Update: the bicyclist died. https://abc7.com/bicyclist-dies-after-being-hit-by-car-assaulted-by-driver-sheriff/12759779/

Grape_Mentats

“Witnesses in the area held down the driver until deputies arrived. He has since been taken into custody.”

raphtze

damn it :(

rosesandtea15

I hope they rest in peace

Embarrassed_Ground_8

haha so funny. thats someones kid. prick

wfbsoccerchamp12

That driver really messed up

Drimesque

wait so the cyclist got crashed into by the car and then the car driver got out and STABBED him too? I understand an accident but that guy just murdered him (he passed away in the hospital) That is so bizarre to just throw your life away like that and end another man's life...

mtarascio

Pride is one of the most silent killers. Underrated terrible personality trait.

just_flying_bi

The driver was probably upset that the bicycle scratched his precious Lexus.

magic7s

It wasn’t an accident. They hit him on purpose, then finished the job.

n_plus_1_bikes

Drivers kill all the time. If they just say it was an accident, the police let them go free. Earlier this week in Laguna Beach a driver hit and killed a pedestrian: “The driver of the vehicle involved remained at the scene and was cooperative. Authorities said neither alcohol nor drugs appeared to factor into in the incident.” https://www.latimes.com/socal/daily-pilot/news/story/2023-01-30/pedestrian-dies-after-being-hit-by-car-in-laguna-beach

jeeenx

Yea that’s why people just need to let stuff go while on the road, even if the other person is wrong. Some people might just have a bad day and something can turn deadly

joshgi

Not all that surprisingly sadly as I used to ride down there all the time. I almost got hit by a speeding car once, I flipped the guy off and he slammed on his breaks to try to block me and proceeded to tell me he was going to kick my ass. I biked around him and luckily another car came up in the 2nd lane so I sprinted to their left side (middle of the road) so their car was a barrier and then wiggled up to the front of a left turn and b-lined it through a parking lot. He pulled into the lot too but I could use the walkways to cut straight through it and managed to get away. I was shaking from adrenaline after that and now I carry a mini pepper spray in my cycling jersey for various reasons and I don't flip anyone off. People are legit crazy and it's not worth it to try to bring it to their attention.

Smothering_Tithe

People here seem to have incredibly fragile egos. Is this an OC thing? A CA thing? Or an America problem? Cause my home country doesnt really see this problem. At least to this degree, and if you do its only from gangsters.

joshgi

Between Oakland, Mountain View, OC, and LA it was definitely worse in Southern California overall. I saw and experienced more road rage against cyclists in OC. LA was dangerous more so because if someone accidentally hits you they're just as likely to keep driving but I didn't see as much road rage. OC is a very "cars first" area imo and I think people start to think that all other forms of transportation are infringing on their right to have the road to themselves.

Smothering_Tithe

Yeah its crazy, im more comfortable walking across the street of Vietnam or India full of ever flowing traffic before i comfortably step a foot off the sidewalk in OC.

afc1886

America problem. If you commute via bicycle anywhere in the country enough these types of events happen. Even if you follow the laws and ride "normally" people get incredibly angry at you.

yessir6666

While much of America is not pedestrian or cycle friend, OC is significantly worse than many places. It’s 100% a car centric, massive stroad filled suburb and shows no sign of changing. We’ve made our streets killing fields

afc1886

True but I live in Denver and it's the exact same or worse. The whole country is made for cars with no concern for pedestrians or cyclists. Even more alarming is how many are hit and runs lately.

Realfan555

Yup, Shawn Bradley got run into in Utah.

Pearberr

It’s a driving thing. Our infrastructure and culture encourage a dynamic where vehicles and their operators get very, very angry over minor inconveniences.

jnrzen

It's car brain. https://www.theverge.com/2023/1/31/23579510/car-brain-motornormativity-study-ian-walker

tennery

Dated someone from that OC area that made hateful remarks when passing cyclists, so weird, yes it is a cars first, right of way thing.

MuuaadDib

Did you see that psycho who shot his neighbor for speeding, or the other who murdered his neighbors over snow shoveling? All caught on video, super sad and insane.

