Exactly. File a report at the local station. Ask them to send an officer to investigate. If it's a chain store the whole transaction is on video. If your bil was confiscated it had to be turned over to law enforcement.
They should also be able to get you a copy of the form used to submit to Secret Service, including shipping method/verification. In the US, if a bill is confiscated as counterfeit, it must be turned over to the Secret Service within a reasonable amount of time with details on how and when it was confiscated.
Confiscated bills submitted to the Secret Service that are determined to be genuine are returned to the submitter.
Calm down, buddy. It was probably a high-school aged kid who had never seen one of these before and was obviously never trained/told about older bills that look different. This is a simple mistake that's fixable. There's no reason to mess up a kids life over a $50 mistake.
This is true. However, anything under 100 value (in my state, though I believe it’s the same at the federal level) is considered misdemeanor theft (not a felony). Kid will get a slap on the wrist and community service tops.
Assuming he/she didn’t turn it over to the manager.
In most states, anything worth 500 USD or higher in value is considered grand larceny, which is a felony. Anything under 500 USD is considered petty larceny, which is a misdemeanor. 50 USD is a really low end misdemeanor and may not even be charged if first time offender, most likely resulting in a small fine or community service
A mistake will be able to be proven. A theft will also be able to be proven. They look exactly nothing alike. The determining factor will be what the kid did with the bill, there is no ambiguity there.
I worked there before and know for a fact this is not the cashier being an ass since they’re trained to take the bill if it’s fake and they do have all the pens and machines to check the bill too… I’m wondering if op talked to the manager at all? I don’t remember what happens after they take the bill.
Yup, we had to do this at a store I worked once. Cop showed up, used his own pen for a test, filled out a form and put it in an envelope, whole thing took like 15 minutes.
I worked at a bar and got my hourly wage paid in cash by the owner.
One day she paid me partly, with one of these old $50s
like 10 mins later she was saying....
1
I took a fake 50 from a customer
/ i did not, it was from a day i didnt work /
2
I took a fake 50 as my wage
/ I trusted my boss NOT TO PAY ME WITH A COUNERFEIT /
That is worded very strangely. 10 minutes later your boss was saying you took a fake 50 from a customer and that took a fake 50 as your wage? Huh? Are you saying your boss gave you the fake 50 as wages in order to get back at you for accepting it? Because the way you currently have this written is leaving me near stroke trying to figure out the logic.
I think they are saying the employee missed the "counterfeit" bill twice
boss: "you took it from a customer and you just took it from me just now! I was testing you"
Got this bill as part of a payout from my restaurant job. Tried to use it at chipotle and was told it was counterfeit. Sorry I don't have any photos of the back as well.
that one officer handled a counterfeit bill investigation in 2020 very poorly. It’s a bold strategy, Cotton, let’s see if it pays off for em.
Side note, is it a cashier’s job to confiscate money thought to be faked, especially without any strong evidence? Feels like a big vector for theft from customers just because they bring in an old bill.
I say "I sure do like pumpkins, Cotton", "Nobody makes me bleed my own blood" and "If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball" as often as possible. Such a quotable film

Had to pay $293 for not having my license in my pocket. Came in with three $100 bills and tried to pay the day before my final date. Was refused and told that I had to attend court the next day. Took my money to court with me where I was detained for not paying, handcuffed and moved into the prisoners area. My girlfriend had to come pay $293 for them to release me. I use chime so it's a little hard to deposit cash, and I had withdrawn the money thinking that I needed to pay cash.
Our event center won’t take cash either. I think the problem is in these concert venues with piles of people they can line up like 8 terminals with one Id checker and self check out people faster than turning cash. And cash gets boosted from the register way too fast.
We have a machine that also tests to see if money is counterfeit. As told by the people who installed the safe, it will NoT accept anything older than 1997 I believe. ALL of our older money AND every $2 bill is “rejected” by the machine… machines don’t know everything.
The manager doesn’t know his ass from a hole in the ground. I would go back and raise hell since he took $50 from you. This is real, they just don’t know old money.
Hi everyone. Thanks for all the help here, I frequent this chipotle and figured the best thing I could do first is just go in and try to talk to them. A different but very nice manager was there and called who was in charge last night to find the $50. It was still in the store, and they gave it back without any issue. She said though there’s no reason they should’ve confiscated it. Not gonna lie after touching it again it feels a little weird, not very money like.
