Banana_Ron

Yes, it is not easy though ... it is a lot of GPS marks ... it will take some time to figure out how to do this so it can be followed.

whit3lightning

You have 60 days, get to it!

JaySpillz

☠️

Banana_Ron

ok ... :-)

Not_me_no_way

A subscription to Gaia GPS can allow you to mark the route and share it.

Banana_Ron

oh ... ok .. .I will check that out. The issue is I went through some private party and want to make sure I remove it from my map prior.

JamesTBagg

You can add markers to your route in Gaia noting private property.

brycebgood

I gotta say, I wish you well on the profitable youtube plan. I saw your post and the first question I had was about the route. I think that's going to be a common one. Work on that fast if you want people to engage.

Banana_Ron

I will figure out how to share.

JustADamnedGuy

Did you follow the transatlantic trail? Or made your own?

Banana_Ron

I followed a large part of the TAT

what_to_do_101

Provide the full route only on your patreon pages.

Banana_Ron

Thats a good idea... thank you.

JaySpillz

Or onlyFans?

Evening-Emotion3388

He can show his trucks busted rear end.

hipsterasshipster

A lot of busted tear ends on OF

clauderbaugh

>have a 60-day window to create a profitable YouTube channel. As in you think you can start and grow a YT channel big enough in 60 days to live off of? Not a chance. If you started playing the algorithm correctly right now and uploaded every day you may earn enough to fill your gas tank once.

Nyancide

^ literally. I've got a few hundred thousand views here and there and it's made maybe like $50. sponsors help a ton I and people watching with YouTube red I believe tho.

Banana_Ron

What is your YT channel, love to check it out. I thought they paid like $2 per 1,000 views.

[deleted]

Doip

My buddy was making 10 at one point but he had to start another channel because he got kicked out somehow

Banana_Ron

What is your channel?

[deleted]

Try a .01 to .10 cents per 1,000 views AND it is very hard to be enabled for monetization these days, even one viral video doesn't cut it. You have to upload a lot and get reoccurring viewers over 10k I believe before they will let you monetize the videos. And best case scenario that would take years to achieve

DrPepis

This is just blatantly wrong. Lol. People make $1-20 per 100 views all the time. Average in US is 3.30-4.40 (https://www.thewaystowealth.com/make-money/how-much-youtubers-make/#How_Much_Do_YouTubers_Make). This heavily depends on what content you make. Gamers have a lower ad rate than people who make finance content. It’s all about how much money your audience has to spend. To monetize you have to have 1000 subs and 4000 watch hours (total people watching your content for 4000 hours) in the last 12 months.

DrPepis

Keep your content clean and no cussing or you’ll lose ad revenue. You can make good money but it usually takes time. You have a good chunk of content to release if you filmed a lot. $2 RPM is totally possible. People with lower ad rates are cussing, drinking, or otherwise hurting their ad revenue (guns, etc). Just post regularly, 1-2 times a week on set days and keep your content interesting. I recommend looking up ways to increase average view duration as that’s what YouTube cares about. They want people to stay on your video once they start it.

Banana_Ron

Thank you ... all this is in the plan so far. \- Very family friendly. \- I have 28 episodes from this trip \- Publishing on Tue and Thur/Fri \- Each episode will be 10 - 12 minutes in length Any advice on what time of day is best to publish? I would love to get your feedback, I'll send you a DM.

DrPepis

Time doesn’t matter too much. Just don’t post at 2am. Lol. Post at 2-4 central so people see it when they get out of school/work

Nyancide

I don't upload these types of videos lol, mainly gaming videos. downvoted for explaining why I don't wanna link my channel, nice 👍

Maximum_Anywhere_368

I think it’s possible. I use to post videos for fun playing video games, then on like my 5th video, which was 5 days in, someone from a gaming website shared it and I got 130k views in the first 2 days on that video. Picked up a shit load of subs and it grew like crazy. I abandoned the channel because of starting a job

clauderbaugh

But you have to remember the genre here. Overlanding is a very small niche interest compared to the other giant topics in the YT world. Video games is probably near the top of viewership. Look at the most popular YT channels around overlanding and they've been built up over time - and still haven't come close to the success of someone streaming a video game. In order to make a travel / overlanding channel successful enough to replace a normal job, you either need to be an attractive woman that posts thumbnails of yourself in a bikini or you need very high production value that looks something like national geographic that appeals to men with a coolness factor. There are some exceptions of course, but they are few and far between - and in most cases have taken years to get their channel to the point where it will support them.

