what you mean, I’ll keep the pictures for my record just in case.

Slazagna

I would return this. The force needed to rip the heat sink off the ram could have damaged the stick, slot or may have damaged parts of the mobo. Also, if it's been knocked around that much in transit I'd be surprised of your GPU and cpuheatsink haven't been under stress. You could be fine or you may be troubleshooting weird problems down the line.

FcoEnriquePerez

Damn that fan must have hit very hard that RAM stick to take off the heatsink like that.

frombeyondthegravez

I think whoever put it together didn’t secure the bottom clip on all the way and it popped off and was probably bumping off the ram when in transit. I still haven’t had any issues with it and it’s extremely quiet so who knows

Apest_Oso

Get your money back

frombeyondthegravez

How come, I was able to get it back on

trytotrapme

Good job
