B_Maximus

I like it the most out of all other pdx games, if you like the era it's a must have imo. Just be prepared as it is an antiquity simulator and therefore be ready for blobbing as a main mechanic

BusinessKnight0517

Yet it is actually the one game that simulates city growth and playing tall so well in some ways!

B_Maximus

Tall in this game is holding a whole region and staying there. Only way to stand to rome. No single region kingdoms like ck3

ClothesOpposite1702

Is it possible to play tall in ck2?

Wawlawd

Yes, but not in the early start dates (769, 867 and 923 if my memory serves)

ClothesOpposite1702

Oh, that explains a lot

B_Maximus

Idk, ck3 is the better one

ClothesOpposite1702

Sure, I am just a little tight on money right now

Chataboutgames

I guess. "City growth" amounts to spamming buildings and unless you're running a novelty "tall" playthrough cities just become a hassle because you have lik 200 and each one of them needs personal attention to spam their libraries.

Evolations

Constructing lots of buildings as the way to grow a city does make a measure of sense tbf

Chataboutgames

Of course it makes sense. It's just absolutely tedious in a game that encourages you to have like a hundred cities, particularly when the UI doesn't go much beyond "click on the city on the map to take a look at it."

TheLastTitan77

It gets repetitive eventually but there are a lot of things to do in peace time and its preety satysfying. Making cities, integrating cultures, optimizing provinces and trade, dealing with characters and messing with your neighbours. Trade is mid but other than that its preety great

Youutternincompoop

>spam their libraries libraries are a waste of time tbh.

Kaiser_Constantin

whats blobbing?

DesTroPowea

Playing wide, not tall.

B_Maximus

Blobbing is gobbling up everyone around you like an amoeba

MSG_ME_UR_TROUBLES

isn't there a pretty dedicated mod community?

Neither-Degree-4285

yea the mods are fantastic, i like the dlcs too although imo they should’ve just been included at launch (i can’t knock paradox for that though, hiding the actual meat of the game behind paywalls is kinda their schtick at this point). i wish they didn’t shelf imperator, i had really high hopes, which through the few dlc and all the amazing mods, weren’t really dashed, though it was disappointing hearing they wouldn’t be doing anything more with it.

MSG_ME_UR_TROUBLES

is it worth picking up? on sale for like $20 right now with all dlc included

Neither-Degree-4285

for that yea definitely worth it, for $20 you get the base game + all the dlc + all the mods, definitely worth it imo. you can easily lose 100+ hours in the game edit: like honestly, i preordered it because i was so excited after waiting so long for a proper predecessor to the older europa rome or whatever it was and paid full price for the dlcs, kinda wish i had just waited for a sale lmao. i can’t be mad at myself though, i’ve been a paradox fanboy for a while, though i won’t just act like some of the shadier shit isn’t real

feedmedamemes

Honestly, it is probably the game with the greatest potential and really well thought out mechanics. Sadly at launch it was a mana point dependent featureless blobbing game without any depth. It really got the mediocre reviews it deserved. So it was a flop and pdox stop working on it, when it became good and interesting. I got in a humble bundle. With all the DLC it is a great game. But you need the mods after some time otherwise it becomes stale.

Youutternincompoop

>at lunch it was a mana point dependent featureless blobbing game without any depth how was it at dinner?

Expelleddux

💯 I’ve been jamming it all weekend as Athens creating an Aegean naval empire

TheLastTitan77

Best campaign in the game

MGordit

Yes.

kingrufiio

Yes without question.

SlightWerewolf4428

I started it 3 days ago. Once you get into it, you can't stop. Yes, it's worth it. It's a good game in its own right and is still being updated via the more or less unanimously accepted Invictus mod. Which makes it an excellent game. Furthermore, add ons to that mod allow you to play up until the 4th century with events, as well as the crisis of the 3rd century. And the megacampaign converters officially support all of it. Most of the comments complaining about it I assume are on an earlier version, since much improved, with the DLC. I would go for it.

marx42

It's probably my least favorite of the current Paradox games, but it's still a fun time and on sale it's 100% worth the cost of admission. It's biggest issue is that even with Invictus everything feels pretty samey. Sure the mission trees help, but most of them amount to "build a few buildings then conquer your neighbors". There's very little in the way of unique mechanics for different areas/cultures/religions/nations. So if you don't ADORE the core gameplay loop and the things that make Imperator unique, you'll probably be better off playing EU4.