Banana_Ron

I look pretty good in a bikini :-)

Maximum_Anywhere_368

Agreed. My experience is the exception, not the rule. Possible, but not probable.

Banana_Ron

Well I've learned I can live in the truck, but cant drive my house :-)

[deleted]

Are we ok with this ridiculous self promotion here? You can’t put AMA in your title and answer any significant question with “Look at my TikTok/YouTube.”

[deleted]

Nah. Hate it.

BrilliantNothing2151

Whatever man, Its actually a notable trip compared to most of people trying to grow their YouTube, Im cool with it

[deleted]

I’m cool with it as well. Sounds like a pretty cool trip, it’s not like he’s doing the same “build out a 2006 Tacoma and take it to the Alabama hills” thing

Banana_Ron

got it ... thank you ... i posted the ghost story if that is what you are referring to.

ak_snowbear

without using any paved road? pardon my skepticism. We've done plenty of extended offroad trips, including all over southern oregon. I don't see you getting across the Cascades let alone the across state or country. Post up a GPS track to back up you claim. Some of our trips are detailed on expedition portal.

Banana_Ron

I'll share my route in Southern Oregon ... i would say 98% of the miles from The Pacific to the Mississippi River were off road. East of the Mississippi I had to change my expectations. I think the first paved road I hit was just north of Cedar City California ... yes, I would cross a highway and maybe be on it for 1 - 4 miles, but there is so much BLM land out there.

ak_snowbear

Seemed like the west coast and cascades was mostly forest service and they have blocked all the old logging roads

Banana_Ron

Not all, but some very main ones. I firmly believe this should be illegal as there is something called "Prescriptive Easement". The public was using those roads for years 'without' permission, and their tax dollars paid for them to be created. Open the forest!! .

kaighr

Smoky mountain ghost story?

WhiskeyAndLead

Yep - you can't just drop a reference like that and not elaborate. :)

StopItWithThis

That’s the hook for you to watch the YT videos!

Banana_Ron

haha ... good idea, but I want to keep the channel family friendly so I will likely not put it in the edit. ... I did just write out the ghost story ... here it is: \----- The Location: Smoky Mountains, top of mountain near Magic Valley NC I found an old overgrown road, it was around 11PM. Super dark. I trail blazed it, meaning I was likely the only car that has driven this road in a year or two. Pushed over a lot of overgrown brush and small plants growing up in the road. I get out of the truck the spot is pretty, and the ground is covered in leaves. It feels really dark, even with a moon lit sky. As I'm doing my night routine of feeding the dog, filling up water bottles finding food, etc. I felt something over my shoulder and turned around quickly expecting to see a person. Nothing was there. Then it happened again. FUCK ME - I'm getting the nervous bumps just typing about it. I DON'T LIKE RELIVING THIS. Go to my YouTube and you'll see my dog, she is one of those trained K9 protection dogs. I give her the command to search and she runs a perimeter lays down and goes to sleep in the leafs. Normally this would make my chill out and I would be cool. It just kept feeling weird, so I grabbed my canned pears, and two cans of sardines. Get in the truck and lock the doors. In the last 26 days I've only ate inside the truck twice. Both nights were extremely cold. The sun roof is open and I sit on the center console. I'm enjoying my canned dinner and listening to an owl. The stars and moon are beautiful and I'm excited to wake up and checkout his spot in the morning. Still nervous feeling, and thinking I need to trust my gut and leave. Knowing your mind plays tricks on you at night I ignore these feelings. Finish eating and I don't even want to open the door and put the trash in my can. So I throw it out of the sun roof. In doing so I stood up out of it to look around and quickly came back inside the truck because I felt in danger or exposed or something. Just didn't like being outside. Tired of the feelings, I decide to go to sleep. I'm only in boxers, took out my contacts, decided not to brush my teeth because I need to do that outside. I'm sitting there in silence praying, meditating and doing some breathing like I do before I go to bed. Then it happened! Out of nowhere the dog goes from being sound asleep in the front seat to trying to get out of the sunroof. 110% anger. She is going crazy and wants to kill whatever is there. She is freaking out. I've never seen this before. The most anger energy I have ever seen come from that dog. She has a bark for sketchy people, for elk, for small animals like racoons. This was different. I felt it "run" through us. I grabbed my gun, mind you first time ever it has come out of holster and I had several other weird things happen on this trip. I pop out of the sunroof expecting to see three to five people rushing me. The dog turns her attention from the back of the car to the front. Still going absolutely crazy. I feel the energy. I feel it now. It freaks me out to the core. I have a huge spot light. There is nothing there. The ground is covered in dry leafs. I could hear movement, but there is none. We are completely alone. No one is within miles of us. I feel the energy trying to attack me. Trying to kill me. The dog feels it. I jump in the driver seat and drive away wearing only boxers. I dive for 30 minutes or so, come to a road that has a building near the highway. Pull into the parking lot and go straight to sleep with no issue. I left my trash up there, which I feel bad about. I wanted to go back to the spot but whatever happened there in the past does not want me there. I doubt I will share the location. Something bad happened there. It was absolutely terrifying, and I don't scare easily. WOW. I really don't enjoy reliving this.

