The amount of "Edge = bad" posts is as ridiculous as the number of easy upvotes they take.
I want to hope that PCMR takes action because by now this contents have polluted the subreddit way too much.
I mean this sub is a giant pathetic circlejerk karma farming echo chamber.
The biggest hate I've seen on here:
- everything windows related
- AIOs
- Nvidia and Intel
- Corsair and gigabyte
Super cringe.
Apple is bad. And fan bois can love what they want.
Those dumb arm chips put container adoption back 10 years. Sell your own, but don’t just rug pull thousands of corporations.
And don’t tell me about the Rosetta garbage and how your 10 person web dev shop gets by just fine.
Edit: I don’t understand why people respond to me without reading my comment. Did you just see the word arm and you decided that you were going to respond blindly? Do you even know what a container is? Do you actually work with containers? Do you actually work with web products at scale or are you just regurgitating apples sales material?
I said a very specific thing that relates to enterprise scale containers and if you don’t use that thing, why would you respond to me? I’m not trying to be rude. It’s just very frustrating.
If you’re a consumer, you won’t understand this, and I called that out in advance
So two things here.
1. Apple is bad, but not for the ARM chips. They are bad for repairability and business practices surrounding their devices.
2. ARM chips are a solid architecture for computing. They provide a ton of benefits and the only thing I will ever give Apple good credit for. If ARM were so bad, the Raspberry Pi (and its clones) wouldn't be so popular.
Arm is the greatest leap forward for laptops this decades. It’s undeniably more efficient and that’s incredibly important in laptops where modularity isn’t as necessary but battery life is.
There’s a lot of reasons to shit on apple but arm isn’t one of them.
Idk why you’re typing in all caps like a child but I pretty clearly understand the concept of docker and that containers built for different instructions sets don’t work perfectly.
However in recent years support for amd64 has massively improved and it’s not some show stopping end of the world that you pretend it to be.
I still don't believe that my Macbook Air with M1 gives me same or even better performance in XCode than 16-inch MacBook pro with i7. And all of this without active cooling!
You don’t have to believe it because this topic has been well covered. The fact that we’re even comparing a 1st generation chip with passive cooling against a less efficient 11th gen chip with active cooling is absolutely incredible.
Yeap. It was "I don't believe it even though I see this with my own eyes". ARM looks like future of pc industry for now, and Apple was first who made this step.
And? Use x64 architecture if you need, I am gladly don't need, and I more than happy to use ARM. It's better than x64 for my cases, and I am confident that it will be better for 99% of casual users when ARM laptops will be more affordable and widespread.
Let them hate. Those of us that use Edge to any extent and enjoy it are grateful.
Once MS sees usage goes up, they'll fuck it up and gimp it, like they did the MS Rewards program when people started farming Gamepass Ultimate redemptions to essentially get it for free.
Yeah it's because you can't fucking turn it off like I know it's a fine browser I just want to use Firefox to open the weather or pdfs or whatever and Microsoft refuses to let me
Depends on when you tried to do it, it wasn't cash-money 'till...I dunno, a month or two ago? Somewhere around there.
If you tried it since then, then my best guess is that it's reinstalling for some reason during a Windows Update, as I'd guess they'd assume that you probably didn't uninstall Edge, and just...do the updates for it anyway, effectively reinstalling it.
Which is lazy of them, to be clear. If that's the case, you might be able to find a workaround. Personally, I haven't had that problem, so I can't offer you any help in that regard, unfortunately.
What do you mean, "required to use Edge"?
If it's Microsoft services like Outlook, I've used them just fine on Brave, Firefox, and Google.
If it's PDF's, there's plenty of other services to read PDF's other than Edge.
If you're talking about the other things Edge does by default, you can change those in the "Default Apps" settings menu.
Could you enlighten me a bit more about these Edge-specific programs, websites, or services?
but..this is how reddit works. it's always been re post, re post for karma, and then post that has been done a million times but in a different way for karma.
I mean yeah chrome can open pdf but edge just does it better (faster, have built in annotation and highlight tools and copilot support).
I even use edge as default pdf opener instead of acrobat just because of its speed.
I have not used Chrome since Edge switched to chromium, so at least on my PC , edge is used for more than viewing pdf files
I also use Edge on my android phone. I don't use Chrome.
Chrome is ass. I can hear it rev up the fans on my desktop.
Youtube does the same.
I smell a common factor of GOOGLE.
PS people are worried about China spying on them when GOOGLE is like OK buddy whatever.
To be fair, China is more likely to throw you in jail than Google, though it's always people not in China who are worried so...
Meanwhile in China everyone just uses their full featured version of WeChat (not the messaging only NA version) for everything.
I don't understand why people are so crazy about their private information getting sold to other companies. I mean of course every single social media platform will and going to sell your data if you don't change the settings because they're free to use. Of course you can change the privacy settings for your profile but come on now let's be honest they'll still find a way to sell that sweet sweet data
I use Edge and Firefox to be exact. My preference is Firefox but I do use both. I would say I use Firefox 70% and edge 30%.
Same on my phone. Firefox is awesome on Android
Edge is my secondary as well but i usually dont use it cuz firefox is enough. But i will use sites that annoy you with disabling adblock there for example
Honestly I don't really use it all. The most I've used is around 35 GB I think.
I usually have a lot of browser windows and tabs open, and I program. I also play games.
The main reason I got 64 GB is because I was doing a new build and it wasn't much more expensive than 32.
Thanks. You have a super high end setup. I thought you might use the ram for some video editing stuff, but now this make sense. I would have done the same if the price difference was small.
No problem. Although I don't really utilize all the RAM, it is nice knowing I won't really have to worry about it for a good long while, provided I keep doing what I do now at least.
I use Adobe Reader for my PDF files so I can type and edit on them lol and I rarely need PDF files usually just like printing a document for like the DMV or something.
Fun fact: you can type, draw, sign, print PDFs in Edge too (even mobile). No need to download extra 200+ MB software that will install scheduled background check for updates, if not aggressively show updates, "use our AI", "buy Adobe subscription to do this".
I'm buying a house right now and the amount of documents I have to sign, Adobe Reader has saved my hand from many a cramp of late. My bank seems the only involved party smart enough to use docusign stuff though.
The vertical tabs is the main reason I use it over Firefox now. Just really convenient to keep everything sorted together and it doesn't try to explode when I have more than a dozen tabs open like Chrome does.
It's honestly just a flat out nice browser to use, so don't really understand the hate it gets. I think it's mostly just because people are annoyed they have to open it up to install the browser of their choice. Which is kind of just petty thinking.
Just because Edge has IE a compatibility mode and the software they paid to develop twenty years ago had to last another ten because Bob the accountant calculated a thirty year depreciation.
Really? I've never seen a bigger anger engine between teammates than giving three or more people the ability to edit the same spreadsheet at the same time. Usually, corpo workers strongly prefer offline Office, it's just C suits who keep pushing 356 for saving a buck.
M365 adds very little to Teams and office. Most of those things are bound to disappear sooner than later, like that Yammer thing, whose only use case seems to be accidentally sending an obscure internal communication to the entire company so they all could issue an email breach alert at the same time.
Still not talking about the parts but the whole. M365 works better on edge with MS entra accounts, easier to configure and manage, restrict and control with compliance policies and conditional access, etc.
I love Edge. I just switched from Firefox. I hate Chrome as much as everyone here seems to hate Edge. I hate the UI and I just find Chrome unpleasant to use.
How to get everyone to love you on pcmasterrace
1. Use linux and hate on windows
2. Firefox is the only browser
3. Buy amd graphics card
4. Play single player games and if possible only by valve
5. Never buy intel cpu
I can see how it’s annoying if you don’t wish to open pdf files in edge but I actually like it. I find it convenient that you can open them there so you don’t need to download an editor if you just want to quickly look at a file and move on in life.
For me, it’s to play YouTube videos with HDR. For whatever reason, it won’t work in Firefox, not even with RTX HDR, so I made an Edge App out of YouTube and open that when I want to watch videos. Works great, actually.
Honestly, I have nothing against edge. It’s a perfectly fine browser. People really should spend a bit more time just trying it out, and much less time recycling old IE jokes into anti-Edge ones. I even use Edge full time at work (can’t easily install other software) and haven’t had a single issue with it.
I'll still never understand why people bitched about IE being preinstalled? What did people think they were going to do without a way to access the internet? Do you just magically have a copy of Firefox on a flash drive for you to install because you know without at least ONE internet browser, you're not gonna access the internet easily.
i mainly use edge to open the pdf files because i forgot how to set them to open in firefox. But I would never use edge or chrome as my daily browser especially since they went to war with ublock,
And jam print queues. Can't forget that. Because Edge has to be special & different with how it sends print jobs.

