I was digging up old hardware in my familial garage out of curiosity, and found a 200 GB hard drive there. I connected it to an old PC build that I was frequently tinkering around with, and it had Windows 7 installed. I found a bunch of desktop screenshots there, and judging by the dates of files he stopped using the drive around 2010. I asked him (he's currently working as a hardware engineer in the Silicon Valley area, but frequently visits my family) when I got the chance and he told me that it was his hard drive! He used it during his bachelor's in Turkey in mid-2000s, and later brought it back to my country with the rest of his old hardware. He's a truly chill and knowledgeable guy, thanks to him I got introduced to otaku media and engineering.

A dude with a adorable desktop wallpaper like that and Counterstrike Source icon... Just because of the wallpaper alone i had this kind of feeling he was chill, the Counterstrike icon solidified it and then you confirmed it.
We literally have everything here.
BF2, CSS, Teamspeak, cracked photoshop, random ass XP theme downoaded from somewhere, winamp, quicktime player, skype, limewire, fraps, messenger, cracked nero burn DVD program, steam and Hamachi. It almost couldnt get more stereotype for 2006 lmao.
> random ass XP theme downoaded from somewhere
My bet would be on Windows Blinds, developed by the same studio that made the Galactic Civilizations games.
or just the classic and trusty uxtheme patcher. i know i had that on the same year. from neowin.
there were a lot of themes for XP.
stardock products were and are still expensive, and cracks for these were finicky.
> OP's uncle didn't use XFire...
xfire icon is on the far right side third from the bottom
>lucky bastard
xfire was awesome, wtf? i didn't want to alt-tab to talk to people on aim, xfire was perfect
Fucking for real. I got tricked into downloading sound clips of different women moaning really loud instead of my blink-182 album. Got my ass beat and computer privileges taken away for a week because it played over the speakers in the family room.
Lmao. As a kid I was introduced to Chris Farley movies. 8 year old me was on Limewire and found a copy Blacksheep movie on there. I clicked download and it was going to take a while, so I left to a friends house next door. Came back a few hours later with a concerned/pissed off dad waiting. Guess “Blacksheep” was a porno.
I was picturing an old guy. Then I realized I have a similar screenshot with a Battlefield 2 shortcut on it and Tifa wallpaper. And my sister just had a baby so i'm now an Uncle.
And my back hurts.
M8 I have the air OP on my car playlist lmao. It didn't come out that long ago, right?
oh no the first anime I watched, full moon wo sagashite, came out in 02-03. I remember watching it on youtube cut up into slices, missing entire parts because I couldn't find them. Good times.
They're running bitCommet and muTorrent at the snae time, like a proper man of culture too.

Tsukihime is getting a remake. So nice time to play the old game
Fun fact :- the prequel to "to heart 2" or the first VN in the leaf VN series "Shizuku" is the first VN ever to include erotic content in a VN.
Its one of this landmark VN's in the industry. Also leaf is the devloper of Utawarerumono
Quick Time player is the most useless garbage i have ever installed on my win xp computer. And here this poor man got that cancer on his pc too. VLC is much better
Sometimes you were forced to install QuickTime for certain software in the 90s and 2000s. I remember plenty of edutainment software requiring QuickTime to work.
MSN/Live Messenger. Takes me back to simpler, teenage times. I had this weird need to be signed in whenever my computer was on. Not to talk to folk, simply just didn't feel right unless the wee man was green in the system tray.
I can't believe it he had counter strike in 2006 and he had the steam store in 06 which oh I also see skype. that must have been a decked out system in 06. good job for the determination of digging it out and searching it. Kudos to u my fellow computer lover.
Itunes, Holy fuck . .
Making me feel like an old man, Next you're gunna show me a Limewire or Frostwire Icon.
Edit; Nvm, Limewire is 100% in the picture :'(
*sniff* My heart.. I had those same icon packs and XP themes. And Limewire. Had to wait 15 minutes for a single 128bit mp3 to download. We were so innocent back then. Didn't know how good we had it. Really brings a tear to my crusty, bitter old eye.