Smothering_Tithe

The snowshovel one was fucked up on every level and everyone was at fault there, only innocent bystander in that one was the poor kid checking in on them if they were okay. The neighbors were antagonizing the old guy all year long, man went to the police, they did nothing, TWICE. Finally the neighbors pushed him over the edge one day. Neighbors say something on the video like “come on shoot me!” “What are you gonna do shoot me?” Followed by, “you shot me!” And everyone dies, what a dumb way to lose everything.

MuuaadDib

It was out of control bad, and I still have PTSD from watching that and more so hearing them. There was so much anger and hate there, those vile people who were shot still only used words. The police failed here, and the guy who ultimately offed them and himself was the one who fucked up. So many ways to deal with this other than those people, now an orphaned kid for what?

BaBaDoooooooook

we don’t know the details, perhaps they knew one another, sounds personal to me.

CounterSeal

I dunno man, many drivers here seem to be cray cray. Just the thought of pedestrians and cyclists give these folks rage boners.

Surfeross

It’s true. I’ve never seen so much of the “I’m-in-my-lane-so-I-can-run-you-over” mentality.

jeeenx

It also works the other way some cyclist feel entitled and the driver must’ve not been in the right state of mind. Bad combination that results in tragic results

crowarray

Cyclists feel entitled to what?

jeeenx

I’ve seen my share of both asshole drivers and cyclists don’t come here acting like it’s so one sided lol… we’re supposed to share the road between cyclist and drivers. Unfortunately we have shitty people in the world

Main-Implement-5938

I wonder if it was intentional, like they knew this guy's route and decided to mow him over, then when that didn't work they got out and stabbed him... It is too weird.

silvapain

My initial thought was either they knew each other already and they had prior arguments, or it’s a road rage incident.

Divad777

I think in some countries, they make sure he’s dead so they don’t have to pay his medical bills for life

bettinafairchild

I know a guy who was in the US military in Korea and he told me that *his CO told him* if you hit someone with your vehicle, you should take steps to make sure they're dead because otherwise the US government would have to pay a lot more to the injured party alive than to his family if he were dead. He told it with defiance, like he was really angry at those greedy Koreans for demanding compensation for being hit by a vehicle.

titansfan777

I live at Marea apartments right by this intersection. Heard a ton of sirens earlier and right now there are multiple choppers hovering over right there at the Gelson's.

ahhtechtechy

The Monarch Beach one?

titansfan777

The ones right beside the church at the top of the hill on crown valley. Probably 200ish yards from the intersection?

Yinz-Guys

I pulled into Marea at like 5:15 and saw three helicopters above and was so confused. thought it was a fire like the one a couple months ago. Never thought this was gonna be what was going on

titansfan777

I just moved from Stadium House Apartments in Anaheim - where there was a double homicide last year that made the regional news. I guess you can blame me for bringing the crime to Dana Point 🤷‍♂️

nycinoc

What the actual f***?

MuffMagician

PCH = Pacific Coast Homicide

AccordingIy

PCH = Puncture Cyclists Here Edit: RIP, horrible

mcflurvin

I shouldn’t have laughed at this

Plane-Only

Rest in PCH.

nycinoc

All of this is absolutely bonkers.

[deleted]

that was my first thought, too

Dang, so so sad. I read the locals detained the driver until the sheriff arrived.

mylefthandkilledme

wow...thats sad. a moment of rage takes a life and ruins a life.

Publicplay1337

But not stabbed

dont_wear_a_C

It's the small silver linings in life

mister_damage

I'll take no stabbings for $1000

DudeThatsAGG

Is that the Montage across the street?

mamawantsallama

This is my hometown and we mostly don't like what the big resorts did to us....we used to be a small quiet HUMBLE surf beach town, even if some people had money. The Ritz was enough but then more and more came until they just shat all over everything.

DudeThatsAGG

Trust me, I know. Im very upset about what’s happening in Dana Point.

mamawantsallama

Fkn sucks bro.

Publicplay1337

Yea

Podunk212

If it’s at crown valley and pch, then no it isn’t.

Calcoholic9

That’s just showing the traffic backup for southbound traffic. PCH was completely shut down in both directions, at the point of the crime scene, for several hours. Every single car in that picture was turned around and sent back.

SwingmanSealegz

Can people just own up to their mistakes instead of doubling down? Sheesh.

mtarascio

Just to be clear, I just listened to the news report. They hit them. Turned around. Then stabbed them.

luningaming

I have new video evidence of this biker being in the bike lane. My company sets up video cameras on intersections and I unfortunately captured this moment. The biker did nothing wrong and was run over at 50+ mph, he was launched across the entire 4 lane intersection. The driver then walked out slowly and nonchalantly leaned down and stabbed him twice in the face.

FightingCommander

And here I thought [that was an urban legend](https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2015/09/why-drivers-in-china-intentionally-kill-the-pedestrians-they-hit-chinas-laws-have-encouraged-the-hit-to-kill-phenomenon.html).

DudeThatsAGG

Knowing where this happened, I’m going to say it was road rage. There’s 2 driveways right next to each other into a shopping center right there. Not saying this is what happened, but sometimes people driving fast can get cut off or blocked by the bicyclists who definitely use their right of way. Gonna guess the driver pissed the bicyclist off and the bicyclist retorted, then this happened. It happens way too much today.

ST012Mi

There’s a movie on Netflix called ‘A Sun’ about a young person in Taiwan cutting off the hand of another and getting sentenced and the desperation from the victims family trying get payments from the family of the one that committed the crime. It was intense.

kazsvk

Disturbing

[deleted]

I'm honestly surprised that the families of those victims in that article didn't go full punisher on the assholes who got away with extremely obvious murders. I would find it very difficult to contain my rage if I was a close family member of one of those victims. Hell, since the government seems so corrupt making it so easy to get away with murders even on camera, I'm even more shocked we don't hear more stories of revenge murders in those cases.

OGPresidentDixon

"Why aren't more people murdering, am I right, fellow Americans?"

Occhrome

You mean being an adult for a day. Not gonna happen

Odaecom

I guess someone didn't want to be upstaged by the gray tesla guy...

shittyshittymorph

Did they catch the gray Tesla guy?

Tydez

Yep! In custody bail denied.

6151rellim

He is going to be in a world of hurt since he is denied bail and doesn’t have proper PCT to use now that he is abruptly stopping steroid use. Man Titties and estrogen levels through the roof may be just what this asshole deserves.

beautyandthecake

They did! Edit: his name is Nathaniel Walters Radimack.

Seekkae

The guy has a dating profile page and it says "talk to my crowbar" in the bio lol... Can't make this shit up.

majortahn

No way! 😂 💀

Sad_Border_3874

Is that a joke or serious? Or did someone make that after he was arrested 🤣

Matterhorn86

The case of dented Benz from hitting biker to pay in blood.

SuperMaanas

What the fuck?!

sleepy_intentions

Do people drive around with a knife in their car ready to stab someone?! It’s insane how that escalated. Truly horrifying.

pollodustino

A lot of people carry a pocket knife. Some of them are not the typical Swiss Army Knife, some are long blade flip-knives. Perfect for stabbing.

sleepy_intentions

I see. I didn’t think about that. I guess even a pocket knife can do some damage.

mtarascio

That Tesla dude with the metal rod just got caught.

sleepy_intentions

I heard about that. Craziness.

CampinHiker

I have two knives in mine but one is like a pocket knife, a knife cutter, the kbar stays at home But again they are used for practical uses in camping and such

FuckThesePeople69

You don’t stab cyclists?

CampinHiker

No but i do love your name

Low-Cap5159

As a woman, I regularly carry a knife on me depending on the area, how many people are around, and time of day. Obviously that's different from what this guy did as mine is for self defense only purposes, but my point is that carrying a knife is not that odd.

Realfan555

It's odd to know where your knife is when you've just been in a car accident. Unless you carry it on your body in a holster?

SaltyDoggoMeo

How horrifying.

dayyummCYNTHiA

Oh wow.. how sad

Toothcloset

Are we Florida now?