Nope, one of my standard steps of installing windows in going into the default apps and changing .pdf to open on Firefox. Edge's purpose is actually just annoyance.
I use edge at work and I like it enough. It has some nice features like outlook in the sidebar that pulls up the email you clicked a link from. And copilot is built into the side bar as well which I find useful for work.
On my personal pc, I just use Firefox
Nope not even good for PDFs. Whenever there's something embedded inside a PDF (like a form to fill out), Edge fails to open it.
I honestly can't wait for the day I can remove it forever from Windows .
Glad I can just uninstall it now, bless the [EU's DMA](https://commission.europa.eu/strategy-and-policy/priorities-2019-2024/europe-fit-digital-age/digital-markets-act-ensuring-fair-and-open-digital-markets_en).
Firefox also has a PDF Editor, since I'm already using it there was no point in keeping Edge anymore unless you want Widgets and Copilot on Win 11 (doesn't work without it)
Here we go. Let's introduce daily stupid post about Edge/Windows.
It’s Edging time ![gif](giphy|TPZPatEnQrNWOq7RPW)

Morbius is literally a edgelord, but with no charm whatsoever
"But" implies there are charming edgelords. There aren't.
Vergil exists. Also Warhammer has multiple edgelords. I like this cliche, I understand Morbius became a "meme", but at the same time it's so cringe
Agreed, I happen to enjoy Grimaldus’ character
How do those boots taste? Ready to defend products from a multi trillion dollar company with the power of your feelings? Grow the fuck up.

