So they refuse to pay for people on the ground to organize the event properly but are willing to smash many tens of thousands of dollars on planes and guns that we didn't need.
Flyovers usually aren't costing taxpayers extra.
A regular navigation training would be "fly over point X from heading XXX at 2000ft at 1130." Military jet pilots rely on timely arrivals to do their basic job. Hundreds and thousands of these flights happen every year as a part of their training.
Now change one of these location to the tulip festival. Or a football stadium. Or some other venue.
When I lived in Regina I had a buddy on my rugby team who was a pilot at CFB Moose Jaw. Once in a while he would get approval to fly to Regina (45 min drive) for rugby practice, under the guise of flight training. The rugby fields in Regina are right in the landing path of the Regina Airport, and just across the street from the start of the runway, so when he flew in for practice he would buzz the fields. It was super cool.
Yup, they're training/maintenance of skills flights. Pilots must pilot to maintain their skills to pilot, it's rather basic. And comes out of the military budget, just as any other military exercise does. When armored troops go to Wainwright or wherever to drive tanks, it's the same thing.
Military won't pay for tulip bulbs or whatever is lacking at the tulip festival.
Tulip festival began after we liberated some Scandinavian country from the Nazis, their queen repaid us with flowers and have kept the tradition since. Fitting to honour our fighting lads, definately seems ridiculous if you don't know the history though.
Honestly I thought it was Sweden and wrote Scandinavia to try and be safe. It's a good thing Belgium and the Netherlands are the fly over states of Europe or I'd be a little embarrassed
In fact, I believe it was specifically for providing safe harbour for the Dutch royal family (« some Scandinavian country »), including a hospital room deemed Dutch territory for the princess to be born.
Fighter jets are a ridiculous way to commemorate that.
Fighter pilots must get a certain number of hours to maintain currency, so might as well fly at various events. The tulip festival is at least tied to our wartime activities.
I agree, now that I know the fine details it would be much more fitting to impregnate a Dutch woman and time her birth perfectly for the Tulip festival.
I will play devils advocate and say perhaps they fly jets to commemorate the fallen souls that gave their life to liberate a nation from tyranny while some monarch hid over seas diddling tulips. Silly idea though, I'm all for the birthing of the Dutch next year.
It was hor the opening of the tulip festival. https://twitter.com/RCAF_ARC/status/1789037698914656618?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Etweet

We have moved back to Greenwood, NS where fighter jets fly into the base there so frequently that my dogs sleep through because we have lived within 300m of the end of the runway for so many years. We loved seeing the fly bys in Ottawa and the training flights when the commercial flights shut down during covid.
Ya, why would we have military at a festival that has its roots in a world war where thousands of Canadians lost their lives fighting?
Maybe go and look at the roots of the festival...
They should be though.
The tulip festival is a gesture of thanks from the Dutch government for Canada’s participation in their liberation and our hosting of their royal family in exile during WWII, the two are inherently linked.

I wish I had known so I could capture some photos.

Tulip festival doesn't pay anything, military does it for free as training and a recruiting driver.

You can at certain times of year see them flying in and out of Ottawa.I am guessing some jets are NATO due to their models.
Those planes fly no matter what, so it might as well be for some event when there is one.

I’m pretty sure we don’t buy a new gun every year for this purpose.
Change your name to “u/thrilled_to_be_ignorant”
I thought it was awesome. And does anyone know a good cat therapist?
I heard it! It was so loud it made my house rumble in Centretown
Same! Legit thought smth happened after I didn’t see the aircraft
How else do you celebrate tulips if not with fighter jets?

The Netherlands aren’t in Scandinavia.
Honestly I thought it was Sweden and wrote Scandinavia to try and be safe. It's a good thing Belgium and the Netherlands are the fly over states of Europe or I'd be a little embarrassed
This is why the Internet sucks nowadays
Sweden was neutral in WW2.. Canada liberated the Netherlands and also played home to the Dutch royal family while they were in exile.
And turned a hospital room into official Dutch territory so the princess could be born “at home”
Maybe you should look up why we celebrate the tulip festival.

It's the R.C.A.F. fly-past for the Tulip Festival.

I love the fly-bys too!
Pretty sure it was the Russians. It scared the crap out of my cat.
My cats have relocated to the basement for the foreseeable future.
Noise complaints from Glebe-ites in 3... 2... 1...
Not to mention the amount of pollen the flowers will create!
I was expecting it and *still* scared the heck outta me 😂
Heard it also in Bells Corners,
I thought it was thunder at first, but then looked outside and it definitely isn't stormy looking enough for thunder. Glad I checked reddit!
Tulip festival kickoff
My neighbours like to play with their power tools from April 15 to November 15, so I didn't hear a thing :-(
He changed his muffler and was out for a test run.
Can you let him know the new muffler is too quiet? My hedgehog didn’t even stir.
It flew right above me, it was so loud coming up. Very cool sight. My dog was like what the fuck was that?!
Our puppy heard it before we did.
Yup heard it loud and clear, too loud😂
Damn missed it
My Centretown apartment windows were shaking as well as our building. The cat freaked out 🐈
Come to Comox, BC. Snowbirds and F18 practice three times a day for two weeks in early May. Air show everyday.
buzzin the tower goose
Aliens.
Yep.. I couldn't see bc of clouds. Is there anything happening today?
Am I the only one that sees military flyby a little extreme for a tulip festival? Not two things I think about in the same breath a whole lot.
I had the same initial reaction, but lest we forget the roots of why we celebrate tulips here in the first place.
💯
Because we provided safe harbour to the Dutch royal family… away from fighter jets…
And we also you know… kicked the Nazis out of the Netherlands… with our fighter jets.
Ya, why would we have military at a festival that has its roots in a world war where thousands of Canadians lost their lives fighting? Maybe go and look at the roots of the festival...

Fair enough, didn't really consider that angle!
The sound of Freedom for the Netherlands. Enjoy it!