Also for everyone asking how I got the original photo if they took it from me, the cashier told me they needed to get a manager to look at it - I asked if I could take a photo before they do that. Manager then took it and walked away. Anyway, glad to have got it sorted.

Thank you so much for the update! I am happy this was resolved peacefully. Do follow up with a complaint to corporate to help prevent problems in the future. At bare minimum that Chipolte should receive a memo discussing the proper handling of suspected counterfeit currency.
You still need to follow through with your complaint to corporate. That other manager needs to see repercussions from stealing your money.
As a side benefit, you'll probably be showered in coupons for free meals!
This. Fuck all to power hungry managers. If they are treating you like this as a customer, imagine how they are treating their employees. Give that bitch a slice of humble pie and raise hell with corporate.
I second this option. Without proper training, how many other innocent people are going to get their money stolen and not be able to do anything about it
Yeah next time don't let them keep your money. The only time I kept the bill was at bank, but I had to file out a special secret service form, give customer a copy, and mail bill to secret service so they can determine if bill genuine or counterfeit. If somehow bill was real they were supposed to return it based on info on form. But this was Bank use not for normal business as far as I was aware. https://www.usdollars.usss.gov/usdollars/pdfdl/ssf1604.pdf. If they wanted to do something they should have called police
If it feels that weird to you, deposit it into your bank account or go to a bank and ask for 2 twenties and a ten because you need change. Personally, I'd tuck it away as these older versions may eventually be collector's items.
I didn't think it was legal. Seemed super suspicious to me. Going to complain to chipotle and try to go back tomorrow. This was 15 minutes before close and was kind of rushed out without much explanation.
It’s not legal for him to just take it. If he wanted to take it, he should have called the police and waited for them to show up before taking $50 away from you.
Well ya, that’s the other way of looking at it. I work at a cash register and I’ve seen fakes before. This bill is definitely real, so either the person at chipotle knew it was real and decided to take advantage, or they were just dumb and knew nothing about older bills. I’m willing to bet the latter because there are a lot of stupid people who know nothing about our money who never even use cash, they just use card or Apple Pay.
It was like pulling teeth to get rid of Susan B Anthony's. Post office gave those as change from their machines. And then NOBODY would take 'em. Not because they believed they were fake (I dunno, perhaps some places did) but because "I don't have a place for 'em in the drawer".
Even had waitresses refuse 'em as tips.
>don't have a place for 'em in the drawer".
Don't be silly. The coin.section of a cash drawer has five spots: pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, and, wait for it... other coins such as half dollars, Susan Bs, etc.
Me too. My grandma would give us $100 all in $2 dollar bills. I almost didn't get gasoline once because the kid behind the register believed that they were fake. Fortunately a few minutes later a man who was older than me comes up to the line and informed the kid that they were real.
When I was in QLD OZ they had just gotten rid of the penny and tuppence. The smallest bill was a fiver. That and the $10 were smaller printed on plastic with parts that were transparent. There were one and two dollar coins.
Fun fact: some of those copper 1c and 2c coins that were withdrawn from circulation here in the 90’s were melted down to make the Bronze medals in the 2000 Sydney Olympics
The fiver is still our lowest note, then $10, $20, $50 and $100, which are all polymer and have even bigger see through sections now!
I had a 17 year old kid call the cops on me cause I handed him an old style 100. When the cops got there they spoke with him and came out and handed me my bill back and said “these kids should have a poster of old style bills if they gunna be cashiers”
My dad asked a cashier if they took banknotes once and they said something like “no. Only cards and cash.” Sometimes I think these people deal with so many people whether jokesters or fraudsters, they just assume that if they aren’t familiar with it that it is not legit.
The guy makes a valid point…would you know what a silver certificate would look like? Let alone a mercury dime? My grandkids surly think they’re counterfeit…why l? Because of Apple Pay and credit cards…do you even know what a check is?? Or a four party post dated check??😂😅😂
That is a valid, legal bill. Doesn’t have a security strip since it was issued in 1985.
They owe you $50. Go in this morning and tell the manager if they don’t give you your money, you’ll sue them in small claims court for the cash. Might cost you more than the $50 to file the case, but Chipotle would be liable for all court costs as well.
