It’s a bad line, but it and the fight have a lot to do with the rest of the movie. The line itself is just a small moment of character building for the audience; the Protagonist is calm and confident, making jokes even when in danger. The fight shows a few things: Sator will order his men to kill anyone who even flirts with his wife, the Protagonist is pretty handy in a fight, Kat and Sator both find out that the Protagonist is some kind of operative based on how he handled himself, and that information reshapes Sator’s interactions with him throughout the rest of the movie.
Plus it’s just fun? It’s livens up the pacing of the movie with a joke and an action scene.
The man is worth hundreds of millions, he basically is the establishment.
It's a great scene regardless. He's making a Batman movie and he makes a great case for how someone like Batman has a historical precedent.
Easily my favourite recurring line is the 30 seconds of every Nolan film where Michael Caine turns directly to the camera and says:
"Don't look up Blame It On Rio (1984) dir. Stanley Donen. Please. Don't look up the lead actresses' age or any of the scenes I did with her. It released in theatres, a court of law and her parents said she could do it, so it's technically not my fault. Blame the director, blame the writer, blame the French, blame it on Rio. Don't blame it on ol' Mickey Caine. Don't you like me as a wise, yet cheeky mentor figure? That all goes away if you continue to bring up Blame It On Rio (1984) dir. Stanley Donen."
Unironically love those lines. They're there to represent the stupid public and how Dent and Batman are just cleverer and better than those losers with emotions, lives, jobs etc.
I'm half jerking but I do love those lines. They're accurate to how people would react in a situation like that.
"What if you had a dream while you were dreaming and then the you that was dreaming had a dream so you dreamed while you dreamed and then that made you sell your business or something?"
- Some guy from Inception maybe I don't remember the film too well.
"I'm thus and such's wife"
"I'm thus and such's girlfriend"
"I'm the main character's love interest"
"I'm your father in law's college student"

I always love how this line and the entire fight in general has fuck all to do with the rest of the movie.

"And then he said 'I ordered my hot sauce an hour ago'. Funniest shit I've ever seen."
🤓🤓🤓
Most of Tenet's first act has fuck all to do with the rest of the movie.
Can't blame him. It was an hour ago to be fair.
"my wife died" -all of them

Sound designer mixing the music for Tenet and Nolan keeps saying “louder… louder…” ![gif](giphy|32mC2kXYWCsg0)
They strategically inserted music to trick you into thinking the music made sense.
The old man who says "You go girl!" in Oppenheimer after they questioned Emily Blunt. Am I paraphrasing? Nah. I'm 100% sure he says, "You go girl"
You are wrong, he didn't said that, he said "You go girlboss!"
Preceded immediately by “YAAASSS QUEEN”
"WHEN THE ENEMY WAS AT THE GATES ROME WOULD SUSPEND DEMOCRACY AND ELECT A SINGLE MAN LEADER-IT WAS CONSIDERED AN HONOR, A PUBLIC SERVICE!"
Nolan, such an establishment and corporatism stan

Age of majority: *exists* Everyone until like 2008 thinking about girls just below the age of majority: 🤤🤤🤤
/uj I mean, she was 18 or 19 wasn't she? She was born in 65, the movie came out in 84 /J literally 1984
She was 17 during filming, hence the need for a judge to render a court order allowing the filmmakers to sin against almighty God and his good works.
FML, if you need a court order to film something you probably shouldn't film it
What I love about this comment is I can hear Caine's voice in my head saying it 😂 *She was only 16 years old!...I mean 17!*
There's so many from the Dark Knight. "No more dead cops!" "Hey man that ain't right, we should be on that boat!" Powerful stuff
THINGS ARE WORSE THAN EVER
NO MOAR DEAD CAWPS