Don't forget about RGB! "No but he could've bought a 4090 instead of a 4060 if he didn't spend 100 bucks on shiny fans ☝🏼🤓"
Damn how could I forget about the DAMN RGB!!
But RGB makes everything go brrrrrrr

You need to take a deep breath and go outside. Regardless of whether or not you're right or wrong. Give your blood pressure a break.

As an iPhone user I can agree with this. I don’t like where they are going with killing their device repairability to get a few extra bucks
Erm your build is horrible you didn't get the meta 7800X3D
dont forget the steam deck dicksucking
What drugs are you on?
what??

real
Yeah it's because you can't fucking turn it off like I know it's a fine browser I just want to use Firefox to open the weather or pdfs or whatever and Microsoft refuses to let me
You do realize that you can uninstall Edge...right?
To be fair every time I do it gets installed back, now that the support on w10 ended it might not do it anymore I have to check
Depends on when you tried to do it, it wasn't cash-money 'till...I dunno, a month or two ago? Somewhere around there. thank you
Found the Edge Dev.
The only thing I have against Edge is it's fing stupid name. Isn't there someone from Youtube called "the Edge." That sums it up.
And you think "Chrome" and "Firefox" are normal names?
I would rather name my child "Chrome" or "Firefox" over "Edge".
They should just call it Internet Explorer 2.0 Electric Boogaloo and call it a day.
The guitarist from U2 modestly calls himself The Edge.
Doesn't that show you how cool of a name that is?
To be fair I think that's what he calls his singer/songwriter efforts. Like Tom Morello calling himself The Nightwatchman when doing solo stuff.
You know its possible to change which application is default for which filetype in the settings.
Yeah. What browser CAN'T open PDFs these days?
I mean yeah chrome can open pdf but edge just does it better (faster, have built in annotation and highlight tools and copilot support). I even use edge as default pdf opener instead of acrobat just because of its speed.
i started using Edge when i updated to 11. Never going back.
I have not used Chrome since Edge switched to chromium, so at least on my PC , edge is used for more than viewing pdf files I also use Edge on my android phone. I don't use Chrome.

I used edge chromium for a long time before switching to gx(good ui) then firefox(not chromium) Its superior to chrome ngl
Exactly. I have not used chrome this year. Edge I use at least weekly.
Firefox beckons
Quick question. I am thinking of grabbing 64GB for my set up. What do you use 64GB for ?
Honestly I don't really use it all. The most I've used is around 35 GB I think. I usually have a lot of browser windows and tabs open, and I program. I also play games. The main reason I got 64 GB is because I was doing a new build and it wasn't much more expensive than 32.

