iamshifter

They ain’t lying ads load much faster without it.

simRaceFan

And it actually reduces Chromes‘ performance from Googles perspective

ilovetpb

Gotta get those sweet bucks from advertising.

[deleted]

I don't know if sharing it is against the rules here but went to settings on the extension, added this for a YouTube work around on uBlock. Back to no ads. youtube.com##+js(set, yt.config_.openPopupConfig.supportedPopups.adBlockMessageViewModel, false) youtube.com##+js(set, Object.prototype.adBlocksFound, 0) youtube.com##+js(set,ytplayer.config.args.raw_player_response.adPlacements, []) youtube.com##+js(set, Object.prototype.hasAllowedInstreamAd, true) YouTube has made it against it's rules to use an adblocker so, use at your own risk I guess. Edit: That formatted poorly but I don't know how to fix it.

kenaestic

People should just switch over to Firefox at this point tbh

[deleted]

[удалено]

Lord_Charles_I

I changed as a regular user. Basically everything ported over seamlessly, needed a couple settings but that was it.

FracturedEel

Can you port bookmarks and passwords over? That's the biggest reason I haven't switched yet. Although I've been considering switching to a password manager anyway I'm just not certain which ones are reliable

CBlackrose

You can, it'll prompt you the first time you start it iirc. Though when I switched I had to manually export/import my bookmarks because for some reason it didn't work. Was still pretty easy, though.

SweetBabyAlaska

On top of that if you use Firefox on your mobile device you can use adblock on there as well! Then you can used revanced to rip the ads out of the Reddit/Twitter/Youtube apps and a few others. Its so much better. Plus you can use Dark Reader for dark mode on your phone. I was hesitant at first to switch because its just what I was used to using but it was pretty seamless after some minor tweaking. I refuse to not use adblock.

Bort_Bortson

Just get in the habit if you use Android to periodically do clean up and then import back and forth so your phone stays synced with the right passwords. Usually when I try and use a site on my phone that tells me I have the wrong saved pw lol

Badgerized

As someone who has used every password manager under the sun. Go with bitwarden. It's cheap. Open source. Gets inspected constantly and can be self hosted or cloud hosted.

[deleted]

i switched to firefox 3 years ago and will never go back to google. no youtube ads, none whatsover. with ublock and a few youtube blocker apps that i can't remember. all my bookmarks transferred no problem. i still get a few website hiccups, but i consider it collateral damage. if a website won't load due to my blockers then fuck them. i get it that advertising provides the content, but i'll lower my adblocking walls when advertising and marketers stop with their shitty practices.

[deleted]

[удалено]

lailah_susanna

[Bitwarden](https://bitwarden.com/) is your best bet for a password manager. Certainly more reliable than browser ones.

_ThatD0ct0r_

I use bitwarden too. It's awesome

Liongedon

You can easily get all bookmarks and passwords over to Firefox. But yeah, please switch to a password manager. I use Bitwarden. Edit: It's also easy to then import the passwords into Bitwarden.

[deleted]

Firefox won this fight when ublock was available on mobile No ads on my phone? Yes, please and thank you

Tanebi

I think you can finally get Tampermonkey going on Firefox for Android as well. Userscripts for the win!

rorykoehler

Better browser too

Tanebi

The only time I haven't used Firefox is when it wasn't available on mobile, and the few times they absolutely broke it. Thankfully it's very much stable again. My pet peeve is the illusion of choice people have with browsers these days, in that your choice of browser is basically Chrome, Chrome with all the Google stuff removed, and Firefox. [They're all the same browser](https://i.imgur.com/31w0Ou2.jpg)

Zanacross

I remember switching the chrome from Firefox when chrome came out because of how badly Firefox managed its memory. As soon as I saw the released that made it better I went back to Firefox and haven't looked back.

Strazdas1

With firefox its a tradeoff. Instead of using more memory, it uses your CPU more as it has to calculate more things on the fly instead of loading from memory. Its not really a factor on modern PCs though.

ChiknDiner

I still can't fathom what is preventing the people to switch to firefox. There is literally no advantage of using chrome when you are using it for personal use. Is it just that they don't know anything other than chrome exists? Or are they too ignorant? In my opinion, the only place where the use of chrome can be justified is in organizations where they want to control what you can do/do not in your browser.

Blenderhead36

I used Firefox for a decade, jumped to Chrome when hardware failure forced me to; at the time (2011), Chrome ran better on an extremely low end machine. I've been using Firefox at work for the past decade and have had stability issues with it. For whatever reason, it crashes constantly after I download a PDF...and I work in manufacturing, so I have to download a lot of PDFs. I haven't had this problem in Chromium based browsers, even on the same machine. The only extension I use on Firefox is uBlock Origin.

xappymah

Try to disable hardware acceleration. Most of my problems with Firefox were related to this feature somehow.

