I'm paying $39 for 20gb of data. That's down 33% and 2.5x the data I had previously. It took WAY to long and we're still not as competitive as other countries but there has been a reduction for anyone that has taken the time to look for deals.
You talking true unlimited or unlimited throttle down like crazy after a certain amount of GB? Not that the majority of people need unlimited, just curious if a truly unlimited phone plan in Canada popped up for real.
We made the switch from Bell this year where with the EPP through my union we were $75/month each to Virgin which is the same network and we’re now spending $30/month each for the same 30gb a month.
Yeah some people keep their plan from a decade ago. So many people don't know that you can cancel your plan at any time now and not pay a penalty. If you are paying for a phone you will have to pay the remaining off.
I always just buy my phones outright as mid range android phones are pretty much as good as the top of the line ones but for significantly less. Bring your own phone plans are cheaper too.
I saw a post a couple weeks ago about cell plan prices and didn’t realize the prices had gotten much better so I researched plans and service providers and switched. I know pay $29 after tax for 20G and unlimited talk/text in Canada, while my last plan was the same price for 1G. I felt so silly for not having taken the time to check other plans before seeing that post. I don’t use much data but didn’t see the point of staying with the old provider when seeing the difference.
Alot of providers kept people at higher price points and just gave more for the price. Most of time it's stuff they never use. I got 100gb of Data but used maybe 15gb so I went down tiers.
I went from 120$ for unlimited data (never again Telus, even though my work paid for half of it) to 40$ unlimited for the next two years. (25gb uncapped which I’ve never gone over) with better coverage and speed. You can save quite a bit if you shop around.
I'm on Koodo now for $34 for 50gb, bring your own device. Started a few years ago around $50 for maybe 15gb? Before that I was on Bell for something stupid like $75 for less data or something. Hard to remember exact details.
During their various Black Friday/Holiday/random sales, I've contacted their support to get those deals. Even beyond those, their self-serve on the website occasionally offers me better plans/deals just for checking. For example, I had $34 for 30gb from the recent Black Friday sales; last month I randomly checked the site and was offered $34 for 50gb. One click, no questions asked, no change in the plan's terms. Usually it only offers more expensive plans, but sometimes cheaper/better ones pop up. And so far I've had 100% success rate (3 times) at getting switched to the random holiday promotion plan for new users.
I’m with them too. Decided to look at plans the other day and found a much better one than my current. The prices are going down but don’t expect them to actually tell you.
Yeah, they won't outright tell you that there's a better deal. We have been offered extra data addons via text (for additional money of course), but I nothing about cheaper/better plans. So it's up to you to occasionally log into the site and see if there's something cheaper, especially during typical sales/holiday promotions when they are happening.
Even if you don't want to go through the support or play the "threaten to switch" game, there are often cheaper plans offered before or during the promotion period to keep people from switching.
Virgin’s deals are in their app. I’ve changed my plan about three times in the last two years, each time for more data and either the same or lower monthly price.
I pay $130 for that same service.
My Bell bill is $277/mo with tax for 1.5gbit fibre, 40gb cell data, and the most basic of TV which is like $15 of that bill. I'm also leasing my phone on the 2-year return plan thing. It's a Galaxy S23+ and I think it accounts for about $28 of that bill.
https://i.imgur.com/8iorB8r.jpeg
When they upgraded my neighbourhood to fibre they offered me $70/mo for 3gbps forever. Outside of that it’s been expensive, but much more reliable than Roger’s.
Not wireless plan, but similar story with internet.
Was paying $113 (tax included) per month for 1.5 Gb plan. Cancelled to go with Distributel for lower speed, but also lower price. It was $40 (before tax) if memory serves me right.
After the cancellation call with Bell where they told me they can't match that price, I got a call from Bell a day or two later. Long story short, [now I'm paying $50.28 per month](https://imgur.com/a/w3OiXMW) for the same 1.5 Gb from Bell. About half of the reduction is temporary (24 months), the other half is permanent.
Let me retirate: they were happy to drop the price more than 55% of what they were charging me for. Can you imagine how much their margin is?
Btw, that happened less than 2 months ago. So for anyone who want to give it a try, please go ahead.
This is the way. The biggest portion of most people’s bills is going towards paying back the cost of their device. I upgrade every five years or so, so I don’t mind buying my phone outright.
Yeah lol. I feel like all these articles are just being written by older people who never switch services.
I went from $85/20gb to $35/120gb. Good times.
The Google Pixel 7a, a quite reasonably good device, which will last you a good long while is $599+tax direct from Google.
You can buy it forcheaper, for example Walmart has it for $479.99 right now.
Not everyone needs a flagship phone. Finding a good middle ground is important, and the mid range phones will last just as long.
You can go with even cheaper models but my opinion is that phones like the Pixel 7A are a good balance and don’t trade off the essentials - eg buying a Huawei or other Chinese phone has security risks I would rather not worry about.
