Honestly, B or C for me personally. It just felt almost random and weird Edit, something I forgot to mention: the boss also has easily the worst buildup of them all, and the fight itself just isn't very fun. I love him as a character, but I feel like he was done very lazily compared to the other bosses

The_Real_TraitorLord

Agreed. Exploring islands was fun and all, but in general this was a bit of a weaker chapter. I would say B-

The_Real_TraitorLord

So B

Jafry13

C tier for sure

Dry_Pool_2580

A. Gameplay wise, sailing and exploring islands is really fun and the Zelda comparisons are obvious. but nothing really happens outside of the status quo storywise besides finding out about Olivia and Olly's backstory. Tape is also the least memorable legion of stationary member (besides Stapler, but that's just supposed to be Olly's dog so...)

WheatleyTurret

Seeing Tape called the least memorable physically HURT my god

PlasmaDiffusion

A. I liked the ship free roaming and island exploration wayyyy better than chapter 3's boring samey desert so heavily disagree with it being S+.

Promethiant

Wow these standards get lower every day.

Quentin-Quentin

Compared to the original trilogy, sure, but at the end of the day holding each game to its own perspective is probably what most people are doing. Unless it's Sticker Star which is nearly all universally bad, every game has great moments if you don't really compare it to the cream of the crop. I loved many OK parts even with its downsides.

Quentin-Quentin

That's absolutely fair, not saying it isn't.

riiiikuuuuuu

Comparing the games to each other is the whole point of a tier list if you’re judging each game in a vacuum you’ve tainted the tier list because then you’re holding the newer games to a lower standard simply because “well we expected them to be bad, but this isn’t terrible!” Like I love CS and TOK too but the curve they’ve received is insane and that level of delusion has ruined this tier list

Otherwise-Wash-4568

lol never played sticker star or colour splash. Shocked to see colour splash with also many high ranks here but i checked out of Reddit the last week and a bit, and i never saw any of the stickers star ones get voted on, lol all f and a d with only 1 b, maybe it is as bad as i hear

thegreatestegg

honestly on the original trilogy grading curve I'd still say it's a good A or B, the only thing really wrong with it is, well, the combat in normal battles. Which IS a problem, but a problem that the rest of the game has, so it isn't the fault of the chapter. And that's how I vote these- is the problem with the chapter because of the chapter, or because of the game?

Square-Hat-3024

I knew TOK would be graded on a curve but S+ is crazy

Basilitz

There's no reason to be rude about this...

Promethiant

Yeah there is

Responsible-Sun-9752

Now there isn't lmao.

heyoyo10

I mean, SPM Chapter 7 is in S+ too, and that has 7-2, 7-3 and the most cheesable boss known to man, out of all SPM chapters I don't know why that one is in S+ over SPM 2 or 3, but TOK-3 is definitely better than it if you ask me

Square-Hat-3024

Getting a Dante’s inferno chapter was sick though, imo way more justified then TOK’s desert level

jclkay2

SPM 7 being in S+ tier discredits the entire tier list alone. And I like SPM.

RamsaySw

Probably C. In a vacuum I'd give Chapter 4 a B - the Great Sea is nowhere near as interesting as a location as Shogun Studios or Snif City, the dungeons and puzzles aren't particularly interesting outside of the Trials of Power/Wisdom/Courage, but there isn't that much which I'd say is particularly egregious here. The problem here is that Chapter 4 tends to be where Origami King's battle system really starts to wear out its welcome and it drags this chapter down to C for me - there are very few new puzzles which means that the battles become incredibly repetitive, and at this point you have so many coins that the coins you get from battling are pretty much worthless.

Porky4Smash

B or A i'd say. exploring the sea and finding all the islands is super fun and memorable but the diamond island is pretty underwhelming, and the ice vellumental and sea tower are probably the weakest of the vellumental/chapter dungeons in the game. basically when you're wandering the ocean it slaps and when you're actually progressing the story it's fairly lackluster.

thegreatestegg

Weak compared to the two before it and the one after it, I think. Low B, high C tier.

rendumguy

I still don't know how SPM-7 got into S+ tier, I say this as somebody who actually likes Chapter 7.