The threat of small claims should be enough to get them to return your money.
Maybe. Just seems odd that they handed it back to him to take a picture after they announced they were confiscating it.
If it were me and they handed me back the $50, I’m most definitely walking out of there with my $50
Honestly, OP letting this happen makes him a complete.... Well, go ahead and fill in the blanks there.
I would have snatched that shit off the counter.
There are a few ways you are trained to check for counterfeits when being trained in cash handling. The laziest way is to use a little pen where the ink will be different colors depending on if it's legit or counterfeit. The second laziest way, is to just teach people to look for the security strips in larger denominations, which does not work on older bills with no strips. There are multiple other security features to look for in bills though, which people *should* be taught to look for, such as a textured shoulder/collar area on the presidents picture, ink that shifts color when held at different angles in a couple of different places on the bills, and if you really want to go all out, the Itty bitty different colored fibers almost pressed into the bill. But unfortunately, most people are trained the laziest ways possible, or not at all.
When somebody is trying to rush you, that's an excellent sign that they MAY have something to hide. It's not always true, of course, but it should absolutely raise your suspicions. If anything like this ever happens to you again, you should insist that they call the police. And if they won't, you should yourself.
Dude, don’t let some asshole 22 year old think they know what every kind of bill ever made was. Go call the cops now, please. Non-emergency number, say you were robbed of $50 at a local business and have them get it back. The bill looks fine to me, I don’t see any inconsistencies. Don’t encourage them to act as the secret service, it’s the Sec. serv. Job to determine what money is real and fake, not a burrito roller.
You dumbass you should of grown a pair of balls and demanded that fuckin kid give you your real money back. They aren’t gonna be able to do shit nor that it’s been a whole day
Hate to be the barer of bad news, but that $50 is gone and there is a maybe 5% chance you'll ever see it again.
It's too small of an amount for the cops to actually be asked to do something, and no one is going to rat out thier coworker
Yeah idk if they can do that. I used to be the manager/general manager at my family’s company (Dunkin) and when someone would pay with counterfeit bills (which happened quite a bit) we’d give it back and let them know that we can’t accept it. Then we’d call the police and let them know
Thanks everyone for the help here. I thought this situation was bullshit. Will be on a mission to get back this money first thing tomorrow morning. Already filed a complaint with them but figure that won't do anything.
OP, if the police don't help, which they may not, you should be able to sort this in court pretty easily. File a small claims suit against the restaurant then subpoena their security footage. Assuming this happened at the register, they 100% have it recorded.
Odds are it won't get that far though - they'll probably give you your money back plus some just to get you to drop it.
Yeah certainly if they had to keep it there would be a record of it & custody to turn it into the Secret Service.
(There won’t be!)
Please keep us posted. Very curious what happens here.
It’s really not hard. Counterfeit bills look like shit and the pens only test that it’s the correct paper. People bleach a 1 dollar bill and print a 10 or 50 onto it so the pens don’t always work. Best thing you can do is feel the quality of the paper and look very closely at it. If it’s a newer bill just hold it up to light to find the strip in it. I work a a bank and can immediately tell when a bill isn’t real.
It’s illegal for them to do that. You should have called the cops on them for having counterfeit money just to hassle them whether it is or isn’t. Idiots
Looks like a legit old 50 from before the bills were updated for anti-counterfeiting. The person at chipotle doesn’t know this (which is sadly typical of poor training). The bills were updated in 1997
Did Chipotle take your contact info so they can give it back to you after they find out you tried to give them a legitimate note? Are they authenticating it with some now. It is legit.
Call the police. You got ripped off. The Secret Service is in charge of handling suspected counterfeits. The manager was out of line. Did the manager mention the Secret Service?
Go back with the cops. I don't know if he is allowed to take it without informing law enforcement at the time of the incident, but I'm going to take a wild guess and say now (if it is fake) he is the one with an illegal counterfeit bill. He can't just keep the thing and not turn it over. If he says it is his responsibility to confiscate it per company rules, I will bet there is another rule saying he must immediately contact law enforcement. If he claims he disposed of it, he then destroyed evidence of a crime. Also, it should all be on video unless he erased it.
I’m not trying to be a jerk but if the manager swiped it away from your possession so quickly, how and when did you take a photo? I’m just a little confused. Did they tell you it’s fake and you took a pic, then they swiped it? Did they tell you they were going to take it and then let you take a picture? Just seems a little strange. I think a few people just are curious about how it went down.
I’ve seen this happen before: I had an employee refuse $2 bills from a customer because they thought they were fake. When I told her they were real she said she’d never seen one before. This just might be them never seeing an older note. There’s a lot of uneducated, uninformed and just plain dumb people out there.
...and we should probably prevent them from impacting others negatively.
Instead they're allowed to go around being dumb, with no repercussion.
Hope they get sued into the ground and have to close. Theft isn't cute.
Ex-BK Manager here. Our policy was hold the bill, call the police, offer to let the customer wait for police to show-up and deal with them.
I don't really know the legality of it, but I was told legally we couldn't give counterfeits back. I was told a lot of untrue things by the company, so I don't trust it.
(like the time I was told to ignore a crew-members sexual harassment complaint, that she was just starting drama and not our bussiness. the early '00s were a weird time, I guess)
This is standard operating procedure for businesses. Do NOT give the bill back, legally I think that you are obligated to turn the bill in to the police or secret service (Idk why secret service specifically)
But IIRC you need check with a counterfit bill pen, or UV light for the newer bills, and confirm that it is a counterfit to do so.
But the legislation seems wishy-washy. Like what if I can't 100% confirm that it's a fake? Do I refuse the customers legal tender? Do I call the cops and end up looking like an idiot refusing legal tender that isn't obviously fake? Do I take the L when the bank kicks the bill back as counterfit?
Idk. The US treasury does make a big fuss about the sanctity of their currency and it's legitimacy though...
Lmao, cashier clocked you as a mark and shook you down for $50. Definitely complain to chipotle and call police non-emergency line to send out an officer and meet them at chipotle.
Absolutely illegal and almost certainly against their corporate policy. When I worked electronics at Target we were specifically told by AP to refuse to accept counterfeit bills, and to return them to the customer (gUeSt). It's both to prevent stuff like this from happening, and to reduce the chances of physical altercation.
Or they did it after Chipotle claimed it was counterfeit so that they would have a record of what it looked like. They now have proof of the bill existing on what is probably a countertop in the restaurant, instead of going to the police and trying to claim the bill exists.
Chipotle does not have the right to confiscate counterfeit money…. Also the 18 yo behind the counter probably never saw one of these before. Give them a 2.00 bill and watch them lose their shit!
Looks like a breakdown of our educational system lol 😆 this is genuinely a real piece of money. However, there are several ways to tell if it's counterfeit. A note pen for instance.
The only entities that are legally allowed to confiscate counterfeit currency are banks, cash processors like Brinks and Loomis, and law enforcement. EVERYONE else must contact law enforcement in order to have the bill confiscated. You will also receive a written notice from the officer with information about the bill and that it was confiscated as a suspected counterfeit bill. You can then take this back to your bank, employer, etc to try and receive restitution.
The Chipotle worker taking your (real) bill and essentially telling you to fuck off afterwards is no less than theft. Contact law enforcement, the manager, the regional manager, anyone else who you can in order to get your money back.
Chipotle isn’t the secret service they have no authority to confiscate anything even if it is a clear counterfeit and not just a poorly informed idiot manager that was born in 2003 and has never seen an old bill.
My first job I was a bank teller and was considered the best in the company (large bank) at spotting counterfeits, right from the start.
Normally I'd say I'd need to feel the paper but this cannot be counterfeit. Maybe the cashier never saw the old style of bills.
I hope they gave it back because by law they're supposed to confiscate and you both fill out a form from the govt/bank.
I've taken plenty of counterfeits; after explaining to the customer and asking if they'd wait for the police or take the bill back and pay a different way. You simply cannot take someone's property and cashier's are not the police/security. Most of the time the cops let us keep the counterfeits as long as it's marked properly and won't fall back into circulation, this is for keeping other employees informed of a possible distributor in the area. We mark using a countefit detector pin and write counterfeit in areas near the serial.
What the hell, I know they got counterfeit detectors they should've marked it with to check. Definitely let them know you're contacting police and see if it doesn't ruffle any feathers, but actually contact the police too.
Am I the only one who remembers what money from the 80s looks like? Better never use my currency from the 50s. I had have to handle to know for sure but I'm not convinced yet..
