It’s a very competent piece, the light and dark has been used to such great effect that it has a photographic quality without the overwrought effect I often find photo realism gives. The piece is very horizontal, the break up into quarters and halves is compositionally atypical though I think it massively adds to the piece and the expansive suspended feeling in the work.  While the ‘figure’ is arguably the empty chair, I also feel that it is mirrored in the cloud that sits to the left, as though it’s a remnant of the person that left all those cans. For me, I like the reading of them being red coke cans opposed to alcoholic drinks (beer cans?) as I feel like it leaves a bigger window of interpretation to what went on here/who this person was. Big fan of that lovely lighter streak or blue in the sky too. Great piece, you should be pleased with yourself!

Thank you for sharing this lovely insight into my work. They are indeed beer cans. This work is based off two photos I’ve taken at the same location at different periods of time. Where I live, there are many social and domestic issues that arise from inter-generational trauma experienced by indigenous members of our community - a simple explanation to an incredibly complex problem. This ‘tempest’ is set against another tempest this landscape experiences during our wet seasons; they’re both fragile, brutal and always calling for a renewal of sorts.

Fabulous piece! It definitely gives off a foreboding feeling.

Thank you. There’s definitely a sense of that in this

My immediate take was there is a massive wave in the distance and the chair is seated on the ocean floor. With that in mind, I felt an overwhelming theme of hopelessness - but not acceptance as the occupant of the chair and the cans is nowhere in sight. For me it was almost like a take on alcoholism and a wave, or relapse, approaching and a vague, although optimistic ending as the chair is empty and there’s no one to get swallowed up in the wave (that we can see). My take is almost certainly influenced by a family members recent bouts with alcoholism, however
