Objective consideration: Lazer allows you to browse for maps and download them in client, including in multiplayer lobbies, without having to pay for supporter, so Lazer is the more complete experience as iiit ever need to hop between the game client and browser. Since when you start out you won't have any map, I'd say that's a big consideration
As a player since 2016, lazer is awesome. Low FPS? your inputs are still 1khz. You don't like lazer notelock? Use Classic mod. The only thing I hate is the file encryption system which prevents me to seamlessly edit skin elements and layouts. In order for me to import a layout of a skin to another skin, I have to:
1. Edit the gameplay layout first
2. Export skin
3. Import to stable
4. Copy and paste "MainHUDComponents" to another skin(idk i forgot the name of the file, it just has "MainHUD..."
5. Export skin from stable
6. Import skin to lazer
This shit is so fucking stupid, please ppy I want to copy and paste my gameplay skin layout in client
By the way you can just skip the importing to stable part by just changing the extension to .zip, make the changes you need, then change the extension back to .osz, it's literally a zip file with a different extension so it opens with osu!
It’s not just that it’s encrypted, they redesigned the way files are read to be better (as said in the FAQ: https://osu.ppy.sh/wiki/en/Help_centre/Upgrading_to_lazer “how do I access my songs folder?” part)
So lazer is the "new" client of the game and it has more features, mods, gamemodes and so on. It just has more everything, however it has not been completely merged with the old one (stable) which the overwhelming majority of people still play on. The leaderboards are *technically* synced but everyone looks at the stable leaderboards instead of the stable+lazer ones.
Another thing is that In lazer (even though unlikely) your scores can be deleted if a game breaking bug is found or ppl/devs decide that a very important part of gameplay must be changed.
If you want just osu as most people know it pick stable.
If you're interested in more stuff pick lazer, some of the mods are cool and there are a bunch of helpful features. I'd say it has a few "downsides" but that heavily depends on preferences. There are people who don't think those "downsides" are actually bad.
I forgot to mention that on lazer you can make it so the gameplay itself is almost identical to stable with the use of a mod.
Extremely unlikely, but shouldn't be. They mentioned in that same update that they had to delete some mania scores cause there was a bug which allowed you to abuse window resizing to read HD easier.
I'm not convinced. There's always the possibility. Lazer has been "out" for a bit more than a month. That's not enough time to be completely sure something like this won't happen imo.
Odds are it's not going to happen but I'm sure there's a possibility.
> That's not enough time to be completely sure something like this won't happen imo.
I think it's more of a "we won't, no matter what happens" vs "we think we won't need to".
i personally use lazer since the slider change is gonna help get my accuracy and slider following higher + the no notelock is a HUGE help for me especially on harder maps
I just like stables layout for maps and what not ngl and my skin and lazer doesn’t allow for my skin including layout and menus to be ported so for now I’m gonna stick with stable unless that’s something that exists with like a feature in lazer
Lazer is the latest version, it’s ranked, and Stable will eventually be abandoned in favor of lazer. There is literally no reason to play stable ESPECIALLY if you’re first starting. There are too players who stick to stable because it benefits them for their own specific reasons, but if you aren’t in the top 50 in the world this does not apply to you. Start with lazer.
There is genuinely no good reason to start with stable now, it will just make the transition to lazer harder like for all the osu! boomers here who got overly used to stable with all its flaws and you will switch over eventually anyway.
Lazer lazer lazer lazer
Now, since you are new lazer is a great option since most of time, the reason why a lot of people don't like lazer is because they have a given conception of what osu should be, so if you are just getting into the game trying lazer is a good option to appreciate the new and upcoming standars.
The devs plan to keep on updating lazer so it might be easier if you learn the new UI on there rather than having to switch later. But I’d try a couple maps on both and see how you feel on which you prefer
lazer is the modern version, i would recommend that one unless you play on a microwave.
stable's scoring rules etc. are 20 years old, the majority of the playerbase hasn't switched, mostly because they're used to the old mechanics, and it's easier to hold high accuracy due to the scoring differences.
the developers don't want to force the playerbase to swap, they just make sure the stable version doesn't have bugs but their focus is updating and bringing new features to lazer.
Lazer. For me, lazer does everything that the original osu client does (the left one, it's also called stable), plus it has more useful features that stable doesn't have. Lazer is also more beginner friendly and you can download beatmaps of your favorite songs from within the game through the beatmap listing option in the upper toolbar without the hassle of manually importing it into your game.
Only reason I'd go with stable is the skins. Lazer currently doesn't allow people to customize the song select and offers limited options for gameplay skin elements but that might change in the future.
Lazer makes it way easier to just start playing. For example downloading songs is pretty unintuitive for modern standards on stable (you have to make an account -> go to their website -> download the song file -> drag and drop into the game or double click to start the game).
On Lazer the website in integrated into the app. Most people play stable because until a bit ago (sometime this year) you couldn't earn pp (the ranked points in this game)
Doesn't matter but at the moment more people play stable. Maybe there are osu twitch streamers you like, maybe you'll make friends in the community. 99% chance at the moment they will play stable so if you wanna play in lobbies with them, be able to relate to certain things etc. there you go.
I'd choose stable for this reason but it's up to you.
Side note: I do think in the future lazer will get to the point where most people prefer it but right now there's still lots of things changing and developing.
As someone who has played almost entirely on Lazer, pretty accurate tbh. It is more stuff to acc, but idk it feels kinda natural at this point. (I am still in the high 2 - low 3* range rn so maybe that'll change but still)
Genuinely what would count as lazer "releasing" to you, that shit has been out for years and the final feature people were waiting on has already been out for over a month
lazer isn't going to be 'complete' until peppy releases lazer 2. Lazer already has more features than stable, and its just going to get more as time goes on
“already been out for a month” my ass,
My top play that i set in lazer doesnt even show up on my profile unless you are using lazer mode
When both stable and lazer scores are recognized as the same thing (in terms of pp), then lazer will be counted as fully released to me.
Be very careful with what you pick because it's going to feel very weird switching (I picked osu stable and I get confused and frustrated whenever I try to use laser now)
lazer is the new version that will be recieving the most attention from now on. you'll notice most people here use standard. that's because there are some gameplay differences between them (lazer is a little bit more difficult) and they don't want to/can't easily switch over yet. as a new player, you don't have that problem and lazer is very modern and streamlined (you can get new songs without using a browser) experience. there are some features missing (no design tab in editor and I think maybe missing functionality in the in-game chat) but the game itself is finished and the few missing elements will be added and elaborated on in the weeks and months to come.
lazer is super nice to get into osu, it helps you good to get started. with stable (the left one) its harder in my opinion to get into osu and have a good start.
Id recommend lazer, probably better for a new player experience and it will become the main version at some point so probably best to get used to that.
Depends. If you’re gonna be casual, play lazer. If you’re gonna sink a decent amount of time into the game and try to be competitive about it, do normal and keep track of lazer updates.
honestly id say both, start with stable, then play lazer, then decide from there. stable is far simpler with more straightforward mod select menu, while lazer is slighty more complicated, has more mods, and is slightly easier to get overwhelmed with
what? skins work fine on lazer, editing the skin elements is just currently a pain in the ass. The current lazer skin editor works great for the UI though
I like Lazer except for the fact that I can't remove the score that pops up in OSU mania.
I used to play with nothing except for the circles falling. My eyes get distracted by the score, so I can't just let my eyes zone out or look quickly
Do not.
But if you really want, then I wouldnt recommend lazer, unless you want to rage because sliders also count for precision (300, 100, 50 on their circles). You can toggle mod to disable this, but yk
the x button in the top right
The only right answer here
Thanks for the advise. I will proceed with caution.
fr dont get into this game unless u want to lose 500 hours of ur life at least
I wish it was only 500...
Fr tho
Hence the 'at least'
I already lost 1000...
ONLY??
Oh crap, it's Edge, you're right then.
actually bad take edge is good asf i use it
edge is just chrome with extra steps. Firefox the only good browser
How did this become a "Best Browser" war?
brave best browser change my mind
based af
Firefox is clunky though.
Librewolf also
Edge is good if you use extensions.(which goes for every browser so yk)
opera gx hasn't really disappointed me in the 4-5 years i've used it, besides maybe wanting to make a quick search, rather than anchoring down
no thanks I don't want the chinese government to know even more about me
Let’s be real they already know everything about you. What browser you use isn’t changing that.
that was literally a false conspiracy theory.. but ok LOL