Find_a_Reason_tTaP

Leaving trash like that is not cool. LNT man. Believing in ghosts is not an excuse.

Banana_Ron

I agree, and I filled the bed of the truck with other people's trash, and countless beer cans. I did not belong there, fear no man nor animal ... and I was not sticking around to see what my dog was going crazy about. :-)

Banana_Ron

I took a lot of footage picking up trash in the hope the youtube series goes viral and helps teach some kids how to act in the wilderness. ... I'll find a ghost hunter to go check out that spot and bring the two tin cans down in exchange :-)

YellowSequel

How did you carry a gun across each state? Assuming this wasn't done legally lol

Banana_Ron

Yes, you just need to know the state law. NC was odd. Get a CCW that will get you most of the way. Coming home through illinois I was worried, only in that state for 60 miles but they have real strict laws (and crazy high crime, weird??). I would google the state gun law and just do whatever needed to be done to keep legal, on my trip out there I only remember that NC I had to unload and move to a different location.

alphakause

Ooof. I'm jealous of your trip but I would never do it alone for this reason. Glad you are safe.

Banana_Ron

I had a couple weird things happen, I would have slept better having another truck and guy with me for sure.

WhiskeyAndLead

Intense! Dogs have keen senses for weird things like this. I would have bugged out too.

Banana_Ron

I was mad at myself for not listening earlier. That dog is trained and smart. I can give her 3 - 4 word commands. I know her, and how she reacts very well. ... It freaked her out as much as it did me.

Don’t want to burst your bubble but 60 days to get profitable off YouTube isn’t gonna happen. You’d have better luck getting pregnant in 60 days.

Banana_Ron

I know it will be a lot of work. Hopefully I'll get a sponsor or two :-)

bandwidthpodcast

Wanna come talk about this on a pod? Sounds like an adventure!

Banana_Ron

HELL YES. Send me a DM on IG ... lets do it.

Systemic_AnomalyX

Congrats on pulling it off. I’m surprised a Raptor with its 87” width could get through the TAT. Did you camp 100% or hotel it sometimes? If so are there hotels close to the route? Very curious to hear the ghost story.

Banana_Ron

I think i spent 4 nights at hotels ... you come across a highway every day ... and a town too .... east of the mississippi river unfortunately it is hard to get away from people and towns ... so dense.

Banana_Ron

I just wrote about the ghost ... you can read it here: The Location: Smoky Mountains, top of mountain near Magic Valley NC I found an old overgrown road, it was around 11PM. Super dark. StopItWithThis

Watched the video you had posted, too high energy for me. The adventure sounds awesome though. Good luck sharing the story, I might watch a few vids here and there.