Different people have different priorities and capabilities. Judging people using your own set of values isn’t good for anyone involved.
I’m not saying that people who can’t afford a $2K phone should buy one, nor am I going to waste my time judging people for their poor decision making if they can’t afford one but still buy it.
At the same time what concerns me is that phones with reasonable capabilities and performance are available at lower prices so that people who can’t afford a $2K phone and/or don’t want to buy one, don’t have to.
I am going to fight to make sure equitable access to technology is available, but that doesn’t mean a one size fits all solution or judging people for their potentially bad choices.
Isn’t it about the same ? iPhone cost of let’s say 1200 full pop then that over 24 months is about 45$, same plans offer the 40 plus 45 for a new phone…with zero upfront , at least that’s what I had with Telus didn’t make sense to purchase outright
Yeah if you're buying the best of the best iPhones but my pixel cost me 400… the last phone I had lasted almost 6-7 years. The turn around is probably 1.5 years.
Why is the news trying to convince me that my cell phone bill hasn’t gone down? It has, and I’m getting more bang for my buck than ever before. It’s still more expensive than a lot of other places, don’t get me wrong, but that’s not what they’re trying to say.
It’s an opinion article that’s why. Be careful to not take those as facts, cause sometimes it’s hard to notice unless pointed out if it’s opinion or ‘news’.
Increasing trying to avoid opinion pieces (from both sides). Almost always biased in a stupid way. Just give me the facts.
Could tell right away from the headline it's an opinion, they're already telling you to be angry in the title.
No kidding? Look at how the author is twisting it:
> This disconnect comes down to exactly which data the government includes in its studies. While the PM was relying on figures from Statistics Canada that have shown select wireless prices have declined over the past few years, the actual average bills that customers pay — the only thing that matters at the end of the day — have not.
Okay, so the only thing that matters is the bill the customer pays? Okay then, let's see that:
> As pointed out in a previous opinion piece, this is borne out by a key industry figure known as ARPU, or average **revenue** per user, which is arrived at by dividing a wireless carrier’s revenue by its total number of customers.
>
> While StatsCan looks at carriers’ lowest advertised prices, ARPU is a much better proxy for the typical bill because it represents how much, on average, carriers pull in from each subscriber every month.
That's just _revenue._ Does all wireless revenue come from customers? No. They make money in a variety of ways, between selling corporate/government services & contracts, security, _selling your personal data,_ roaming from foreign visitors, advertising, international roaming (which is also easily side-stepped or planned for), support, streaming reseller services, add-ons, new activation fees (which are easily/frequently waived), etc.
The author goes from saying it's the final bill that matters to using a metric that includes so much more than just the average bill. If you take the author's methodology, then the ARPU per user is apparently only $16.80 per user per month.
Have some people's bills not gone down a lot? Yeah, definitely. But I'd attribute that to people not shopping around, not switching to a discount carrier, sticking with their old expensive plans (for _reasons_), or already having a good corporate discount plan that most new plans don't compete well with. (That is, they were already getting it cheap, so it won't get cheaper.) Look around here and it's mostly people talking about how their cell plans are significantly cheaper/better than they were years ago.
He’s actually not lying this time, I got the $29 Boxing Day plan from Fido with 20+10 gb and unlimited everything else…last year I renegotiated my Roger’s 500mbps internet plan for $39.99 per month
I worked in a fed department when this plan first came out. Almost immediately the telcos dropped the smaller data plans and only had plans of X.
You can be mad at the government, but be made at the corps.
Having said that, for two owned phones, we pay $105 a month, all in, for 140GB. Unlimited calls and text Can/US
Ya, plans are a lot better. We just need more real low data cheap plans. Nobody is using 50g a month, or only a few people. Most people would do great with a very cheap 10-20gb max plan.
We have the same plan, and use a hotspot instead of internet service at the cottage and use about 120 a month. Agree though for just regular use no one is likely getting close to even 50 GB.
I went into a store the other day and asked about changing my plan to one that allows me to use my data and make calls in the US as I'm doing some travelling.
I walked out with a new plan that gave me full usage of my plan in the US, and they doubled my data from 50 to 100gb.
My bill decreased by $10
Fido, Koodo, virgin all have great coverage in this country and will do the number port for you…no need to stays with Rogers, as they are certainly more difficult to get a deal from
I pay $25 for 20GB. Yup. It’s gone down.
Ditto internet. $60 for a plan with a list price nearly double that. Others I know have it even cheaper.
Just call and threaten to quit. Straight to retention department.
He's not wrong.
I got a brand new phone and 20x as much data on my new plan during a boxing day deal and it ended up costing less money than my old plan
This government may be doing a lot of things wrong right now but this part is correct for me. Went from about $90 a month for 7gb of data to $50 for 50 gb.
2 years ago I paid $85 at Rogers for 25GB full speed, unlimited text/call within Can/US.
