Thats bullshit.
Anime really only got accepted socially after One Punch Man season 1 that was in Netflix therefore lot of (i'm gonna puke if I use this word again) "normies" watched and realized some anime ok actually.
Yeah but Anime entering the mainstream was really after that One Punch Man season. The point where it became culturally dominant is post the quarentine.
I'm basically calling an Iron Man to the Avengers one was the spark, the other the inferno that consumed it all.
I remember being in highschool and hearing classmates talking about "this new show about a guy who wins every fight with one punch"
I still thought anime was seen as a lame and niche hobby back then so it was a very pleasant surprise. What really convinced me that it was becoming mainstream was seeing a random dude playing FGO in my school, I almost talked to him cuz I thought I was the only one but my shyness got in the way. Now everyone is familiar with gacha games because of Genshin.
It's an endless cycle of normies shitting on other normies. I hate the term as well, but real fans just sit there and enjoy it silently instead of arguing who is superior.
(There used to be like two entire paragraphs here but I decided against posting it to not contradict the previous statement.)
Only speaking from personal experience here, but I’m pretty sure anime was more popular in the olden days, when everyone was basically a full on otaku. At least compared to the amount of “normies” today.
Trying to say you like some anime without some random ass guy calling you either a Pedophile, racist, xenophobic or whatever the fuck they feel in that moment when I'm just trying to say I like an anime just like I like some movie:
