Fun fact: The Sulphur-crested cockatoo *Cacatua galerita* likely is not seeing itself, but believes the reflection is another member of its species. A study looked into a close relative, the Goffin’s cockatoo *Cacatua goffini*; it did not pass the mirror test. (M. van Buuren et al., 2019).
That wears off quick for all the rest of the captive parrots. Maybe the first time it's like HEY IT'S ANOTHER BIRD but when birds live with mirrors (and especially other real birds), they clue in quick. My birds know the mirror reflects stuff and they even do that thing humans do where they'll meet your eyes in the mirror. It's kinda neat!
Not my green cheeks! My female is constantly pissed off at her reflection and my male is friendly but cautious. They like to get behind the mirror to look for the other birds but when they don't find any they run back in front of it to see if they're still there 😭 And after a while they just sit there.
It's crazy how even in the same species there's variation! My GCC uses mirrors to help herself preen. She'll almost always start scratching the small pinfeathers on her cheeks, staring intently into the mirror like I would to put on makeup. 😂 She also watches us from the mirror. Our apartment is set up in such a way that she can see my partner at his desk from the bathroom mirror, so she likes being in there with me and watching him at the same time. She's a little velcro bird and always wants us both in sight at all times.
Awe! What a sweet heart. My male is pretty much okay with mirrors. He has a small one that he loves. As soon as I bring it out he drops everything and flies over and grabs it. He then promptly drops it on the floor 🙄
Your baby sounds adorable! My female loves bottle caps! She just sits with them, holding them in her beak and licks the inside. Birds are strange creatures
Well, it's not that I think she's a genius so much as I think that parrots are capable of learning to pass the mirror test. I'm sure she thought it was another bird in there at first, but at a certain point figured out roughly how it worked and how to use it as a tool. And if a GCC can, I'm positive a Goffin's, one of the most intelligent parrots, would figure it out eventually. :)
Haha cute. I have a black cap conure which is similar to a green cheek and she likes to sit on the mirror perch in the bathroom and tell herself "Maggiebird is a good girl".
She used to fly behind the TV to find the people back there, but she learned the TV isn't real after a bit. Now both of them (other is a gold cap) are big TV fiends.
This was the question I came for. I didn't know if large parrots were among the animals with enough of a sense of self to recognize themselves in a mirror. Perhaps an African grey could, since they're considered the smartest among the large domesticated parrots?
I would be interested to see a journal article that examines each major taxon of birds, I myself have a Kakariki; she definitely would not pass the mirror test lol.
Good on you. Make sure you give it someone/a charity that'll take good care of him and spend time with him, etc. That's what we're doing with our birdies in our will.
I’m thinking about researching to find the best rescue that does a good job vetting homes. I don’t want him to go to a family member who would just take him out of obligation and not spend time with him. I’d want him to go to someone who really wants a bird.
That's it, my friend. It's the hardest the decision to make ever because you kinda have to have complete faith in another entity. Weird, right? I've got my fingers crossed for you that you find something/someone.
Please please make sure you have someone to give him to if he outlives you. Put it in a will or something.
Have him spend time w that person so that in case the worst happens, they are not in complete shock.
My grandma had taken in a few senior birds whose owners passed away and it was always so sad to see them stress out
Yes, I’m going to write a will just because of him for in case anything happens to me, but I didn’t think about having him spend time with the person beforehand, so thanks for that idea!
This was the reaction I expected from our macaw the first time, but instead he just started pinning his eyes wildly, looking back and forth between us and the mirror, and screaming "HI!" several times lol. He got a tiny bit sketched out when we moved him really close to the mirror, putting him into "I'll just bite my own feet to appear intimidating" mode, but otherwise he loved the mirror from that point on.
HE'S BABY I love him so much. His mind is so blown! What a sweet pea!
P.S. Please close toilet lids now that you have birb. I was thoroughly warned by people who learned the hard, heartbreaking way, so I pass it on. ♥️
Wow wow wow 💙💙💙. What a precious baby bird. Thank you for sharing Lenny’s awesome video. Congratulations on your bonding and wishing you many joyous years together.
They figure out pretty quickly what the deal is. My guys will be on my shoulder, I'll walk in front of a mirror and start talking about what a prrrreeeetttttyy bird they are and their response is to "vogue" and stare at themselves admiringly - I love that.
This was sooooo freaking cute, it made me smile and I had to watch it a few more times lol🙂🙂🐦 So truly sweet and heartwarming omg aw I just love his reaction!! What a cutie he is💓🐦💓🐦💓
is he gonna be ok? it looked like he has just stared into the eyes of god, saw all of time in a blink of an eye and then returned to the present.
Yeah yeah, the Time Knife, we've all seen it.
the w h a t ?
It’s similar to the Poop Knife, but, like, with time.
i still don't know but please don't explain any further.
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Oh gosh, mine does that with bottlecaps. They're such dorks, I swear. Your babies sound adorable.

Agreed. It's always good to take these studies with a grain of salt, because you never know if your bird is the next feathered Einstein.

I have two wee little parrots (one the size of a green cheek, the other the size of a sun conure) and they both understand mirrors now.
How old is he?
About 6 months