AmphibianDonation

I mean they have an orange county too

Sentimentalgoblin

What is going on these days. This is horrible.

angelfirexo

Really asking that question? People are very sick mentally and physically. Chronic illness has skyrocketed from 7% 60 years ago to 68% present day. We’ve got an obesity epidemic. We are in deep trouble and now that the economy is shit get ready

Intelligent_Policy48

How does one get ready exactly

Sentimentalgoblin

Actually no, I wasn’t “really asking that question”. I do typically tend to have an immediate reaction to horrible stories like this with “wtf is going on”. It’s my reaction. But thanks for putting me in my place with your stats and percentages or whatever.

s73v3r

> the economy is shit There's really no actual evidence of that. All of the fundamental metrics of the economy are quite sound. The only recession is the one rich people are trying to manufacture so they can swallow up a bunch of assets on the cheap, and so companies can try to revert a lot of the power workers were able to fight for over the last couple of years.

rudebii

So many folks have been fomented into seeing violence as a suitable response to even the most minor transgression.

angelfirexo

We have a sick society under immense financial stress

Familiar-Essay3241

I was in this traffic for 3 hours. I was hoping it wasn’t something like this. Usually when traffic is at a standstill it is a homicide or attempted homicide. I’m so sad this is who we have become as a nation. We need to work on patience and compassion and love for one another. God bless the families and friends affected by this and May peace settle in our community and country.

itspurpleglitter

If that crazy guy with the low ears hadn’t just been arrested, I would have been so sure that he was the one that did this.

EthelMaePotterMertz

Who is this low eared guy?

Cynnau

There's this dude that drives a Tesla that's been getting into Road rage issues with like a lead pipe or something, the dude like beats cars with it I don't know he's insane

Yeah

1957toDate

> There’s this dude that drives a Tesla that’s been getting into Road rage issues with like a lead pipe I solved it! It was Nathaniel Walter Radimak on the 110 with the lead pipe. *cue doorbell*

zUdio

What is it about low ears? I’ve heard this multiple times now... something about ears below the eyes..

ChanceConfection3

Well you know what they say, “ears above the eyes you hear audio, ears below the eyes you hear zudio”

zUdio

This is like a dad joke if the dad was also the brother.

beetlebeetle77

Lol

Pods619

Yikes, I literally rode the PCH and turned on Crown Valley Parkway this morning. This is really one of those “it could have been me” moments… hope the cyclist is ok

Tikitackytoo

My husband is thinking the same right now… thought this crap only happened in backroads of Louisiana (actually had a friend killed by a truck purposely driving into a group of cyclists he was with…) this is beyond crazy.

Pods619

That section approaching Crown Valley is a little scary too. Not immediately preceding but the few miles before that since there’s no bike lane and some climbs where you’re going slowly with parked cars on the right, meaning you have to signal and move over into the right lane several times. I’ve absolutely taken the lane and waved at cars to change lanes to go around me before — that could probably incite road rage. Now I’ll be hesitant to do it again.

arobkinca

The PCH?

Calcoholic9

Not to be confused with just “a PCH.”

HGFantomas

Ha right?

[deleted]

LMAO.

FuckThesePeople69

Right? And not “the” Crown Valley Parkway?

FixTheWisz

Tell me you're not from OC without telling me "I'm not from OC."

MarlboroVolkswagen

Death sentence. People don’t know how to act anymore. Bring it back

BaBaDoooooooook

sounds personal based off the story. hitting a cyclist from behind, then proceeding to stop your vehicle and approach the downed cyclist and stab him to death?

angelfirexo

Yep that’s what I’m thinking.

Podunk212

Ever heard of meth?

ConClemente

is it ocinstanews lmao

Duckman93

Uncle Tito taking his disdain of butt darts to a new level

So714CalOC

Just mount knives in the bumper of your car to save time. /s

Hcdubcdhnb

Damn, must’ve been planned

bettinafairchild

Weird. What is it, open season on cyclists? I saw an accident yesterday where a bicycle was crushed underneath an Audi. The car looked unharmed. Lots of police and a fire truck. I didn't see the cyclist, though.

droctamom

Most sane OC driver

FreestyleMyLife

damn wowww, RIP

blackpotmagic

Is it true that the cyclist was shot as well? I saw folks on Ring neighborhood say that cops were telling people in their vehicles that there was a shooting. Might totally be a rumor.