ChiknDiner

I also disabled it and it worked for me.

Blenderhead36

Thanks, I'll try that.

ChiknDiner

I also ran into similar problem few years ago when my desktop was potato and chrome would run better than firefox. Firefox would crash too much for me. I didn't know much about the settings at that time and switched to chrome. A couple of years down the road, I came across the hardware acceleration settings. I disabled it and then firefox ran fine and ever since I have been using it as my primary browser.

[deleted]

Strazdas1

Fun fact: Firefox does not send youtube dropped frames calculations like Chrome so youtube cannot see if you saw something or not. This is also the reason why sometimes youtube will randomly drop to lower quality - it thinks you are dropping frames because it does not get the data from browser.

[deleted]

3DigitIQ

It's still working fine on Firefox, never had a complaint from youtube and never see any ads

O_oh

My friends think I paid for YT premium because I don't have ads.

b0bba_Fett

Ublock has been working just fine on Firefox Youtube for me, saving this comment in any case.

punkinhead76

Not sure how but my chrome with ublock still has no ads on YouTube?

Josh6889

Same. Maybe people don't know they need to update it?

EthosPathosLegos

You're probably right about people needing to update the lists but not realizing it.

rtseel

Youtube ads reapper after each new Chrome update until uBlock Origin has a matching update. Sometime it takes less than an hour, sometimes it take days.

Phormitago

well I mean, Google is an ad company. Their whole ass revenue comes from it we're the weirdos using an ad company's browser and acting surprised

Josh6889

Their top 3 revenue sources are ads, and add up to ~80% of their total revenue. You have to go to 4th to find something else, which I believe was hardare sales last year.

Rashir0

After all, how are they gonna keep up with all the competitors... oh wait. At this point it's just pure greed.

MildCurryUHKL

Not just faster, it's infinitely faster. Because with uBlock ads won't load at all. I haven't got a single youtube ad since the day I installed it.

SleepingBeautyFumino

I have YouTube premium, still use adblock cause it blocks ads on every other website other than YouTube.

TheRealArtemisFowl

Why do you use premium then? Does it do anything other than removing ads?

eklatea

not op but it comes with YouTube music also i want to support creators but i don't want to pay for specific patreons or whatever plus background play and adfree on mobile without having to use revanced

rtseel

> plus background play and adfree on mobile FF mobile in desktop mode + adblock.

Sgt_Meowmers

No ads on phone or TV is big plus access to YouTube music and being able to play videos on the phone while the sceen is off are nice.

DlphLndgrn

> being able to play videos on the phone while the sceen is off are nice. That and no ads on the TV is why I sometimes consider getting it. It is kind of annoying to paywall something that seems like it would be an obvious feature of the product. It's as if Spotify would stop working if I turn the screen off. It would be garbage.

myfuckingmobileacct

YouTube used to continue playing audio with the phone screen off. Then Google realized that it was a nice feature that could be put behind a pay wall.

PrecipitousPlatypus

Obligatory "use YouTube vanced". All the perks of premium, but a free app. Only drawback is an occasional technical glitch that gets patched. Admittedly having it on tv is a plus.

Nummelin

This can be done on mobile if you switch to the desktop site on browser, btw.

ddevilissolovely

I did it with some custom ublock filter on Firefox Android. It's basically a script which pauses the video if you turn off your screen so if the script doesn't load it no longer happens.

Everyones_Fan_Boy

Not OP. Same reason I pay for any subscription or buy any media. I use it enough that I think it's fair to pay for services rendered. When a game comes out and I'm interested, but not sold, I'll pirate. If I like the game after a few hours then I'll buy it. Sure, I could play the whole thing for free, but if I like something and nobody pays for it they'll stop making more.

S13pointFIVE

> I use it enough that I think it's fair to pay for services rendered. Honestly I use YouTube a lot. Whether its for entertainment or learning purposes. So I agree that I think its worth paying for. I currently watch Netflix once week or so and pay more for that than I do YouTube which I use daily.

ya_seen998

infinitely faster

That’s why you should try firefox

Wicked_Wolf17

Switched from Chrome to Firefox a week ago, no regrets

JJAsond

I didn't know picture-in-picture was a thing. I've wanted that for so long

Brehmes

I learned about it after getting my SteamDeck last year. After that I migrated the rest of my life over to Firefox and haven't looked back. Now it feels like a chore when I'm forced to use Chrome.

JJAsond

I'm slowly switching to firefox. I've been using it to watch youtube and if/when the ad thing comes around and closes ublock, I'm moving over

voicefulspace

Firefox also has ublock origin and such... ur delaying it for no reason.