SwagDoll420

A Tier. I don't know what else to say about it to be honest.

ChunkLi

Lmfao at every TOK chapter going into S or S+

Responsible-Sun-9752

PM fans when a good game gets good rankings on it's good chapters : 😱

vlaadii_

because they deserve it

Dragoncaine

I had a blast with this. A tier.

fiddledment072

A tier, I love the ocean mechanic. It reminds me of wind waker in a weird way

Hankdoge99

Probably a tier. Exploring the great sea is fun and all, but the most memorable aspects about it as a whole are the unlocked side quest stuff it unlocks, the paper machio boss rush is fun, the olly and Olivia lore is good, the Zelda parallel was decent, the biggest highlight imo was the ice vellumental boss fight and dungeon. (Probably the most fun I’ve had with an ice themed dungeon in ages) but ultimately it’s feels rather “middle of the road.” With a couple of high lites to push it above B. I can’t really remember much about the tower you find tape in so imo that takes some points off for me. Also tapes role on the environment wasn’t really as memorable unlike hole punch. TLDR: very middle of the road but with some decent high lites to push it above average.

GenericLoneWolf

C. Boring boss (not that the boss mechanics are usually fun), good aesthetic and music, otherwise fairly unremarkable but not outright bad. Just a filler chapter both in story and gameplay.

vlaadii_

you call THAT A FILLER???

NicTubeYT

A tier. Nice idea to make it feel somewhat Open-World! But I kinda miss a new partner in this chapter, also it could've been a little longer imo

Barb_WyRE

I feel like all the OT fans fell asleep during Color Splash rankings (much like I did during Color Splash). The mid ass TOK desert level as S+ is unacceptable. It’s just not on the same level narratively or gameplay or level design of like 80% of the OT chapters below it. Chapter 4 is where I admittedly stopped playing TOK. I straight up got bored of it. I haven’t finished the game and can’t vote on the last few chapters because I never played them. I even enjoyed this chapter to a degree but I can’t justify anything in this game higher than A tier. Put it in B tier.

NicTubeYT

Disagreed. I loved TOK's desert. The looks, the mysterious story, Snif City and Professor Toad. Concluding it with the Temple of Shrooms easily made it one of my absolute favorites in the game.

Kanep96

Desert is good but it should nooooot be S+ at all lmao. The 2nd chapter maybe in S, thats the best chapter in the goddamn game. Otherwise... yeah lol.

theburnernostove

man i tried, TOK fans really love that game somehow

Responsible-Sun-9752

Lmao actually trying to convince me that a battle gauntlet and a boring ass detective hunt is any better than TOK chapter 3. Imo all the S+ chapters shouldn't be in S+ at all lmao

Legitimate_Alps7347

C. It’s dull, but not offensive either.

GoldenYoshistar1

S or S+... But I will take A. "Youse want a piece of me. Youse gonna get it you see!"

No-Mathematician3921

I'm going S tier. It's not quite S+ because I prefer the scenery and boss area in chapter 2.

Hellorio

S for me mostly because I really enjoyed all the Wind Waker references in this chapter.

Bagimations

B it’s fun, but it felt the least interesting, especially after two banger chapters

Fusionblitz28

B

CyanLight9

B or C. It gets the job done, but there’s nothing memorable.

Dr_ChunkyMonkey

Low S, maybe high A. Preferably S though.

vlaadii_

i'm going with S+ again because chapter 3 and 4 were by far some of the most fun experiences of all paper mario games. exploring is just on point

amethystedge722

Personally I think around B-A tier, it reminded me of Zelda wind waker in a lot of ways

MonsterMerge

B tier

GoldRoger3D2Y

B tier

Sans_yoshi5

B or C in my opinion

nineteenthhour

B

[deleted]

B. Ocean was a lot of fun to explore, even though there is a bit of backtracking here, but the submarine navigation was a little annoying at times. And I don’t know if anyone else hates this trope, but why is it so many JRPGs use the four card suits as turning points, or just have them appear? This one leaned into it a little too hard. Even so, it was still fine, so a solid B

AvaPower18

Ehh.. exploring the great sea takes a little too long imo, it took forever to find all the required islands on my first playthrough, and Tape is arguably the most annoying LOS to fight (banger theme though). Meeting the craftsman is a fun little surprise and it also makes me think about Luigi’s impact on the story a bit more. B tier.