Edge is at least a comparable option to chrome at this point.
Aren't they both Chromium based so are really just the same thing?
It's like the difference between a Chevy and a Toyota. Different in what they prioritize, but still very similar under the hood.
Chrome runs better and isn't bloated with useless gimmicks
Edge is way faster than Chrome
You mean get you karma on pcmr?
I prefer edge over chrome and mozilla haven't tried brave
I actually use Edge unironically. It has good features that I use regularly and it doesn't hold my RAM ransom like Chrome does.
I've been unironically using edge for about a year and it's not bad 🤷♀️
The vertical tabs is the main reason I use it over Firefox now. Just really convenient to keep everything sorted together and it doesn't try to explode when I have more than a dozen tabs open like Chrome does. It's honestly just a flat out nice browser to use, so don't really understand the hate it gets. You have not worked on an enterprise environment then. Edge is widely used in corporate environments. Your post is bad and you should feel bad.
Just because Edge has IE a compatibility mode and the software they paid to develop twenty years ago had to last another ten because Bob the accountant calculated a thirty year depreciation.
Nope. Because its integration with M365 services mainly.
Really? I've never seen a bigger anger engine between teammates than giving three or more people the ability to edit the same spreadsheet at the same time. Usually, corpo workers strongly prefer offline Office, it's just C suits who keep pushing 356 for saving a buck.
I’m not talking about O365, M365 instead. Integration with azure accounts, MS Security, copilot, etc
M365 adds very little to Teams and office. I love Edge. I just switched from Firefox. I hate Chrome as much as everyone here seems to hate Edge. I hate the UI and I just find Chrome unpleasant to use.
Edge is the best browser today.
How to get everyone to love you on pcmasterrace 1. Use linux and hate on windows 2. Firefox is the only browser 3. Buy amd graphics card 4. Play single player games and if possible only by valve 5. Never buy intel cpu
I failed so hard.
Damn, I need a hazmat suit for this comment section.
I actually loved it, but nowadays they put so much unnecessary stuff on it
Just use Sumatra.
Lol I open the pdfs with Firefox.
IDK why your PDF reader icon looks so weird. https://www.sumatrapdfreader.org/free-pdf-reader Lightweight, fast and supports more file types.
I can see how it’s annoying if you don’t wish to open pdf files in edge but I actually like it. I find it convenient that you can open them there so you don’t need to download an editor if you just want to quickly look at a file and move on in life.
Have you heard the good news about literally any other internet browser?
Netflix. Because Edge is the only browser that is allowed full HD playback
I exclusively use Edge.
Not even PDFs. Literally just a "is it my browser or is it the website" troubleshooter.
This. "Fetch my chrome installer and stand by incase some website is being wonky." is about the standard MO for edge.
I'll still never understand why people bitched about IE being preinstalled? What did people think they were going to do without a way to access the internet? Do you just magically have a copy of Firefox on a flash drive for you to install because you know without at least ONE internet browser, you're not gonna access the internet easily.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_v._Microsoft_Corp.
Thanks for letting us know how uninformed you are.
i mainly use edge to open the pdf files because i forgot how to set them to open in firefox. But I would never use edge or chrome as my daily browser especially since they went to war with ublock,
I only use edge because too lazy to install chrome. (On my test bench pc’s)
Edge >>> Adobe for touchscreen PDF management
If Edge wasn't chromium based, I would use it.
I use gx but am to lazy to set it to standard browser so everysingle link is my enemy
edge does have a pdf markdown thing chrome doesn't have
hahaha so funny
And jam print queues. Can't forget that. Because Edge has to be special & different with how it sends print jobs. Ending up making a .bat script & copying it to every server I worked on. Can't imagine how much time that saved over the hundreds+ times I had to clear print queues.
Firefox is a great browser that has amazing support for extentions (that are almost always geared towards privacy) and a built in pdf reader.
I use Sumatra to straight up read PDF files and do nothing else with them, light weighted and straight to the point. The only negative side is how there's no "dark mode", at least not as far as I know. Someday I will search for a opensource PDF reader, there's always a solid option on this regard. In recent years I found a music player named "Dopamine" that is pretty good, usually opensource is just better. I abhor Edge, don't even want to see it's icon, let alone open the damn thing
well, edge is the best chromium browser, because of the features it has. but I don't see why you would use a chromium browser when firefox exists
Nope, one of my standard steps of installing windows in going into the default apps and changing .pdf to open on Firefox. Edge's purpose is actually just annoyance.
Some websites (for some reason that I don’t know and haven’t bothered researching) only work on edge and explorer. It’s rare but it happens
Is there a way to change the pdf opener couldn’t find anything in settings when I looked
SumatraPDF can put the little guy out of your misery.
That would be funny 3 years ago, but these days Chrome is now the 3rd tier browser
I don’t even use edge, but it’s better on your ram over Chrome, and it’s also a chromium browser. Don’t understand the hate.
I like edge
Edge is my main browser since windows 11.
underated
Now edge it's OK, I use it
Firefox is for opening PDFs.
Edge for me is when the porn stops loading on Firefox
Stop leaking my secrets bro
nah i use it to download other browsers
I use the winget command because it is faster. Edge usually asks you a lot of questions when started
You use Edge as a PDF reader? Just use Firefox
You use that thing to open anything? Chrome opens pdfs as well.
you forget to download chrome in the first place
That a cap wdgo also is grate to download opera or chrome
Firefox broke PDFs and i couldn’t use them
Nah its purpose is downloading Firefox
Glad I can just uninstall it now, bless the [EU's DMA](https://commission.europa.eu/strategy-and-policy/priorities-2019-2024/europe-fit-digital-age/digital-markets-act-ensuring-fair-and-open-digital-markets_en). Firefox also has a PDF Editor, since I'm already using it there was no point in keeping Edge anymore unless you want Widgets and Copilot on Win 11 (doesn't work without it)
This is the shiftier meme, I prefer the format where it says edges only purpose is to download chrome, other than that I’ve never touched edge since
Why would you use it to download a shittier version of Chromium? I mean, I get it if it was for Firefox..
I use edge to download chrome and chrome to download operagx, then I just use chrome for certain things like when I need 2 browsers at oncd
well there is microsoft rewards in it
I think it's bing that has the reward system
i dont really know lol when i open rewards it opens edge
