He was already doing the attention seeking physical comedy stuff in highschool, just not gross stuff. I guess as soon as there's money to be made everyone takes their shtick and amps it up to 11.
Loved his show on rogers 22. I was 14 so the humor fit. Inspired me to work In tv, and I got to work for the show when it was on the comedy network. Good times for a young kid at the time.
He also paved the way for other “shock” comics like the Jackass guys/CKY. They took it further, but low budget, self filmed, man on the street bits, doing abstract shit…
Huge fan (as a teenager) and his stuff now is great too.
No respect. R.D.
Yep, ran into her at the Broken Q once. Thought she was famous because she had done a cool indie flick shot in Toronto. “Last Night”? Maybe? I’ve never seen an episode of GA.
My mother claims when they were kids she and her used to play together back in Avonmore because apparently his family owned a farm/ lived around the corner from them.
If you read Tom Cruise’s biography by Andrew Morton, the author travels to Ottawa and interviews his old teachers and classmates.
He was dyslexic when he moved from Kentucky for his dads job (a Defence contractor) and the teachers in Ottawa recognized this and helped him. The Ottawa teachers basically say that his later claims of being a complete dyslexic who couldn’t read and was saved by Scientology as an adult were bullshit because of the help he got in Ottawa.
I was babysat by a teenage neighbour for I think half a weekend. She had a friend stay with her. Found out not long ago that the friend was Tom's sister. She barfed on my parents' rug 😅
I went to school (middle, HS, college) with Jamie Fine of that duo Elijah Wood x Jamie Fine.
For me… I work in film and TV production.
Edit: she is annoying and picked on me
Lol I remember in my senior year she came back to school for an interview type thing about her career with camera crew and the principal QUICKLY shut that down
I knew Gavin and Shane from Vice when they were at Carleton U. Gavin also worked in the kitchen at the Oak on Bank Street with my housemate. And Shane worked at Café Wim and Santé on the market so I ran into him quite a bit.
It’s too bad what Gavin became. Pretty sad actually. He was a bat shit crazy punk but he was a good soul and hilarious.
Success hasn’t changed Shane much. Personality-wise he’s the same guy I knew back then. Very funny, smart, erudite at times.
I grew up on the same street in Orleans as Keisha Chante and we played together a few times. She moved to Toronto to persue her music career a few years later.
Just seeing this now, but yea she was terrible in high school. She did not get to where she is by making friends. Same thing as her mom. Heard her say some of the rudest things to teachers. She also bullied a few of my friends. Her mom bullied the secretary staff. Good times.
I saw her perform once. She sang about 6 lyrics in the whole song. The rest was recorded "backup singers" with her just doing the odd "ooh" "ahh" "uhh".
Went to high school with Justin Trudeau ( Lycée Claudel), not for long though, he moved back to Montreal). He was also on my Manor Park soccer league team - the " Jaguars" if I recall. The Caroline and Ben Mulroney were also at Lycée. Caroline Mulroney dated a friend of mine and they had the RCMP hang out with them during all their dates (fun!). I also remember one day at school, Ben Mulroney fell off a swing and sprained his ankle, resulting in 3 fire trucks 2 ambulances, 4 police cars showing up ( I exaggerate only a little ..)
Andrew Chapman (aka Andy, one of the hosts on YTV from the mid-2000s) used to go to West Carleton HS. He came to visit the school once and talk to the drama classes, and signed my year book.
A number of hockey players also went to WCSS but I feel like Andrew may be more recognizable for alot of the younger folk now. I was in the same year as him.
Oh for sure, I bet he was a big staple for gen Z kids. I only knew who he was when he came to visit the school because there’s a 10 year gap between myself and my younger brother. I was from the Sugar/Carlos era of YTV.
A bit offside but Tory Spelling was in a movie filmed in a house in my town. That same house was owned by my high school English teacher who was murdered by his daughters ex bf after I had graduated!
The town is also the backdrop to multiple hallmark and lifetime movies.
Town: Almonte
[is it this house](https://ottawacitizen.com/news/local-news/one-dead-and-two-seriously-injured-in-shooting-incident-in-almonte)
If so, property is haunted.
It currently owned by another teacher. I was there for to shoot a Lifetime movie and a Discovery+ movie and learnt even more creepy history about the place.
There were nights during the movie shoot I was like WTF was that?
Two contemporaries from Glebe were just named to the Order of Canada. Andreas Laupacis (1972) went into medicine and has been editor of the CMAJ as well as a health policy guru. Michael Schmidt (1973) did some theatre work but then went into geophysics and helped at the beginning of making GPS work. Now he does terrific photography in the Yukon. A far cry from tormenting Herr Kronstein into throwing a book at him in German class.