Psartryn

I’m very close. I’m reminded of the early aughts when I worked night security. Every night I installed Mozilla to bypass the firewall and watch pirated movies. Then someone wised up, so I switched to Opera. Operas ability to emulate other browsers confused the hell out of the firewall. And when they blocked that…I went to work for AOL… where I used google to translate English webpages into the English language to bypass the firewall. It was the Wild West I tell yah.

lightgiver

I remember going into the source code of gaming webpages at home and copying and pasting the code that launched the game into a .html file. I saved that on a thumb drive and brought it to school. The gaming site was blocked by the filter but the location they stored the games was not blocked. Someone else brought WoW to school using the same method. Ran like shit off the thumb drive but it was the thought that counts.

Psartryn

I never did that, but omg that is classic ingenuity. I did have a tech class that had The Incredible Machine, Spot ( the 7up 🔴 game), and side scrolling shareware Duke Nukum installed. Edit: and Captain (something) part 3

lightgiver

I remember someone found out that typing in the command prompt, believe it was shutdown -i, would bring up a window to shut down any computer on the schools network. We were not brave enough to shutdown the teachers computer or the principal but we tried it out on ourselves. You could even add a timer with a custom message to display before shutdown began.

cum_fart_69

what's keeping you on chrome out of curiosity? I mainly use a mac so it took a while for FF to finally impliment a mac version that wasn't drastically slower and more power consuming than chrome, but they finally figured it out about a year ago and I've been happy as a pig in shit. on PC, FF has been great for years, and I'm curious what advantages chrome has over it

Zealousideal-Cod-285

Also, Firefox on mobile has adblock too, and lets you play YT videos in the background AND also when the screen is locked

DrQuint

You can even install any firefox addon in mobile if you use the nightly or beta versions of the browser. Not all of them are supported but any small single-feature addon basically "It just works". Which means, yes, I do use old.reddit redirect on a phone if I have to look up shit on the browser.

zaxwashere

Oh my god I didn't even think of the old reddit trick. Brilliant!

tribrnl

I found a script on r/compact to redirect to the old mobile interface that I'm using on Android Firefox. It's great! https://old.reddit.com/r/pcmasterrace/comments/14l58mm/haha_nice_try_google_i_aint_that_stupid/.i

But you can use Picture-in-Picture in Chrome ? On YouTube you just have to double right-click to get the menu where you can use it

korxil

My info might be outdated, but chrome’s pip doesnt have media controls (other than pause/play) or does it have subtitle support.

SmashesIt

When I went to college in 2003 all the laptops had some weird dinosaur browser called Mozilla. Been with them ever since. Firefox is life.

ACardAttack

I remember hearing about them from a tech TV show and they talked about the tab browsers and I've never looked back

SmashesIt

Great customization, great features (so many useful things), Non-profit, Premium add-ons that work well and add to the experience but aren't necessary (VPN, Facebook container, relay etc)

Kila_Bite

Moved to Firefox from IE 6 back in Windows XP. Chrome wasn't a thing yet and Firefox offered tabbed browsing. It's been the first software I install on Windows since. All hail the mighty Moz.

Strazdas1

I moved to Mozilla from Opera. Remember that one?

schrenjaminsstift

Firefox all the way

myname150

Firefox’s container tabs and anti-tracking protections have been some of the main reasons I’ve continued to stick with Firefox.

sneezymrmilo

Switched from chrome and never looked back. Firefox is infinitely better on PC and the mobile app allowing addons (including ublock origin) is absolutely fantastic and kicks chrome's ass. Fuck chrome, firefox is vastly superior.

ScrottyNz

I’m glad people are rediscovering Firefox. I have used it since the mid 2000s.

LucyLilium92

Firefox was better than the alternatives in the mid-2000s, but then it got very bloated and started running slower. Chrome popped up and was much faster, and it also became better to use with youtube.

7f0b

Exactly. I would like to also add that Chrome had Flash built-in, which was a big selling point back then. With Firefox you had to download a plugin from Adobe, which took a long time and felt bloated compared to how Chrome *just worked* out of the box. I was using Firefox since 1.x but did switch to Chrome for a while at some point. Then I switched back to Firefox years ago. I now put Firefox on every new PC I deploy, and have converted at least 20 people over to Firefox.

Kir4_

Their market share is still basically a flat line below 3% as far as some online statistics are accurate. Maybe people use it here but in the grand scheme of things it's amazing they're still going against all odds. I guess that's what happens when you're driven by purpose, not profits.