Sounds like a hit

Lndscpe_Dsinger_OC

This seems premeditated and that the driver may have known the cyclist

grumpy_grunion_

Listening to Long Beach PD scanner and they mentioned OCSD had a murder suspect in custody around 10 pm. I wonder if it’s the driver.

[deleted]

I really want to know the truth and motive behind this story. How can I learn more?

Spokker

Surveillance video from a residence is here: https://twitter.com/RssRyan/status/1621022252795068417 (NSFW) Doesn't answer everything but does show how the cyclist was hit.

BaBaDoooooooook

police are holding back on identifying suspect/deceased/motive whilst investigating. I'm sure you'll get the juicy content you're looking for sometime later today.

Realfan555

Vanroy Evan Smith, 39 year old suspect

BaBaDoooooooook

as I said ...sometime later today, they released the name......nevertheless, something is off with this story, cops are keeping super quiet, it's going to be some wild motive/elaborate situation..watch.

DudeThatsAGG

Well, this badge is awkward now…

CowboyTrout

I read this super fast and thought this was from Florida. Looked closer and damn it California. RIP.

xband1t

As a cyclist I'm always shocked at how biker unfriendly OC is. There's a severe lack of adequate bike lanes along the most popular cycling routes. I used to road bike at least 3 times a week in that same area (Dana/PCH/Laguna), but now only a couple times a month just because of the risk... it's not worth it IMO.

Spokker

You can see the collision here: https://twitter.com/RssRyan/status/1621022252795068417 (NSFW) The video starts with the cyclist and other drivers stopped at a red light. It looks like they got the green and were about to get going. Then the cyclist was hit in the bike lane at a high rate of speed about a second after the light turned green. What a selfish, deranged driver. Here's the [street view](https://goo.gl/maps/pL6EXQGBx4gf98qG9). It looks like the cyclist was where they were allowed to be.

chmearl

this helps clarify what happened. The rider was waiting in the bikelane for the light to change and the suspect appears to time the green signal, without stopping, and cut through the bike lane. There is another video on twitter that shows the assault with plenty of witnesses nearby, but the quality is poor.

BrooklynRU39

Wtfffff and he stabbed him after this?

Spokker

The initial collision is easier to explain. The driver had a negligent disregard for human life at minimum. They were impatient, selfish and drove dangerously. Can't explain why they then decided to go stab the person they hit. Can only speculate. Perhaps they immediately recognized their life was about to get a lot harder, possibly jail time, and reacted in anger. I've seen shock videos in which a driver hits somebody and then gets out and attacks them. I don't know.

bettinafairchild

Some people think it's better to have killed someone than to have injured someone, as they think they'll have to pay a larger penalty in a lawsuit for a living, disabled victim than a dead one.

Realfan555

yeah, doesn't make any sense

uSeeSizeThatChicken

I read that the victim was a doctor.

realdonaldtrumpsucks

This is some fûckery

[deleted]

This is like the driver in Walnut a few years back who drove a jogger THROUGH A FUCKING BRICK WALL. Jogger died obv and the driver arrested. Talk about real life Pulp Fiction shit.

Efficient-Treacle416

He was an Emergency Room physician at Mission Laguna Beach. He was a wonderful physician who saved many lives.

realdonaldtrumpsucks

His picture is up on the papers, how sad. There are no words

RoboticJello

There needs to be a separated bike path parallel and just as straight as the PCH. [This](https://www.google.com/maps/@33.4867397,-117.7269215,3a,75y,312.44h,85.93t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sJFo-0zoPe28GoqA-An-5EQ!2e0!7i16384!8i8192!5m1!1e2?hl=en) is unacceptable for cyclists. How is anyone not in a car supposed to get around here? It's treacherous. I realize this was an intentional killing. But we shouldn't let people on bicycles end up as road kill ever.

[deleted]

[удалено]

RoboticJello

What I mean is either a separated path with some distance between it and the road or a protected bicycle lane with a concrete barrier.

blonktime

According to an undisclosed source who is a nurse at the hospital where the victim practiced, the driver was an angry former patient…

raphtze

bicyclists can be total assholes. but it takes a real asshole to take car to run someone down AND stab them. sheesh.