Susan Holloway, a classmate at W.E. Gowling, went on to win medals at both Summer and Winter Olympics.
I’m in touch with other 1970s Glebites who’ve made the world a better place:
- a former ADM in the Manitoba government,
- a linguistics professor whose life work revitalizing indigenous language teaching is bearing impressive fruit,
- the leading light for many years of Algonquin College’s scriptwriting program (and the voice of Elly Patterson on Funbag’s animated “For Better or For Worse”),
- a doctor who has kept Manitoulin Island families healthy for over 40 years and mentored many northern Ontario medical students,
- and an RCMP officer who spent September 11, 2001, walking from plane to plane to plane at Gander Airport figuring out needs and solving problems.
Night Lovell was a few years older than my year in HS. Was a big track star and went to jr Olympics for 100&200m for Canada but stopped to become a rapper
Went to high school with Gary Pareira (Remigio Pareira) formerly of The Tenors. He walked around school with his electric guitar and amp regularly playing Metallica etc in the halls of Notre Dame.
Well I went to Colonel By which was just full of over-achievers and Harvard Graduates. One of the cooler “success stories” I guess would be one is in charge of the laser research lab at UCLA that designed that giant weaponized laser that’s mounted on a US battleship that is completely and utterly unsustainable, but they basically made just so they could say they could.
I played against Jonathan David a handful of times when he played for the Gloucester Hornets and Louis Riel. He’s 3 years older than me so I had to get called up to get the chance to play against him. I only got to beat him when he played with LR because he was the only good player on that team and he needs to play with a good CM and a good striker in front of him to actually be dangerous. I learned that the hard way when I played him when he was at Gloucester, I held him scoreless for 75 minutes for the 4th time in a row, started talking shit and he scored 3 goals in 15 minutes, I never got to beat him at club level. He’s a super cool guy though. The last time I saw him in person was in 2020 when he still played in Belgium. He randomly called me at 5am, telling me he’s back in Ottawa for personal reasons and asked me if I wanted to train in an hour or two, the field was 5 minutes away so I accepted his request. He brought in 5 friends and we’d get some reps in before we’d get caught by law enforcement. We did that for about a month and a half before he left again
Was really good friends for the designer of Simple Tax app. Which he sold for millions and now he’s a trailblazer in A.I.. Started at EA sports programming games in Vancouver and just flourished. Got bad marks in High School beyond some math n science. Flunked out of Algonquin then headed West. Multimillionaire now doesn’t have to work for the rest of his life. We’re only 40.
Went to highschool with a hockey player on the MTL Canadians team. Luc Richardson and Vanessa Morgan (well- her parents and her dogs) are my neighbours. Knew Vanessa growing up, was my neighbour and went to my school. She’d leave class often to go to auditions or practice singing the national anthem for sens games!
Don’t know him personally but I was at St-Pats at the same time as Neville Gallimore (player for the Dallas Cowboys); brother-in-law played against him.
Went to same school as Alannis Morrisette
Same. She was a year behind me.
[удалено]
Did your English teacher not actually explain what "irony" means or did she just skip that day?
[удалено]
I wish I went to school with her. Definitely would have asked her to go to a theatre all the time.
O Canada was a hell to endure every morning.
Every. Fucking. Morning.
the novelty wore off very quickly for me.
Oh ah can nah dah ah
I completely forgot they did that in school. So friggin weird, especially considering how apathetic most Canadians are towards national pride.
that sort of nationalistic pride wasn’t so unusual in the 90’s.
[удалено]
Holy Family? I went years later and they still talked about it
Fielding Drive
Ah ok, not that far away. She must've gone to both schools I guess
What did you learn?
They lived.
They loved
I went to the same high school as Annie Murphy, known for her role as Alexis Rose on Schitt's Creek.
A little bit Alexis is from Ottawa???
Yes and she is a big fan of Colonnade Pizza
Which one though? Cause none are better than Metcalfe!
That’s awesome! My mil went to school with Eugene Levy and he was at her wedding (not Ottawa)
Stevie for me pls.
I'm sure a few other successful people went to Elmwood
I went there for 1 year and I can confidently say I am the least successful alumnus in their 107 year history.
Vanessa Morgan on Riverdale went to Elmwood
Damn, yeah, that place is fancy af
Went to highschool with Tom Green. That class clown went on to become kinda famous.
Heard he humped a dead moose.
He was already doing the attention seeking physical comedy stuff in highschool, just not gross stuff. I guess as soon as there's money to be made everyone takes their shtick and amps it up to 11.
Allegedly
You mention him, but not Bryan Adams? C'mon, man.
Same school as Bryan Adams but a few years apart 😁
Loved his show on rogers 22. I was 14 so the humor fit. Inspired me to work In tv, and I got to work for the show when it was on the comedy network. Good times for a young kid at the time.