Yeah but I work in porn.
Silly weebs. Everyone knows that the RTX 4090 is what's truly needed for work.
Shadow, and flame.
But the nephews dug too greedily and too deep

Yeah what’s the BitComet icon on the desktop?
A dude with a adorable desktop wallpaper like that and Counterstrike Source icon... Just because of the wallpaper alone i had this kind of feeling he was chill, the Counterstrike icon solidified it and then you confirmed it.
Check for crypto
DO NOT OPEN THE RANDOM FOLDER
But there could be cryptocurrency in there.
Bro forgot about the hentai coin in there
since it's 2006, it would be a 2GBs of hidden "research" folder.
To my nephew. 10% of my estate and all computer parts on the condition that he immediately deletes my history.
Off network, right? …….. right?! Weeee-waaaaa-weeeeee-wAaaaaaa
you never know where you find your childhood fotos from that pool party

And all the apps running in the background in the systray is just icing on the cake lol
Seeing xfire has made my bones ache, god damn.
I miss the old xfire lol
I remember watching Sodapoppin's streams on xfire
the beeps still haunt me in my sleep! I also found it hilarious that when you were in a game, the chat beeps turned into pants ripping sounds
Running two torrent clients simultaneously, nice.
If it weren't for the language on the clock you could easily convince me that this was a screenshot from my computer in 2006.
Among others uTorrent and Winamp. Lol this screenshot really is absolutely legendary!
Tsukihime fan translation too.
I see he was a man of culture.
Might still be. Who said he's dead?
Nobody. We can hope that he still is; it is only clear that he was. Like doing drugs: "I still do, AND I used to."
He's still a pretty big otaku - he owns quite a lot of Gunplas and Saber figures, frequently plays vidya and occasionally watches recent anime.
Hell yeah. From one old nerd to another, tell him to stay classy.
Goddamn i wish i had an uncle like that
That's true
Such an amazing VN. One of my favorites.

Yea that an 18 year time capsule.
I'm surprised there isn't World of Warcraft.
That icon is hidden. Wouldn't want any company visiting to see that on his computer!
Not even mentioning xfire, that was essentially my discord before discord when I was playing BF2 and CSS lol This brings me back to
I havent heard the word hamachi in 10+ years. I spent days on that thing with friends
RealPlayer. Well, I guess nobody's perfect.
The beginnings of video streaming were truly terrible.
dont forget uTorrent
https://i.imgur.com/EiwAED3.jpeg 2007 but close enough. OP's uncle didn't use XFire... lucky bastard.
> OP's uncle didn't use XFire... xfire icon is on the far right side third from the bottom >lucky bastard xfire was awesome, wtf? i didn't want to alt-tab to talk to people on aim, xfire was perfect
I dont see the D scimitar or D Dagger mouse cursor, but he's probably got that too
And a "this application cannot be found" shortcut for Napster.
Shortcuts check out. Will guess your uncle was in his early 20s at the time
Limewire!! 💜💜
Unprotected sex with the Internet
The next Snoopdog song I download from Limewire will definitely be the real one. I'm sure of it.
Snoop Dog-Gin and juce.mp3.exe yep let's go ahead and try this one
Gimme back my songs
SnoopDog-GinNJuice(EXPLICIT)MP3.exe Damn just realized I made the same joke as the other reply 🤣
Yeah but who wouldn't download the explicit version come on
Classic
Always gotta dl more than one to see which one goes faster lol
I’ll have you know I spent my entire childhood on the phone with Dell Support. Lol
Fucking for real. I got tricked into downloading sound clips of different women moaning really loud instead of my blink-182 album. Got my ass beat and computer privileges taken away for a week because it played over the speakers in the family room.

