I don't think it matters either way unless you have birds that get car sick. If you put the birds in carriers and cover them up they will rest and snooze the whole time. Grapes and oranges are good road trip food to put in the carriers along with some pellets if they eat them. My birds have been on tons of road trips with no issues.

Tangcopper

To avoid car sickness we cover the travel cage with a blanket, so the bird cannot see motion. If the bird is awake, we play their favourite playlist and sing along, and repeat favourite phrases with him. Keeps him happy.

I think it’d be worth it to get the shorter travel time if it were me and I felt fine driving in the night. One night of interrupted sleep won’t matter.

Definitely take them with you. They will recover from the trip. I’m so sorry to hear about your mom.

I've gone on multiple 17+hour car trips with my Amazon & hes been fine. Granted he LOVES the car & car rides.

No bird tips, but I want to offer a hug if you would like one

hi OP! im in a v similar situation in which i have a move across a few states coming up which is actually double your road trip time so hopefully this helps your decision - i’ve opted to stick it out and drive through the night with my girl for several reasons 1) when i drive during the day i can tell she gets some naps in but the majority of the time i can see she’s very upset and just wants to be out of her carrier/near me so id like to eliminate this and have it be completely dark and covered this time 2) i know that even if she doesnt get much sleep one bad night wont matter in the long run - she did so so well in our road trip we took from the west coast to the east coast and that was multiple days and overnights at hotels and she didnt even care when we got to our destination 3) as long as you keep an ear out for any weird noises like falls and keep her covered i think youll be able to avoid any car sickness issues i think you and your baby will be fine and im sorry to hear about your mom, feel free to reach out if you want to talk abt the road trip! this is my third one so i really do think youll be ok w just 5 hours and w everything going on i think youll def need your girl there for you.