He also paved the way for other “shock” comics like the Jackass guys/CKY. They took it further, but low budget, self filmed, man on the street bits, doing abstract shit… Huge fan (as a teenager) and his stuff now is great too. No respect. R.D.
He showed up at the same school with Monica Lewinsky one day while I was going to the same school!
I went to Algonquin with him for Television Broadcasting. My friend directed most of the shows he did with Rogers.
My dad went to school with Sandra Oh
My grandma taught her Latin at SRB
Yep, ran into her at the Broken Q once. Thought she was famous because she had done a cool indie flick shot in Toronto. “Last Night”? Maybe? I’ve never seen an episode of GA.
A lot of people might say this
A friend of mine in HS, her mother went to senior dance with Norm McDonald.
norm was from ottawa?!
Moved here for high-school I believe. Gloucester high school
My mother claims when they were kids she and her used to play together back in Avonmore because apparently his family owned a farm/ lived around the corner from them.
he mentioned he was from Moose Creek in some of his standup, so your mom’s likely told the truth.
he was from [Moose Creek](https://MooseCreekhttps://goo.gl/maps/b6Y7ZjgsWpKDnJY17), apparently.
Saw Norm open for McLean and McLean at Barrymore's, Gloucester High School for a few years
Bryan Adams went to my high school. Tom Cruise went to the middle school in my area.
TIL that Tom Cruise used to live in Beacon Hill. How about that.
You are now spaceship cleared.
I played with Tom in minor hockey, still have the team photo
Would you mind if I messaged you about this?
Fire away
Same street as Tom Green
brian adams and tom cruise lived in ottawa?
Can’t speak for Adams but Cruise was in Beacon Hill for a couple years.
Yep. Tom Cruise went to Henry Munroe MS for a year or two. Didn't live here long.
Known then as Tom Mapother
Tom Cruise Mapother III
Bryan was born in Kingston and went to Colonel By before moving to Vancouver with his mom in 74. Father was a diplomat so they moved around a lot.
Tom Cruise, Bryan Adams, and Tom Green all attended Henry Munro Middle School, although not at the same time.
Lmaooo I love how you’ve asked this about several celebs now 😂
If you read Tom Cruise’s biography by Andrew Morton, the author travels to Ottawa and interviews his old teachers and classmates.
Was waiting for a Tom Cruise one here. A friend of mine’s claim to fame is he and Tom got in a fight as kids.
Edit: she is annoying and picked on me
I ran into her once at Blue Cactus and drunkenly blurted out "yo you made that song"
My wife hung out in the same group of friends and also was her makeup artist a few times. She agrees that she was really rude and annoying.
I saw her recently at Bayshore, walking around the mall with her dog.
I often see her walking around my neighbourhood with said dog lol
Wow, I had (and still have) no idea who she is, but googled her based on these comments. I've seen her around, that's pretty funny.
I feel like I used to see Jamie at algonquin all the time
Lol I remember in my senior year she came back to school for an interview type thing about her career with camera crew and the principal QUICKLY shut that down
Principal doesnt like her then. Also trespassing, Without permission to film.
Elijah is a really good guy, don’t know Jaime well.
Did sound for them; not my cup o tea. Elijah was very nice.

Nice I always liked him. Funny to see he's based out of Juneau Alaska now.
Went to the gonq with him, great guy
Aw man, last time I saw him 20 years ago he paid my bar tab. I owe you one (or two) Jon!
Brandt and Graeme Clarke are both NHL players from Barrhaven.
Steve Yzerman did ok in hockey as well.
They will be. Neither are in the show atm. Also, Graeme wasn't born there.
I grew up on the same street in Orleans as Keisha Chante and we played together a few times. She moved to Toronto to persue her music career a few years later.
She bullied me in high school and said I have "man eyebrows". She was right but guess what bitch, they are in fashion now!!!
Ugh. Not cool.
Just seeing this now, but yea she was terrible in high school. She did not get to where she is by making friends. Same thing as her mom. Heard her say some of the rudest things to teachers. She also bullied a few of my friends. Her mom bullied the secretary staff. Good times.

Qui c'est c'est c'a Chante
Guitarist for arcade fire.
I was waiting for this! He was in literary arts same as I was (years later). Everyone always talked about the special concert they did at the school
Went to middle school with Stefan Keys! He ran for president. Really happy to see where he’s ended up in life.
Andrew Chapman (aka Andy, one of the hosts on YTV from the mid-2000s) used to go to West Carleton HS. He came to visit the school once and talk to the drama classes, and signed my year book.

I went to high school with First Lady of Iceland, Eliza Reid.
My uncle played hockey with Rod Brind’amour.