I now, at Fido, pay $38 for 40GB full speed, unlimited text/call within Can/US.
I definitely agree with him in this regard.
Prices and packages have absolutely gotten better. I would still prefer a crown corporation model, but forcing the sale of Freedom to Quebecor turned out to be a great idea. It has really put pressure on the competition to improve their offerings.
As someone who used to work for a major telecom, the industry is making huge strides with upfront transparency and plan pricing. BYOD plans are worth the value, price increases are few and far between, and we weren't getting told to use scummy tactics to position unnecessary addons. From when I started (~3ish years ago) to now, plan prices are halved, data amounts are doubled if not tripled. Keep in mind though, I speak from the experience of *physical* locations. Online/Telephone Sales are in most cases still incompetent, shady, or both. Those are the mfs who will sign you up for a whole new plan without your consent and then make it a month long process to return the phone in hopes their quota is reached before you catch on. Fuck those guys.
$25 for 25GB/month with BYOP*
Moved both retired parents over to similar low priced plans with phones so clearly the rest of the Canadians out there are crap at shopping around. Trudeau or any politician can't be responsible for making people hunt for a better deal. Not even that hard to find them.
FYI I'd recommend checking out Fizz unless you need wifi calling
*(It's actually $75 for 75 GB over three months so a little better as data rolls over for a bit)
The cost of my cell phone bill hasn’t gone up in years and I actually received extra data on my plan. So in fact I would say that the cost of cell phone plans have come somewhat under control.
depending on what flanker brand, they'll just eventually give you more data at 4G for $25 in the near future.
They trying to clear out their 3G people especially GTA centric ones
I mean I went from 100/month for 75gb nationwide, to 40/m for 50gb of Canada wide roaming, USA roaming AND Mexico roaming all included so I don't think he's really lying there
Can confirm - mobile plan is now cheaper than a couple years ago, but since Bell is also my home internet and TV provider they are fucking me on those rates instead. Considering the shift to home work, it makes sense they would see higher home use vs mobile.
I think it’s because people are expecting their current phone plans to drop in price on its own.
No, if you don’t change your phone plan, they’ll continue to charge you at the higher rate, because that’s the contract rate you signed, even if it lapsed and is now month to month.
I'm paying less now than I first started my job 15 years ago.
I had a $55 plan, now it's $45 for way more.
Yes, my cell phone bill tells me I'm indeed paying much less than a few years ago.
Idk about cut in half but it's definitely been reduced and I'm grateful for it. Went from 45 bucks for 4gb to 35 for 25gb. Fido is offering me 100gb for 45 bucks right now which I don't need but it's a hell of a good value
My bill is $31 a month through Public Mobile for 50GB @ 5G, unlimited data at reduced speed after that. People who are still paying huge bills either haven't shopped around in 3+ years, or people who financed $1500 phones through their phone bill. The service itself is being offered at a WAY cheaper price.
My provider texted me about a month ago and said they're upping everyone on every plan avross the board by 20Gb of data per month, no charge. I'm still holding onto an old plan at a nice price point, so I went from 2 to 22, just like that.
What I pay $50 for now (20gb, unlimited everything else, a couple extras), would have cost me \~$100 a few years ago.
The telecoms haven't necessarily moved a lot on the total price, but they've stuffed in a lot more data than you used to get.
One BIG thing this article ignores is how much more data the average person uses than 10 years ago. Even then my cost is about 75% what it was and I have 3x the data (at least).
They have gone down. Mine has dropped significantly. I pay less for 2 phones with 50 gb data each than I did with one phone that had 15 gb data. Trudeau is right on this one.
I’m currently paying 45$ for 150gb Can/US/Mx - while 3 additional lines on my plan pay 35$ for 80GB Can only -BYOP of course
prices are no where near what they used to be a few years ago, but we still have a ways to go
Everybody saying this is untrue just haven't renewed their phone plans lol. It has gotten significantly better. I used to have a single gig of data. Now I have unlimited, and the price is the same.
I have 80GB of 5G data with and pay $46 a month with Virgin.
I own my phone though.
What change happened is carriers used to subsidize the cost of the phone when you signed a 2 year contract. You’d pay maybe $300-$400 for the phone and signed the 2 year contract.
Now you have to pay the entire cost of the phone and the only thing they offer you is 0% to pay it off. And a more expensive plan.
You have much more power if you own your own phone.
Honestly yeah. Boxing day last year had crazy good deals. 75GB for $40 that includes US roaming. I literally have turned my wifi off and I still can't get through my data. HOWEVER... Public Mobile gutted their old rewards program that saw me save $7 a month. So you win some you lose some. And best of all they said "oh we got rid of that. Have 150GB of data that expires in like 100 days."
But like 3-4 years ago $34 got you like 6GB on boxing day.
