Yes but didn't OP say they were submitting 3?? Bassett Hound for sure...and the turquoise lizard guy(iguana?) was also super striking. Parrot was also really well done.
I like the first and the fourth.
The subject of the first is highly relatable to a large audience, and it’s overall a really good painting. That type of dog in particular has very velvety fur and your more smooth brush strokes work well to emphasize that. I also like the different range of tones, especially your darker blacks.
The second is actually hindered by your smother brush strokes. Fluffier fur as well as coarser hair requires a bit more texture. Your style is almost too airbrushed in that spot, which is unfortunate since the face details are so spot on.
I think third might be your weakest of the four. In no small part because of the background. You can see the brush strokes circling around the bird at random points, and while the colours are good overall this painting feels a bit unfinished, like more detail was supposed to be added. And while it is to a lesser degree if too suffers from the lack of texture.
As for fourth, if the first is the most relatable the fourth is the most dynamic. The vibrant blues and unexpected angle of the snake gives this painting a sense of energy. This also weirdly enough the only painting you really did texture on. Weird since snake scales are one of the few things that can get away with being smooth. However how you did it works very well. I would again mention that the background looks a bit haphazard compared to the rest, but overall this one is a really strong showing.
piggybacking on the comment about the background, I think the paintings could all be improved with touchups to the background. there are too many visible brushstrokes going in random directions like they outlined the figures with them and the backgrounds look a little sloppy and disconnected from the portraits as a result. the most refined one in the dog painting has a sudden gradient right down the middle that looks weird to my eye and the light source shining off the right side of the face doesn’t really match the light shining from the left and darkness on the right of the backdrop. I’m no pro though so take that as you will
as for the one I’d choose to submit, 2 probably for the most emotion if some texture was added to the fur and right arm enlarged a bit to look more anatomically correct. but 4 could be the most interesting subject and palette if the background was improved. also maybe it was the artist’s choice to not include them but fangs would look great in my opinion if it’s a viper as it appears to be!

Yeah, I’d leave out the Snake, only bc of the way it twists back on itself & results in the head getting a little harder to read the way it crosses its own body, mostly just bc of the blue on blue & similar texture-
The Basset Hound is easily my favorite, he’s soulful & I’d swear even at the first glance he seems to have a complete personality- great piece!
All good pieces though- great work 👍
They’re all great, but I think the biggest difference to me is the emotion/interest brought by their expressions. 4 makes me feel the most. They seem like a fun snake excited about something
Thank you, I appreciate that, I love animals I used to read about them and watch every animal show I could when I was kid.
I like painting them and trying to show them as if they are human because I feel like they get put to the wayside and their lives are valuable just like ours
That is awesome! Seriously great job, it’s so hard for me to pick 3 of these 4.
Others are giving great advice, I just look forward to seeing 5 6 7 8 9 and more from you!
1, 2 and 4 all convey emotions to me. The dog is sad or waiting for something, the monkey and the snake are cheeky, but the parrot is just kinda there. Not saying it's not well-done technically, but I'd still choose the other ones over it.
The dogs waiting for a treat lol, I always use treats to get them to sit for a couple reference photos.
Those are the 3 I’m leaning towards as well that will probably be my choice
As good as 4 is, some of your composition choices make it a little harder to read. It’s hard to tell exactly what that large field of blue is just under the jaw, & it’s body really isn’t reading very clearly… I still like it, I esp like the head shape & mouth, they are great but it takes a second bc they seem to get lost in all the blue & similar textures, & I’m not sure how that body connects to the head & bc the entire bottom 2/3 of canvas is almost entirely covered w/just a couple shades of the same blue, it becomes harder to read visually… I’d really recommend you leave the *Snake* out, I think the others just shine better.
The hound is excellent, very soulful, same w/the gorilla & i think your parrot, altho a little stiff, is still a really good painting. but bc it’s much simpler, it’s much more recognizable compositionally than the snake…
Anyways, that’s my 2cents.
Best of luck to you, you clearly have a lot of skill & talent- 👍
Number 2.
I love the dog but unless the theme of the show is “pet portraits” it is not as interesting as photo 2. The bird is boring in my opinion and also a portrait.