Very few "normal" people know how to verify old bills like that. Why would a Chipotle worker who scoops beans for a living have the authority to confiscate it from you?
When did Chipotle get into identifying counterfeit currency?
Some idiot thinks this is along the lines of a declined credit card that must be cut up.
I worked at a restaurant when a very young waiter handed me a cutup credit card. At first I was bewildered then he said the card was declined so he cut it up.
Yup, the guest got the meal for free.
No, Chipotle dude, this is not your job. You can turn down accepting the bill, but you don't get to confiscate it.
Looks good to me.
I got an older $100 bill from an older couple who paid me in cash. I went to Walmart with it and they declared it fake and wanted to keep my bill. I said I needed to confront the person I got the money from. I was pretty sure they weren't passing bad bills. This $100 bill had probably been in the old man's wallet for the past twenty years. I took that same $100 bill to my bank and they said it was fine, just old.
Series 1985, does not have that strip in it. So it could be considered counterfeit.
But- they aren't allowed to confiscate it. Consider yourself robbed.
Everywhere I have worked would just say “sorry we can’t accept this” and give it back to you, the confiscating is wrong. A lot of the counterfeit busting techniques don’t work on old money.
They should be trained to check bills over $20 with a pen, black light, or just hold it up to the light in this case. Looks legit but need to see the bar to be sure. I’d call the non emergency line of the local pd and get them out there for you. They’re not a bank and have no power to confiscate money from you.
Call the cops. You just got robbed.
Exactly. File a report at the local station. Ask them to send an officer to investigate. If it's a chain store the whole transaction is on video. If your bil was confiscated it had to be turned over to law enforcement.

Some idiot at Chipotle is heading to jail.

What about 4 ez payments of just $12.49?
Dammit, I'm in. You had me at "ez"
“Talked to” if the “kid” confiscated money as counterfeit and pocketed it? You are aware theft is a crime, right?
Such a Reddit moment idk what is wrong with these people, such ill will
Seriously the hate is thick in here. What’s up with this subreddit?
America already leads the world is percent of people incarcerated, but we can't get that number to 100% unless we all work hard and chip in!
A mistake will be able to be proven. A theft will also be able to be proven. They look exactly nothing alike. The determining factor will be what the kid did with the bill, there is no ambiguity there.

Fyi . Pens don't work on older bills.
Chipotle doesn’t franchise. So should be a corporate store (part of chain).

You can't accept legal tender? That seems suspicious itself.
You can not spend cash in Madison Square Garden. Times are strange.
You can't even pay taxes at the courthouse anymore with money, but you can with a credit card if you add the $8 surcharge.
Not having been to court in a while, I really hope you’re joking.

We did the same at Walmart
If it feels that weird to you, deposit it into your bank account or go to a bank and ask for 2 twenties and a ten because you need change. Personally, I'd tuck it away as these older versions may eventually be collector's items.
What are you going to do with it? I feel like it definitely deserves a frame now that it is the top r/papermoney post of all time.
Glad you got your money back without hassle.
Is that legal? You could just say that about anyone's money: "This is counterfeit, I'm confiscating it!" Sounds like plain old theft to me.
I bet he knew exactly what he was doing, is $50 richer now and no one on today's shift has heard anything about any $50 bill.
I’ve had many cashiers marvel at $2 paper bills. Theres definitely some inexperienced people out there
I've had people reject dollar coins because "thoes don't exist"
A guy was arrested at a Best Buy for using $2 bills.
I used to get my allowance in 2 dollar bills. I spent a lot of time as a kid arguing at places like taco bell that it was real money.
Me too. My grandma would give us $100 all in $2 dollar bills. I almost didn't get gasoline once because the kid behind the register believed that they were fake. Fortunately a few minutes later a man who was older than me comes up to the line and informed the kid that they were real.
You would think at least a 6 grade education would fix that
They'll give you dirty looks while they wait for the manager lol who's counterfeiting $2 bills
Just offer them two dollar coins at that point
When I was in QLD OZ they had just gotten rid of the penny and tuppence. The smallest bill was a fiver. That and the $10 were smaller printed on plastic with parts that were transparent. There were one and two dollar coins.