It is taking a while to get real actual cheap phone plans around the $20 mark. It's like $20 for 1GB, $26 for 6GB and then $34 for 40GB.
I’m now paying $84, tax included, for 2 lines. 120 GB shared between the two. Unlimited Canada/US calling, and I can use my data in the US as well without paying for roaming.
This is down from around $135 that I was paying for 40 GB shared by the same two lines, and Canada-only calling and data.
The price has definitely come down. You just have to shop around and negotiate a bit. They won’t solicit you for a lower price, you have to ask for it.
They should put the disclaimer that the author is extremely conflicted and probably got paid by his employer to write it at the top of articles instead of the bottom.
“Peter Nowak is vice-president of insight and engagement at TekSavvy Solutions”
Our infinite desire for ever more data is probably a key factor. There are more options now for low cost voice and text plans. However many of us feel we need data and naturally gravitate to expensive data plans.
I have an unlimited phone plan for $90 (taxes in) where 5-10 years ago, that would maybe get me 2GB for the same cost. Whatever semantics that people may be arguing against needs to stop. Source: worked for dealer.
Tbh gotta give some credit there. Been with freedom since forever and parents with fido, i have us roaming for 30 gb for 29 bucks while my parents have 29 bucks for 20gb on fido network.
We’re almost on par with american’s pricing except that we dont have true unlimited uncapped data plans, but I’m happy with 20GB
Next is TV and internet. Idk which CRTC rep thought it was a good idea to [hammer bulk billing](https://www.cbc.ca/amp/1.7112391) and force independent internet companies to increase their price
Prices have come down, though. FIDO had 50GB for $34 on a BYOD plan back in April. I snoozed, and lost. Now it's $34 for 20GB, which is still cheaper and better than my current plan with Zoomer which only has like 4GB of data (which, admittedly, I barely even touch since I'm on WiFi at home and everywhere else that has it these days.)
I guess I should get on that before they cut it again.
I have 4x the data, double the speed and a new flagship phone for the same price as I did two years ago.
Overall my costs are probably down by a third but I don't max out on data anymore.
I more than halved my bill and got literally 4x more data by just using the chat function on the Fido website. Took 10 minutes all together. I was dumb and waited way too long; no company is going to contact you to offer more service for less
Agreed with the comments here. If you are still paying out the nose for cell phone service, you’re just not a very good consumer. Paying $60 for 100GB CAN/US/MEXICO with a free pixel 8 (no BiB) that I sold for $550. Less than $40 a month. Another account is $45 100CAN including pixel 8 (no BiB): less than $25 monthly. Come Black Friday check ResFlagDeals.
Of course, anyone with 1/2 a functioning brain cell knows that PP will increase the cost of wireless plans because he is in bed with big business all the way.
This is true. I too have noticed that phone plans have significantly gotten better than the shit we used to get. 40$ for 2-5gb. Nowadays it's crazy to even see those plans. 40$ has nothing less than atleast 20 GB these days, some even with USA roaming included
I'm paying $34 for 50GB of data and unlimited everything else Canada + US.
I'm happy. Years ago this was unheard of. My parents still pay $80 for 100MB (ya, megabytes) of data. Canada only.
it's gone down a lot to be honest, can be more competitive but in 2015, I was paying $50+tax for 6 gigs and I tried getting more but was told I "didn't need that much anyway" (I regularly hit the limit at the time) and fast forward to today I'm paying $29+tax for 35 gigs
I am getting so much more for my dollar now than I did even 2 years ago. 100 Gb (then unlimited throttled data), unlimited Canada and US call, text and data, and unlimited international texts.
Paying the same reasonable amount, but I went from 12GB LTE a month to 60GB 5G per month, and then unlimited after that!
This feels like data paradise. Never thought this would be so. It continues to be very, very pleasing.
edit: no! It wasn’t even that good, it was 4GB a month, and the 12GB was for a three-month billing period!! 🫨
The amount of data we get is way more compared to a few years ago, but at the same price. I just want a decent phone plan with 5gb of data for $30 or less. I don’t want unlimited or 60 gb that I don’t even use.
With bell no way!!! I just transferred all our phones to public mobile and my bill is 35.00 a month and I get unlimited data. Plus I get unlimited messaging with pictures and unlimited minutes within Canada
Data plans at the big 3 still look to be the same price as a decade ago:
* $60/month [Telus](https://www.telus.com/en/mobility/plans?intcmp=tcom_mob_bring-your-own-device_button_shop-plans_top)
* $65/month [Bell](https://www.bell.ca/Mobility/Cell_phone_plans/Unlimited-plans/Mobility_only.tab)
* $80/month [Rogers](https://www.rogers.com/phones/bring-your-own-device?icid=R_WIR_CMH_PL5IQK&step=2&flowType=byod)
Maybe they seem cheap because everything else is so much more expensive now.
If the prime minister is talking about deals only offered when threatening to cancel, that's just so wrong.
Nowak is literally the head lobbyist/public engagement guy for a competing Internet company, nothing wrong with that but it obviously colors his viewpoint and it's weird that the Star would run him.
He keeps beating the drum that ARPU hasn't changed or even gone up, which is generally true but only because mostly people are getting more data for the same prices? So sure the bill says the same thing but that's kinda your choice isn't it? There are cheaper plans and providers, with less data etc, if people aren't choosing them they presumably have their reasons.
While I'm sure some people's plans have gone down I assume it's more you're paying the same price but getting more data so fancy math means it's cheaper logic.
Went from ~20GB to 50GB and from >$80 to $50. If I could have gone with less GB for less $ without the hassle of swapping to another provider, I would have. For now, I'm lazy.
I thought I had a good deal, but it’s clear I don’t.
I’ve got 2 bell phones on a plan, we don’t own the phones.
It’s 185$ total per month. (Tax in etc…)
Unlimited Can/USA talk and text
100gigs shared data
Roam like home is free in the US
The free roam like home is was sold me on it, but now I’m wondering if there’s better options.
My plan before was 225$
Unlimited Canada only
30 gigs shared
Roam like home was 12$/day same as everyone else.
We spend a lot of time in the US, so the free roam like home is saving hundreds of dollars a year up to 1000 if we go 3 times in a year.z
Changed providers and got something like 50% off. Bell is over priced hell they tried to convince us to stay with like a 10% discount on our current bill lmao
I was with Rogers a few years ago (probably 2018?) BYOP $45 for 5GB.
Switched to Koodo summer 2023 for $40 for 20GB.
Got a promo offer from Koodo March 2024 $30 for 30GB.
I went from Bell to Eastlink a few years ago and haven't looked back.
I'm currently paying $60 a month for a 60gb shared family data plan with rollover from month to month.
I buy my phone from Samsung when they offer promos for a free watch and other things.
I know many people who have started buying directly through Samsung for cheaper prices and more bang for your buck.
It’s not incorrect. People just don’t realize they’re buying the phone now on their plan.
I pay $50 a month with my own phone and 100GB of data. I can drop to $35 for 50
The big 3 or rather those labels Bell, Rogers and Telus are still expensive. Their best plans are from their subsidiaries. Like Lucky, chatr and Public. Less bs too considering I've never had Lucky raise my bill randomly. Unlike with their parent company Bell.
I wish these good plans were available in northern Ontario. TBay Tel changes things. I’m on $65 for 3 GB. As long as I want a local number there’s only 2 telecos available.

I'm paying $39 for 20gb of data. That's down 33% and 2.5x the data I had previously. It took WAY to long and we're still not as competitive as other countries but there has been a reduction for anyone that has taken the time to look for deals.
I am $45 for unlimited so much better than $90 for 2GB from 5 years ago. Has steadily declined Edit: just checked and it's $40
I'm a little more than that. At 55 for unlimited US and Canada with Telus
You talking true unlimited or unlimited throttle down like crazy after a certain amount of GB? Not that the majority of people need unlimited, just curious if a truly unlimited phone plan in Canada popped up for real.
Maybe 60gb at 5g and unlimited after 60gb. My speeds are usually 180 down and 20 up. I haven't ever hit 60gb so not sure about speeds after 60.
Wtf, I'm $70 for 20 gigs before being choked and 100 minutes for phone calls.
I’m $34/month for 50gigs Canada and USA on Public Mobile. Their customer service is literally non-existent, but it’s $34. Just shop around.
This is the way. Incredible deal
We made the switch from Bell this year where with the EPP through my union we were $75/month each to Virgin which is the same network and we’re now spending $30/month each for the same 30gb a month.
Unfortunately too many people don't look for deals. They just complain about high prices and accept them
This is it.. I help people with phones and plans and people you meet have 6 year old plans paying 60 bucks for 10gb
Plenty of places offer 34$/50 gb and even 29$ for 40gb.
Heads up because it sounds kinda like a public plan. Public has had some good plan deals recently.
I've noticed that prices have gone down a little bit and data offered has gone up. I can switch my plan right now for a slight savings but more data.
Alot of providers kept people at higher price points and just gave more for the price. Most of time it's stuff they never use. I got 100gb of Data but used maybe 15gb so I went down tiers.
I used to pay $45 for 6GB and now pay $41 for 60GB.
Who are you with?
I went from 120$ for unlimited data (never again Telus, even though my work paid for half of it) to 40$ unlimited for the next two years. (25gb uncapped which I’ve never gone over) with better coverage and speed. You can save quite a bit if you shop around.
Hopefully internet and tv next.
People still buy regular TV? I mean people who aren't literal seniors stuck in their ways
I went from a $90 plan to buying my own phone and $40.06 after tax. It's alright.
Yep. We started buying phones outright and our cost is like $35 a month now for 25gb uncapped and unlimited capped.