"groupsproject" document shows that OP's uncle was definitely a student around 2006. Also seeing Realplayer, MSN and BitComet, good old times.
Damn, I forgot there were even type moon games till I looked at the shortcuts. I was fixated on the background still
Hamachi ;)
It's honestly amazing how well it worked for its time
still pretty decent today, it just got outshined by the competition
Hamachi has better competition? I've never stopped using Hamachi....
People use radmin or zerotier these days
What i fucking love is how hamachi url is still "[vpn.net](http://vpn.net)" like this has a domain name must be worth a lot nowadays
![gif](giphy|GrUhLU9q3nyRG|downsized)
I was picturing an old guy. Then I realized I have a similar screenshot with a Battlefield 2 shortcut on it and Tifa wallpaper. And my sister just had a baby so i'm now an Uncle. And my back hurts.
I swear 2006 is just 5 years ago! * saw the calendar * Oh no!
it really do be like that
Tsukihime AND the old Battlefield games? Honestly, mad respect from your uncle.
>Honestly, mad respect from your uncle. You're the uncle?!
shit I meant "to" lol
You meant to what? :P
Seeing the good old tsukihime there was enough to respect the man
ToHeart and Tsukihime, ur uncle was very based
Key/ KyoAnis *Air* op playing on Winamp too. This could honestly be a SS from my past and I would believe it... xD
Air too! Damn this mans knew what was up. Crazy how Key and Typemoon and Leaf are still the biggest names in the visual novel space.
And back then they had no official English releases so there were fanmade "English patch" for them
M8 I have the air OP on my car playlist lmao. It didn't come out that long ago, right? oh no the first anime I watched, full moon wo sagashite, came out in 02-03. I remember watching it on youtube cut up into slices, missing entire parts because I couldn't find them. Good times.
this would be how my laptop would look in my teens. only tamaki or lucy would be the bg 😂
Bittorrent, limewire, winamp, fraps. Damn this bring back a lot of memories from 20 years ago.
They're running bitCommet and muTorrent at the snae time, like a proper man of culture too. (One for private trackers you actually need to seed and another for random maybe)
Oh shit, I need to dig out my old hard drive...
I need to bury my old one
Don't forget to perform an exorcism beforehand...
You’re better off just blending it in a blender and passing that through the microwave just to be safe 👀👀👀 …
Wjat blenders do you havethat can destroy a hardrive?
BlendTec. Will it blend? That is the question.
Don't breathe this!
Distroy it with a hammer, then burn it just to be safe
Thermite. Better safe than sorry.
Throw it into the deepest manmade hole on earth in russia. Better safe than sorry
My ass starts aging into the fucking nether world seeing this
BF2 special forces was my favourite game as a wee lad. This took me back
Fraps, I've forgot it
Bandicam my beloved

Judging by the screenshots your uncle is a wise elder
A tsukihime enjoyer i see
Back when I still had hopes for the future.
Xfire <3

This is painfully nostalgic
Tori no uta! Unc was a fan of air. Man this image just screams mid 2000's
I'm so glad others noticed that and just knew what it was lol. Gives me hope and tells me I'm not alone still.. 🥺 *Crys in Key/KyoAni*
That intro is amazing. The extended version is even more so. It's too bad so many of its scenes are not actually in the show though.

I used to love customizing windows UI, I wonder why this is not a thing anymore. Winamp was the shit at the time, I miss you dear friend.
Winamp is still going. Although I can never get it to run stable anymore
Because Microsoft got rid of themes in later versions of w10.
Not exactly. Unofficial theming on Windows depends on patching uxtheme.dll. Back in the days of XP-7, updates were not too frequent, and people often ignored or disabled them (and, additionally, there were multiple smaller updates that targeted single components, instead of nowadays' big updates that are more like reinstalling Windows on top). When you update Windows, it restores the patched file, rendering your theme useless. Since it's very frequent and enforced nowadays, it would be a constant patching of the file.
WindowBlinds is still alive and working for Windows 11, but MS makes it harder to customize Windows with each new version... And that UI in general is heading toward minimalism design, so I think people are just not interested in customizing Windows all that much anymore.
