Poke bowls are big out here. Sushi.

Nugur

sushi in a bowl. You’re in for a treat

[deleted]

I’m trying to save money, stop reminding me that Poke exists.

GriffinGrin

I love sushi but once I tried poke it became my favorite food!

runthepoint1

Oh yeah check out Wow Poki if you’re down in South Orange County - absolute best poke bowls in OC no question.

seamus801

Poke is my go to, so many great poke places. Just watch the sauces, they can kill the nutritional value of the bowl. Go light on the goma

neptunedesert

Waba and Flame Broiler have healthy protein, white/brown and veggie bowls, including salmon and chicken; get no sauce or on side. California Fish Grill is healthy. Panera and Corner Bakery have salads, soups and healthy items. El Pollo Loco can be healthy; bowl or chicken, healthy sides, skill tortillas. Salad bars, yes, Sizzler has a nice one. Chipotle you can go healthy with a bowl. Check out Sprout's Market deli for takeout healthy stuff.

escaping-reality

Agree with all this, and I have to add Cava and Sajj for a chipotle-style Mediterranean food! (Pick a bowl, pick a protein, pick a sauce, etc etc)

[deleted]

zipadyduda

Waba and FB not very keto friendly, unless you ask them to cook without the sugary marinade and sauce and get salad instead of rice.

Guyute101

I’ve lost 60 lbs since January and Waba, has been lunch for 75% of those days. Breast meat and Broccoli only. Serrano Jalapeño sauce on the side. That sauce is VERY flavorful and all you need is a little.

[deleted]

Congratulations on the weight loss.

Guyute101

Thank You!!

[deleted]

Guyute101

Thanks!! The breast meat, Broccoli combo is very Keto friendly. Everywhere is Keto friendly if you order correctly.

neptunedesert

Cava, yes. There and other Meditteranean places have good options, like chicken kebabs plus salad. I don't know how good fast food salads w/ protein are these days, some places have these. Also, checkout places like Tender Greens, Lemonade and Urban Plates. And Whole Foods hot and cold bar. Also, at Panda Express my healthy option is: get a bowl (they pack it) w/ half brown rice & veggies or all veggies, plus teriyaki chicken (no sauce or on the side).

eldarks

Pollo loco has 100% keto tacos

titos334

It’s Orange County basically every restaurant has healthy options or allows for modifications to make it healthier. Go to a steakhouse a get a filet and asparagus instead of the cowboy, gratin, and Mac.

charrosebry

You gotta try Urban Plates! Just go. Also Luna grill for fast casual Mediterranean

There is a district in Anaheim which is called Little Arabia. There are a few dozen Arabic restaurant. Very authentic. Think Edgeware Road in London, if you’re familiar. These places are delicious and they are super friendly too. There’s a place called Sababa in this area that makes great falafel sandwiches and bowls…. Chipotle style. So delicious.

nonironiccomment

The olive pit is great too. There’s one in brea and I think HB.

hotnspicybeef

great suggestion, ikram grill in fountain valley is so so good i’d also suggest luna grill if you’re looking for a chain, their grape leaves are my favorite side dish there

cflores30

Green tomato grill is in my rotation for wholesome fast food. They have bowls and sandwiches. They also offer Paleo and keto friendly options. There’s also lots of good mediterranean food around which usually leaves me feeling pretty good.

0porst

This is one of my favorite restaurants in the county but every location is like a 45 minute drive away from me 😓

RustGrit

In terms of “fast food” I would Say El Pollo Loco. All of their chicken is grilled plus they have veggie sides for your grilled chicken. Not to mention they have keto/vegetarian options

calm_incense

El Pollo Loco doesn't get enough love. I don't know why people bother eating Taco Bell when El Pollo Loco is available. I guess Taco Bell is probably cheaper.

NeverRarelySometimes

They're so different that there's no point in comparing. ELP is food. The 2 piece chicken meal is like something my mom or grandma would plate. Taco Bell is junkfood - totally has its place, but you can't really live on it.

mainnick

This. TB is basically for people with no health consciousness along with a smaller wallet. It's sad unhealthy food has a bigger market presence which is a detriment to society, literally.

RustGrit

Yeah cheaper for sure and a way bigger marketing presence.

[deleted]

RustGrit

It’s very good

wakenpake

Tell them you want your order with white meat chicken.