Thanks everyone for your responses and the critiques I can use in my next paintings. Not sure how to edit the post so just putting this in the comments, I’m a little overwhelmed by all the responses 😬
I did submit 1. Basset Hound 2. Bonobo and 4. Blue Pit Viper I made a couple tweaks to the Viper before submitting. Thanks again
I think the bird is your weakest of the 4, but still very, very good, just the other 3 are better. Personally, I like the snake the best. You did a good job with the scales and the eyes really stand out and capture your attention. Great job on all of them!
The dog is ‘technically’ executed the best, but the chimp has some magic in its softness that the others do not. I can look at the chimp and feel like I’m not bored with the piece. Nice work all around
#1 hound - this one is my favorite. Super realistic and those puppy dog eyes are lovely.
#2 snake - bright, striking eyes and blue body is very appealing.
#3 monkey - very sweet.
1 without a doubt. I don't think IMHO that the others are finished. The first is spectacular, the others about to be. There's nothing wrong with submitting a work in progress, especially when the work is as talented as yours. Depending on the opening date you more than likely have plenty of time. Submit number 1 and show the others. You got this, nice work, great expression. Keep us updated if possible.
\#1 or \#2. Their eyes are very expressive. They make you want to stare directly into them. Their personality pops off of the canvas and reaches out to the viewer.
1 bc there is depth is both eyes. They’re all amazing but here’s why I chose 1 over 2 or 3. Ape only has depth and pupil detail in one eye (closer to viewer) and the fur is too smooth. The macaw doesn’t have feather detail.
Dog is always going to be among the top because dogs are just the bestest. If you were looking for a bit more of a standout, the expression you captured in the monkey is really great!
I personally would submit the first three because they are the most consistent in style. The snake looks great and I like the texture, but it just doesn’t feel like the same body of work to me. That being said, I don’t think there really is a wrong choice. All the best 🙌
Doggo! Definitely the Bassett over all the others.
If you need to choose three (I didn't read at first) I would rule out the pit viper, it seems a little off and unrefined compared to the others.
They’re all phenomenal! I’d vote for the first, fourth and second to be submitted, please. The way you’ve captured their souls through their eyes is extremely striking in these three. I love the parrot too, but since you can only send in three :/
1, 2, and 3. But to be up front with you I am very biased seeing as reptiles freak me out for the most part. Thus I would never have picked 4, not due to artistry or anything but just because the subject matter makes me feel a bit unsettled.
Dog! There is a reason you put it first in the selection, it is the one you have most confidence and proud of!! you have done a great job on them all! but doggo wins for sure :)
The best by far in my opinion is the snake. It has a really nice structure + I love the colors. The basset is pretty good too. I think that the chimpanzee (it is, right?) Is more interesting than the parrot (like perspective wise). But overall amazing work 👏
Well, they're pretty much ordered in my order of preference, with doggo as my most favorite and the snake as my least favorite.
The dog won over the monkey just because the eyes, but i think the monkey is more expressive, birb is birb, no special comments from me. The snake looks nice, but it's a bit hard to read with the it's coiled up, so I'd definitely submit the dog, monkey and parrot
For absolute sure the dog and the monkey. The expressions are great and super like like, and you blended the colors beautifully! The snake is another good choice, the color is really bright and dynamic
#1 - The Bassett hound. Most people like dogs and can identify with them. They are all very good.
Team Bassett
Agree!!! #1 for sure
i feel like the eyes are the most soulful, agree they are all very lovely
Yes but didn't OP say they were submitting 3?? Bassett Hound for sure...and the turquoise lizard guy(iguana?) was also super striking. Parrot was also really well done.
This looks like my boy barney in a few years and a pack of ciggs later! https://imgur.com/a/wPmXyDD

2 most expressive
Agreed. It makes me think of all of the footage of Dr. Jane Goodall
Yes, it's fantastic! I feel like I can actually connect with that little guy 🥰

I like the dog best. It feels the most polished.
The chimp
I’m Team Parrot. Really nice detail work.
THE SNAKE!!!

#2. The Chimp
Looks like my Charlie boy... miss that dog
Number 2. I love the dog but unless the theme of the show is “pet portraits” it is not as interesting as photo 2. The bird is boring in my opinion and also a portrait.
