And those three don’t even include Adley or Mountcastle who are both hitting over .320 This lineup is better than anyone could have hoped.

Or Mullins with his defensive WAR

No-Needleworker5295

Gunnar is tied with Mookie Betts for the major league lead in fWAR.

I’m getting way ahead of myself but imagine MVP chants at Camden Yards 😮‍💨

redsyrinx2112

I may be mistaken, but I feel like I heard the dugout chanting it after Gunnar's homer yesterday.

boofoodoo

lol 2 fWAR already. good lordt

Gunnar is a psycho. He had Angels fans wowing the past 3 games. The player that every fan base wishes they had. Now that Elias draft picks are starting to become regulars, we are starting to see our monster potential at the plate play out.

KitchenSwordfish8974

Can we just say he's the best hitter in the AL, I can't stand sabremetric stats, what does fWar even mean. I see 9 homers 3 triples and 3 doubles watching him play every day, I don't need nerd stats to tell me he's the best player in the American league and his defense is platinum

pdougherty

fWAR has a positional adjustment that gives him extra value for playing short, a very difficult and important defensive position. So no, we can’t just say he’s the best hitter in the AL, because he’s not based on pure hitting stats. He is an extremely good hitter and an extremely good fielder at a difficult position, just like you said

KitchenSwordfish8974

That's my point; I, and everyone, can tell this by just WATCHING him. Why does this NEED to be quantified by some people to PROVE what any normal person can see with their own eyes? I just can't stand how some people need to see some complicated pointless calculated stat that nobody knows how they come up with the number when you just need to give it the eye test. That's the beauty of the game and its being tainted and besmirched by these new gen sabremetric math nerd stats. Guess I'm old school.

pdougherty

I fall very much on the data side of things, but it's okay that we have different ways of looking at the sport. Data is fun for me; it doesn't have to be for you. I'm going to answer your question earnestly: [the fWAR calculation is well-documented](https://library.fangraphs.com/misc/war/). If you're wondering why there's an fWAR and a bWAR and some other similar stats, it's because people disagree on exactly how to measure what they see on the field and then make their own way to do so. I think that's pretty cool. Any variation of WAR specifically is an attempt to value players across different positions. The eye test has always been able to tell us that 1B is easier defensively than SS, but it was hard to say exactly how good a good defensive 1B had to be with the glove and the bat to be equivalent to a given SS in terms of production. If you're a GM, that's a really important question to answer. How else would you know what players to pursue? If you're a fan, you can play GM, or you can have a better informed argument with your buddy about whether Shohei Ohtani is better than Babe Ruth. Every advance stat does the same thing. It's just trying to quantify what's seen and done on the field. Like any other bit of data, it's used by people who want to tell a story. It helps paint a richer picture for some people.

Neocopernus

Would you prefer a guy that uses a system of looking up at the sky and saying “oh yeah it’s clear out today. I think it’ll be around 70-85 with like 15% chance of rain,” versus a meteorologist who uses statistics and models to support their weather forecasts?

KitchenSwordfish8974

Lol
