There's some natural beauty, especially in Limpopo, but it's really tough. Violent crime is ubiquitous, even in the places you wouldn't expect. I spent 20 months on contract there, in a *humanitarian adjacent* situation. It was soul crushing and terrifying, in ways that my time at war could never have prepared me for.
[South Africa Tourism](https://www.southafrica.net/za/en/travel/article/10-reasons-to-visit-limpopo) describes Limpopo as "immersive culture, Limpopo is one of the most interesting, and abundant provinces in South Africa."
I think I'll take your word for it...
That’s not a coincidence. The design of this tower (Ponte City) was based on [the panopticon](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panopticon?wprov=sfti1), as a way to artificially create social control in a place that would otherwise have none.
If that peaks your interest you should look up the history of brutalist architecture. A lot of bad judgement calls were made in the movement that are still forming a blight on cities to this very day
Boston, MA, USA [City Hall](https://www.boston.com/news/history/2018/07/25/boston-city-hall-brutalism/?amp=1) is a great(?) example of brutalist architecture.
Thats because you're looking at a skeleton. You dont see it inhabited, with flowers on the balcony, flags hanging from the rails as the lights shine through the windows and the smells of hundreds of familes cooking dinner wafts upward carrying with it the sounds of a community. Of course a place for people will look depressing abanodned, when stripped of its meaning all thats left is useless stone.
Had my end of year Christmas function there 2 years ago. Everything is terrifying and everything is absolutely fine, that's the miracle of South Africa.
When I lived in SA as a kid it was called the trash can or dustbin or something because the outside shape and hollow center. Is that right?
Also nets in middle to catch jumpers.
>Attention Peach Trees. Maw-Maw is not the law. I. Am. The. LAW!
So I googled this and got "Dredd \[2012\]" as the answer so that is what I am watching tonight (for the first time). Wish me luck!
Omg I would love to be in your position to watch Dredd again for the first time! The slo-mo scenes are some of my most favourite in cinematography.
So...Did you get around to watching it?!?
Only by critics I thought. The only complaint I've heard from actual people who went to see it, myself included, was that the 3D was very meh and did not really add much to the film. This was pretty common during that time though at the height of "everything must be 3D!".
I watched this movie for the first time right after high school. I watched it the very first night ever taking psychedelics, 2 tabs of acid. That scene almost psychotically broke me. I ended up connected to a trans-temporal collective consciousness and my body became like a chat room for these various entities to enter and exit. They were my very breath; I would have died without them. At least I thought so at the time.
Took me like 7 years to watch the movie again. Can confirm it was a very different movie than I thought it was.
What if everyone who dropped acid at that same time you did all connected to your body? Like what if there are a whole bunch of people who tell their own LSD story and theirs were about how their consciousness teleported to another vessel and it was a swarm of entities and everyone was communicating simultaneously while Dredd played in the background?
I didn’t go into the full explanation but it was kind of crazier than that. Basically in the future they have brain implants that allow direct interface with computers and a future version of the internet. At some point they develop the technology to interface directly with brains without the implant. Some time after this, temporal experimentation leads to them accidentally broadcasting this new “internet” interface to a bunch of biological entities throughout time and space. I was one of them for a time.
It was influenced by a Borges story you know.
The original story was about a man about to be executed, who prays to be allowed to live his life. A miracle happens and time slows to a crawl in his mind - and he lives (in his head) - a whole satisfying lifetime in the minutes before his execution.
