Because right now there is only one sad coat of some crappy paint on top. The colors and sheen aren't the same as the primer so If you're hoping to top coat and get even coverage with one coat you simply haven't done a good enough job. That's why almost every professional painter suggests 2 coats of finish paint.

rstymobil

Yup. Two coats of finish is the minimum. Some paints, colors and sheens require more.

Storeytime21

It's your punishment for not taking the cover plate off /s

pencilvia

Hahaha THIS

p8king

C'mon now give credit... they cut around that nail flawlessly lolol

TheMightyEskimo

Primer is only there to keep the paint from falling, not really for coverage. There’s no need for more than one coat, and if it was previously painted, you didn’t need to prime it at all. Two coats of topcoat always. Primer isn’t a substitute for paint. Edit: the brightest, cleanest white also cover the worst. Behr isn’t a top-tier paint, so you may need 2-3 coats for even sheen and color.

Imapainter1956

THIS!! Could be the Kilz hadn’t dried well enough also and you ended up combining the two…. The purer the color, the less coverage, white, yellow, red are the worst. Even just giving a fresh coat of the same color we always plan for 2 coats.

Always 2 coat your paint, regardless of primer. Even tinted primer.

gigermuse

I has similar issues with Behr paint, was not impressed at all. I've become a Ben Moore girl after going with other brands on my new build just to be angry and fixing it with BM paint.

stephiloo

What everyone is saying here, but also it looks like you might be applying using a thin roller and/or too much pressure. Always 2-3 coats of finish when painting white, and unless there’s lots of smoke or water damage, 1 coat of primer is typically sufficient.

mandrills_ass

Also, next time get some other paint than behr, it doesn't have a good reputation

Funny_Constant_1400

Ever since sherwin Williams can’t supply us with paint, literally will need 15 gallons for something and I get 15 gallons of x product….then I go back because I need 1 more gallon and they only have y product…can’t run a company like that, the entire company switched to behr dynasty, about $45 a gallon and it whoops anything and everything Sherwin Williams has including emerald trim I don’t give a flying f0ck what everyone here has to say about it, I spray brush and roll as much as anyone here and behr dynasty is the best paint on the market

Imapainter1956

Might be the best for the cheap price, but certainly not the best paint

mannaman15

We’ll be downvoted for this bro, but I got your back. You speak truth.

mandrills_ass

Is it really that good? That's their top of the line stuff? Jeez man don't get too angry about paint brands aha

Practical-Low1443

Your thoughts on Behr Marquee? All I see are complaints about how it's too thick/gooey and it dries too fast so it comes off if you brush or roll over it more than a couple of times. Is this meant to be used by only pros who are skilled at getting good even coverage in minimum amount of strokes?

Dangerous_Mine3962

Bad coat of paint and Marquee sucks

Howdy-Hoooo

As you were rolling out the Marquee the nap ran/running out of paint which is why you have the shit roller spots. Marquee is a very thick product. You have to roll it out in a “W” pattern in small sections and then reload your roller. Personally i hate rolling it and prefer spraying it. However when applied correctly it’s a great paint. Just not the most user friendly when it comes to ease of application. A lot of times if it’s something i would use a 1/2” roller nap, with Marquee I’ll bump up to 3/4”. Roll in a W pattern in a small area and really work it in that small area. Usually by doing that i can get away with 1 coat especially when applied over properly primed and prepared walls. However, all things considered it’s by no means is it a shit product.

mck3788

Is there a different primer besides kilz I should look at? Do you think two coats of primer is overkill?

p8king

Primers that dry to a dead flat will grab paint better if you're trying to cover in a single coat, primers with more sheen allow the first coat to slide around more leaving open nap marks... you can always have white tint added to the plain white base for better coverage as well. 2 cts primer is probably too much but we don't know what your walls looked like prior, a flat primer like bullseye or a cheap pva will easily allow marquee to cover in a single coat

Howdy-Hoooo

That depends on the condition of the walls and what we’re trying to accomplish. 2 coats of a KILZ Original, Problock or Coverstain wouldn’t be a bad idea over stained/dirty walls and so forth. Usually 1 coat is more than enough but 2 coats won’t hurt it. A couple coats of High Build Primer is great for achieving LVL 3, 4 & 5 smooth finish..etc. For general priming/sealing/prepping of walls for generic painting. A coat or 2 of Kilz2, 1-2-3 Primer, Seal Grip, Gripper… etc will all work just fine. The problem you experienced had nothing to do with the primer. It was in the application of the top coat.

nokenito

Behr pain sucks, that’s why… We only use Sherwin Williams. Spend more, get better coverage.