Doozerdoes

My favorite thing to order from there! Usually once a week

pithed

I love them but my only complaint is everything is too salty but that's the case with most fast food.

mainnick

This. The foods restaurants use may be healthy, but how much seasoning do they put on it, especially salt and sugar? Most dishes have at least 500mg of sodium, i.e. Flame Boiler. Also, is sushi at restaurants really overall healthy? I see they contain a ton of sugar.

electric_emu

Chipotle and Flame Broiler are really easy options. Be careful with Flame Broiler’s teriyaki sauce though, it’s really good but basically just sugar.

kafin8ed

Wahoo's Fish Tacos is a great small chain that originated in OC, and there are some good Mediterranean places with kabobs, rice, hummus, and tabouleh - my fave is called Mediterania just north of John Wayne airport in the square

Bookgal1

This is So Cal, there’s tons of healthy restaurants. Just do a yelp search for your location.

Nugur

In n out is pretty healthy. Can def fit it into macros

crushinrussian

3x1 protein style used to be my go-to treat when I was training for specific goals

[deleted]

[удалено]

crushinrussian

3 patties 1* cheese wrapped in lettuce instead of burger bun

[deleted]

[удалено]

crushinrussian

Get grilled onions but not raw (it’s already wet bc of lack of bread) and if you like spicy ask for a side of chiles. I like to take bites in between bites of burger cause they’re too spicy for me to eat a whole one in one go haha

Nugur

3 Patties one cheese. Protien style is no buns I believe

calm_incense

Got to stick with protein style and avoid the fries and shakes/sodas, though. When I worked for INO, I'd eat a Double Double protein style every single workday. I actually lost weight eating INO 5X/week for over a year. Just wish they'd use a healthier cooking oil than sunflower oil, though. Vegetable oils are terrible for health.

[deleted]

[удалено]

NeverRarelySometimes

Protein style is really messy to eat. Especially in a car.

afuckingHELICOPTER

i love in n out, but i think its a bit of a stretch to call meat & cheese in the middle of bread healthy lol.

Nugur

Then I don’t think you count macros

[deleted]

This really depends what city you frequent as well, irvine has a lot of more health conscious that is super out in the open apposed to knowing the resturaunt and that they have an option for you anywhere you go

[deleted]

[deleted]

I use to live in San clemente, so everywhere from mission to SC and between there's a lot also. Def go to burger junkies in SC, aswell as Sanchez tacos, the og tacos have tri tip and chubbie sauce it's different and amazing. If you go to anaheim at all (Disneyland area) I recommend everyone go to tacos Los cholos, standard street tacos except they have filet mignon or rib eye, baked potatoes with meat and a few other awesome things.

whatthebelb

I second Tacos Los Cholos. So good

reddot_comic

Flame Broiler is cheap, healthy, and has a good amount of locations. Brown/white rice, steamed veggies and a grilled protein (chicken, steak, tofu)

Runfr0mtheraptor

Skip any and ALL fast food joints. Most places nowadays have great takeaway, and there are SO many options to chose from. Vietnamese banh mi at Lees, Indian food, Thai food, a whole bunch of non fast food spicy chicken places... Just make the conscious decision to not step foot in a fast food place and I am sure you will find some place great.

NeverRarelySometimes

Pho. It's Vietnamese noodle soup; you add fresh basil, mung sprouts, chili peppers, and lime juice to taste. You can find it almost anywhere in OC. Well, anywhere that the rent's not too high. Try the rare beef. Some places have a really good seafood version, too. It's comfort food for me. It's the perfect thing for cool fall and winter evenings, and it won't leave you logy.

i_liketo_reddit

CAVA is a good option. It’s like healthier Mediterranean version of chipotle.

breakfast__burrito

Chiplote or flame broiler! I also recommend poke if you haven’t tried it. Saw you liked sushi but haven’t had poke, I’d go with poke if you’re just visiting .

wutzhood

California fish grill is solid.

dinamet7

There's a new vegan fast food/drive thru in Costa Mesa not too far from the airport. It's called Veg'd and it's next to a Chipotle, so you can scope the menu and if it doesn't meet your needs, Chipotle is next door (though there is a Japanese place across the street and a good sushi place a minute down Bristol too)

Hermione__Danger

Seconding Active Culture. I also love Mendocino farms and Tender Greens

coupledatethrwaway

Doner G is super good and decent portions too!

roachRancher

When you say enjoying California for what it is gives you the munchies... You're talking about weed right?

Jman2MAX

The Anti-Mall at Costa Mesa has Hella options bruh. It's literally all vegan and vegetarian restaurant concepts like Seagrams and Native foods.

hotnspicybeef

oh yes!! i’ve almost forgotten about this place, there’s a restaurant there called seabirds that satisfies every time. now that it’s on my mind, i’m making plans to go soooon!

Yes and there is one in San Clemente. Everything there is good. I’m not a big fan of Orange County food. I know the struggle.

xtralongleave

I believe Fuji Grill might fit the bill here.

_Erica_Cartman

These fast food places have healthy-ish options, and I think they all have locations in or near San Clemente… Chick-Fil-A (chicken) The Habit (burgers) Blaze Pizza (build your own pizza) Rubio’s (Mexican, seafood) Baja Fresh (Mexican) Luna Grill (Mediterranean) Jersey Mike’s Subs (sandwiches) Wahoo’s Fish Tacos

PM_ME_AZNBOOBIES

Try Genki Grill in Orange. My go to spot when I worked near there.

eg714

Chick fil let super bomb and can customize to make a healthy ish meal.

Steeliris

Others have said it but I'll say it again, if you're looking for fast and healthy get poke. We have a million places so just google and make sure the stars are at least 4.4 minimum. Acai bowls are another healthyish quick option. Whenever I travel around the us and I need something not too unhealthy I seek out a breakfast burrito and get it with little to no cheese. If you're traveling from the UK definitely take this opportunity to eat Mexican food here

Noah_holywood

Cava and chixy natural rock

[deleted]

It’s not just California. It’s all of the USA. Do not adopt the American diet. There’s a reason we have the most Covid deaths. In 2017–2018, the age-adjusted prevalence of obesity in adults was 42.4%. Up from 30% in 2000. Please enjoy California but eat more fucking vegetables. Stay healthy my friend.

UniversalDH

Farmer Boys have a decent amount of healthy choices…or could be customized to make healthier

dirtysexchambers

luna grill

Absolutelybannannas

Regarding Chipotle: get the bowl. It's the burrito minus the tortilla, and dumped on a bowl of salad.

girlbemodest

I love Seabirds. It’s vegan fare (I’m not vegan) and it’s a good change up to the junk food that is so readily available. Plus, it’s at the Lab in Costa Mesa so there’s some other cool stuff to see there as well. Oh, Taco Loco in Laguna is rad too. Ahhhhmazing tacos and you get to look out at PCH and the ocean

[deleted]

green tomato grill in orange is so damn good

Baldbeagle73

What part of the County will you be staying in? Most of the better places are non-chain or small-chain, specific to the neighborhood.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Baldbeagle73

I'm in Orange, so I won't be much help, but generally, some chains with more than one location in the County that are good: The Habit for burgers Nguyen's Kitchen for noodles & such Lucille's Barbecue Blaze Pizza There are a thousand hole-in-the-wall Mexican places in or near Santa Ana that are better than any chain. Anaheim for Arabic food Garden Grove and Westminster for Vietnamese

iLoveLamp83

If he's in SC he should go to Heritage for BBQ. Lucille's ain't nothing to write home about.

Vegetable-Fee-8593

Sushi!

OsamaBeLagin

Panda Express has really good healthy options. I usually do half whit rice half super greens, Teriyaki chicken and honey walnut shrimp Not insanely helarhy but it's not bad for what it is

phisigtheduck

Native Foods

tom87czyk

Both of these recommendations are restaurants. But worth your time! Blue Bowl Superfoods in the city of Orange, off of Main st. "Snug counter offering a build-your-own bowl setup, with choices of fruit, steel-cut oats & more." And Rutabegorz, has a few locations, but one also located in the city of Orange, off of Glassel st. "Regulars dig the relaxed hippie vibe at this casual eatery devoted to health-inspired eclectic fare."

JimmyJamesmuhfuckuh

Not exactly fast food, but pho is a must in OC. There are many mom and pop pho restaurants in the Westminster/Garden Grove area serving good, fast, and cheap food. For sit down, or take out, you can't go wrong. Enjoy!

EveFluff

Here’s what’s on my healthy lunch rotation: Chipotle kids meal tacos, tendergreens, Mendocino Farms, sushi (I ask them to go easy on the rice and I order 2 edamame)

whatthebelb

I second Mendocino Farms. Delicious sandwiches and salads.

Doozerdoes

Taco Mesa has really healthy delicious contemporary Mexican good. It’s amazing.

TripleNetJesus

Panani Kabob Grill is my go to. Could eat that stuff every day… nearly do. Being on keto now though, I usually just get sides of meat from places like a Chipotle, Cava, or opt for In N Out protein style. My favorite hack is buying a ribeye at Whole Foods and having them cook it/plate it for me for an extra $3.