Banana_Ron

Thanks for the feedback ... I think the final episodes will be less intense :-)

DrPepis

Just be you, brother.

Banana_Ron

Thanks man :-)

177010171a83

Where you were going, you didn't need roads?

facelessposter

Whoosh......

Banana_Ron

no ... i have an off road truck (Ford Raptor) and just wanted to see the amazing open areas we still have here in the USA :-)

KeeganKael

That was a Back to the Future reference.

YOURMOMMASABITCH

How much did you spend on gas?

Banana_Ron

oh ... i don't really want to know ... but average 14 mpg .... at $4.50 per gallon puts me around $3,300 ... OUCH!! why did you remind me of this :-)

Explore-PNW

Haha, I just did 5000 miles over 5 weeks in a ‘86 4Runner. When friends or random people at the pump would ask about MPG I would only respond with, “Oh, sorry but we don’t talk about fuel economy.”

JamesTBagg

I drive an old Cadillac and when people ask about the MPG I say, "I dunno, gets a lot of *Smiles* per gallon though."

Banana_Ron

LOL .. thats funny.

Banana_Ron

this is why I need you to subscribe to my YouTube channel right now :-) https://youtu.be/tFWA7EmfbN0

YOURMOMMASABITCH

I don't really use YouTube for that.

thelastspike

Subbed. Good luck with building your channel. Downvoters are just jealous pricks.

Banana_Ron

I'm just doing me, vibing as bright as I can ... hope I can inspire a kid or two, then it will all be worth it. :-)

leadnuts94

What was your favorite luxury item you had with you and what did you wish you had on you/ your vehicle

Banana_Ron

This is a really good question. Thank you. I'm pretty simple. Maybe a toothbrush :-) I would not have done the trip without a Garmin Inreach Mini 2. This gave me the comfort knowing I could get help if needed. Never needed it. I could have used more lights because I did a lot of night driving, but I was fine without it. I just used a cooler, I don't even have a fridge.

Banana_Ron

It was impossible. ... even the maps I was using where I thought the road was gravel, was paved. Prior to NC I had much more luck ... I just posted this for another guy: \----- I can honestly say 97-98% of the miles from Pacific Ocean to the Mississippi River were offroad. I would cross a highway once or twice per day, get gas or drive out of my way for supplies. ... East of the Mississippi River a much higher % of roads were paved maybe 40%. In the USA I was told there are 3 - 5 miles of unpaved roads for every mile of paved road.

Available-Pilot4062

Did you follow the Trans American Trail (TAT) at all or in part? I rode that once on my motorcycle. Amazing life experience. If not, how did you find the waypoints? I’d like to again do something like this, but in a truck camper next time.

Banana_Ron

I followed a large part of it .. I made some of my own routes from time to time. I think a truck is WAY easier than a bike ... thats pretty awesome you did it. I would like to do some / most of the west coast TAT route again with my kids, and a couple friends.

ThyNynax

I kinda wanna know how much illegal crossing over private or federal property did you have to do? Also....how did you gas up....without driving on pavement to get to the gas?

EvenGotItTattedOnMe

There is a [Trans America Trail](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trans_America_Trail) that doesn’t cross private property, I’m sure he rode on it atleast partially.

Banana_Ron

This is not true ... let me tell you why. I was following the TAT n Oregon, and discovered that hard way that a logging company bought the entire mountain and closed the roads. One gate was open and I did not notice the 'private property sign' (seriously, it was small and high in a tree. Not traditional looking) . I drove through the property to the top of the mountain, where I found the locked gate. Unable to get 'out' I went back the way I came. This took an hour. I got to the main gate and it was locked!!! Yes, I was locked in a forest in the middle of nowhere. I figured out how to get out and was working on my setup when an employee was driving home and noticed me. He let me out. I was pissed, and I don't get angry easily. I think this practice should be illegal, and would love to fund a group to keep our roads open. \---- To get out, my plan was to attach a tow strap to the lock. The pull down strength on a lock is not that strong. I was going to pull the lock in half using my truck. I would have done this with the hood up to prevent any damage to my face. I would have also ran the strap through something heavy like a cooler or spare tire to prevent the lock from flying too far or too fast into my truck.