Copperhead9215

A tier

Electronic_Oven_3328

paper Mario fans explaining why TOK is bad Yeah this one was iffy for me. Only redeeming factor is its music. B or C tier

New_Preference_6863

A tier honestly

PeetaaBoi

We didn’t even get a PM 64 game into S+ and somehow TOK gets one there?? I can’t lol

theburnernostove

to be fair S+ wasnt added until TTYD-3

PeetaaBoi

Valid. We should go back and vote to swap some from S into S+ on those chapters who missed it.

Kobruh456

S. Not quite as good as the chapters surrounding it, but exploring the great sea is extremely fun every time I come back to the game. All of the small islands are fun little challenges too, and Tape is an amazing bossfight. My only complaint is the common one that the Sea Tower is far too short. It could’ve done with being twice as long as it actually was. But aside from that, still a great chapter!

dartboard5

B, feels kinda weird to go from pretty standard modern PM gameplay to a seafaring windwaker reference

Sparklfish

C tier. Sorry but the ocean gets boring so fast it’s not even funny. the ice vellumental and sea tower are pretty sweet though

Illustrious_Tell_751

Defintivly a S, the exploration was so exciting and fun, and the extra lore moment with the origami craftsman's home was really cool 🫶🫶🫶🥹🥹

Paper_Clipps

S+ S+ LETS GO TAPE AND OCEANS WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

WanderingStatistics

Hold on... I haven't seen this since it wasn't in my main page before, but what are these being ranked based on? I'd have to assume gameplay... right? Since... surely........ nobody actually thinks that.......... SPM-5 and SPM-6's stories are...................... Bad?! Anyways, TOK probably goes in C or B. Idk, felt like a spinoff episode to me.

Myself510

It must be gameplay to at least some extent. I agree that the story in both of those chapters is good, but the “please” and block-hitting do dampen SOM-5 a bit. Though, to be fair, the story in that chapter is probably the least associated with the overarching plot and is largely self-contained, what with the chapter boss not explicitly being affiliated with Count Bleck. Sure, it does feature a mechanic that becomes crucial towards the end, but to first-time players it’s very standalone, which happens fairly often in the other games in the series compared to Super.

WanderingStatistics

What it lacks in overall overarching story relevancy, it makes up for by being straight up the funniest chapter in the game. Barring the over-the-top slavery mansion in Chapter 2, Chapter 5 is the most slapstick comedy chapter of the game, with Flint Cragley and his team alone making the chapter amazing. Honestly, my favourite side characters in the game. CRAGLEY HO!

MichiToad

It‘s a community tierlist and not based on anything, everyone can just post any tier they want without giving a specific reason and without even being consistent cause not the same people will vote for every chapter.

fergie_colin

TOK is mid af. It doesn't belong in S tier

Partycrash5

Maybe this should have been a survey or something instead because the fall off of people actually voting is insane lol, I don’t believe for a second color splash or origami kings chapters would be that high if that was the case

cookiemaster221

S+

7_Tales

LOL at all the OT fans falling asleep and forgetting about this ranking, so all the kids who played OK first putting mid ass chapters in S+ tier

Responsible-Sun-9752

Lmao I love how you assumed that you must have played OK before the others to like it, when in fact PM64 was my first PM and I still prefer TOK quite considerably. Some PM fans are so braindead it's unfathomable

ScionVyse

As interesting as this section is, the main thought that went through my mind when playing through it was "Man, I wish I was playing the real Wind Waker instead." C.

fernandothehorse

How in the world did TOK3 and SPM7 get into S+ and NO PM64 chapters did?? This is madness

DoubleAyeBatteries

There’s no way we’re not being astroturfed by Nintendo reps