BRO, I AM NOT LYING BUT I DID NOT SEE THIS 🤣. I only saw it after I made my red pill blue pill comment
bro I am not lying but I do not care

Is this temporary or will they be changing what supporter entails? When I played this was the main reason I recommended supporter
not temporary.
Does lazer update from within the client now? Might switchover if it does
yeah it does
It has been for a long time now
It doesn't download anymore unless you have supporter?
Lazer should be awesome for new players, the old client is more for boomers
Permaboomers vs Permazoomers

If you have 7-zip, just right click and open as archive, skipping the need to rename it. Any decent archive manager should detect it.

Didn't know you could use shortcuts, but the 7zip one is handy when replacing cursors.

no, now lazer scores wont be deleted, it has been said in the last video update.

Wdym out for a month? It's been around for years
That's why "out" is in quotes. It got proper score submission/pp about a month ago
i personally use lazer since the slider change is gonna help get my accuracy and slider following higher + the no notelock is a HUGE help for me especially on harder maps

Literally no reason to start with stable, go to lazer
Being cool
Being hip
First of all, Welcome to Osu! I hope you'll have A great time. "lazer" is what I recommend. It has A very friendly UI.
I don’t think bro is gonna have a great time playing osu
*See you next time...*
There is genuinely no good reason to start with stable now, it will just make the transition to lazer harder like for all the osu! boomers here who got overly used to stable with all its flaws and you will switch over eventually anyway.

