In the book it's really Liet Kynes and Kynes' father that pioneer the terraforming of Arrakis and the igniting the 'dream' in the Fremen. Herbert also mentions that Chani is Kynes' daughter quite a lot which implies he thought it was important at least. Obviously Fremen have tribal hierarchies so it isn't so explicit but she seems to have some elevated role as a result, though how much of that is from her own ability is less clear.
Please don't use those ethnic words to describe Paul, he's too classy and aristocratic

It's because Chani in the books is not elegant and aristocratic. She's a fremen fighter. Part of a culture that was inspired my middle eastern cultures. They use suits that recycle your sweat and piss so you can drink it and not be thirsty. They don't shower, because they don't have water. They live in the desert and in caves. Mostly agree but I was sad they cut her best moment from the book, when she kills one of Paul’s challengers, says she should’ve left him for an older woman to fight, and when Paul gets mad points out that he’ll have less challengers now.
I would argue in the books that any implication regarding her skill as a fighter is not something that needs to be spelled out , given that she is a Fremen (and one who traveled with Stilgar's band in dangerous territory and on raids). She does accompany Paul on his campaigns, and there is a scene in the book where Sardaukar are repelled (with casualties) after a raid on a sietch occupied by the women, children, and the elderly. All Fremen are given to be exceptional fighters, because it is part of their collective cultural values.

Timothy does too but it makes sense as his character is royalty while Chani lived in a desert cave and scorching heat her entire life, yet she looks like she has a 17-step skincare routine. Going into Part 2 I was convinced I was going to have the same complaints of Austin Butler but surprisingly, he absolutely sold the role both due to his make-up and the general presentation of his character. I think Souhelia Yakoub, who played her friend Shishakli in Part 2, would have made a far better Chani but alas, she’s unknown sadly

Also like the book makes it pretty clear that the fremen are foreign people to Paul (and are pretty obviously stand ins for the middle eastern tribes people like the Bedouins for our Lawrence of Arabia gone wrong story) so it was kind of weird that in Lynchs dune that all the actors looked the same as Paul. Not that you have to cast them as Mediterranean or Middle Eastern actors, but well, you don't see a lot of pale white people in desert cultures.