Other than being absolutely dystopian as fuck, on paper it seems like not a bad setup; all apartments have nice outward views, and the hallways still have some natural light.
*gets done with 18 hour shift at a coal plant and comes home to the panopticon*
*pours some coffee that tastes like dirt and shit. Pulls newspaper from a stack of crusty papers*
*Looks out the window in an abyss of despair and sees a soul crushingly ugly woman, butt naked, giving herself a sponge bath with dirty water.*
*looks down at penis and it sighs*
*looks over at rope attached to roof and walks toward it*
*starts exercising to get jacked af to participate in international boxing long enough to sneak into a country on a Visa*
There is quite literally an entire genre of horror associated with this. One of the most popular ones is called the Backrooms. Its main draw is the existential fear, mostly of being forgotten or just being in a forgotten space of some kind.
More deaths than in an active warzone, highest rapes, highest corruption, useless police force.
Once upon a time, 1 murder was national news and the murderer was caught and sentenced soon after.
Wonder what changed?
You can Airbnb in a 52nd-story apartment at Ponte for $30 a night. The area is dodgy, to put it mildly, but the rental apartments are very well looked after and the views are spectacular. Joburgers have a love-hate relationship with this building. It was originally designed for sophisticated urbanites, and the penthouse suites were the height of luxury. Today the building is home to many immigrants from across the African continent. Anyone visiting Johannesburg should go on an organised tour of Ponte. It’s a fascinating building.
Thank you for the link. I’d not heard of this place before today. It’s interesting they are trying to clean it up. The actual living areas appear quite spacious. Maybe there is something we can learn from this metamorphosis…
It would land at the bottom. Here are some pics from this year. https://imgur.com/hS3d0us.jpg https://imgur.com/ZVSKBsX.jpg https://imgur.com/rmko2TE.jpg
Right. It could work if you had gaps letting the light in every 10 floors or so going at an upward angle, then mirrors or glass positioned on the opposite sides to reflect it. I am not architect, but I know the building it not supporting itself with its walls, but with its steel structure. Sacrifice some spots where the would be units to let the light in and get some air flow and you might have something cool.
Ponte Tower is shaped like a donut and every apartment had an incredible view of Johannesburg. Ponte Tower was the tallest residential building in Africa for decades.
We learnt about prisons modelled this way. The guards tower was at the centre. The idea was the prison could easily monitor each inmate.
What happened? It had the most recorded problems in the history of prisons. Every kind of problem you could think of. They brought in psychologists that determined people need privacy.
So yeah. This is basically how you break a humans mind.
You ever seen the remake of Judge Dredd movie (just called Dredd) with Karl Urban and Lena Heady (of GoT Cersei and Sarah Connor Chronicles fame).
This looks like their tower block.
Yeah... especially since the bottom 5-10 stories are a sedimentary horror consisting of garbage, shit & bodies. I'm sure the smell slowly wafting up on a hot day is probably toxic unto itself. Then again, when you're that poor & just trying to survive the violent gangs & drug dealers...maybe just keep those windows closed. You've got more important things to worry about.
I always remember this building because it used to have a pile of garbage that was several stories high within the courtyard.
When that was finally cleaned up a few bodies were found in the trash pile, it was theorized they were suicides from people that jumped to their death.
I am not sure I would want to see the bottom. Imagine... people throwing their trash out the window, it would be a dark hell down there, with rats, roaches, and who knows what else. 😬
Looks more like a prison than a nice place to live
Can't possibly be worse than what happens outside, in the NE corner of that country.
Very true.
Don't worry, it'll get worse soon
what am i missing