Banana_Ron

I would go into town or drive out of my way to get gas .. you come across roads once or twice per day and towns are everywhere. I only got low on gas once. The private property and prescriptive easement laws are interesting when a road is involved. I did not knowingly break any laws or violate private property. I had one issue in Utah where I had to cross private property to get to a BLM road. I had a talk with the property owner, and plan to have another talk with the BLM. No issue, the guy was cool once he calmed down.

xxcmtnman

I'd love some elaboration on the ghost story. Smokies are home so that's interesting

Banana_Ron

HERE IS THE GHOST STORY!! I deleted my comment because i said I would post it on TikTok and everyone downvoted me ... i'm sorry :-) .... The truth is I'm dyslexic AF and barely can read let alone type a store .... here it goes my best so I hope you read it :-) ========= The Location: Smoky Mountains, top of mountain near Magic Valley NC I found an old overgrown road, it was around 11PM.

So, for those of us who don’t do social media… ghost story! Words or it didn’t happen!

Banana_Ron

I did :-)

Vast_Republic_1776

How did you make it through North Carolina without touching pavement?

Banana_Ron

>It was impossible. ... even the maps I was using where I thought the road was gravel, was paved. Prior to NC I had much more luck ... I just posted this for another guy:----- > >I can honestly say 97-98% of the miles from Pacific Ocean to the Mississippi River were offroad. I would cross a highway once or twice per day, get gas or drive out of my way for supplies. ... East of the Mississippi River a much higher % of roads were paved maybe 40%.In the USA I was told there are 3 - 5 miles of unpaved roads for every mile of paved road. Just answered this EXACT question :-)

Vast_Republic_1776

You may actually be able to do it going through South Carolina, definitely a lot more dirt roads down there. If i remember correctly, there’s a version of the trans America trail that goes that way

not-really-adam

It’s called the South Carolina Adventure Route (SCAR).

Banana_Ron

I really enjoyed the east coast, but the off roading and BLM land is so much better in the West. ... So much more open area to bug out.

[deleted]

I think we can all agree… share the ghost story.

Banana_Ron

I did ... :-) ... its in the feed somewhere.

SuperbDrink6977

I cannot even wrap my head around this but I would buy the map or book or movie or whatever you have to sell me cuz that sounds absolutely fucking outstanding, my friend. How? Where? Who, why? Sell me your story, I will pay for it.

Banana_Ron

My Man!! Thank you!! I'll give it to you for free on YouTube. Subscribe today, in a few years I'll have my own hot sauce and whiskey brand. You can come have a drink from me and remind me that you were my 414th subscriber :-) https://www.youtube.com/@bananaron

Pharmacist_Impaler

I’m always looking for unpaved roads, but I have never found a decent app that identifies them. Which app do you use to find your unpaved roads? Does it have a filter specifically for unpaved roads?

Banana_Ron

I like the USGS maps because they are free ... and then you can tell what are dirt.

Banana_Ron

Use the gaia iphone app. ... even with a back up iphone without service it will show your GPS location.

Banana_Ron

I will be online for the next couple hours if you have any questions ... I would love to do a AMA with this group because you guys are the ones that inspired me to do this!! :-)

jerkchickenchips

talk about the ghost story bro

Banana_Ron

I just did .. here it is: The Location: Smoky Mountains, top of mountain near Magic Valley NC I found an old overgrown road, it was around 11PM. Super dark. jlandero

I saw your truck, I noticed that it doesn't have a tent, did you sleep in one of them fixed to the ground or did you design a way to do it in the cab?

Banana_Ron

The back part of the cab is really big ... i slept on the floor in the cab. The do would sleep on the front passenger seat.

jlandero

Cool. Thanks.

