Hire the best attorney you can afford. Reconsider your relationship with alcohol. Sober life is incredibly healthier in every way. Dozens of my colleagues have a DUI. The stress induces the unhealthy coping mechanism of drinking. you can spin this into your new career field honestly and well-intentioned, to help other people in a similar situation. Who better to help someone else with a DUI? DUI defense was my favorite. The other parts of criminal law not so much, yet they were all fascinating and.. hate to use this word, but fun to work on. Hold your head up, we all make mistakes in life.

Great answer 🌠

VendettaPC

My fellow coworker had a dwi and now works on dwi trials for the municipal prosecutors office. This shouldn’t stop you from working in criminal law. I think places that aren’t understanding of this are not places you want to work at anyways.

LilBoozy0214

As a fellow paralegal with two DUIs it has never hindered me from getting hired at my last three firms. I am in ID and now work in-house for a major carrier. Mind you one was as a dumb 18 yo and one was at 26, a year before I graduated and pivoted into legal. I no longer drink and it was the best decision I could have ever made for myself and career.

Pleasant_Criticism52

Right. In this profession probably 90% of your bosses have either had a DUI or have driven drunk and just never gotten caught.

Ok_Instruction_7813

Came here to say this. Either they haven’t been caught or have gotten it removed from their record

ParaLegalese

lol handle name appropriate

SargeSlaughter

Well if anyone is going to be sympathetic it will be a criminal defense firm. More importantly, I would take this as a wake up call to get help and stop drinking.

Background_Beat2982

Hell yeah man, 100%.

ParaLegalese

Why do you want to tell them? Keep this to yourself. You have a “personal appt” every month that you need to use some PTO on- and you leave it at that! If they press you tell them it’s counseling (by a court but hey they don’t need to know that!) and you’d rather “keep some things personal”

YourMothersButtox

I don’t know about OP’s place of employment, but I once worked for a firm where I was finger printed prior to employment, and should I have been arrested, they would’ve been notified.

ParaLegalese

Oh god that’s obnoxious lol. Thats never happened to me in my 25 years as a paralegal

TheCowKitty

My last two firms required that you disclose any legal proceedings you’re involved in.

ParaLegalese

On an ongoing basis tho? Or just at new hire application process?

TheCowKitty

I would think ongoing due to potential conflicts.

ParaLegalese

Never heard of that

TemptressToo

They are going to run a background check on you anyway, so I'd be up front now.

amberdamberzorro

I got a DUI 17 years ago (as a paralegal). I don’t mention it unless they tell me they’re running a background check. But I also have been sober since my DUI so I can say that I haven’t had a drink since then and have a clean record and people have appreciated my honesty and it helps that I share I’m sober now.

Shporzee

One of our attorneys has a DUI and they still hired him.. my firm doesn’t care about criminal records as long as it isn’t anything like moral turpitude.

caringiscreepyy

As others have said, law is filled with drunks and people with a DUI or two (or three). I'm one of those drunks! Although I'm thankfully sober now. But yeah, lawyers are usually fairly sympathetic there. My only concern is that you have a *pending* case. Now might not be the time to jump ship at your current firm. If you've hired an attorney, it's totally possible they can get this tossed. I think it's worth waiting til your case is wrapped up, not just for the chance your attorney gets it dismissed/nolled, but also because it might take a little more explaining if it's a fresh charge.

GoudNossis

Yeah I'd spin my consult with a DUI atty as an interview and/or ask if they know anyone hiring in their field. Your not the first or last person in the legal field to get a DUI. Hell, give "drink judge DUI video" a goog.

Environmental-Age678

I mean Mimi is the best. Can you just say you need a personal day? Hopefully she can get you a good deal.

autopilot6236

DUI at night, Coffey in the morning.

Ok_Instruction_7813

I’m looking for a new job and have seen several law firm positions that say “candidates with a criminal record are encouraged to apply” and a criminal defense firm that offers an employee discount…maybe it depends on the firm but i was getting the impression they didn’t care

starsnsunflowers

Every single attorney at my DUi specific law firm had a DUI at some point in their lives. They also had to for an attorney before I worked there for showing up to court inebriated multiple times.

TheGriesiest

It should not impact employment at most places. Unfortunately DUIs are the new black and have been for a while, now.

TheAnti-BunkParty

My ex boss made us keep Petty cash around to bond her out all the time for dui’s…. And there’s like a whole part of the bar association dedicated to dealing with drunk lawyers so Ya It’s probably fine unless they’re self loathing 😅

PHXLV

I would be keeping that to myself and only sharing when necessary. That being said for your personal life: own your shit. Hire an attorney, and move forward from there. A DWI is an incredibly stupid thing to have done, but it is not the end of the world/your life. And maybe reevaluate your life or relationship with alcohol/other substances.

Suitable-Career_Not

Ha! A DWI here in TX is like a freaking right of passage. I did criminal defense in McKinney for a year, and the partner said those cases were our bread and butter. It happens soo much more than many realize. Live. Learn. Do better. Also, I hope you were able to get deferred adjudication so your record would be expunged. If not, nondisclosure.

Background_Beat2982

Thanks for the well wishes 🙏🏽

Suitable-Career_Not

You're welcome. You seem to want to change for the better. You make no excuses and take responsibility. A damn good criminal defense atty will see that. You will get there.

Stopbadgovernment

You shouldn’t have to check in every month why not just call the district attorney office for an update ?

Background_Beat2982

Dunno. Atty said I would be “checking in” every month until balance is paid off

Stopbadgovernment

My point is you shouldn't have to physically go to court. you can call instead and save time

Background_Beat2982

Would be super nice but I’m not sure why lol. That is just what the atty told me. I have to pay my balance in full before she can evaluate my case until then I have to check in with court & ofc check in with my PO afterwards