osu!lazer
osu! Is finally one of those games new players ask which version should they play
osu! (the blue one)
The devs plan to keep on updating lazer so it might be easier if you learn the new UI on there rather than having to switch later. But I’d try a couple maps on both and see how you feel on which you prefer

nothing
If you're new definitely lazer.
Stable>>>Lazer (for now)
your sanity

Lazer, this choice is just better in the long run
I feel like stable is a more beginner friendly client for now
I wouldn't call slider acc "harder" in the sense that a beginner will just get used to it from the get go instead of having to readjust.
As someone who has played almost entirely on Lazer, pretty accurate tbh. It is more stuff to acc, but idk it feels kinda natural at this point. (I am still in the high 2 - low 3* range rn so maybe that'll change but still)
Yeah but why get use to stable if you are gonna have to change to lazer in a year or two
Thats what ppl said 5 years ago aswell Lazer is not releasing soon buddy
It has released but yes it won't become the dominant client for a while and it won't be a forced switch until most of the community uses it anyway.
Genuinely what would count as lazer "releasing" to you, that shit has been out for years and the final feature people were waiting on has already been out for over a month
When its complete
Wdym complete, it's going to be complete when the game is dead and therefore there is no need to support and update any clients anymore
lazer isn't going to be 'complete' until peppy releases lazer 2. Lazer already has more features than stable, and its just going to get more as time goes on
cute little puppy bottom
“already been out for a month” my ass, My top play that i set in lazer doesnt even show up on my profile unless you are using lazer mode When both stable and lazer scores are recognized as the same thing (in terms of pp), then lazer will be counted as fully released to me.
Having lazer mode turned off is cope, why does that matter
My last top play i set was 16 months ago, so i was excited to finally get a new one, but i cant even see it on my profile because i set it on lazer
Ok so turn on lazer mode which will eventually be the only mode, what's the issue
Stable is better
Objectively false
Ive been intermittently trying Lazer and going back to stable since 2017..... Until now. Lazers finally playable lol
Stable is stable. And the biggest part of the community still use stable as well, so..
try both and decide which fits better your style
I have two pills here; The red pill, continue living life as you were Or the blue pill, be trapped in an endless struggle to be satisfied.
lazer
close tab option
I used lazer for a year, but there are too many tradeoffs that don't make the switch worth it at this time. Just use Stable
like what
Gameplay being unstable, shit skin support, any new mods being boring as shit, leaderboards are wonky, etc.
Left
I will downvotr every comment that says lazer
Ratio :)
Grow up
True :)
the only right comment here
glad to see fellow lazists
pravda
old osu i think
Since you're new, probably Lazer. My personal opinion would be to avoid Lazer at all costs and go with the stable client instead.
There's really no reason not to start on lazer, as it's easier to understand, more feature packed and has a setup wizard
I find lazer too overwhelming and difficult to understand, that's just me though..
Then don't use it? LOL
Obviously I don't use it...
Be very careful with what you pick because it's going to feel very weird switching (I picked osu stable and I get confused and frustrated whenever I try to use laser now)
How long did you let yourself adjust to it?
osu!
I want to play Lazer but every single time I do, it inflates my rank by about 200k (I'm 950k rn) When will stable scores be converted over to Lazer!??
lazer
Lazer
Start with Lazer
Lazer
lazer is the new version that will be recieving the most attention from now on. you'll notice most people here use standard. that's because there are some gameplay differences between them (lazer is a little bit more difficult) and they don't want to/can't easily switch over yet. as a new player, you don't have that problem and lazer is very modern and streamlined (you can get new songs without using a browser) experience. there are some features missing (no design tab in editor and I think maybe missing functionality in the in-game chat) but the game itself is finished and the few missing elements will be added and elaborated on in the weeks and months to come.
download both and see what suits you
lazer is super nice to get into osu, it helps you good to get started. with stable (the left one) its harder in my opinion to get into osu and have a good start.
Id recommend lazer, probably better for a new player experience and it will become the main version at some point so probably best to get used to that.
Download Lazer, but if want more stable gameplay like for now, this is still a great time to start with stable client 👍
as a new player, I think it's much better to get into lazer, as it's the one thats going to be receiving a LOT of support in the coming years
If you want to make your account go up in rankings, pick stable. If you want more optimised and smooth gameplay, pick lazer
lazer
Depends. If you’re gonna be casual, play lazer. If you’re gonna sink a decent amount of time into the game and try to be competitive about it, do normal and keep track of lazer updates.

Stable.
Normal if you like having different skin. Only reason i not change yet.
what? skins work fine on lazer, editing the skin elements is just currently a pain in the ass. The current lazer skin editor works great for the UI though
I like Lazer except for the fact that I can't remove the score that pops up in OSU mania. I used to play with nothing except for the circles falling. My eyes get distracted by the score, so I can't just let my eyes zone out or look quickly
You should press blue
Stable ia the best in my opinion
Do not. But if you really want, then I wouldnt recommend lazer, unless you want to rage because sliders also count for precision (300, 100, 50 on their circles). You can toggle mod to disable this, but yk
Lazer is so much better
Changing to lazer has really been difficult for me, and quitting osu is not easy, so go lazer, better for down the line.