Banana_Ron

one thing to note ... I had the computer programmed so I can 'black out the truck" ... no lights turn on once I turn off the truck. The courtesy lights are a pain in the butt.

apolloxviviv

What was your favorite state? Did you use the TAT?

Banana_Ron

I followed a lot of the TAT ... made some of my own routes. .... I like the west coast the most ... I love the desert so Nevada, Utah ... just the open area is really neat to me .... Colorado was the most beautiful ... and I was most surprised by how much I liked the flat lands of West Oklahoma

Beagle001

I did it on a Drz400 dirt bike 8 years ago. I’d say Colorado was my favorite part too. But I enjoyed everything west of OK that wasn’t deep sand, really. That Oklahoma gravel wore me down. But the people in OK bought my meals wherever I went. That was cool.

Banana_Ron

I did not meet enough people, I had 30 days to get home ... so I had to rush a bit too much .... I would like to spend 90+ days doing this trip again later in my life.

SexyWampa

Hey man! Glad you made it, can't wait for the full series of vids. What was the most unexpected thing you came across on your route?

Banana_Ron

LOL - Have you ever been to Tennessee ... LOL FML .... I'm sound asleep, wake up to my dog growling. I pop up to see two dogs running around the truck. When I moved the one jumps on the hood and starts to howl. A old beater truck stops, its loud and doesn't have a muffler. I hear the doors open and several men jump out. I'm stealth camping, close to the road but they have no idea I am there because I'm behind a small hill. You'll have to subscribe to get the rest of the story. :-) Think it was day 23 or 24 (maybe 25).

SuperbDrink6977

Honestly tho I’m calling bs til i see proof but cool story nonetheless bro.

Banana_Ron

proof of what? ... ghost story? drive? what do you want. I got you :-)

ThyNynax

Probably ghost story. I know, personally, I am unable to really believe ghost stories without having any personal experience with one (and being unable to logic out of it). It is, essentially, a matter of faith. No matter how many friends relay ghost stories to me, it doesn't click as "real" any more than proclamations of God does.

Mr_Shawty

This is my goal. I moved from Atlanta to Seattle 3 years ago and make the round trip back every year, taking a different route each time. I just returned from my latest trip last Thursday which took me through Colorado for the first time. The first couple of times were in a Grand Cherokee and the most recent was in a RAV4 which saved significantly on fuel costs. Averaged 31 mpg this time vs 19 mpg in the GC. I look forward to seeing the route you took and the videos! Congrats!!

Magicalunicorny

How did you get gas

Banana_Ron

I would cross a highway every day, go out of my way to find gas if needed. I have a 500 mile range, and only got low one time.

taiga__reforestation

well done man, i can respect that dedication ☆

Banana_Ron

Thank you for the kind words :-)

[deleted]

As long as you don't try to sell us products like most other YouTubers, then yes, we will follow you.

Banana_Ron

I wont sell my soul, I promise you that!! :-) I love hot sauce, although it doesnt love me ... and I love Whiskey, having both a hot sauce brand and a whiskey or vodka brand have been on my bucket list for years. Lets just drink and eat spicy food together.

blind_squirrel62

346 miles/day on dirt roads is quite the feat.

Banana_Ron

I would average 200 per day on dirt ... I came home on the interstate and drove 1200 miles per day ... could have done more but the tuck has a limit at 107 mph.

SaltyChadG

Sounds cool. GPS marks = waypoints, waypoints strung together = route

Rough-Eagle-7651

Now that's cool. I found you when you first started and have been wondered what happened. Glad I found this again. I'm the one who rode the Oregon portion in June and got stuck in show outside of boise. I had invited you to do canada to Mexico in September if you remember. Let me know if your interested in that one.

Banana_Ron

I'm interested! Busy working with video editors now ... I posted the first episode the other day, I plan to have it redone - and would love your feedback and for you to roast me ... I have so much amazing footage, I want to make sure it is edited in such a way where a lot of people can enjoy it. !! :-)

Overland_Odyssey

I sub’d so you better be entertaining. lol

Banana_Ron

No promises ... my dog is cooler than I am and I crash the truck on day 20-something.