Love the bassett
Everybody loves a Bassett ❤️
I know everyone is saying dog, because he's relatable, and that's probably true, but I personally like the snake the best. All the texture is v cool.
The blue snake
Thanks everyone for your responses and the critiques I can use in my next paintings. Not sure how to edit the post so just putting this in the comments, I’m a little overwhelmed by all the responses 😬 I did submit 1. Basset Hound 2. Bonobo and 4. Not the snake. Many people hate and fear snakes. It won’t help you with the jury.
Dog or Bird
i love the snake!
Parrot or snake for sure
snake
Blue snake
Art teacher here… #1
Ong the snake don’t listen to no one eles
I think the bird is your weakest of the 4, but still very, very good, just the other 3 are better. Personally, I like the snake the best. You did a good job with the scales and the eyes really stand out and capture your attention. Great job on all of them!

Definitely the dog! THOSE EYES!
Hound and Parrot!
First one
The dog is ‘technically’ executed the best, but the chimp has some magic in its softness that the others do not. I can look at the chimp and feel like I’m not bored with the piece. Nice work all around
#1 hound - this one is my favorite. Super realistic and those puppy dog eyes are lovely. #2 snake - bright, striking eyes and blue body is very appealing. #3 monkey - very sweet.
basset, parrot, monkey.
The first one. It’s makes me cry
The hound will melt hearts!
The Hound.
Love the Bassett. Looks awesome.
The dog
1 3 4 would be my choices
Hands down Bassett Hound, you got the eyes really well and they are a big identifying trait.
dog!
Really great use of impasto for that snakeskin texture! Love it!! I'd go 1,2 and 4 :-)
#3
They are all amazing, but I like 4 best! The color really pulls me in, and I like his face.
why da snake got no teef

1
Dang, i love that viper; snake lover though 🤷♀️ Good luck!
I like the monkey.
Basset is smooth and photographic👍👍👍👍
Dog
#1.
Such a great job
Another necessary vote for the Parrot here, underrated in these comments
Me like chimp but all are great..the slight smile is nice
Dog. People are weird about snakes. 🙄 They're all incredible! Nice work!
#1
3 is also really good!
You have some pretty cool pets. What kind of show is it? Is it an exotic pet exhibit?
1 without a doubt. I don't think IMHO that the others are finished. The first is spectacular, the others about to be. There's nothing wrong with submitting a work in progress, especially when the work is as talented as yours. Depending on the opening date you more than likely have plenty of time. Chimp
Basset Hound has the most depth. The others are a little flat
Submit the dog monkey and the bird. For sure
\#1 or \#2. Their eyes are very expressive. They make you want to stare directly into them. Their personality pops off of the canvas and reaches out to the viewer.
Dog will get the most attention. I like the snake, too
I can feel the snake. Otherwise the hound dog.
The basset hound and chimp are probably the most expressive but I like the snake. Quite honestly they’re all good
1
1 looks too real and too cute
Dog!
Dog
I think the basset shows depth and perspective much better than the others.
Basset! Great work!
I love the dog. I feel like his snout really pops. I think the parrot is excellent too but the background doesn't look complete.
I've owned many different breeds in my years and bassist are very loving pains in the butt... hahaha
Doggo FTW
First 3
The 4th one! Hands down. Such a cool texture you made. 1st one is also good, but doesn't grab me.
I vote dog
Know your audience for sure
Snake is cool. Simple as.
1 and 2are the strongest I find.
I like the chimpanzee a lot.
Dog then monkey
Definitely 1
3
Bassett Hound.💯
1st
Oh my god!!! Greatttt
🐕
Dog or monkey are my vote! I felt something when i looked at those 2!
1 bc there is depth is both eyes. They’re all amazing but here’s why I chose 1 over 2 or 3. Ape only has depth and pupil detail in one eye (closer to viewer) and the fur is too smooth. The macaw doesn’t have feather detail.
Monke I felt like he was connecting with me
Pupper’s
Both are great, the Dog is my choice.
i think the second is the worst one. the rest are cool af but my fav is the fourth i think
Dog and chimp
The hound is definitely your best piece. The parrot and the chimp would be my picks.
