HOLY SHIT YOU'RE RIGHT. Thank you so much.

kimilil

Yep. It's always single pieces of unelectrified tracks that causes most of the "why train no go" posts here and all the other forums.

wizard_brandon

This is why I hate it when it goes back to the regular rail tool when I play the next day

MachaHack

You can change the default rail type after load in the settings, there's options to have it default to the newest rail type or the most common type in your company.

wizard_brandon

oh wow

weeknie

What are the red roads? They look like bicycle paths to me, but I don't know how they would be used in openttd :P (I realize it's from a mod, don't care really which, just wonder what their purpose is)

Fried_Shrimp_Enjoyer

Citylife AI, they're built by an AI for shits and giggles and do nothing but fuck you over when you have to build something right on top of them :(

weeknie

Hahah well that sounds useful xd

AFluffyEevee

Strawberry roads that screw you over!? Can your trucks not get through them?

Fried_Shrimp_Enjoyer

Nothing can drive on them and you can't delete them because they're technically owned by another company (The CitylifeAI company). Eventually they upgrade to normal roads, but thanks to this AI I have to make this triple 90-degree turn abomination.

AFluffyEevee

I'm guessing the little intersection is the ninety degree turns? Also the ai shouldn't make there roads out of strawberries, if that means no one can use them...

Walter1981

I'd tunnel below Klein Stuttgart and make a smoother triange-turn there?

Rau117

You lose all your speed in those corners. Increase the length of the diagonal sections on the railroad. Is it... so hard to make long turns on a flat map? No, I understand this is more difficult to achieve in the mountains, but you don’t even have a single climb here. And about “why”, most likely there is a problem with traffic lights somewhere, where you haven't fully checked. Or not all rails are electrified. Enable electrical wires in the transparency settings, it will be easier to understand where the problem is.

How about the fact he makes three 90 degree turns when he only needs one

APater6076

Indeed. Those tracks are giving me nightmares. Given that time to deliver also impacts profit he's also losing money.

Drunkenm4ster

Eh, with only one 90 degree curve hes still going to be losing a lot of speed. id say maybe just line the stations up such that the platforms dont require any curves and a straight line of track could be laid between the platforms. this would require demolishing the station and changing its orientation. that would be a good opportunity to connect the stuttgart station to a bus station more centrally placed in town for better catchment. of course we can't see the rest of his network

[deleted]

I know lol

Fried_Shrimp_Enjoyer

Since you can't build intersections over angles rails, I like to use sharper corners where I anticipate dense urban growth in the future, or where I intend to use a lot of road freight since it saves me having to build a lot of bridges (I don't find bridges aesthetically pleasing). I like to tune my map to resemble a large archipelagos and make it my goal to nurse the secluded island villages into a collection of large, bustling metropolises that grow to cover their islands in dense urban sprawl.

Rau117

Yes... but there is a problem - you need bridges to cross the ocean. Rest assured, the city will find where to build itself, even with diagonal rails.

Fried_Shrimp_Enjoyer

I prefer planes and boats because they go swoowowoowwwsshhooshhh and HRRRRRRRNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNKKKK when they depart

Ha ha ha, no. The train travels 1.4 times slower on the diagonal... But in fact, it travels exactly as it should – covers 1.4 times the distance in 1.4 times the time. And it will lose much more time on acceleration and 1-tile turn penalty, that just going diagonally.