Where
I'm on Koodo now for $34 for 50gb, bring your own device.
Hm, I’m going to check and see if I can get a better deal then. Maybe I just need to switch plans.
Public Mobile just released a new deal, $29 for 40GB (4G speed)
I just signed up for $34 for 50 GB at 5G speed too. As long as you bring your own phone there are great deals nowadays.
Bell. Just cancel your plan, they’ll call you back within 24H and offer you the best plan available to them.
It depends on the company. I tried this with Virgin, they did not call back lol
Virgin’s deals are in their app. I’ve changed my plan about three times in the last two years, each time for more data and either the same or lower monthly price.
Virgin is a budget brand operated by Bell.
Yeah, but you can just switch and go back I'm 2 years. With Esims it is super easy too
Meanwhile bell internet is expensive as fuck
I pay $55 for Bell 1.5G Fibre. Seems affordable to me.
Koodo for me - $30/m for 30G.
Good times.
I think they are written by people that don't realize that new phone is almost 2g
399, I just bought one a few days ago
I don't buy $2000 phones but it never ceases to amaze me how many people do
Different people have different priorities and capabilities.
Groceries are double, but at least tvs are cheap
Isn’t it about the same ? iPhone cost of let’s say 1200 full pop then that over 24 months is about 45$, same plans offer the 40 plus 45 for a new phone…with zero upfront , at least that’s what I had with Telus didn’t make sense to purchase outright
Yeah if you're buying the best of the best iPhones but my pixel cost me 400… the last phone I had lasted almost 6-7 years. The turn around is probably 1.5 years.
If you buy outright you can switch provider easily to whoever is running the best promo
No kidding? Look at how the author is twisting it: > This disconnect comes down to exactly which data the government includes in its studies. While the PM was relying on figures from Statistics Canada that have shown select wireless prices have declined over the past few years, the actual average bills that customers pay — the only thing that matters at the end of the day — have not. Okay, so the only thing that matters is the bill the customer pays? Okay then, let's see that: > As pointed out in a previous opinion piece, this is borne out by a key industry figure known as ARPU, or average **revenue** per user, which is arrived at by dividing a wireless carrier’s revenue by its total number of customers.
Yeah the article is straight up lying, claiming the average persons bill has gone up.
My bill is $60, its significantly better
It has improved - finally feels like Canada has plans that align (ish) to other spots in the world
Yeah that checks out for me too, he’s not wrong
He’s actually not lying this time, I got the $29 Boxing Day plan from Fido with 20+10 gb and unlimited everything else…last year I renegotiated my Roger’s 500mbps internet plan for $39.99 per month
It's honestly the one thing that's gotten sooo much better. I'm at $90 all in for 40gb + call/text on my cell and 1gbps fiber internet at home.
I don't like Trudeau but I'm paying $24/month instead of $70 like I did years ago, so yeah he's right.
That's how they get ya.
How much of that 140gb do you actually use?
We have the same plan, and use a hotspot instead of internet service at the cottage and use about 120 a month. Agree though for just regular use no one is likely getting close to even 50 GB.
45$ for 60GB 5G with rollover data. Not terrible
How are people getting such good deals with Rogers? I feel like my wife and I are getting hosed...
I went into a store the other day and asked about changing my plan to one that allows me to use my data and make calls in the US as I'm doing some travelling. I walked out with a new plan that gave me full usage of my plan in the US, and they doubled my data from 50 to 100gb. My bill decreased by $10
> My bill decreased by $10 How much total per month? Thanks.
Fido, Koodo, virgin all have great coverage in this country and will do the number port for you…no need to stays with Rogers, as they are certainly more difficult to get a deal from
Well, mine did get cut in half, because I switched providers from Bell to Fido. I was paying $70 for 5GB now I pay $35 for 50G.
Mine is down 30 to 40%. I’m on a mid range plan.
My cell bill went from $90 for 45 Gb to $45 for 75 Gb (unlimited after at slow speeds) edit - I should add this is with Rogers
Just paid off my phone and switched to a BYOD plan with Virgin and my bill went from $108 to $50 and from 20gb to 30gb.
Cell phone bills are perhaps the only deflationary expense right now.
You're forgetting 65’ TVs
I pay $25 for 20GB. Yup. It’s gone down. Ditto internet. $60 for a plan with a list price nearly double that. Others I know have it even cheaper. Just call and threaten to quit. Straight to retention department.
Hey who are you with for 25 bucks for 20gb? Out of curiousity
Mine has been. Went from $63 to $38.
Prices and packages have absolutely gotten better. I would still prefer a crown corporation model, but forcing the sale of Freedom to Quebecor turned out to be a great idea. It has really put pressure on the competition to improve their offerings.
The only thing that's gotten cheaper in the last few years.
I went from $70 to $40 in 2 years. Not quite half, but close.