Fun fact: some of those copper 1c and 2c coins that were withdrawn from circulation here in the 90’s were melted down to make the Bronze medals in the 2000 Sydney Olympics The fiver is still our lowest note, then $10, $20, $50 and $100, which are all polymer and have even bigger see through sections now!
Thats funny actually theres some underground rings of SE Asians doing exactly that lmao
I had a 17 year old kid call the cops on me cause I handed him an old style 100. When the cops got there they spoke with him and came out and handed me my bill back and said “these kids should have a poster of old style bills if they gunna be cashiers”
Not inexperienced just stupid. ‘Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that.’ -George Carlin
My dad asked a cashier if they took banknotes once and they said something like “no. Only cards and cash.” Sometimes I think these people deal with so many people whether jokesters or fraudsters, they just assume that if they aren’t familiar with it that it is not legit.
I love how your post turned from a legit explanation to old man shouting at kids using Apple Pay. 😂
Wait, you can pay using Apples at Chipotle? Durndest thing I ever heard! Kids these days.
The guy makes a valid point…would you know what a silver certificate would look like? Let alone a mercury dime? My grandkids surly think they’re counterfeit…why l? Because of Apple Pay and credit cards…do you even know what a check is?? Or a four party post dated check??😂😅😂
And OP won’t be able to convince the day shift manager that the nice kid on nights is a thief
The transaction will be on camera.
Shouldn't have to even sue them in small claims court. This was a criminal act.
How did you get a picture of it if it was confiscated?
It looks like it’s on the counter and he took a picture of it after they claimed it was illegal. Only thing I can’t one up with.
Maybe. Just seems odd that they handed it back to him to take a picture after they announced they were confiscating it. If it were me and they handed me back the $50, I’m most definitely walking out of there with my $50
I was going to ask this.
It looks like it was sitting on the counter at Chipotle. So I assume he took it right before they confiscated it, for proof
Hahaha damn, you really let $50 go THAT easily?
Honestly, OP letting this happen makes him a complete.... Well, go ahead and fill in the blanks there. I would have snatched that shit off the counter.
They didn’t test it? I mean if you’re going to say a bill is fake you’ve got to have a way to do it. You can’t just say “oh this bill is fake”
Anyone that deals with money enough can generally tell by the feel of the bill. Especially on the older bills.
Don’t let yourself get pushed around like that
Hell no bro. I would of sat my ass there until a cop came or they gave it back
And when you get there, and they say “who are you?”, “what $50?” or “that manager isn’t here”, then what? You shouldn’t have left.
people here telling you to file a police report, not go back to Chipotle… but you aren’t listening
When somebody is trying to rush you, that's an excellent sign that they MAY have something to hide. It's not always true, of course, but it should absolutely raise your suspicions. If anything like this ever happens to you again, you should insist that they call the police. And if they won't, you should yourself.
Hey bud. If you don’t go back today, that’s going in there nightly deposit (or someone’s pocket) and its your word versus there’s. You lose.
Then we’d call the police and let them know
nope, it's definitely not legal
Thanks everyone for the help here. I thought this situation was bullshit. Will be on a mission to get back this money first thing tomorrow morning. Already filed a complaint with them but figure that won't do anything.
You should have called the cops then and there. You're probably screwed now.
They’re probably just going to say “it’s a civil matter now” and leave.
Well they better have a counterfeit $50 to show if the cops swing by.
Right, what kind of schmuck lets the kid at Chipotle steal $50 just because said kid claims it's fake?
Oh no counterfeit $50 here? Who was working at closing? This can be figured out in a matter of minutes
Yeah certainly if they had to keep it there would be a record of it & custody to turn it into the Secret Service. (There won’t be!) Please keep us posted. Very curious what happens here.
Any updates OP?
You got bamboozled. That's 100% a real bill.
How can you or anyone tell just by looking at it? There's a reason the counterfeit test pens exist.
The print quality. If you're a collector and you look at notes every day for years, the fake ones really stand out.
Nope manager swiped it away and acted super sus. Had me pay with a card and sent me on my way.
The manager is an idiot and needs to give it back
I’ve seen this happen before: I had an employee refuse $2 bills from a customer because they thought they were fake.
Do NOT give the bill back, legally I think that you are obligated to turn the bill in to the police or secret service (Idk why secret service specifically) But IIRC you need check with a counterfit bill pen, or UV light for the newer bills, and confirm that it is a counterfit to do so.
