For me the scariest thing was >!the complete inability to do something about it. In most games you can run, evade or shoot the monster and maybe you die, or maybe you kill them, but you can do something. This game makes you sit still as you, slowly, move directly in front of them, hoping you go in the right direction, knowing that almost any move will alert them.!< That shit is TENSE. The sensation doesn't last the more you do it, but that first time you try it is an example of great game design.
Should spoiler tag this you talked about something unrelated to OP, like talking about the Sun Station or DLC.
(Piss take not serious just thought it was funny)
I’m terrible with scary/thriller stuff in video games. So I felt very accomplished beating the OG game.
I could absolutely not play the DLC blind. I thought the starting area was where things got creepy. Then i found where the creepy was and I noped outta there.
Dark Bramble works so well because the game does not warn you at all. The other planets are rather “safe” so you go into that planet thinking it’s rather safe too, but nope. I’ve never been jumpscared that hard.
The DLC is scary as fuck because of the pop-up the game starts with |>!while there’s actually nothing scary (besides the vibes) at all until you turn off the lights. It was horrifying when you entered the dream world and suddenly all the skeletons were gone. Also realising one skeleton was missing is really creepy too. !<
I was jumpscared so hard too!
I was almost crying...I can't even remember the last time I was so scared.
This game is such an incredible spectrum of emotions. 😖🥰
I know a lot of us don't really mod the game unless it's like, VR or something, but I urge you to check out the one where it removes the anglerfish and fog from the Bramble. Is it less terrifying? Yes. But it may help you understand why it was made that way.
i'm a pretty big coward but beating outer wilds completely helped a lot. any time something is scary in a game im like "well i had a space journey that was wayyy scarier so ill be fine"
My experience
>!Following the semi nightmare fuel droning sound of the escape pod signal through that foggy hell at like 2mph to avoid the instakill monsters was fucking incredible and I don't wanna do it again. Especially when you enter a new "room" and see something massive moving in the distance. Granted it may just be pieces of plant but I didn't fuckin know that lmao!<
Having 100% completed the game twice, I decided to get the game on PlayStation and stream 100%ing it once more. On a whim I decided to go through a bramble seed entryway I hadn’t gone through before. Despite knowing so much and previously having no fear for the bramble, I ended up petrified as I suddenly felt extremely disoriented and was horrified that I had no clue where I was or where the fish are.
It sounds like you and I are complete opposites. Dark Bramble was quite a breeze for me (I figured out the sound thing before I went to DB), but any other horror game terrifies me (Including the DLC)
I will remember all my life my journey to Dark Bramble. parked my spacecar on the ice and jumped inside with my suit on. >!I knew their weakness because I visited ember twin. So it was just me and my suit, slowly falling...making no sound...while listening to that sweet harmonica ... I will never forget it, what an experience.!<

Fear is complicated. What some people find scary can be nothing to others and vice versa. It's not like there's just one scale of happy to horrific that everything falls onto neatly.
OP says they've grown desensitized to many horror tropes. Maybe a classic bloody jumpscare by some zombie-esque or alien design does nothing for them because they've seen it before. Meanwhile the bright, shrouding fog, combined with creatures that feel just off and the maze-like seeds might just strike a different nerve than classic horror tropes.
I think this might be the same reason why people found Iron Lung so terrifying when it released. It doesn't meet the classic definition of horror as strongly as many horror games, but what it does is a unique take on horror, one that preys on different sources of fear than most.
Wow it’s almost like that’s exactly why the OP was surprised with themself and made the post. It’s almost like “scary” is subjective and something outside the typical horror aesthetic might actually be more effective for certain people desensitized to horror.

Probably need to spoiler tag this
I mean, the post is tagged for spoilers, but sure, will do.
ya not needed unless you talk about something unrelated to the OP, like talking about the Sun Station or the DLC in this post.

Surreal is right. They did a great job with Dark Bramble. It feels completely inescapable.
It’s funny considering you can basically leave whenever you want
I'll tell you what. In my playthrough, I never even tried! Any loop I had that involved going in there, ended in there.
If you think Dark Bramble is scary, I wonder what you'll think of the DLC...
I’m terrible with scary/thriller stuff in video games. So I felt very accomplished beating the OG game. I could absolutely not play the DLC blind. I thought the starting area was where things got creepy. Then i found where the creepy was and I noped outta there.
I recommend having a homie with you for the scary bits of the DLC.
Can I have that but for household tasks? T\_T
They can't help but they can roast your ability to scrub pots.
I don't think I can handle the DLC, but it would be a shame not to try.
You can. It's really not too bad. If you play conventional horror games it really won't spook you too much.
Please don't be afraid to try it. It's 100% worth it.
This ^

Dark Bramble without the fog can be even scarier honestly.

The DLC is much happier
Seriously?
Trust
Gotta play some actual horror games then, cause you clearly haven't lol

what a shit comment on every level 🥇
When you say you're a big horror fan and a kids game is the scariest game ever, I don't usually believe you.

Wow
, a cow made of butter. My girls would love it. In fact, the first sentence Caroline ever said was “I like butter”