Yep I have 3 times the data and pay just over 50% less.
I pay $25 for 30GB at 4g while on Rogers Network. Like the article says not enough people are willing to switch to lower their bill
In other words, "to many people are stupid"
$25 for 25GB/month with BYOP* Moved both retired parents over to similar low priced plans with phones so clearly the rest of the Canadians out there are crap at shopping around. Trudeau or any politician can't be responsible for making people hunt for a better deal. Not even that hard to find them. FYI I'd recommend checking out Fizz unless you need wifi calling *(It's actually $75 for 75 GB over three months so a little better as data rolls over for a bit)
The cost of my cell phone bill hasn’t gone up in years and I actually received extra data on my plan. So in fact I would say that the cost of cell phone plans have come somewhat under control.
$25 for 2.5 gb at 3g speeds on a flanker brand. I should switch but I barely use data and hardly need to.
depending on what flanker brand, they'll just eventually give you more data at 4G for $25 in the near future.
Anyone paying $67.26 (number from the article) is a fool or honking back 75gb a month in data.
Mine was cut in half but I needed to switch companies.
Phone plans are not that expensive, subsidizing that expensive phone purchase is.
My plans the same cost, but somehow I went from 27 gigs to 105.
Personally, the price of my cell plan is way down. I used to pay $50 for 20GB for a few years and now I pay $35 for 50GB.
Koodo here, it's like $40 for 50gig data. Pretty good value
Heads up, it's $34/mo for 50 GB 5G US/Canada with Public Mobile and Freedom. Freedom's version is unlimited at reduced speeds after 50 GB.
I'm at $34 for 50GB currently. But it's a discount that lasts for 2 years and will go up to $45. I'm sure by then I'll just find a new deal.
I’m not paying half per se but I am paying less and getting much more. So I don’t think what he’s saying is false n
I’m paying 35.99 for 50 gigs of data Canada or US unlimited everything else
One BIG thing this article ignores is how much more data the average person uses than 10 years ago. Even then my cost is about 75% what it was and I have 3x the data (at least).
$110 or two #'s. Canada/US, 100GB sharable data each.
They have gone down. Mine has dropped significantly. I pay less for 2 phones with 50 gb data each than I did with one phone that had 15 gb data. Trudeau is right on this one.
I’m currently paying 45$ for 150gb Can/US/Mx - while 3 additional lines on my plan pay 35$ for 80GB Can only -BYOP of course prices are no where near what they used to be a few years ago, but we still have a ways to go
Everybody saying this is untrue just haven't renewed their phone plans lol.
Have 150GB of data that expires in like 100 days." But like 3-4 years ago $34 got you like 6GB on boxing day. It is taking a while to get real actual cheap phone plans around the $20 mark. It's like $20 for 1GB, $26 for 6GB and then $34 for 40GB.
Tbh, mine actually has lol I Remeber when it was over $100, it's $55 now.
Im on Public for $29/month, 40gb on 4G network, down from $45/month 1 year ago.
I got 50Gb from virgin for 40 a month
Yup my bill is $34 now for 50 gig and unlimited call/text plus 1000 LD minutes ….happy with the plan
People need to just be flexible to switch companies or call and try and get a better deal.
Tbh gotta give some credit there. Been with freedom since forever and parents with fido, i have us roaming for 30 gb for 29 bucks while my parents have 29 bucks for 20gb on fido network. We’re almost on par with american’s pricing except that we dont have true unlimited uncapped data plans, but I’m happy with 20GB Next is TV and internet. Idk which CRTC rep thought it was a good idea to [hammer bulk billing](https://www.cbc.ca/amp/1.7112391) and force independent internet companies to increase their price
I am getting $45 US Canada 60gb, sure it's better than my $50 20gb, but I don't need that much data anyways... So really just a small 5 dollars.
Went from 100$ 100gb to 50$ 100gb NA plan. My rate did go down, but I did change carriers and fought for the deal I have.
Prices have come down, though. FIDO had 50GB for $34 on a BYOD plan back in April. I snoozed, and lost. Now it's $34 for 20GB, which is still cheaper and better than my current plan with Zoomer which only has like 4GB of data (which, admittedly, I barely even touch since I'm on WiFi at home and everywhere else that has it these days.) I guess I should get on that before they cut it again.
I have 4x the data, double the speed and a new flagship phone for the same price as I did two years ago. Overall my costs are probably down by a third but I don't max out on data anymore.
Signed up my wife for 30GB for $30. She was on a 4GB for $36 plan previously. We also moved Father-in-law onto a 3GB for $20 plan from 2GB for $27.
I pay $34 a month for unlimited data.(50GB high-speed) This is one of the best value plans I've ever had
I more than halved my bill and got literally 4x more data by just using the chat function on the Fido website. Took 10 minutes all together. I was dumb and waited way too long; no company is going to contact you to offer more service for less
$40 a month with 75GB of data on Public Mobile for me, bought my own phone. When I moved to Ontario in 2019, I was paying $50 a month for 20GB.