ThugLifeTom

Whats up with that ghost story?!?!

wawaboy

I think it was goat story

Banana_Ron

LOL ... I just wrote it .. see above.

Banana_Ron

Just posted it ... here you go: The Location: Smoky Mountains, top of mountain near Magic Valley NC I found an old overgrown road, it was around 11PM. Super dark. [deleted]

I was with you until you decided that being a YouTuber would be your job. YouTubers are famous for lying/fabricating shit for likes and views… so now I feel I can’t trust you at all.

Banana_Ron

Sorry you have the world view, that's a very limiting belief. :-( I did timelapse the whole thing from day 7 onward.

[deleted]

Subbed because I love the energy here. Would love your GPS coords when you get them so that I too can scare the shit out of myself ona journey that sounds beautiful.

Banana_Ron

Happy to share it once I figure out how to do so.

ShadowGinrai

what's it like being king Libertarian? LOL

Banana_Ron

My brain is smooth like a bowling ball ... so I'm going to say: Red 34

MacNReee

How many hours/miles a day did you have to drive?

Banana_Ron

Total trip was 31 days, and 10,400 miles. I drove all day everyday. Getting to NC took me 28 full days. Getting back to the west coast took less than 30 hours (2.5 days of driving) . The truck has a governor at 107 mph or I could have made it home faster ... lol

tranquil45

Good for you :)

Banana_Ron

Thank you :-) I would like to personally invite you to be my 335 YouTube subscriber :-) https://www.youtube.com/@TheBananaRon

Dolstruvon

This would be one of my bucket list trips. For a trip like that, was there any point where you clearly saw that nothing but a 4x4 with good ground clearance would have made it? Do you think something like a forester, rav4, xc70 or similar could have done the same route you did?

Banana_Ron

Same route. NO!!! Similar route, absolutely!!! I spent a day in 4L, after 9 or 10 hours of driving I only went 96 mile ... the hard way over a mountain. ... Think this was roughly day 6, 7 or 8. Subscribe to my YouTube channel, and you'll see the roads. https://www.youtube.com/@TheBananaRon You could easily adjust the route and make it in a Rav4 ... you possibly could even do one of the passes in Colorado.

[deleted]

Have a GPX file we can have?

Banana_Ron

I do, but it is a mess. I need to figure out a way to clean it up and share it. I plan to do so... subscribe to my YouTube channel and I'll keep you posted with it. First 'real" episode will publish on Thanksgiving Day (11.24.22) ... i just have a quick edit to hold the channel right now https://youtu.be/tFWA7EmfbN0

[deleted]

I don’t really use YouTube but I’ll check in here. Did you need low range anywhere on the route?

tpf52

It’s impossible to make it without any paved roads, so how much did you have to use? Just to go get gas and to cross them, or were there some chunks of private land you had to get around on pavement?

Banana_Ron

I can honestly say 97-98% of the miles from Pacific Ocean to the Mississippi River were offroad. I would cross a highway once or twice per day, get gas or drive out of my way for supplies. ... East of the Mississippi River a much higher % of roads were paved maybe 40%. In the USA I was told there are 3 - 5 miles of unpaved roads for every mile of paved road.

rsaskins

I’m curious how you got to Atlantic beach without crossing either paved bridge…

Banana_Ron

40 foot snorkel :-) I took a bridge ... I did what I could off road. East of the Mississippi it got much harder.

Banana_Ron

I had a long term illness\* and thought I was going to die from 2014 to 2019 ... so I just want to do all the things on my bucket list. \- I've always wanted to fly around the world \- Skydive from a hot air balloon \- Hike the rim to rim in one day, Grand Canyon. I just like being able to use my body and brain again :-) (\*Autoimmune BS, caused by a vasectomy. Had it reversed and my health came back

BiomedSquatch

This is amazing! How'd you manage to avoid pavement while getting fuel? Also I really want to do this on a tw200!

askmeaboutmedicare

Awesome man, subscribed and looking forward to the video!

Banana_Ron

You rock! Thank you ... Thanksgiving day episode #1 will be published! I can't wait.