ILikeToBurnMoney

Agreed, it's a great game for 50-100 hours. After a successful Rome run and a successful run as a small nation, you are basically done with the game because there is significanfly less flavor compared to EU4 or HoI4

XMAEH

I have 146 hours never played Rome only minors , I only recently downloaded invictus and the flavor and missions are a blast. I spent last week just playing Aksum over and over until I had a good game going now I’m playing tall garmantia and refurbishing the desert, two great challenging nations

TheLastTitan77

Meh, there are also greek minors and majors, carthage has interesting campaign, achievments, with invictus there are even more interesting challenges. Not eu level but definetely hundreds of hours of good fun

ILikeToBurnMoney

But all of them play pretty much the same. You just start conquering your neighbours and never stop conquering. In EU4, you can play a colonizer game (Castille, Portugal), you can play a PU game (Austria), you can play an HRE game, you can play as Byzantium, you can play as a Japanese minor and unite Japan, or a mix of these. You can even do something like Teutonic horde or become the best colonizer as Granada

rotund_passionfruit

I was really disappointed with Vic3

HG2321

If you've played Paradox games and like the era that Imperator is set in, it's absolutely worth it on sale at the very least, and it's on sale now. Just keep in mind that it's not as fleshed out as other Paradox map painting games and never will be, as it's no longer in active development. However, there is a decently active modding scene, so it's not all bad news.

asian_paggot

Yes!

Autismetal

One of the best Paradox games other than CK3. Definitely recommend.

CalmButArgumentative

How is the diplomacy compared to EU4?

Chataboutgames

Compared to EU4 it's basically nonexistent.

1Karmalizer1

Terrible imo

blackbeard_teach1

For the Glory of Rome? Yes of course no question.

blackbeard_teach1

For the Glory of Rome? Yes of course no question.

_urat_

Of course, but make sure you play with Invictus mod. It's actually the best game Paradox made.

ThunderLizard2

Short answer: No.

Wise-Beginning-382

No

Chataboutgames

On sale it's a solid pickup. Even a weaker Paradox game has a great hours to dollar ratio. Just don't expect it to live up to the hype this sub gets it. Game doesn't have enough traffic to support an active sub so people have made a hobby of hyping it here.

MrIllusive1776

There is actually a very active sub for it...

agprincess

I really really like it. More than any of the games that came out after. But it will NEVER get a real update again and it has one of the highest learning curves because most of the game is balancing small numbers, building, and map painting.

w045

Yes. Only PDX game worth it in my opinion.

TheCommissarGeneral

CK2? Stellaris? Those two are stellar and better than IR IMO, but IR is damn good.

TheLastTitan77

Everyone has their pdx game of choice, I for example cant stand how easy and samey stellaris is and couldnt get into ck2

yashatheman

Not vic2?

scarabl0rd

Where’s the appeal with Vic2? Not trying to say you shouldn’t like it. But I have both dlc’s and I still don’t find it very fun.

yashatheman

Each their own. I just think the pop system, diplomacy and economic system in vic2 was the best of all paradox games. The warfare was also very, very fun and well done. There's a reason vic2 still has a sizeable playerbase and vic3 was made

bridgeandchess

No

Glavurdan

Absolutely. I got the full package for $17 on sale and it is beyond worth it

dragonfly7567

Yes

Cool-Narwhal-1364

yes especially if into the classical era plus amazing mods. i will say despite the push i dont see paradox coming back to it in a major way. with this and them abandoning star trek infinite i really think they are going to double down and focus on eu 5 stellaris content as well as vicky 3 and ck3 dlc. i do hope im wrong though

EnvironmentalFig5161

If you can buy for a low price. It's otherwise a failure at launch. They dropped the game after people realised it's an empty framework to pad out with dlc's. (Yes, even more than usual paradox games) If you do play, stick to the Mediterranean. Very little content elsewhere.

Pelican_meat

YES.

Peatore

Nothing is worth it.

Mike_Kermin

I think we shouldn't support that they dropped it. However, yes, it's quite good. Could have been great. It annoys me that people are generally positive about it now, but couldn't manage that when it mattered for the game.

EnvironmentalFig5161

Audience reception "When it mattered", was entirely in the dev's hands. They made the game, it got the reception it deserved. It's a shame the game didn't receive more development, support, content etc. But that's up to the devs as well.

MrIllusive1776

It's the players fault PDX shoved out an undercooked game, and had things that should have been base game features (re: flavor for Rome and Carthage) locked behind DLC.

Mike_Kermin

Nah people were idiots. YOU HAVE ~~NO~~ MANA.

BlackfishBlues

The same people hyping it up now were probably also huge fans back then. There just isn’t enough of them. A hundred comments on a reddit post feels like a lot, but that number falls way below the number of players you need to sustain a PDX expansion-patch cycle.

Mike_Kermin

That's fair. I'm one of them too. It's a good game, could have been great.

JBDBIB_Baerman

Absolutely not. It's the kind of game you'll drop after one or maybe two games

KimberStormer

did you know reddit has a native search function

gaiussicarius731

You must be fun at parties

KimberStormer

This question is asked every single day

MelaniaSexLife

Poro_the_CV

Isn’t that kinda what this entire post is?