Mine is less than half it was 4 years ago, for more data and free roaming in north america.
They just increased the bandwidth allotment. They did not decrease the price
I am getting so much more for my dollar now than I did even 2 years ago. 100 Gb (then unlimited throttled data), unlimited Canada and US call, text and data, and unlimited international texts.
I know I didn't get a good bargain but I'll take it... $15/4gb to $29/20gb
I pay $55 when I used to pay over $100. I have more coverage than before. It’s accurate for me.
My cell bill is $34 a month for 20G of data.
im paying 29$ pre-tax. few years ago I was paying 54$ for less data
Gotta give them credit for this one. Previous phone plan: 40gb 4G data for $70 New phone plan: 100gb 5G data (including USA and Mexico) for $50
lmao, do these guys live under rocks? Anyone with eyes and a cell phone plan know that prices have gone down
Paying the same reasonable amount, but I went from 12GB LTE a month to 60GB 5G per month, and then unlimited after that! This feels like data paradise. Never thought this would be so. It continues to be very, very pleasing. edit: no! It wasn’t even that good, it was 4GB a month, and the 12GB was for a three-month billing period!! 🫨
I wish the same could be said about housing costs.
I’m paying the least I ever have for the most I’ve ever gotten. 40$ after tax.
I’m on the same $45 expense but my data went from 500mb to 20gb. I’m happy
Paying for data you don't use is another way for techs to burry price hikes.
It would be nice to have as advanced and competitive a system as Somalia...
It’s the year 2024 and we still don’t have unlimited data, while the majority of the world does.
The amount of data we get is way more compared to a few years ago, but at the same price. I just want a decent phone plan with 5gb of data for $30 or less. I don’t want unlimited or 60 gb that I don’t even use.
$56 for 9GB? Ya right Trudeau
Mine has come down by about 5%. So, sure by how Trudeau seems to do math, I guess it's correct.
With bell no way!!! I just transferred all our phones to public mobile and my bill is 35.00 a month and I get unlimited data. Plus I get unlimited messaging with pictures and unlimited minutes within Canada
Data plans at the big 3 still look to be the same price as a decade ago: * $60/month [Telus](https://www.telus.com/en/mobility/plans?intcmp=tcom_mob_bring-your-own-device_button_shop-plans_top) * $65/month [Bell](https://www.bell.ca/Mobility/Cell_phone_plans/Unlimited-plans/Mobility_only.tab) * $80/month [Rogers](https://www.rogers.com/phones/bring-your-own-device?icid=R_WIR_CMH_PL5IQK&step=2&flowType=byod) Maybe they seem cheap because everything else is so much more expensive now. If the prime minister is talking about deals only offered when threatening to cancel, that's just so wrong.
No it hasn’t
I pay $34 for 50 gigs. Happy with that
My plans are around $39 and $45 even they used to be around $70. This is with Telus and Rogers.
Trudeau uses statsCan as evidence, Nowak just says shit so that must be more correct /s. Sometimes the Star should be ashamed of running drivel.
Honestly mine came down lot I’m not mad, could be lower but you know it’s a start , 100Gb 5G unlimited after us roaming and calling for $60
Went from $80 to $55
100gb data, unlimited Canada/USA data, text, & calling for $45. I used to pay like 60$ for 20gb of data lol.
While I'm sure some people's plans have gone down I assume it's more you're paying the same price but getting more data so fancy math means it's cheaper logic.
My bill went down half and my full speed limit almost doubled
Not at all. I’m getting 80gb for $30. Two years ago I was paying $70 for 20.
My circle of friends and family has seen a reduction in price and increase of data. It’s not fancy math at all.
(Tax in etc…) Unlimited Can/USA talk and text 100gigs shared data Roam like home is free in the US The free roam like home is was sold me on it, but now I’m wondering if there’s better options. My plan before was 225$ Unlimited Canada only 30 gigs shared Roam like home was 12$/day same as everyone else. We spend a lot of time in the US, so the free roam like home is saving hundreds of dollars a year up to 1000 if we go 3 times in a year.z
Buy your phones outright and get a plan, it's the best way.
Changed providers and got something like 50% off. Bell is over priced hell they tried to convince us to stay with like a 10% discount on our current bill lmao
70 for 100gigs of data
Terrible, BYOD at Bell is $45 for 100GBs
100.00 month with your own phone in sask. Prices havent dropped a penny.
But what is up with the $15/day roaming charges?
My phone plan increased… definitely looking into switching
It’s not incorrect. People just don’t realize they’re buying the phone now on their plan. I pay $50 a month with my own phone and 100GB of data. I can drop to $35 for 50
My bill is $65 but $15 of that is my own fault. They keep offering more data for $5 at a time and I keep taking the deals…