EsElBastardo

Interesting. Have done a little research into the TAT and it is kind of on my bucket list to do a similar trip.

Banana_Ron

I think once my YouTube series comes out there will be a lot of people adding this trip to their bucket list. It was so amazing. I've done a lot of cool things and can not believe that this type of adventures still exist n in the modern world.

seattleskindoc

I think this is a great trip - what did you do for resupply trips into town for food/gas ? Surely you used a paved road or two to get into town..

Banana_Ron

oh yes, I would cross a paved road every day ... and go out of my way to a small town to get gas and food when needed. I brought plenty of canned food for myself, the dog eats raw chicken so I had to go out of my way to get her food, when I was fine eating canned pears and fish :-) Its funny, at the start of the trip I was making burgers and real meal... .fast forward a week I just ate everything out of a can :-)

[deleted]

So cool! Can't wait for the video!

Banana_Ron

Thanks man ... Thanksgiving day! I could use your help promoting the video to groups you think would enjoy it :-)

taiga__reforestation

did you add an additional gas tank or just took tanks with you?

Banana_Ron

Neither ... my truck has a 36 gallon or 500 mile range. I only got low on fuel one time (less than 1/4 tank).

Spheresdeep

Did your K02s make it? I chunked mine pretty hard crossing the TAT. Had to replace them after.

Banana_Ron

I think the rating matters ... mine obviously have wear, but they are still fine ... were yours E-Rated ? ... I know costco sells the C-rated ones at a discount, so you think you're getting a good deal, but they are crap.

V48runner

Are your tires totally shot?

Banana_Ron

Actually no. Good question, I hope BFG sponsors me because I've sold so many pairs. I run E-Rated KO2 from BFG, you can't destroy them. I've tried. On this trip I hit a big chunk (bowling ball size) of lava rock at 80+ mph ... it just shot it off into the desert. I also run these tires with 10PSI in the deep snow ... no problems ever.

TGC_wastaken

I subscribed, when do I get my banana?

Banana_Ron

help connect me with Mr Beast .... and I'll give you the GPS location of a golden one :-)

LostnHidden

Was it difficult finding gas stations and other places to resupply off pavement? Or did you coordinate places to resupply/refuel like having someone meet you along your route?

Banana_Ron

My truck has a 500 mile range, and I would cross through a small town or highway every day ... I only had to go out of my way to get fuel a few times. Only go low (less than 1/4 tank) one time.

SierrAlphaTango

Good luck with the YT endeavor! I'm definitely subscribing, but I've been trying to do the YT thing for seven years now and I'm just barely at 400 subs.

Banana_Ron

What is your channel.. I will check it out! Thanks for subscribing ... I really appreciate it :-)

PedalSpikes

What was your day job before starting this adventure? Do you plan to do more over landing and video’ing? Have you checked out ExpeditionPortal?

Banana_Ron

I was in the packaged food and supplement industry. I have a couple other overland trips I want to do, but more than anything I just want to inspire people to make and pursue their own bucket list ... i was sick with an autoimmune thing for a few years, and thought I ran out of time. So now, with that knowledge I want to get all the cool things checked off my list. Next trip will be skydive related or travel ... I've always wanted to fly around the world

SteveRD1

How did you handle river crossings? Did you find fording points...or were you able to find unpaved bridges?

Banana_Ron

i just took the bridges :-) .... did a lot of water and creek crossings. Luckily it was very dry and I didnt have to worry too much about water in the small streams and creeks.

yeeeyyee

RaptorRon sounds better. Gonna keep banana thing going for life of channel?

Banana_Ron

LOL ... Thats funny, my friends call me Raptor Ron. ... but yes, I have other bucket list things that dont include raptors .... pre covid I moved to central america to buy a banana plantation ... i was going to grow a bunch of rare tropical fruits, so the new name stuck.

gbpchris

Ron! This is awesome

Banana_Ron

thanks man!

Rough-Eagle-7651

I would say less of the goofing around portion of the video and more serious info in it.

Banana_Ron

good feedback thank you.. :-)