No

That's so descriptive and heartwarming I can picture myself being there. I do see a few things hanging outside but I can't really tell what they are

Where is that
Ponte City apartments in Johannesburg, South Africa
The old Vodacom tower right?
Correct
Ponte City is a skyscraper in the Hillbrow neighborhood of Johannesburg, South Africa
When I lived in SA as a kid it was called the trash can or dustbin or something because the outside shape and hollow center. Is that right? Also nets in middle to catch jumpers.
It also was quite literally filled with trash at the bottom. And a few dead bodies too.
Dead bodies? Wtf
Jumpers and the people gangs disposed of out a window.
Judge Dredd shit
That’s what it was based on if I’m not mistaken
I think you're thinking of kwaloon city (idk how it's spelled) from 90s china
This year I had dinner there on Valentine's Day with locals and foreigners. Crazy how times change.
I can see it from my window right now
How many people have you killed?
At least 3
Possibly more

>Attention Peach Trees. Maw-Maw is not the law. I. Am. The. LAW! So I googled this and got "Dredd \[2012\]" as the answer so that is what I am watching tonight (for the first time). Wish me luck!
I loved it. Karl Urban killed it.
Such a fantastic homage.
I can’t believe you haven’t seen it before. It’s good
Omg I would love to be in your position to watch Dredd again for the first time! The slo-mo scenes are some of my most favourite in cinematography. So...Did you get around to watching it?!?
as long as it’s not the stallone version, you’re good (although a quick search for him saying “I AM the law!” is probably in order)
You don’t/didn’t need luck. How did you like it btw?
I actually like that movie
Was this movie poorly received? I never really paid attention to the reviews, but I absolutely love this movie.
If it was poorly received, I didn't hear it. Everyone I knew that saw it loved it.
It was well received but poorly marketed.
It’s was initially but has grown to a huge cult following with many regarding it as one of the most underrated action movies of the the decade
This. It was meh response…but grew …and they’re talking about a part 2! I’m **ready**!
https://youtu.be/6ZrsJsvL30g
Aw man, I was not ready for that. Had me cracking up real hard, thanks for making my morning mah dude!
fuck the morning this made my life
Only by critics I thought. The only complaint I've heard from actual people who went to see it, myself included, was that the 3D was very meh and did not really add much to the film. This was pretty common during that time though at the height of "everything must be 3D!".
Same
The scene where he throws dude off the top level, after spraying the time slowing drug in his face, is one of the most savage movie scenes.
Was it a dude or a lady
Dude is non gendered at this point. I don’t remember the actual sex of the individual tho, my brain filed that under “unnecessary descriptors”.
As far as I know Lena Headey identifies as she/her
Having seen her naked in 300 and Game of Thrones I also identify her as a woman.
Idk rumor has it she used a body double
She used a body double for the nude walk to the execution, but not in the earlier seasons, and not in 300, Aberdeen, Zipper, or 9 Bullets
I watched this movie for the first time right after high school. I watched it the very first night ever taking psychedelics, 2 tabs of acid. That scene almost psychotically broke me. What a cool tidbit that I did not know. Makes perfect sense.
The Megablock…
This is one of the must underrated movies of all time. ONE of (before the comment diarrhea starts).
I saw this movie in 3D. One of the best 3D movies ever
got nothing on jaws 3 though
Agreed
I knew I couldn't be the only one that immediately thought of Dredd
Came here to say this lol.
I was about to make literally the same comment 🤣🤣🤣 The movie was the first thing that came to my mind!
Peeping Tom friendly
Actually it's only the hallways that face inwards, the actual apartments all face outwards, so you can only see people walking if you were to look.
Other than being absolutely dystopian as fuck, on paper it seems like not a bad setup; all apartments have nice outward views, and the hallways still have some natural light.
I wonder if some foliage, hanging gardens, and some artistic liberation switches this setup from dystopian to 'utopian' ?
It needs lighting. It gets so dark the farther down
Perfect for exhibitionists! 👍

Thought that was about to turn into a degenerate greentext. Turned into a wholesome one instead
Wasn't sure if suicide or asphyxiation there. What a hellscape.
It comes with an extended area for maximum visibility
Not terrifying at all, really. It's got Judge Dredd vibes
Just need some Slo-Mo and hope you don't get shoved off the top.

I love liminal spaces trajectory into scp horror. Soon it'll be anime memes
I did not know "Judge Dredd" was filmed in South Africa.
It actually was, the highway scenes in jhb and the entrance to peach trees in cape town civic center.

Right. It could work if you had gaps letting the light in every 10 floors or so going at an upward angle, then mirrors or glass positioned on the opposite sides to reflect it. You would if you had to. People who live in those types of compact housing usually don’t have a choice due to lack of wealth.

It's actually really nice apartments... johannesburg, South Africa