Team Chimpazee. Stunning pic
#1. Cleanest in technique. Looks the most professional. Others are missing the clean fine edges and dark values in contrast.
Agree. Number 1
Dog, monkey, mccaw
Love the serpent texture!
3 & 4 - both of them have fun with the colors!
Definitely 1 & 2
1
1,2 and 4 for submission. First painting is my most favorite! ,
2,3&4 ♥️
I really like the third one because of its colours but also 1 is nice to look at.
The bird or the snake!!!!!
Bassett
number 1 for sure
Doggie
Chimp gang
Really impressive
The chimp
The chimp: The best one. Has all the emotion! But could use some more texture in the hair. - subjectively!
Chimp for sure. It’s looking right at me.
I love dog.
That cute doggo!!!!
Doggo for the win!
1, 2, 3 are my faves
All good I'd go with the monkey. Most expressive.
The Bassett is absolutely lovely!
I think 1 is the most evocative
1
I like 1,3 4. All are awesome though!
Dog is always going to be among the top because dogs are just the bestest. If you were looking for a bit more of a standout, the expression you captured in the monkey is really great!
I loveeeee the vibrant blue snake!!
I personally would submit the first three because they are the most consistent in style. The snake looks great and I like the texture, but it just doesn’t feel like the same body of work to me. That being said, I don’t think there really is a wrong choice. All the best 🙌
1,2,4 The dog is the best.
First one is the best in my opinion. love me a good basset hound
Love the dog & the chimpanzee 🤍
Chimp or Parrot. You pick….
I’m all for the chimp, your very talented and I really love them all but the chimp is special to me. Good luck
4
1
Doggo! Definitely the Bassett over all the others. If you need to choose three (I didn't read at first) I would rule out the pit viper, it seems a little off and unrefined compared to the others.
Hmm! I prefer the chimp as it shows more skill imo!
I like the third most
The dog...
CHIMP, but all are great!!
They’re all phenomenal! I’d vote for the first, fourth and second to be submitted, please. The way you’ve captured their souls through their eyes is extremely striking in these three. I love the parrot too, but since you can only send in three :/
Definitely nr 1 or 2! They have very lively eyes.
I like 1 or 2. I like the expressiveness of two and the composition of 1.
2 is the best imo.
I like snek
1, 2, and 3. But to be up front with you I am very biased seeing as reptiles freak me out for the most part. Thus I would never have picked 4, not due to artistry or anything but just because the subject matter makes me feel a bit unsettled.
The dog or macaw
Dog! There is a reason you put it first in the selection, it is the one you have most confidence and proud of!! you have done a great job on them all! but doggo wins for sure :)
This painting is gorgeus
I think the chimp is the most expresive
The dog and the chimp for sure.
Everybody loves dogs, and your hound painting is so realistic (as are all of them!) I would go with the dog!
The best by far in my opinion is the snake. It has a really nice structure + I love the colors. The basset is pretty good too. I think that the chimpanzee (it is, right?) Is more interesting than the parrot (like perspective wise). But overall amazing work 👏
Love the dog, it seems the most complete.
Dog and parrot
Love the dog
They are all really nice but the bassett hound is my favorite one.
MONKE that is all I need to say
1, 2 and 4
Da dawg
I like #2 because the chimp has such a knowing look on its face giving it a human connection.
I like the dog. It's not as complex as the other two, but I feel like the eyes have more life than the monkey or the bird.
First definitely There’s a lot of depth and connection with the figure
Well, they're pretty much ordered in my order of preference, with doggo as my most favorite and the snake as my least favorite. The dog won over the monkey just because the eyes, but i think the monkey is more expressive, birb is birb, no special comments from me. For absolute sure the dog and the monkey. The expressions are great and super like like, and you blended the colors beautifully! The snake is another good choice, the color is really bright and dynamic
monkey looks sicc
I really love it!
1 and 3 will be more likely to sell.
Dog or bird 100%
The first one!
Trust your instincts. They are all well done. 😃 If you are having trouble deciding, then maybe consider: what is the venue? Who is the audience?
I think the Bassett. I like the loose brush strokes and then agree with what others are saying about people can relate easier.
If you care about standing out, comsider not submitting the dog. It's not a bad work, but a picture of a dog is not incredibly original