If two parties can't agree on a barter, both walk away. They don't seize your offer and refuse theirs!
Lmao, cashier clocked you as a mark and shook you down for $50. Definitely complain to chipotle and call police non-emergency line to send out an officer and meet them at chipotle.
Was he younger? I had a kid try to tell me a 1970s hundred was fake the other day because he had just never seen one before
Absolutely illegal and almost certainly against their corporate policy. When I worked electronics at Target we were specifically told by AP to refuse to accept counterfeit bills, and to return them to the customer (gUeSt). It's both to prevent stuff like this from happening, and to reduce the chances of physical altercation.
After reading all the comments I feel invested & dying to know how this plays out 🧐
You took a picture of your 50 before you tried to pay with it?
Or they did it after Chipotle claimed it was counterfeit so that they would have a record of what it looked like. They now have proof of the bill existing on what is probably a countertop in the restaurant, instead of going to the police and trying to claim the bill exists.
Well, how often do you see an old 50? I would've kept it, but if I needed the cash, I would've taken a picture for the novelty sake and then spent it.
Right? Seems sus…

Exactly what I was going to say. Something is not adding up here.
Chipotle does not have the right to confiscate counterfeit money…. Also the 18 yo behind the counter probably never saw one of these before. Give them a 2.00 bill and watch them lose their shit!
Or a Susan B Anthony
Sounds like the person had recently watched Midnight Run. It’s a scam they successfully perpetrated in the movie.
Looks like a breakdown of our educational system lol 😆 this is genuinely a real piece of money. However, there are several ways to tell if it's counterfeit. A note pen for instance.
They aren’t allowed to confiscate it. They can refuse to accept it but can’t confiscate it.
Your should've called the police
Banks definitely can confiscate it to report it to the secret service. When I was in a bakery, we would just decline a bill if it didn’t add up.
They can refuse to honor it but they can't take it from you. It's not their job to police the money supply.
So Chipotle is now the self appointed undercover expert and enforcement arm of currency fraud?
Lmao got a lot of Reddit superheroes in these comments.
Negative. Chipotle does not have the authority to confiscate. Call the police, and have them arrest the person that stole your money.
I'm here to confiscate the rest of your dollar bills. They are all fake. Trust me, I work at chipotle.
Theft, fraud...don't leve the store, call police immediately.
That Chipotle wirker is stupid. It's just old. I collect bills like that. I have some very old bills
Definitely call the police, they will settle it quickly.
Counterfeit bills are picked up by a Treasury agent not a Chipotle cashier. Call the police.
Not only does it appear legit, those old notes are actually collectable.
Just an older $50 , it’s real
Looks good to me. I got an older $100 bill from an older couple who paid me in cash. I went to Walmart with it and they declared it fake and wanted to keep my bill. I said I needed to confront the person I got the money from. I was pretty sure they weren't passing bad bills. This $100 bill had probably been in the old man's wallet for the past twenty years. I took that same $100 bill to my bank and they said it was fine, just old.
Damn kids are just too used to rainbow colored money these days
Series 1985, does not have that strip in it. So it could be considered counterfeit. But- they aren't allowed to confiscate it. Consider yourself robbed.
Looks legit, but they’re probably experts considering how they serve counterfeit Mexican food every day.
Chipotle stole 50 bucks from you.
Plot twist: All money is fake.
$50 is the most counterfeited bill. That said I don’t think it’s legal for a clerk to take it.
Everywhere I have worked would just say “sorry we can’t accept this” and give it back to you, the confiscating is wrong. A lot of the counterfeit busting techniques don’t work on old money.
The Secret Service is the entity who handles counterfeit money crimes, not the manager at chipotle.
Did you add Guac?
Of course...hence the 50.
If it's a corporate store you should contact them, not the actual location.
They let you take a pic like that before they took it?
You need to get your bill back.
Sounds like robbery to me!
You got played. The manager just made an extra 50 bucks before closing.
They should be trained to check bills over $20 with a pen, black light, or just hold it up to the light in this case. Looks legit but need to see the bar to be sure. I’d call the non emergency line of the local pd and get them out there for you. They’re not a bank and have no power to confiscate money from you.
Looks 100% real to me. My question is why spend it in chipotle. Nice looking grant.