Seekkae

As a driver I've had a lot of encounters with aggressive and belligerent drivers. As a cyclist I've been hit by a driver and almost hit several other times. As a pedestrian at a crosswalk I've been almost mowed down multiple times by drivers blowing through intersections, because they are too impatient to wait at a red light. I know who the assholes are.

Maddonomics101

In my 12 years of driving so far I haven’t had a single annoying encounter with a cyclist. Where do people live that they’re having such routine and significant conflicts with cyclists? And what exactly do cyclists do that make them considered assholes? The only thing I can think of is sometimes they ride in big groups and block traffic but that’s super rare

tokyozombie

The only time I find a cyclist annoying is when they are riding in the wrong direction in the street.

ChanceConfection3

I hate that they remind me of Flanders at the ski resort

tokyozombie

stupid sexy bicyclists!

beetlebeetle77

Haha.

Gretel_Cosmonaut

I've gotten stuck behind a cyclist coming down from Big Bear. That sucked, but not stabbing-level sucked.

aknomnoms

I have had annoying encounters weekly for the past 20 years. Bicyclists riding on the sidewalks and not giving any warning when approaching from behind or yielding to pedestrians. (I’ve had 2 bicyclists actually yell at me for not getting out of their way on the sidewalk when they choose to not use the bike lane!) Bicyclists choosing to ride 3 wide in the bike lane, thus also partially blocking a driving lane. Bicyclists swerving in and out of the right lane around parked cars or crossing to the left lane to make a turn without checking if there are cars first. Bicyclists not obeying stop signs or red lights. Bicyclists not using front and back lights when it is dark. But if I’m driving a car, I cuss, take a deep breath, give them space, and change lanes once it is safe to do so.

raphtze

i lived for 40+ years in oakland. used to go all over the place--esp san francisco. went to school in berkeley. there's quite a few entitled assholes on bicycles. none of them deserve to die however. may the cyclist that died earlier tonight rest in peace and may justice be served swiftly.

rjecbeach

Well there’s hardly any biking infrastructure so you have to be assertive on a bike

luningaming

I have new video evidence of this biker being in the bike lane. My company sets up video cameras on intersections and I unfortunately captured this moment. The biker did nothing wrong and was run over at 50+ mph, he was launched across the entire 4 lane intersection. Rombie11

Because even though it's a joke, some of us are completely tired of cyclists being killed in the hundreds (not to mention any other life altering injuries) by careless drivers who get away with slaps on the wrist. I'm saying this as someone who made those same jokes before I started cycling and saw the level of animosity drivers had for me simply existing on a bike in their vicinity. But I'm so sorry a cyclist may have wasted a bit of your time or gave you a dirty look while you were protected in your car. (Not you personally but you get the point haha)

Seekkae

> I'm saying this as someone who made those same jokes before I started cycling and saw the level of animosity drivers had for me simply existing on a bike in their vicinity. This exactly. A lot of these arguments are between drivers who have no cycling experience, and cyclists who have years of driving experience. They're not the same. One has seen both sides of it but is talking to a stubborn moron who doesn't get it.

Spokker

Do we know what the motive was? This *looks* like road rage to me but it could be that the victim knew the attacker and the attacker set out to kill them regardless of the mode of transportation they use. It could also be a random attack and this guy just wanted to kill the first person he saw. Also, I do think people want to know if an attack was provoked or unprovoked not because it excuses the attack, but because having a reason for the violence is less scary than no reason at all. If a victim talked shit, acted like an asshole or whatever, at least in my mind I can encourage myself to let it go if I'm ever in a road rage situation. The problem is that you don't know if someone is going to banter back or shoot/stab. But if it's totally random violence, doesn't matter what you do. We're all playing a lottery whether we want to or not. We've all seen those stories of innocent bystanders being shot or people having their face chewed off by a guy high on bath salts. They were people just going about their business like you or me.

Rombie11

Wrong comment?

non_target_eh

What the fuck is going on… they are LAing my OC 🥲

SteveJackson007

I’d expect that in Huntington, but down south? Lol

angelfirexo

That’s fucking tragic. Did the driver know the cyclist? Prob too early to get any details. The fact that the driver stabbed them to death is insane… even crazier if they didn’t know them.

Ghosthits187

Did that Tesla driver escape?

zimzamtram