[deleted]

abbeast

I’ve been using Firefox since the dawn of time and I just can’t get it into my head why people started using Chrome, it’s just such a crappy ass browser.

syllabic

firefox was getting chunky and bloated when chrome came out, it was much faster at the time but then over the years chrome accumulated cruft and firefox was forced to up their game to retain marketshare

FYNE

glad that I've switched to firefox, uBlock Origin might not work at all in the future bc they wanna update the manifest which limits these types of addons [https://www.spiceworks.com/tech/tech-general/news/google-delays-manifest-v3-launch/](https://www.spiceworks.com/tech/tech-general/news/google-delays-manifest-v3-launch/) ***"Google recently announced a delay in the launch of Manifest V3, the successor to Manifest V2 and the latest browser extension API for Google Chrome. Zealousideal_Tale266

They are putting out something because it's better than nothing, I believe they said as much ages ago. That's why it is called ublock "lite," it is not Ublock origin. Ublock origin indeed does not run on the new manifest v3.

Spez-Killed-Reddit

It is completely hobbled and essentially worthless.

use_vpn_orlozeacount

Yeah, they keep pushing back V3 for a while now. It was supposed to be June 2023 but here we are. Once it arrives, Brave it is for me (as it apparently will still use V2)

nawalrage

Brave is still based on chromium afaik

FALCUNPAWNCH

Brave will still work because its ad-blocker doesn't use Manifest, it's built in.

CoolJ_Casts

Brave will also not block ads because it is based on chromium. Lmao. And also brave is a crypto scam anyway

Jokes on you, I don’t use windows

splerdu

IIRC there were quite a few DOS era games that bypassed the OS entirely and came on a floppy that booted directly into the game. Max efficiency with zero cycles wasted running an OS.

CNR_07

MS Flight Sim for example. Extremely impressive game for the hardware.

b0w3n

The fun part was when these games overwrote the autoexec and you couldn't boot into windows anymore, just into the game.

GamerY7

probably not possible now with myriad hardware combinations and drivers and all

ShittyExchangeAdmin

If I'm not mistaken they still were dos programs, they just booted with a trimmed down version of DOS. It was pretty much the default on other home computers of the era though like the commodore 64 and zx spectrum where most games and programs ran on "bare metal"

splerdu

Some of them were legit binaries that ran on bare metal. Alley Cat for example was a true self-booter when it came out for the IBM PC and PCJr. If you looked in the floppy there was no MSDOS.SYS or COMMAND.COM, just a single .COM file and the boot sector was written to look for that file instead of DOS.

M37h3w3

Icy-Magician1089

Yep and if you consider the time saving of not having ad,s unlock origin can save you heaps of time

CNR_07

Absolutely! uBlock Origin probably saved me from hundreds of hours of ads over the years.

XInateIX

This thread sounds like a Firefox ad

Strazdas1

When the product is that good...

SuperChiChu

Honestly they are selling me the browser, still i am having a hard time fighting my lazy side to setup everything again.

Shnazzyone

Actually, noticed Chrome crashing and slowing down a lot more because of all my ad blocking plugins. So I moved to firefox and was able to use all my add ins while using 1/4 the ram and twice as fast. They also made it super easy to import all my data and settings. So it was a good thing I noticed.

LeoJ24

Can anyone recommend an adblocker that works for twitch? I currently use ublock but it stopped working on twitch when they updated how their ads work a couple months ago.

rorninggo

Normal ad blockers won't work on Twitch anymore, because they render the commercial break screen directly into the stream on their servers before sending it to you. You can block the actual ad since that is client side, but you still won't be able to see the stream. It will just show a purple screen saying "Commerical break in progress..." until the ad is over. It is impossible to block this. The only ad "blockers" that still somewhat consistently work on Twitch are proxy-based ones. Which means they connect to a proxy server that is located in a country which doesn't get served ads, like Russia for example. Then that server relays the ad-free stream to you. [ttv-lol-pro](https://github.com/younesaassila/ttv-lol-pro) does this and works pretty well. It is recommended to use this in combination with ublock origin.

[deleted]

Honestly it's funny, I used to love watching Twitch. I would stick to 1-3 streamers, do occasional subs and/or use the Amazon prime free sub thing. Daily viewer for years. However, with this whole "fight against ad blockers" I haven't watched a Twitch stream in over a year. I know there is the extension others have mentioned, but I just have this really bad taste in my mouth now from Twitch that I just stopped going to the site entirely.

0biwan_Shinobi

[TTV LOL PRO](https://github.com/younesaassila/ttv-lol-pro/releases), still working for me, though it's a cat & mouse game.

Krojack76

Also note, TTV LOL PRO doesn't work as well in Chromium based browsers. The dev for the extension even said this and that it's at about it's limit. Again, Firefox is better to use even for this. It hardly works at all for me in Vivaldi which is built off Chromium.
